Oh, I love this thread. The memes and the sanity keep me going!
A couple of posts above the wonderful curtain-wearing memes:
"Only a psychopath would call for more police brutality to end protests against police brutality."
Here's a little report from Portland. It's not burning. It's as beautiful as ever, as we walk around in the sunny summer weather, socially distancing with our masks on during the day, enjoying our parks and bridges and walking areas. The nightly demonstrators are passionate. Sometimes loud, and yes, sometimes they throw things, and there's certainly graffiti. At this point, some of the graffiti is now invited, by the businesses in that area (near government buildings in a small downtown area) and lots of it is social justice art.
The violence and physical harm to other humans is almost all from the cops and from the US Marshalls who were recently sent to "quell" the disorder. Journalists and demonstrators have been shot at by rubber bullets, and they are regularly being tear-gassed. Tear gas was outlawed for use as a chemical weapon in wars by the 1925 Geneva Protocol.
There was looting at the very beginning of all this, and it was awful, and quite a bit of property was destroyed by a very small number of looters. Weirdly, the cops ignored the looters and did not intervene. Instead, they attacked the outer phalanx of peaceful protestors, trying to disperse them. Two people who were there that first night or two described it to me exactly this way.
Portland has an unconscionable history of racism, and of cops killing Black people and mentally ill people. The social justice indignation and passion is palpable. The Wall of Moms and Naked Athena are some examples of peaceable freedom of expression. Progress is being made --slowly, but fruitfully--with city government and demonstrators talking through reforms. Local authorities have been recognizing the people's right to peaceably assemble. Some of the cops feel that the demonstrators' voices are an attack on their institution, of course. The people feel that the cops need to stop killing Black people, and also stop inflicting unnecessary violence and brutality.
Democracy is messy, sometimes. But deploying a national military force of jackbooted "StormTrooper" thugs* against citizens is a horrifying, fascism-flavored response to people's pleas for social justice.
The First Amendment is certainly being tested, as is the Rule of Law, with the federal agents wearing unmarked uniforms without insignias, driving unmarked vans, and detaining citizens without due process.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

I have to disagree about the "behavior" of the "people of Portland." The provocateurs and vandals who come out at night are not the peaceful daylight protestors. They are largely agitators looking to provoke police (including the storm troopers)--or even, as a friend of mine who has studied social movements since the '60s says, perhaps even acting in concert with them. And definitely extreme-right "Boogalo Bois" not only trying to foment a race war but also smear BLM and progressives as well. Anti-Fascists have never been shy about operating in broad daylight: but dressing in black, spray-painting crude "circle-A" logos after dark, and throwing projectiles at police are NOT characteristic of Antifa (which isn't even an organization)
it's an outrage that the moms trying to protect the nonviolent demonstrators are getting tear-gassed, and an unarmed 60-something Navy veteran gets brutally beaten just for asking a question--albeit one that hits close to home for those armed goons with guilty (sub)consciences.

ChiSandy I agree with you completely. There's an element of NON-peaceful dissent as well, yes, indeed, and it's horrible. I happen to see dozens of FB posts weekly of the peaceful parts, from peacenik and social-justice, committed non-violent people who participate in the peaceful parts of the demonstrations each night. They describe the tone of the evenings as uplifting and united, and they also hate the violent and destructive participants who seem to show up as well.
Most people I know are against fascism as a matter of patriotic principle, but not in any organized way, and not in any sense of the wayTrump imagines a current and threatening Antifa movement. At the Portland demonstrations, occasionally the Proud Boys and Boogalo Bois also show up. I deplore their world views, and the violence, and the destruction of property, as does everyone I know. Freedom of speech gets pretty messy, for sure....

Peter Wehner, a senior fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, writes for Atlantic about Trump, "the psychologically broken, embittered, and deeply unhappy man. He is so gripped by his grievances, such a prisoner of his resentments, that even the most benevolent question from an interviewer -- what good parts of your presidency would you like to be remembered for? -- triggered a gusher of discontent."I looked at that question and did think to Trump, talking about when he was not in the WH sounded as though he had lost something. He can't see beyond today either. So while this was never, ever about a successful person in this most special job, he did not develop anything that was good. If there was good others did it and handed it to him. He I don' believe has any real vision. No matter what he is up to, he is always cycling through a game -- unable to develop the highs or lows that normal people might experience. That is truly broken because in his case it is not fixable. When he leaves ( soon I hope ) he won't have highs and lows, and likely will cycle into whatever comes next with the same broken reception and attitude that has made much more of a loser of him in life.

