Welcome, Wordgirl! I hope you continue to improve in your healing day to day until this is all ancient history!

Ok, a bit off-topic but had to share this....I just found this little miniature bookshop you put together yourself on the PBS Store site....I want one! So happy that you have a bookshop and wish there were many, many more out there. I just watched "The Booksellers"--a documentary you might like if you haven't seen it already. I found it on Amazon Prime but it may be available at PBS or elsewhere....really good!

Welcome Wordgirl. Glad you found us. You don’t have to be witty or congenial (you’re the word girl so you know what that means, haha!) Love hearing your Philly perspective so if ever or whenever you’re feeling up to it, chime in with your thoughts and opinions. Hope your healing goes well.

Oh my Jackie, your memes are terrific. Ioved the woman who has to work 3 jobs, and Obama’s punchline that Trump pays no taxes! Interesting about the Mar a Lago newspaper!

And “the difference is that in fantasy they are asked to kill, and in reality, they are asked to be kind”. Wow. That says it all.

I watched the Borat movie last night. I know SBC is deemed a jerk by many, uncouth, etc. and some of you might deplore the fact that I watched it. Yes, his stuff is extreme. But the Rudy part is kinda incredible. How SBC gets these things going is anybody's guess. That Rudy didn't know what was happening--well, such ignorance boggles the mind.....

What I found amazing and interesting was to actually see a live right-wing gathering in all its grossness. And to hear the thoughts and feelings of some of the gathered. I've seen vid clips and stills, of course, but never a prolonged scene with a real audience. These are the Trump folks--and even worse. THAT was compelling viewing. It also ruined my appetite and I went to bed on a half cup of sauerkraut and two dry cornbread muffins.....

I love that miniature bookshop, Trill. How high does it stand? Judging from how she yanked her hand away from Donald's after the debate and her obvious dislike for the First Lady gig, I wouldn't be be surprised if Melania voted for Biden.

Ruth, here's the info on that little bookshop...there are other miniature scenes you can build, including a little greenhouse that is adorable.....how can I NOT get one for myself to open Xmas morning and pretend my parents sent it from heaven? I don't know....They cost $40 but hey---some things are worth it! You can find them all at the PBS Store....

"Have you ever wanted your very own bookstore? You can build your own dollhouse-size, old-fashioned bookstore, full of wonderful things. Books, bookshelves, shelf labels, prints and paintings, cabinets, a ladder, a high-backed reading chair, a stepladder (for reaching high shelves), a tiny table, a vase of flowers—even working lights. Kit comes with everything you need: wood, cloth, paper, metal, environmental glue and paint, and complete instructions with detailed color illustrations. 1/24 scale, it takes about 20 hrs. to assemble. Finished size about 7"w x 9"h x 7½"d. Ages 14 and up (small parts). Takes two 3V batteries (not included). A perfect gift for the reader."

Thanks, I will check it out! You don't have to pretend it's from your parents, if they would have wanted it for you, then it IS from them!! My mother (who was a true book lover) or my dad (a super-gardener) might get me one of those kits for Christmas too.....or else Santa Claus might bring me a suprise!

    Welcome aboard, WordGirl!

Trump's super-spreader rallies are not just to stoke his ego nor make up for the lack of campaign-ad funds: the virus-spreading is deliberate, it IS the whole point! He is following the advice of incompetent and unqualified neuroradiologist Scott Atlas (would you trust an epidemiologist to read your brain MRI or an orthopedist to do your root canal?) to facilitate the idiotic concept of "herd immunity." Not only would that require the deaths of millions, it may not even exist: antibodies last 45 days, not everyone's immune systems have enough T cells to take up the slack after that, and therefore reinfection is possible--especially as the coronavirus mutates into different strains. "Herd immunity" to COVID achieved by anything other than mass vaccination is no more possible than exposing everyone to a single rhinovirus and expect that would wipe out the common cold.

This isn't analogous to the 1918 flu pandemic. Influenza viruses are different from coronaviruses (including how they replicate and what systems they ultimately target). And they don't call this one "novel" for nothing--humanity has never before encountered such a virus and we don't know for sure if anything can eradicate it. Flu runs its course--but we still don't know how long COVID's "course" is nor if it ever ends in any given patient.

McConnell is a polio survivor--and that has permanently affected his immune system (as a friend with post-polio syndrome tells me; and might explain the stroke Joni Mitchell suffered a few years ago, though her spokespeople chalked it up to a brain aneurysm). Polio survivors are especially vulnerable decades later to autoimmune disorders such as scleroderma, which might explain his lack of facial expression compared to photos of him early in his career; and--as my husband Bob tells me--Raynaud's Phenomenon, which causes pain, stiffness and discoloration in the extremities and can be a precursor to other autoimmune diseases. Someone with an autoimmune disorder--whether or not on immunosuppressants--is especially vulnerable to the fatal phenomenon known as "cytokine storm" should they catch COVID. That's why he's avoided the White House for months, and now especially Trump, period.

The discoloration characteristic of some COVID cases is usually observed as redness & corn-like swelling just below the cuticles of fingernails & toenails, and is bilateral. McConnell's fingers--except for his bandaged thumb--are normal in color. The deep purple bruising on the backs of his hands, as well as above his lip, points to the likelihood of a fall--causing an injury orthopedists call "FOOSH," for "fall on outstretched hand." (Happened to me in 2018, resulting in hairline fractures but no bruising). He might have tried to break his fall with his hands (instinctive) but also landed on his face. At his age and perhaps being on blood thinners (even baby aspirin) he is more vulnerable to bruising.

Now, as to why Steven Mnuchin looks like Clutch Cargo when he speaks, I'm stumped.

We mailed in our WI absentee ballots from overseas for THIS election, even though the "five easy steps" took way more time than anticipated to source a printer, envelopes, etc. In 2016 it didn't seem necessary (and I wasn't a huge fan of HC anyway) but I'll be damned if we let this election go past without voting.

I work in a role where I need to be informed on political moves and government direction, so all my work friends are REALLY into politics. Normally they help me understand the ins and outs of the UK Parliamentary system, but the last year or so I've been schooling folks on the Southern Strategy, Dixiecrats, Lincoln, memorable campaign gaffs from the past, etc. So far I've won the office pools on likely Democrat nominee and final Dem ticket! :P I've already taken off the 4th of November because I imagine we will be up all night watching MSNBC returns. And drinking.

ChiSandy - interesting about Mitch M. Partner showed me a photo and damn he looks busted! Like i didn't think that face of his could get any more pushed in.

Sandy, LOL re Mnuchin! And thanks for the explanation of the rest.....

Ruth: I hope Santa is around. Print pix of the little bookshop and make multiple copies and leave them in every room and on every surface....you, know---subtly. I was sorta surprised the bookshop scene doesn't include a resident cat.

    Excellent memes! Love them!!

And I love the little bookstore. I will have to look for it.

Now. 4 Pence aides have tested positive, yet the VP is going to continue his appearance, cuz he tested negative and he is an essential worker per CDC guidelines. WTF??

"The statement did not come from the White House medical unit, but instead from a press aide. Two people briefed on the matter said that the White House chief of staff, Mark Meadows, had sought to keep news of the outbreak from becoming public."
