Fall 2015 Rads

Hang in there a couple more days rain. I still have one area that hurts and is still moist and I still have to dress, which is the boost area, but I can tell it's on the mend now. It doesn't hurt as much as the other areas because it is where the surgical scar is. Yesterday I even wore a wireless bra for the first time. Started hurting at night, but I was happy how long I could keep it on (playtex play wirefree).
Anyway, going to be in the upper 90s for New Years, and in the 80s in the lead up and after. Never been a fan of heat, and now it's strange that it's so hot for Christmas and New Years. I'll never get my head around the flipped seasons! LOL Ah well!
Good luck with everything!

AusUSA - has anyone kept you alert as to the weather in Milwaukee this year? We broke the record high for Christmas day and I think, the day before as well. Just gray today....still no snow!!!! Warnings for some 'weather' on Monday into Tuesday, but not much. Can't believe it. I had prayed so hard for clear roads during all my December treatments......and now that I'm done, it can do 'whatever'. ~ As to the healing, my heart brakes for those who need dressings, drugs, etc. after completion. I consider myself so fortunate. Just yesterday, I noticed black 'speckles' coming off the treated area.....so I guess the corner has been turned. Still some tender spots, and the occasional zinger (maybe 6 times a day) but have yet to try to wear a 'before' bra. A bit afraid. Am still lathering on the cream, and wearing a cami under my nightgown to protect myself. And the naps are getting less frequent (might be the season). ~ Good luck to one and all.

Hi Nana! Was just on the phone with my mom after trying to reach her and my dad over the Christmas holidays. They told us how warm it was, but I had also seen the "weather reports" from my Facebook friends. Crazy winter for you guys. Compared to last winter, it's a dream I hear. Where is your treatment? So glad the weather stayed good for your treatment. I'm from St. Francis, so probably would have gone to the hospital in Cudahy, but as you can see, I'm in Melbourne now with my Swiss husband and 2 little Aussie born kids. LOL Don't ask!
Most people I guess don't get as bad as Rainnyc, me and some others (I forget your names! forgive me!), but it really is quick to mend. The nurses at my treating hospital told me that I have "young" skin, so it's healing quickly. LOL I guess 43 is young for BC.

AusUSA - Glad you connected with your family. Forecast for today is that the 'blast' should be upon us just in time for the home commute this evening! Coming from the south, so will take a bit longer to get to me in Mequon. My treatment was in Grafton - only 15 minutes away. I can't say enough good things about the Center. They did everything possible to make that patient put any sense of 'illness' out of their mind! If I hadn't known better, I'd think I was going for a daily trip to the spa. They thought of everything....! Thankfully, I am done and can do without my 'spa' treatment but for a follow-up appointment. And......yes, you do have 'young' skin.....add about 26 years onto yours and mine is doing much better than some. Hang in there.....I can see that corner turning up ahead.

Hi ladies, I am 3 weeks from my last tx today. My skin is slightly tan and only a little bit of peeling left to go. Otherwise I am doing great! Still have pain that throbs occasionally especially where my ALND incision is but overall I am feeling good.

Rain: I hate you are going through that. I thought the itching was bad. I hope you turn the corner soon.
Mine is healing well. I don't see any swelling or shrinking of my foob? Not sure if that is delayed or what. Still have some minor itching but the zingers seem to have stopped, too. I see my RO tomorrow so we will see what she says.

Trvler, I am relieved for you that you don't see any shrinkage. I definitely had shrinkage around my TE. Well I am happy to report that I think the nausea/food aversion was indeed....wait for it...RADS! I am 3 weeks post rads and I am not getting sick now. Smells are not as bad but still some slight aversion to some smells. I truly thought it was the anastrozole.

Molly50: wonderful! though, sardonic bleep that I am, I wouldn't be surprised if the RO says something along the lines of "Oh you're just gettng used to the anastrozole."

QMC, I found it funny that "I" was the one that said "not rads". My RO would probably have accepted responsibility. She never once said that to me. Since I don't get to follow up with her, I guess we will never know, lol.

I want your RO, and I even kinda liked mine. He's the one who took the tack "We'll wait to see how you react to treatment before we start fussing with NOT swimming at the Y, or ladling on creams and lotions."
Ultimately, it doesn't matter why, only that the nausea's dissipating. (Mine cleared up pretty well after rads too.