I presume this one will get under Trump's skin really well. But then, it will be one of the few times we can actually laugh during this hideous horror show. Shame on the boatload of Reps. who enable this clown who makes no one laugh.
Lincoln Project Seinfeld-Inspired Laugh-Track Ad
Posted: 22 Jul 2020 06:33 AM PDT
The ad begins with an image of the White House and the caption "Trumpfeld," which is modeled after the logo for "Seinfeld," along with music similar to the hit '90s sitcom's signature theme song. The video plays a laugh track over several of Trump's comments, including his repeated denial of several Fox News polls.0 -
Love the ad!

The memes are fabulous. Oh, the draperies, Melania and Carol Burnett's Scarlett, loved it!
Dan Rather's comments on preventable deaths is sobering truth.
I hope people listened to what Trump said in the Chris Wallace interview because his remarks are staggering:
"We find cases and many of those cases heal automatically."
"Many of those cases are young people that would heal in a day. They have the sniffles, and we put it down as a test."
"I built the greatest economy ever built anywhere in the world; not only of this country, anywhere in the world."
"It is what it is. Take a look at Europe," Trump said of the fact that the U.S. is seeing nearly 1,000 coronavirus deaths a day, despite saying he takes the virus "very seriously."

These 5 words may cost Trump a second term
Analysis by Chris Cillizza, CNN Editor-at-large, Wed July 22, 2020
On July 21, 2016, Donald Trump formally became the Republican presidential nominee.
In his acceptance speech, Trump made this bold claim:
"I have joined the political arena so that the powerful can no longer beat up on people that cannot defend themselves. Nobody knows the system better than me, which is why I alone can fix it."
Far from being the only one who can solve this biggest problem facing the country, Trump has proven to many people over these past few months that he was -- and is -- simply not the right person to lead America through this (the pandemic) sort of crisis.

Librarian, your observation of Trump yard signs being pretty thick in NC are well worth noting. (That's Franklin Graham country and it sounds like a lot of NC people gulp his kind of koolaide). In the summer and fall of 2016, by sheer happenstance, I ended up traveling all over Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania checking things off my Wander List. The Trump signage in my face was literally astounding. In all three states, we passed through well-to-do neighborhoods, Appalachian backroads and parts in-between and the Trump flags, signs and banners were equally proliferous throughout. I could only feel an impending sense of dread the more I saw.

Before I go any farther then the quote, I have to say that is one of the VERY best memes I have seen about Trump, Ruth. Since I spend some time at 'Call To Activism' and missed that I am so glad you put it here. It is such relief when something like a meme can present the truth ( often dour, scary, or sickening ) in a way that takes the lump of intimidation and dread out of your throat, and you breathe a good sigh of relief. Thank You.

This and drawing an elephant. Phucking genius.
No matter that I actually know, I'll still forever be asking why, why, why did we have to have such a degraded being occupying the WH.

I think its a fair question with a young person asking it.

Hmmm, this is something I have been thinking about for a few days. Even when the 'loon' is on t.v. talking about how bad things are I've wondered why he doesn't RECALL that not very much was going on when he got elected and given a totally peaceful welcome into the WH. As with so many other gifts, Pres. Obama gave, a good economy, willing allies, and some wonderful career people, he also gave him a U.S. not full of chaos and total upset.
Not good enough for Trump, Bannon, Miller, and the crew from Hell. What is now is what was asked for.

This could be a whole lot of Trump's un-doing. He just doesn't get that men may call him a good ole' locker room guy, but mom's/women usually just won't put up with it. Women have spines.

Ruth -- another big winner. I love her shirt.

Love the above shirt. Once when Dr. Google is correct.
As far as the comparison between Melanai and the window drapes, sorry to say but I think the drapes won and they were most likely not from some overpriced designer. JCPenney anyone?
Loved that Carol Burnett skit amd even her version of the Scarleet O'Hara dress beat Melania's thumbs down.
Thanks for today's laughs and words of wisdom.

WOOOHOOOO!! The RNC has canceled the convention in Jacksonville. He’s lying in his teeth again about protecting the ppl. He doesn’t give a damn about ppl. The Duval County Sherrif said he couldn’t pull off the necessary security. The residents didn’t want so many extra germs there. I didn’t want any of them coming here with their potential germs. Yay!!

Barron's private school will be doing "remote learning" this coming term.
And I like the David Hogg meme, Jackie, but I doubt Hogg wrote it: he is too well-educated and intelligent to post an incoherent and misspelled question. (It should read "Where were the police with riot gear and tear gas when white supremacists were storming our state capitols with guns?").
