My contribution to our virtual Thanksgiving dinner is my cheesy potato casserole. It's a must have for the family at Thanksgiving or Christmas. Plus you can have it for breakfast!

Octogirl: isn't that a given? (eating pie for breakfast the next day)

    Mommyof2: oo, savories!

I still haven't quite decided what I'm to bring. NOT succotash, thankyouverymuch. Roasted Brussel(s) Sprouts with bacon, maybe, but I know not everyone likes those. Maybe I'll just set the table and drool. Wine-resistant tablecloth, of course.

Lucy55: dunno, but if we're going to imagine this, we gotta imagine it right. So I'm saying a resounding NO, all the flavor and fun but none of the calories. Eat all the whipped cream you like.

My sons have been know to almost end up in a fist fight over my sage dressing because one of them took too much and didn't eat it and the other son wanted to beatthe crap out of him for wasting it. It has turned into one of our holiday jokes, we all wait to see how much stuffing this particular son takes lol.

So sage dressing is my contribution, drizzled with homemade turkey gravy.

Haven't been writing much - did a number on my wrist with that fall 3 weeks ago. In a splint and having therapy.

Daughter, Son in law and 2 grandsons coming weds. and staying until Monday. Thinking they will be doing the cooking as lifting things one-handed is a pain... But we roast a big turkey roll and cook ham with sweet potatoes/ and mashed potatoes (I can eat SP but allergic to regular white potatoes). Not sure what veggies - we usually do a roasted veggie tray of some sort. Then leftovers all weekend. Grandsons are going to be disappointed when they hear grandma can't play video games one handed. I do have a craft thought - letting them make ornaments and garland for my little Christmas tree - we decorate on Thanksgiving weekend. They will be back for Christmas this year too - usually we go their way. It will be nice not to have to travel this year.

Hoping it goes well with all. For all that needs me in their pocket. I'm there for you. Am reading just not one-handed typing that much.

I can't resist a jolly food discussion. You guys have covered most of the bases. Do you know what we need, though? Little savory nibbles while the turkey is in the oven. I sometimes bring crudite and skordalia, which is this magical greek dip involving walnuts, olive oil, salt, and as much garlic as fits in the food processor. And cheese pennies with cayenne pepper.

Oh, and a couple of bottles of wine, maybe?

Sitting on the porch, inhaling the aromas that are starting to drift out of the kitchen....

The virtual Thanksgiving dinner's definitely coming together. Thank you all, for indulging my own tossed-up defenses against The Crazy.

Rainny's savory appetizers and skordalia dip out on the porch of the CrazyTown Inn, along with a selection of wines, while the turkeys (plural--there's a lot of us) roast ever so aromatically in one set of ovens. Pies and sides baking in others; hey, this is the virtual reality of CrazyTown, so we have as many ovens, cutting boards and eager choppers as we want.

Mommyof2's cheesy potato casserole. ChiSandy's minted-pineapple baby carrots. At least three variants on green beans. Sweet potatoes--savory, sweet, and praline. Mashed white potatoes to sop up gravy. My brussels sprouts with an artery-slamming amount of bacon. ItalyChick's sage stuffing and Molly50's cornbread dressing. Pies: pumpkin, of course, but I'd toss in pecan and apple. Whipped cream all around. What have I missed? Feel free to chime in with your favorite sides.

Back out on the porch, hot drinks with ativan sprinkles and warming aperitifs. Bedrooms for all upstairs, complete with down duvets and soundproof walls, so stay up as late as you like, drink as much as you feel necessary but no more.

And of course, International Pie-for-breakfast day the next day, with Hangover Helper turkey-rice soup and turkey sandwiches on crusty/crunchy rolls.

So, while multiple ovens are indeed nice (I am lucky to have two ovens in my kitchen)...I recommend that we do one turkey on the weber grill. In fact, I volunteer for weber duty. I do one that way every year and it always is a favorite! could not be easier, great smoky flavor.

