Z-you are an inspiration. You give me hope with your determination!

Kathryn-you are so giving to be able to help other survivors with their exercise journey. Hiking is awesome, because you are outside with all its beauty

Time to go walk the dog!

Celebrate - I do miss having a dog as it was a sure-fire way to make sure I got out for at least one walk every day. We lost both our golden retrievers a few years ago, and although I don't miss all the dog hair, I do miss those walks and curling up on the couch with them.

I led a 1 hour yoga practice at my local Gilda's Club cancer center yesterday and today did a nice two mile jog/walk and about 15 minutes with some resistance bands. I'm new to resistance bands. Anybody else use them? If so, what are your favorite exercises to do with them?

Yesterday it was 81 and sunny! (It snowed five days ago) A long time friend and I were going to to lunch and beforehand we went out to investigate a local camp groundbthat might work for a survivor retreat. Wow! Miles of trails, lots of cabins, a pool, lakefront beach, horses, and fire pits and docks ...just beautiful and available to rent for $50 per person per night during spring and fall. Plus they invited us to hike anytime when camps aren’t in session. We hiked about two miles just looking around.

Maybe we need a BCO retreat so we can all get together! oh yeah- it will work for the Live by Living survivor retreat too.

Let me know if you’d be interested in telling Cancer to take a hike. I’m glad to coordinate :).

MRI this morning interfered with my normal hike time. Need to get out this afternoon.

    Keep moving ladies,

lwrite-I'd be interested in a BCO retreat-preferably Stage 4ers. Is the place you are looking at in Illinois?

The retreat location is just north of Bloomington in Illinois. It's about 2.5 hours from Chicago

Nice going Illimae! I admire your ability to run. It is amazing!

Z- were you able to get outside for a bit? Hope the MRI discovered you have been well all along and just need a Z pack to be cured :). In lieu of that I hope things are healing for you!!!

DG- we will need a yoga instructor :)

    Go, illimae!

It's a long way for me but still a retreat is a great idea!

Hope the MRI results are better than you expect, Z, and the fasting is going smoothly.

    Zumba today.

Heidi - I haven't had the nuts to look at the MRI which I presume is worse than I expect. For that reason, I appreciate the positive thoughts very much. It is very moving how you all get where my head is.

Fasting going well. Keeping up with regular moderate exercise. We'll positioned for Abraxane to kill tumors. IV tomorrow morning.

Yoga has fallen by the wayside this past week, but I think if I dial back my expectations I can get back into it. I need more of a restorative practice when fasting. My instincts tend towards a bodyweight routine but the thought of that is overwhelming at the moment.

Z, sending my thoughts for abraxane killing those cancer cells.

I finished brain rads and done steroids. We had an ice storm so got my steps in with Leslie Sansone . Will go out if less icy tomorrow.

Z- Hoping the MRI results help guide successful treatment!! And that they are boring as h$&! Thinking of you while you wait.

Mara - Congrats on getting through the rads and steroids! It’s a big deal and sending wishes that the treatment was wildly successful!

Starting back on my muscle building diet program today. Weights and yoga this afternoon. I’ve been baking and eating treats and the scale and pant size shows it. The daffodils look very cold this morning out in the snow...

I hit the gym this morning, first time in many years. I had a list of machines (written by the trainer during my free initial assessment) to use to build strength back, chemo and meds did a number on my muscles. Then, I tried the elliptical (recommended by my PT), only made it 5 minutes. I didn't know what buttons to push, so I went with random. Anyway, it was tough, I'll have to work on that for sure. No time to swim today.

This trial found that exercise reduces neuropathy for cancer patients on chemo. That much I get. The results are reported in P values, which I don't really understand. If we have any one who can explain, I'm interested.

Reading, cheering everyone on. Keep moving. It's clearly a good idea. Science says so.

    >Z<

Effects of exercise during chemotherapy on chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy: a multicenter, randomized controlled trial.

    PURPOSE:

Over half of all cancer patients receiving taxane-, platinum-, or vinca alkaloid-based chemotherapy experience chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN), which includes numbness, tingling, pain, cold sensitivity, and motor impairment in the hands and feet. CIPN is a dose-limiting toxicity, potentially increasing mortality. There are no FDA-approved drugs to treat CIPN, and behavioral interventions such as exercise are promising yet understudied. This secondary analysis of our nationwide phase III randomized controlled trial of exercise for fatigue examines (1) effects of exercise on CIPN symptoms, (2) factors that predict CIPN symptoms, and (3) factors that moderate effects of exercise on CIPN symptoms.

