Trvler I have to hold my breathe 3 times during treatment on the left side. I hold for 30 seconds each zap. I was told during simulation they have you hold your breathe for the CT scan and if it significantly moves your heart out of the way your a good candidate. For some people holding your breathe doesn't move your heart enough out of the way so they don't bother making them hold their breathe

The cetyl alcohol in the product is from Palm oil and it's a thickening agent.

I had to hold my breath...kept my heart from getting microwaved. Lungs regenerate better than the heart, and we don't use all of our lung capacity anyway, so I was told...

I have had success with Aquaphor. The nurse suggested that I warm it up, and it does make a difference with the icky sticky! I put the plastic jar under the tap and run hot water over it while I get ready for bed. When it is warm, I keep the water running in a smaller stream on warm, lube up and give my hands a couple of squirts of soft soap and wash up in real warm water.

This is tolerable because my RO said I only needed to use the stuff once a day, at bedtime. She says that studies have shown very little difference in outcomes using any variety of heavy moisterizer. My mother had success with miaderm but spent considerably more than I did.

I have 2 boosts left and I am just slightly pink!

Well wishes to those of you suffering from itching and bad "burns". We're nearing the end of this

Enigmatic Fox, thanks for the words of advice. I don't really know what I was looking for...magic I guess. Sorry you are dealing with the trifecta. Side effects of being an over achiever.

Allison - I have to hold my breath. Its all dependent on if your heart is close to your rib cage. Luck me, mine was. I haven't started so I am hoping i t wont be a big deal.

Littleblueflowers did you find it getting harder at all after the first week? I found Friday my fifth day like I couldn't hold as good as the beginning of the week

I just finished my 3rd week and its going well so far, my RO says the SEs and tiredness hit you on the 4th week. I have one little itchy spot under my breast but the hydrocortisone worked. My RO suggested cutting a little piece of knit t-shirt and putting it between my bra and my under-boob area. I have 15 down and another 18 to go.

I am working full time and running my kiddo around to all her sports every night. I did skip Zumba this a.m. because I wanted to sleep in, but I think that's because I had to pick my daughter and her friends up from the middle school dance! No running for me - it hurts a little to bounce so I am going to hold off on that for a while.

Molly - not sure if this might relate to your joint pain, but my RO had explained that many symptoms we have is not directly related to rads but to all the inflammation in our breasts. That's actually where the fatigue comes from. Our bodies overworking because of the inflammation. Maybe you're experiencing some pain as your body is fighting what it is going thru. My RO said to use ibuprofen to reduce the inflammation. Mention it to your techs. Although the standard answer usually seemed to be it's not rads. Sometimes they had some good advice though.

Christine - I did have more trouble holding my breath the further I got. I made it all six weeks though. If it gets really tough though, mention it. They can always break the beam into further segments.

Trvler - the breath holding technique is determined during your simulation. They look to see how to best treat around your heart. My RO actually always does three simulations for all left siders. She does on your stomach, on your back both breathing and in breath hold. For me she picked breath hold because it was best in my situation.

No worries, Espanola, I wouldn't mind a little hot flash magic myself! :)

I'm so happy -- they're letting me go home from the hospital tonight! So looking forward to hugging my family and sleeping in my own bed and taking a nice long (but not too hot) shower!!!

    Thinking happy home thoughts,

Hi all, I went shopping today and found Aquaphor for Baby was two dollars cheaper than regular at $15{++ and three dollars cheaper at Amazon, I ordered it to give it a chance, and I have dry burning arms and legs anyways. Radiation not until December. Also ordered Lidocaine Plus from Amazon at 4%. After I ordered it I decided to check it out. Topical lidocaine is metabolized by the liver, and it can be toxic if too much used causing convulsions and coma. Just an FYI for anyone interested.

Marijen: where did you find that information about lidocaine? (Many drugs have a frighteningly long list of possible side effects--ever seen the list of SEs for aspirin?)

    It's at EHow

    Cautions

    • Used in careful doses, the anesthetic effects of lidocaine and benzocaine are useful for a variety of applications; however, toxicity can occur, especially for lidocaine, because its effects penetrate deeper into the body. If too much is used, neuron signaling can be detrimentally affected, causing the central nervous system to become depressed resulting in convulsive seizures. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning in January 2009 against the use of local anesthetics such as lidocaine in cosmetic purposes. Two women who used a topical anesthetic in conjunction with laser hair removal experienced seizures that led to coma and death.

I don't hold my breath for left side rads, but I'm in prone (face down) position.

Sweaty neck was just about the only menopause symptom I had when I was first going through the change; I didn't mind the perspiration so much as it getting my hair wet and then drying frizzy and with waves in the wrong places (why women now pay good money for haircuts and products to achieve "bed-head" I'll never understand). I finally solved it by gathering my hair up in a high ponytail and clipping it atop my head with a plastic barrette-clip for sleeping. Makes styling so much easier between shampoos. So that aspect of going on letrozole won't bother me.

I was prescribed Lidoderm lidocaine patches for bursitis resulting from gluteal muscles I tore shoveling snow and then walking 1/2 mi. through a 2-foot blizzard last Feb. I was warned to cut them up and put them over the smallest possible area, to never leave them on >12 hr. and then not use them for at least another 12 hrs. Guess that's why.

That sounds right. I tried a little anbusal on my knees today - benzocaine. It did help.

So has anyone gotten a warning from their RO about limiting use of the lidocaine gel? Does the topical preparation vary from the patches?

(Here's what Mayo has to say about the topical applications, for anyone who might be worried. They're not the only reputable source out there, but a decent one.)

    Marijen,

Regarding the lidocaine. I used to work in a cosmetic laser clinic where we often prepped for procedures using topical lidocaine. We often did procedures on face, neck and chest but as a rule only did two at once because of the lido limitations. Ex: face and neck. We also slathered it on quite thick. This might give you an idea as to what you can safely use. The odd person would feel unwell, but we just wiped it off and it would settle

Has anyone done rads while wrapping an arm for lymphedema? How on earth does it work?

I read the Mayo link. Queemomcat, once I put bio freeze on my neck for it's menthol affects and in no time I could barely breath and my throat closed up. It was really scary. Will never try that again. Also for KellyAnne there can be a build up of toxins if you use the lidocaine day after day as opposed to one time. And since the liver metabolizes it, it would not be good for people with liver problems. JMO.