I have way too many persimmons gifted to me (they grow on trees around here :-) so I can bring a persimmon salad...with a lemon vinaigrette: the lemon tree is producing again.

So, got a text from my Dear Granddaughter tonight: she wants to make a cranberry pie with me while she is here. OK, I've never had cranberry pie, and wondered if it was even a 'thing', but I did find a recipe on the internet. However, DGD says she has her own ideas and will 'tweak' the recipe a bit. Did I mention that DGD is only eight? I have to admit that chatting about cooking with her on the internet is heaven, and yes, of course cranberry pie just got added to the menu at my house. So of course I will bring the results of our experiment to share with you all. and maybe given the productivity of my lemon tree, a lemon meringue pie is in order as well?

Molly, I am glad Wyatt is doing better. Gma, cooking with one hand sound like a real pain; good plan to let your family do the heavy lifting, literally and figuratively.

    Hugs to all

    Octogirl

Oh yumm! If only this could be real and with Beppy sitting at the head of the table.

ChiSandy Tell me about your minted pineapple carrots, please.

Molly, hoping things improve for you asap. I think of Wyatt often; his name has a special meaning for me. Hugs

QueenMom, I especially like the the Hangover Helper for Friday. And the breakfast menu.

Octogirl: Definitely something tart. And I'll so take you up on the offer of a turkey on the Weber grill. The advantage of a truly large (however fictitious) gathering is the opportunity for multiple turkeys in addition to the sides and desserts and appetizers.

Jan: I've always thought that leftovers were the real reason for having such a large spread on Thanksgiving. Hangover Helper breakfast, brunch, lunch, tea the next day. Though I'd add the crucial caveat for all this that Beppy IS at this gathering. How could she not be?

Oh, Molly! I'm glad Wyatt is doing better now. He has such a great, shining spirit. ((Hugs)) to all of your family.

Years ago, my boys caught me eating pumpkin pie for breakfast. I explained to them that I was eating my vegetables!

I love our Crazy Town Thanksgiving dinner! Of course you don't have to be American to celebrate being thankful.

Gma, Take care of yourself. It sounds like you have some fun crafts planned.

Jan, the rolls sound so yummy.

Sandy, I've made apricot glazed carrots and am curious about your pineapple mint carrots.

Tomorrow is my youngest son's birthday.... 14 years old. They grow up so fast.

Ugh , having some attitude problems with my almost 24 year old DD . She's mom to my DGS . It's so hard to get someone her age to understand that she doesn't know everything . Her boyfriend just makes things worse .

(((Ducky))) You are bringing one of my most favorite soups! Thank you!!

I love the warmth that emanates from this thread. It all starts with Beppy....so of course she is at the head of the table. Her love for all shining from her eyes.

Thank you all for helping me to focus on the important things! Friends, family, sharing, caring and love.

My follow up ct scan showed my 5mm lung nodule had not changed, but there are now a few more nodules. They are each 3mm and calcified granulomas,so I am still in watch and wait mode. Everything is too small for further testing, so another ct scan is scheduled in 3 months. I wish that were the worst of what is happening around me...

Neighbor issues suck...especially when you have not done anything. We have served 2 injunctions against harassment, and a had to call for a reminder visit by the police the morning after they were served. Iam hopeful that it settles down. That is all I can say other than the fact that I truly feel like a bad luck charm...

Molly - I am thankful for you and your strength. Your plate is overflowing and yet you forge ahead. I try to have that fortitude but fall very short. Your perseverance and grace shows me that I can get up, brush off my knees and continue on. Thank you. I am happy Wyatt is feeling better, I truly don't think I have ever seen more expressive eyes than his. His love and happiness are evident in the photos you have shared.

I love you all and miss you when you fall in the plentiful rabbit holes here. Luckily they have a soft landing and an exit to use when ready.

Octo, I wonder about a cranberry/apple blend, mostly for texture's sake. The cranberries are going to cook down like crazy, and apples might give the filling a bit more body without affecting the flavor too much.

    Just thinking....

Poppy, happy birthday to your boy!

