Wouldn't it be ironic if the senators who won't vote to impeach lose their next elections because they overestimated how many people in their district are Trumpers?

Well, as much as I dislike Nikki, I wish the rest of the Republicans would come to the same realization and jump ship, even if it is only to save their own skin. Trump, I would venture to say, is the most dangerous politician in American history. I jump read a fascinating article in the latest Time magazine about how close we came to losing our democracy and how groups from across the ideological spectrum came together to wage a behind-the-scene effort to save it. It's the February 15-22 issue. The article is titled "How Close We Came- The Secret History of the Shadow Campaign that Saved the Election".

Ruth, I read that same article but somewhere else -- just don't recall. It was scary and the enormous amt. of work it took to keep us on the democratic path. Just astounding.

Spookiesmom -- I love it. All those signs just really go to say who our president and first lady are. All their belief's are on those signs. I also read on the way here an article ( for the second time today and two different places ) that Mrs. Trump in Fla. is a bit miffed that Jill Biden is getting so much positive attention and apparently staff and outfitted quarters for her office etc. It was mentioned and is true -- that in so many cases Ms. Trump was offered spots where a first lady could make an appearance and she mostly turned them all down. Below her I guess -- who knows. It did say likely she now SEES some of the reasons why you might do these things. Same thing as those here who are in business and join several of the local clubs and donate time to worthy causes that go on here.

Mrs. Biden having been second lady for 8 yrs. does know the ropes far better than Trump, but then when most of your grounding is keeping care of your body so you can model, I might say your well of understanding many of your possible purposes on this earth likely dried up some time back. I think both the Trump's are and have been so into THEMSELVES for so long their ability to get on in the world outside themselves is almost nil.

This is so jarring when we see and hear this -- and the Reps think we are not seeing or hearing anything. Will it be a shock when they get a flash on the fact we were seeing it and hearing it all along.

Ruth, I found and read the article you mentioned from Time, “How Close We Came- The Secret History of the Shadow Campaign that Saved the Election“. It is quite interesting:

“Sometime in the fall of 2019, Mike Podhorzer became convinced the election was headed for disaster–and determined to protect it.“ “What he wanted to know not how American democracy was dying but how it might be kept alive.”

Thank God for this man and all those who joined forces with him to ensure a fair election! In my heart of hearts, I had hoped there was something like this going on behind the scenes. Not sure if any of you remember that the week before the election, in the midst of the angst I was feeling, I had a dream that a group of people I was with but did not know spontaneously started singing “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”, with different people coming in at the right time to sing all four rounds of it. When the song was over, I marveled at how harmoniously it all came together. It gave me a good feeling; I woke up with at least temporary relief of my angst. I hoped it was a good omen. After reading the Time story, who knows? Maybe on some spiritual level between those who are like minded for a worthy cause, there was some communication going on!

Yes, we were perilously close to losing our democracy. Learning how very precariously things were with the Michigan legislators is scary, even after the fact! Podhorzer’s coalition was on it! That’s the spectacular part, they used all their knowledge and pull to let democracy’s voices be heard.

And this coalition convinced the liberal side not to head to the Capitol to counter Trump protestors, such a great call.

It truly helps knowing that people like this are among us!

GOOD for you Caryn. Hoping you un-eventually recover well now and feel a 100% better.

Divine, I'm with you on the, Maybe on some spiritual level between those who are like minded for a worthy cause, there was some communication going on! I'm a great believer as many know, that there are almost always un-seen forces at work on things. I also believe often we are brought nearly to the edge, and then providence takes over to keep us from going under.

As for today -- especially if we reach a point where the for or against vote is taken I can only think -- who knows. Like many, if the vote could be secret --- Trump would go down like greased lighting -- but since that is not the way its done -- one has to hope there are enough voting for conviction to at least make a showing. If we were by some fortune able to actually do it -- great. I do fear that knowing Trump is going to face other 'trials' with less of a political nature as such, that many who might otherwise vote yea will leave the 'dirty' work for others. Sadly, I think they are missing the mark badly since accountability later could be quite harsh for them. We will just have to wait it out.

By the way -- I know which lawyers I would not dream of using were I in a fix. Between the lying -- total buffonery.

    Hi Ruth and all:

A big storm is coming into New Mexico this afternoon, possibly our biggest of the season thus far, or at least the highest winds, and will bring snow as well. I am happy for the snow (we are in a severe drought) but unfortunately I have some errands and such I must get done and my best window for good roads and visibility for the next few days is this am...So, will miss the zoom. Very sorry to miss it, staying at home with a cup of coffee sounds quite appealing right now.

Hope to see you all next time!

Ruth, will miss the Zoom today, too. Hello to all who can be there.

Just read the Senate has voted to call witnesses and Mitch is indicating he will vote to acquit. Agree with Jackie about knowing the lawyers I would not use, but then again why should they work hard when the outcome appears to be set in stone? So sad.

This is what I sent to all senators. I know most never got or read it. I doubt if they will convict. Thinking of a few edits after the vote and sending to letter to editor.

Senators, you have been presented with the arguments why you should convict Trump and bar him from public office in the future. He was impeached by the House while in office. The Senate's job is to hear the evidence, and convict or not convict. Saying that what he did was wrong, but he cannot be convicted since he is no longer in office is a weak attempt to not do an anything. To say his speech and tweets to rioters is protected as free speech, is ludicrous.

The first Amendment protecting free speech is critical to our nation. The Free speech protects citizens from government. It does not protect government from accountability. Impeachment does not restrict free speech but serves to protect us from presidents who threaten the Nation. Free speech loses meaning if presidents are allowed to overturn elections through lies and violence. Put America before Trump.

He incited the January 6, 2021 insurrection. He had the opportunity to encourage rioters to leave peacefully, instead he chose to tell them "fight like hell". As things grew worse, Trump tweeted the rioters that Pence lacked the courage to overturn the election. These actions were proceeded by months of challenging a democratic process and attempts to intimidate election officials to overturn the results in their states, priming the violence that followed. Congress and the Vice president donned gas masks, and hid in fear. As some tried to flee to a more secure area, officers had to shield them from the rioters. Is this the new America, the America of the future?

No matter what happens, all of Trump's crimes are now spelled out in black & white. The Senators can no longer plead ignorance to what has been said, encouraged, and done.

DH just read that two of djt's most profitable enterprises are ones in which he holds only partial ownership and his partners want to buy him out (or get him out of the partnership somehow)so his name is no longer associated with the businesses.

Cm2020, take a deep breath, the likelihood of a conviction appears to be basically slim to none. I do wonder what the results would be if the vote was by secret ballot rather than roll call.

Georgia has opened an investigation into his call to find the votes. DC is considering charges for inciting the riot. NY state has 2 cases against him. Palm Beach is trying to evict him from MAL. I’m sure there will be more suits against him. Too bad the Rs don’t have spines, think Ds will use this in mid terms.
