I wonder if Chief Justice Roberts is giving on these cases in order to help Trump energize his base. It's a big selling point for Trump to claim it is only if he is re-elected that there will be enough right thinking Justices to overturn Roe.

    I am a suspicious soul.

Ananda.. I wonder as well and my mind took off to --- Suspicious Minds by Elvis Presley? I know all the words are not pertinent, but I've got a little (OK a lot) loony with all the S*^&T we are dealing with.

    Stay suspicious!

Do these garments look like they are designed by straight men in a church that demonizes LGBTQ persons? Pope Francis endorses same sex civil unions, but as they say in the US "not in my backyard". No same sex marriages in Catholic churches. Progressive?

I'm with you guys on the hypocrisy of the church, but I'm hoping it is indicative of a sea change in one of the world's largest religions. Baby steps.

To be fair, the Episcopal Church has the same ornate clergy costuming and they are far more progressive than than Catholic Church about things like LGBT rights. Also on my brother-in-law’s first day as a Bishop, he participated in aBLM march, in his collar. (I’m an atheist myself and not an apologist for Christianity, I just know there is a wide spectrum of progressiveness-conservatism among Christians.)

A friend of mine calls the Episcopalianism "Catholic Lite".

Wander...agree re: a wide spectrum of beliefs among religious people. The ones with the greatest clout are the super conservatives wanting to impose there beliefs on the masses. As one of the meme's indicated they want to make this country their church.

miriandra - or “All of the pageantry, none of the guilt.”

Magiclight -Ironically, Catholics are not the big threat. It’s those fundamentalists we need to be worried about.

Wander...many decades ago I had little info on Catholic fundamentalism, yet today their voice is stronger than ever. Amy Coney Barrett, a People of Praise member, is a prime example of one who has risen to the highest court in the US. She is a frightening figure and I fear will be more so the longer she works to undermine many hard fought freedoms for women, for marginalized people, for non-Christians. .

my sister is a hard core Apologetic Catholic. They are absolutely a threat to the free world and more people actually staying in the church seem to be moving into the more fanatical category. I feel like that's true of all religions.

My DH calls himself a "recovering Catholic". He is appalled at the stuff he used to believe in so deeply.

We're in Colorado, and many of our friends are former Mormons. The term they frequently use is "escape", which says a lot about how controlling they are. The horror stories they tell about how women are expected to behave is blood-chilling. And those are just the Salt Lake City Mormons, not even the isolationist LDS sects!

Jwoo...just looked up apologetic Catholics and I almost gagged on how they see themselves as saintly in defending against an 'aggressor' who questions their beliefs. As I've said before, they are free to believe what they want, but they want to force, aggressively, through legislation, their beliefs on me. They pivot from defender to aggressor.

Wow, I had to look it up too. I had assumed that apologetic meant, "I'm so sorry for being such an ass to people before I found my own path." Nope, I was way wrong. It's more like, "I'm so sorry you're going to hell for trying to sway my beliefs an iota away from the medieval mindset that has been passed down to me."

Miriranda - had no idea there were so many "ex" mormons, or as the church prefers to say "lapsed" mormons in Colorado. Arizona yes, and Nevada - but Colorado? Wow.

I have a few friends who do the NaNoWriMo challenge. I once proposed a writing prompt for them.

First, imagine an anti-abortion, anti-birth control, anti-social welfare, tough-on-crime, pro-death penalty society. With no reproductive services, birth rates will rise especially among low-income populations. Once the baby is born, if no social welfare programs are in place, a lower-income mother or family is on their own for very limited resources. Driven by financial desperation, many families in this situation will turn to crime to cover their most basic needs, and self-destructive lifestyles to dull the pain. They get caught, sent to jail, and possibly executed.

Now assume the classic judeo-christian idea of Heaven and Hell vying for souls like currency. Which side is more likely to benefit from a system that brings lots of excess souls into the world; thrusts these new souls into an environment where they have few protections from sins of vice, and will be highly vulnerable to sins of temptation; then, when the soul is deeply steeped in sin, separates the soul from society and culls it before it can repent and find redemption? Which side, Heaven or Hell, is more likely to back politicians and other leaders who support these policies?

Now look at our current socio-political structure. Having fun yet?

The light turned yellow, just in front of him. He did the right thing and stopped at the crosswalk, even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection.

The tailgating woman behind him was furious and honked her horn, screaming in frustration, as she missed her chance to get through the intersection. As she was still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer.

The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up. He took her to the police station where she was searched, fingerprinted, photographed and placed in a holding cell. After a couple of hours, a policeman approached the cell and opened the door. She was escorted back to the booking desk where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects.

He said, "I'm very sorry for this mistake. You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn, giving the guy in front of you the finger and cursing at him. I noticed the 'What Would Jesus Do' bumper sticker, the 'Choose Life' licence plate holder, the 'Follow Me to Sunday-School' bumper sticker, and the chrome-plated Christian fish emblem on the trunk, so naturally......

I assumed you had stolen the car."
