"Forgiven" debt is indeed taxable income in the year in which it's forgiven. I know this because I've encountered landlords 1099-ing former tenants who were sued for unpaid rent and then settled. The 1099 reported the difference between the amount due and the agreed amount paid. Nasty, but neither a violation of settlement agreements nor illegal.
And finally--a reason to wear my pearls, if only for a day. (Already have the glasses).

A big R loss in a red red Senate seat would be huge, even if the state doesn't go to Biden. SC has some lovely towns (but really terrible roads), although we noted that it seemed like everything was named after Strom Thurmond.
How is that lady in the Texas congressional race doing, the breast cancer survivor and Iranian immigrant? Ladjevardian I think - longshot but an interesting bid.
Lot of interest over here as a Biden win significantly complicates Brexit/hamstrings Tory choices and moves the needle away from some of the more nuclear options.

Not the first time I've heard this......

"Oh, gee, he's getting my husband back to work! I must round up my June Cleaver dress and heels and get ready to celebrate!"

Even if Trump wins we'll have a bluer-shade-of-red Senate---of that I'm pretty sure--and that's no small thing! (In fact sometimes it's THE thing!

Ruth: thanks for the ACLU poster on knowing your rights on Election Day. I printed that out in case anyone has an issue. I have a few printouts like that so that the phone numbers are quickly available, and people can take pictures of the printout with their phone.
And I loved the ice cream one!! So true!!

I am feeling hopeful today. It helps that it is not raining outside. It is gray, but so far dry. Ruth, loved your entries as I did everyone's this morning. The news is being 'iffy' this morning which has been my gripe all along. One day they cheer, the next day it turns into a Bronx one. They keep their ratings, but can make it hard for all of us.
I think things could be close -- but more along the lines of the cheating and suppressions. At that though, I do think the vast numbers of people voting early and willingly waiting in long lines is an amazing thing and I full well believe that they would not do that unless they really NEED to ditch Trump and Mitch. I have hope that is tempered a bit, but it is HOPE.
All reports this a.m. seem to say that Trump is not getting very far with his super-spreader feel good rallies. Wasting his time and the money. He left people ( a lot of Seniors ) stranded at the Nebraska rally last night. These people were bussed in, standing out in the cold, and they had to round up busses to go and get them resulting in some people having to go to hospitals from the effects of the hypothermia. What kind of person does that ? Well, Trump did it. Walked away from those people never looking back which is PURE Trump. I hope for anyone who hasn't voted from the state and THAT county keep that heavily in mind in less than a week when at their polling station. Go Biden.

Not sure how many of those stranded supporters in Nebraska's rally will put the blame on Trump. They seem to consider their suffering worth the price to pay to get him elected. Somehow it will be Hunter Biden or Obama's fault they were left in the cold.
I gag at Trump telling women he'll put their husbands back to work. Gag. Statistics show women are much more adversely affected by the pandemic than men. How many women who support Trump will allow their lives and their livelihood to continually be minimized, overlooked, deemed “not as important". I'm not sure, but reports say women are moving away from Trump in droves.
I have pearl earrings I will wear November 3.

Here is an opinion written by a friend of mine and I just wanted to share it here. I will preface it by saying dh and I have a retirement account that's done quite well this year. Very big gains. And I would literally gladly return all the gains accumulated since the first of the year if it meant getting Joe Biden elected as president and getting rid of Trump. We are of average means and still have plenty of money, earned, not inherited, through hard work, living within our means and teaching ourselves about money investment,. I would pay to have piece of mind.
written by B. Smith:
I hear folks say they love their elderly parents, their lgbtq+ family members, their handicapped cousins... turn around and vote for trump. They say well my 401k is doing great!
trump's chief of staff admitted they never intended to try and control covid, trump's son-in-law used a racist bullhorn on national tv about "those lazy people of color don't want to be successful" the senate just voted for a judge that openly admits she wants to over turn Roe v Wade, the ACA and is a religious zealot. His administration sent parents back to the countries they fled with no way to locate them and reunite them with their children. He can't answer questions from a 60 Minutes reporter without having a tantrum and storming out like a spoiled child, before covid there was 200,000 less manufacturing jobs then on the day he took office in 2017, but hey that 401k of yours is more important! Here is some advice when your parent or grandparent dies from covid go hug that 401k and thank your family member for taking one for your bottom line. When your lgbtq+ niece loses her job because her loving another woman goes against her boss's religion show her how well your retirement fund is doing, I'm sure she'll understand!
When your wife is facing a life threatening pregnancy but can't get the abortion that would save her, just tell her if she dies you will think fondly of her every time you check your monthly statement.
If you are voting for trump because he is a tough guy and good for your bottom line, just remember he is the man who ran away from Lesley Stahl cause she was "mean and nasty" to him by asking the question "what do you hope to accomplish in your second term, should you win?" Real cowboy of him, turned tail and bolted. You think he would sit and have a conversation with you? Think he would invite you to one of his clubs? No he wouldn't. He sees his supporters as easy marks, and you prove him right if you vote for him again. He doesn't care about his own family except for what they can do FOR HIM. He would step over their and your dying body to pick up a nickel.
I feel sorry for the folks who think he is good for the country, he's not even good for his own family. He is a vain, shallow man who needs to be thrown into the dustbin of history and forgotten like the trash he is and will always be.