    METHODS:

Cancer patients (N = 355, 56 ± 11 years, 93% female, 79% breast cancer) receiving taxane-, platinum-, or vinca alkaloid-based chemotherapy were randomized to chemotherapy or chemotherapy plus Exercise for Cancer Patients (EXCAP©®). EXCAP is a standardized, individualized, moderate-intensity, home-based, six-week progressive walking and resistance exercise program. Patients reported CIPN symptoms of numbness and tingling and hot/coldness in hands/feet (0-10 scales) pre- and post-intervention. We explored baseline neuropathy, sex, age, body mass index, cancer stage, and cancer type as possible factors associated with CIPN symptoms and exercise effectiveness.

    RESULTS:

Exercise reduced CIPN symptoms of hot/coldness in hands/feet (-0.46 units, p = 0.045) and numbness and tingling (- 0.42 units, p = 0.061) compared to the control. Exercise reduced CIPN symptoms more for patients who were older (p = 0.086), male (p = 0.028), or had breast cancer (p = 0.076).

    CONCLUSIONS:

Exercise appears to reduce CIPN symptoms in patients receiving taxane-, platinum-, or vinca alkaloid-based chemotherapy. Clinicians should consider prescribing exercise for these patients.

    TRIAL REGISTRATION:

    Clinical Trials.gov , # NCT00924651, http://www.clinicaltrials.gov .

The p value tells you how probable it is that the results were due to luck.  0.05 means that there is a 5% probability that the results were due to random chance. 0.001 means that the chances are only 1 in a thousand. The lower the better. Exercise-induced improvement was probably less due to chance for males in this study than for other patients.

Hmm. It is interesting to understand how confident they are in their results but I want to know how much improvement they saw.

I also want to know why one would copywriting a name for an exercise routine for cancer patients?

Ladies do whatever exercise you like to do because that is the exercise you will do. I need to looking into branding that with a semi-medical name and getting legal protection for the brand so I can ... I have no idea.

Exercise fail yesterday...put on my activewear, drove past the gym and went to the fabric store for new quilting material. 😬

Hope everyone has a good day! Illimae- hope the procedure goes well!!

lwrite, quilting material is important though.

Weather is improving here so will step up the walking. Most days, I fall between 7000 to 9000 steps. Will try to gently edge that up by approx 2000 more steps most days of the week. I use hand weights for my strength training BUT may walk up to the gym and try out the rowing machine again. I liked it previously. May also "read" on the exercise bike for something fun to do.

I do however HAVE to stop buying wigs. I am starting to turn into a hoarder of wigs. I am obsessed with them and enjoy them much too much. Must slow down LOL

The brain radiation went well. This being the 2nd time, I wasn’t really freaked out but it was a touch more painful this time. I barely made 4,000 steps yesterday because try wheeled me everywhere. For the next week or so I am encouraged to walk but no gym workouts.

Glad to hear that you've got #2 behind you, Illimae.  Keep walking.  If you can get a bit of sun, that should feel good.

Weather here in WI was wonderful today.  Still some snow hanging around, but the temps almost hit 60.  Just a few more inches left for melting.  Got out for a nice long walk with DH.  I've hit 12k steps, and there's still some daylight left.  I can't wait for spring to hurry up and get here.

Nice work illimae!! I am a big fan of exercise for all things, but the day you get radiation to the brain may be the one day it is better to chill.

I did not get radiation to the brain today and my step count is less than yours. I was diagnosed with strep this morning and dealing with that took my exercise time. On antibiotics, should be a non-issue from here out.

Any walking is still a win Gracie. It will pick up for you. Our drugs can certainly take some time to adjust to which definitely impacts our ability to exercise more. We have to be patient with ourselves. We usually go back to more of a normal given time.

I did better since we finally have some lovely weather. Nice to walk in a t-shirt. My wig actually got sweaty during my second walk. Felt good outside with a lot of other people also enjoying the weather. Walked 5 miles today in total.

Hope everyone else is doing well.

My deep water aerobics class is back in session. It’s so wonderful. The resistance work seems great for my left side when I had the mx (and still have pain and weakness) and great to move my hip which was radiated and feels stiff and weak. Plus it’s a great core workout and makes me happy