Oh Lucy that is so delightful. I'll meet you at the Crazy Town porch with open arms, ready to take it off your hands.

In my real world: My wonderful neighbor is making TWO banana cream pies for the 50th anniversary Friday. Not exactly traditional Thanksgiving fare, but her pies are famous and I've heard she's sold them for $50.00 each. My DD1 is an award winning baker, so they'll be plenty of sugar running around the homestead. There will be 15 of us here starting Wednesday afternoon thru Saturday. And I can hardly wait.

I love throwing in a handful of fresh cranberries in my apple pies at Christmas. That's my "festive" touch, ha!

Poppy, sending birthday wishes to your son. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving (even without your mother). Your story reminded me of when I reminded my mother of my college graduation date, she moaned and said there was a special event at her church that she was planning on attending! (you can see I carry my hurt a long time) Oh how I hope I've never insulted my children like that.

Today's chore is the big sweep through the supermarket. I'm guessing 2 cart-fulls and then probably have to go back for more Tuesday or Wednesday.

Wishing all a happy and safe Thanksgiving. I hope the blizzards don't ruin your gatherings. Jan

Sorry about the delay--I've been wrestling with my computer networking class and mopping up all the drool. thinking about this virtual Thanksgiving dinner. And yes, Beppy will be at the head of our table, and all those we know and love there with us. Otherwise what's the point?

So far it's, in no particular order

Amuse-bouche appetizers, all through the afternoon:

    • Crudites and skordalia (never enough garlic!),
    • cheese-cayenne pennies (rainnyc)
    • Crisp crackers, goat cheese, lox/caviar (me)
    • And of course, dry white wine, a sparkling or two, and the amazing fizzy juices from Lemon Creek, near me, for them as don't partake of alcohol

    The dinner itself

    Soup:

    • Roast butternut squash soup (octogirl)
    • Escarole/Italian Wedding soup (duckyb)

The Main Dish (what else?): Turkey. Or rather, turkeys (or is that turkies? I"ve never been sure.)

Sides (this is half the fun, no?)

    • Cornbread stuffing (Molly50)
    • Sage dressing + gravy (Italychick)
    • World's Best Dinner Rolls (sorry: gottta look this one up, I'll be back)
    • Yams with praline crunch (poppyk)
    • Minted pineapple carrots (ChiSandy)
    • Green bean casserole (eggroll)
    • Cheesy potato casserole (mommyof2)
    • Mushrooms stuffed with savory sausage, cooked in butter (Di2012--hey, it's a virtual dinner, no cholesterol, no calories)
    • Brussels sprouts+bacon (me)
    • Creamed onions (my husband--he's so into this, it's not even funny)
    • Mashed potatoes (whoever wants to volunteer to mash the suckers)
    • Gravy, gravy and more gravy (me)
    • Choice of wines: I'm inclined to think a couple of reds--the dishes are strong enough to stand up to that--and as many whites, dry or mildly sweet.

    Dessert:

    • Apple Crumb pie (proudtospin)
    • Pumpkin pie (Molly50)
    • Sour cream pound cake (duckyb)
    • Apple pie with a handful of cranberries
    • Lucy55: pavlova
    • Sweet(er) wines: Riesling, Sauterne, Icewine

For afters, taken on the porch:

    • Hot drinks with ativan sprinkles, taken on the porch. May include your choice of brandy, rum, or tequila.
    • Chocolates
    • Mini-doughnuts

And of course, the next day:

    • Pie for breakfast, the breakfast of Champions!
    • Turkey soup cookoff: matzoh balls, rice, noodle, whatever floats your boat
    • Turkey sandwiches with your choice of French or Italian bread, gravies, stuffings, and of course, the all-crucial cranberry sauce!

If I missed anyone, I apologize! I haven't Our Beloved Mayor's skills with a spreadsheet. But all are welcome. This is CrazyTown, after all, so the table is infinitely expandable, the conversation always audible yet not overwhelming no matter where you're sitting, and the tablecloth never stained by splots and drops and tipped-over wine glasses.