Sounds like the bus company found out liar is broke, they wouldn’t be paid, so called the drivers in. The hell with whoever was left out in the cold.

Since the only place I plan to go on Tuesday is to an exercise class, I hope that, instead of pearls, wearing my RBG teeshirt will be an acceptable alternative!

Hi all: coming out of lurking mode to tell you about my own experiences as a Poll Monitor; maybe it will lift some of you up. (or so I hope): I signed up for a non-partisan volunteer effort, Protect the Vote, which here in New Mexico is being organized by the ACLU and Common Cause. Yes, NM is a Blue State, but it is one of 7 states that the Reps chose to target for 'voter challenging' efforts (we all know what that means). I am not sure why NM was chosen, other than possibly in the hopes of flipping the one vulnerable Congressional District (in Southern NM) back to red (it flipped blue in 2016 and the Reps are pouring lots and lots of money into attack ads on the Democratic one term incumbent, Xochitl Torres Small)...In any case, the Reps have already filed a lawsuit against the Secretary of State here about not being able to take a close look at absentee ballots as they are dropped off at the early polling places, for those who don't want to mail them in. One issue is that NM has a law that in addition to requiring one's signature on the outer ballot, they require the last four digits of the voter's social security number: well, no one wants strangers saying they are 'election challengers' to see that private information. (Personally, I believe this law should be overturned in the next session; will be talking to my State Representative, a Democrat who also happens to be the husband of a co-worker of mine-the advantage of living in a less populated state, about doing just this).
Anyway, I've been poll watching the last two weekends during early voting; will be watching again this weekend and on election day. I've been assigned to stand outside the polling place, go in periodically to see how things are going inside (sometimes we will have two persons on a shift: one outside and one inside), keep an eye on the lines and keep an eye out for any issues, call the ACLU attorneys if there are any issues, and also to help voters who have questions. I have a small sign, wear a button, large badge and a mask, all of which indicate that I am non-partisan, that I can answer general questions, and also have a toll free hotline number that folks can call if they run into any issues.
I've been assigned to three different polling places on different shifts: in all three the early voting lines were longest at the beginning and have tapered down, but even at their longest the wait was never more than 40 to 60 minutes, often much less or no wait at all. NM is doing a good job, and has more polling places than many states with bigger populations: we total just over 2M people in the entire state (yes, that is less than half of the population of Harris County/Houston, TX, with its single polling place!). In Santa Fe County alone (population just over 150,000) there are 8 early voting sites. And there will be even more polling places on Election Day.
As for issues, there have been some, but thankfully very few. I get the most questions about dropping off absentee ballots. I always ask to be sure they are sealed, signed and have those four ssec numbers, without looking closely at them, and then let folks know there is no need to wait in the line if dropping off a ballot. I also take and turn in notes on general conditions at the polling place: ADA compliance, Covid-19 rule compliance, adequate signage and parking, availability of help for those who don't speak English, etc.: this information is tallied and shared with the county clerk and Secretary of State, both to fix any immediate problems and to provide information to do an even better job next election.
We did have a Republican challenger at my very first assigned site: he had no identifying information, and he was 'challenging' voters turning in absentee ballots, by getting in their faces (literally), WHILE NOT WEARING THE REQUIRED MASK), and trying to get them to not turn in their ballot by asking to look at it, questioning signatures, that type of thing. I came on my shift part way through his time there, so didn't see all of what he did, but the reports from others were that he really wasn't keeping anyone from voting, he was just upsetting them by getting within inches of them and being verbally abusive and yelling, while not wearing the required mask. Well, both the ACLU and the county election officials had been called before I got there, and county officials came out and stayed there until he left, making him go outside unless he put on his mask (he did have one; not wearing it appeared to be part of the 'challenging', aka suppression, effort.) He eventually left altogether; I imagine he didn't feel effective. (thank G*d). I've been back at the polling place, one of the bigger ones in Santa Fe, twice since, and there have been no further 'challenger' issues. So, since that first bit of excitement I have found my volunteer gig to be quiet, and I feel like as much as anything I am directing traffic to be sure people know what to do. As I stand there in weather that is becoming increasingly like winter, I just remind myself of Winston Churchill's words from the poet Milton, 'they also serve who only stand and wait'.
It has been a very nice experience: I get to know my new adopted state, I've met some great people, and I feel like I am doing something positive. This is part of a national effort, and I believe they are still looking for Election Day volunteers, so if anyone is interested: here is a link: https://protectthevote.net/about/ The link includes hot line numbers in at least seven languages, so keep it handy, and if you see something, say something!
Love to all and thanks for helping to keep me sane in these crazy times!