And starting next week I am cleared to swim! I am actually glad they said no swimming for me. Only because my skin got so dry despite everything I threw at it. I am nearly done peeling. I really like my RO and would recommend her any day. She was so willing to change up the plan to keep me from getting worse. Great staff, too.

Return to swimming? Even better! (not a good swimmer, so much as an avid one, over here)
(sheepishly) The more I hear about rads, the more I think I must have cast-iron skin or something. I never got past the "incredibly annoyed" stage of skin irritation. Swam through the whole thing.

Molly- so glad you are cleared to swim..something to look forward to!
QMC- great about the nausea going away...such a yucky way to feel. No real nausea for me but appetite is less than even last week. Not sure if it's because of the rads or if I just overdid it after getting taste back after chemo and Lump. Am on the downhill slide of rads...16 down/14 to go. Last 7 will be boosts. Hate wishing time away but cannot wait til rads is over!
Rain- how are you feeling?

HH, hooray for more than 1/2 way done!

Thanks, Molly. My RO and staff are great. They have been so accommodating! Would rec them anytime.

HappyHammer: possibly a combination of all those factors? Now I just have antibiotics and tamoxifen "extreme disinterest in food".

One week post rads and my skin is FINALLY healing! Skin is still peeling but it's definitely healing. Itching is almost non existent and no more pain. I worked part time during rads so the last two weeks of rads I wore a zip up hoodie and a cotton tank top beneath it. Today I wore real clothes to work! Still feeling fatigue but not at the level of chemo fatigue.
February my office is sending me to Orlando for training and I've extended my stay through the weekend. I'll be traveling alone and I am perfectly ok with it. I need the time away. My hair is growing in so I'm leaving the wigs behind
Hang in there everyone! We're almost done!
Rain: thinking about you!

OneBadBoob: (more than slightly tongue in cheek) so, how does wearing real clothes compare to that first shower in terms of feeling better?
0 -
one bad boob - I went to a museum out of town today and didn't wear my wig. Okay, I had a little slouch cap most of rhe day on my cold head, but it feels good again to just have hair.

Your trip sounds like "just what the doc ordered" especially with no hats or wigs. My sweet huby took me to Savannah weekend before Christmas...no wig/no hat....just my little bit of hair...it was soooo good. Haven't looked back since!! People look at me 1/8 in hair and smile at me and I smile back!!! We are not our hair but, hey...when it starts coming back it IS a good thing!!
0 -
In other words...will not wear a hat or wig ever again unless it is due to the fact that it is cold and I WANT to....Ev.ER!!

I wish I could go wigless. My hair is so curly that even though it is about 2 inches long, it looks awful. I have no idea how long it will take for it to look decent.
0 -
Trvler....wonder if your hairdresser could help you with some sort of product or something that would help tame the curls? I was actually hoping that this new hair would be "wash and wear hair"- a bit curly and funky- we will see...your curls seem to be overachievers- maybe get some prof advice? Going hatless/wigless is a game changer for me!

Allison, my hairdresser last time told me that the curls would relax at 12 months post chemo...and she was right. I have a 1/2" flat iron that I use. This week I was running late to work one day, so when I got out of the shower, I threw a hat on my head while it was soaking wet and went straight to work. Lo and behold, I found out that my hair dried straighter and looked better! So yes, my new hair routine is get out of the shower, towel dry and put a hat on!

I posted this in the Crazytown thread but seems more apropos here!
Amish hats in the radiation waiting room. I saw an late middle age Amish lady last week with her husband; she must have been back again today for simulation or imaging for planning. I can't imagine going through BC without access to information - which I'm assuming is limited in her case. I've been wondering about how women in local Amish communities get mammograms, check ups, etc.

Interesting. Possibly depends on how conservative the group is? (more liberal groups in Indiana and Michigan)
0 -
I just assumed it was because it was short. It don't think it is much curlier than it would have been anyway. We'll see.
0 -
Pensygal, Don't let those Amish people fool you. I have several Amish friends and many of them have access to information just not the same way you and I do.
0 -
QMC - they looked pretty hardcore when I saw them - also a bit older. Would not make eye contact with anyone, turned away from the tv - but who knows?? There are several Mennonite communities here as well - definitely more liberal. Brutersmom - so true!! I routinely see them on cell phones, getting sodas at the Sheetz, etc.

The TV does not surprise me. Eye contact comes after a trust is built unless they want you to buy there products.