A group of retired teachers (including me) meets every Wednesday morning for a walk and visit (we call ourselves the Wednesday Walking Women or WWW). We like to celebrate holidays, do some community service, advocate for things we care about, and support each other during good and bad times. We post a picture on Facebook of each week's adventure. I am sharing this weeks collage with you today along with our non-partisan message (most of us are Democrats or unhappy old-fashioned Republicans.....I can safely say that ZERO of us are Trump fans).
WWW dons our Red, White & Blue to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote. We are committed to exercising that hard-won right and encourage all women, and men, to join us. Get informed, make a plan, VOTE!

November 3rd - hmmm - I'll get up & put on my pearls. I'll be walking 5 miles - pearls will look fine with a sweatshirt, levis & tennis shoes. In fact I remember my Mother telling me we should wear pearls all the time because they are enhanced by contact with your skin (without perfume of course). Then I'll be reading an escape book - likely a mystery. Finally cooking a nice dinner with a good bottle of red wine. And listening either to some Bach or some Jackson Browne. Or both. I will not be going out. I will NOT be turning on the TV. Just can't stand any more "news", that as Jackie says - changes every day or even every hour.
November 4th I'll get up, retrieve my newspaper from the driveway and open it up to see IF we have a winner. Then I can cheer & dance or cry & get drunk. Or find out that we still don't know the answer.

Just chatted with relative in Wisconsin. She dropped off ballots for herself and daughter. Her husband, who hasn't voted since she's known him, will vote in person for Democrats. He's always leaned Republican.👍👍👍

Not sure what we will do on Nov 3rd. I do know Dh will HAVE to watch although in the beginning it can be quite slow. I'll hate seeing anything that comes in as win for Trump. I've tried so hard not to totally hate Trump because I feel like REAL hate could damage me more than the person who would never know about it or care. I know it simmers most of the time below the surface and just sheer force of not allowing the thoughts I could have is all that contains it.
So, I guess I will know how things seem to be going all along. I also think there is some accessory news I might like to hear -- things that may have taken place at the polls or in some cases is going on. Since we are in Illinois we can be getting news from on past us later on for some time. I would love to be able to tune out like Minus, but just not in the cards. At least, since I'm tired most days ( my days have been so full lately with jobs, appts. ( mainly medical ones ) and extra things needing to be done for those I work for and the lady I help. I likely will just fall asleep in my recliner. Already told Dh, throw a lap robe over me and just let me sleep. If I miss a lot, oh well !!
I think, depending on the states, it could be possible to actually be able to predict a winner that night and I hope that happens. Whatever is going to take place after the election, the sooner we get through it, I hope the better. Hope there are a lot of plans for just how to deal with the people that may be 'warring' for Trump. I really worry since that side does seem to be fairly open about what they are doing -- like maybe they don't feel in the end it will matter because of their 'warring' factors. I pray they are totally wrong about that.

I think the deal here is: maybe anyone who felt they just had to get out to the Omaha airport to see Trump may not care what they had to go through -- but I do very much think that friends, neighbors and others from the state may have ideas about this latest cruelty -- even if they were for Trump. Everyone can come to the end of their rope.
