Compassion is the basis of all truthful relationship: it means being present with love--for ourselves and for all life, including animals, fish, birds, and trees. Compassion is bringing our deepest truth into our actions, no matter how much the world seems to resist, because that is ultimately what we have to give this world and one another. -Ram Dass

Great posts, ChiSandy and Spookies mom. Did not Floridians hear DeSantis when he said Fl was God's waiting room?

My DS refuses to get the vaccine and this is mindboggling considering that for many years I was an Infection Control Practitioner. His wife has opted to get it and vaccinated my GS who is eligible but my GD is still ineligible because she is only 5. My DDIL's son from her first marriage was holding out until his GF told him to get it or their relationship was over. Needless to say, he capitulated. I am still working on my DS but find that being persistent makes him backoff so I take pauses.

I've listened with half an ear to the news the past couple of days. It does sound as if the orange former guy is In a dither about some of the newest books coming out about him. I think he has sounded off most about Carol Leonnig and Phillip Rucker. Their latest book " I Alone Can Fix It. ". I will likely get the book and mainly for what they will say about 1/6. What led up to the day, during the day, and the few days after.

At any rate, I'm sure it is difficult to read the 'real' truth. I do feel like for the most part the orange thing deceives himself as much as he deceives the rest of us, including his chosen party. Still I always presume there is some little place where truth resides no matter how well you try to ignore it. I'm hoping we see some movement soon on some of his court actions through SDNY or DOJ. It has gone back to being slow and quiet.

Ohmygosh, the memes are fantastic. Anti-Everything and Mr. Careless are still hanging around! L Graham please go choke on a chicken sandwich. And yep, the deplorable description barely scratched the surface.

Jackie, I’m not sure I can stomach reading any of those recently released books on the orange presidency. Maybe in time I will. Just the phrase “I alone can fix it” sends me into a tizzy. How in the world could anyone put faith in someone spewing such bs? Those are words to gag on.

I did catch a few paragraphs from a CNN article on the book:

“The top US military officer, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Mark Milley, was so shaken that then-President Donald Trump and his allies might attempt a coup or take other dangerous or illegal measures after the November election that Milley and other top officials informally planned for different ways to stop Trump, according to excerpts of an upcoming book obtained by CNN.

The book, from Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post reporters Carol Leonnig and Philip Rucker, describes how Milley and the other Joint Chiefs discussed a plan to resign, one-by-one, rather than carry out orders from Trump that they considered to be illegal, dangerous or ill-advised.”

The revelation is both chilling and a relief. And chilling. Knowing cooler heads would have (hopefully) prevailed but also knowing those conversations were held. Smh

Divine, I understand. I do think there is a lot of repetition in books on Orange and many of his closer minions. To that end, I didn't even see this part of the book in your excerpt: The book, from Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post reporters Carol Leonnig and Philip Rucker, describes how Milley and the other Joint Chiefs discussed a plan to resign, one-by-one, rather than carry out orders from Trump that they considered to be illegal, dangerous or ill-advised."

I had no idea that they ( Joint Chiefs ) spoke of resigning one by one, should Trump give orders they knew would be so highly destructive to democracy. So, that is why I will get the book by Leonnig and Rucker and might get the Bender one. Not so sure about Wolfe. It was said that the orange one sat down with each of the authors and for some reason thought he would be presenting himself in a better light. He has no idea that he has NO better light. He just thinks he can buffalo people into his version of who he is. He has done it with so many, but people who insist on truth are not great candidates. He is so narcissistic that he just has to feed his inner self and can't get that he is not polishing his story and image by what he does.

Hard to believe so many of the people who follow this guy are really okay with childish outbursts like this. Still makes me think the truth has a way to dig in, in ways that is hard to ignore. This guy just HAS to devise an answer -- and to so many of us he makes the situation transparently worse on his own behalf.

Exactly my thought, Divine. That is the most succinct description of Trump I've ever heard. "He has no better side."

I am so stealing that Illinois Lady.

There is another thread, (started by our own DivineMrsM) where one the posters is expressing her admiration for conservative women, including the former first lady. It's obvious from the way she phrases things that she's a Fox News watcher. I've had to bite my tongue and not post what I really think about those particular women, especially Melania Trump. Never been a big fan of having a tacky, classless, gold digging "lingerie model" as our first lady. Or first gentleman for that matter.

I just don't understand how you can call yourself a feminist and support the current Republican party. They've done everything they can to set women's rights back a generation. If they had their way, we'd be living in the 1950's, where women knew their place.

I won't start a political food fight on your thread, Divine. I'll just post my rant here, where it won't offend.

    trishyla,

I did post about the fact that Melania may not be multilingual as is often claimed and that she originally claimed to be a university graduate, which she is not. Perhaps that is why she was never “appreciated”. As a First Lady she was virtually invisible, mostly silent, and did nothing with her Be Best campaign. Most of us just shook our heads at her anti-bullying campaign considering that bullying is her husband’s main MO.

Happily, no one responded to my comment because that might have turned Camille’s excellent thread into a food fight. Admiring Margaret Thatcher and Nancy Reagan? I will hold my tongue!

I nearly lost it over some of the people she was praising. Governor "I don't care how many people die for my political stunt" Kristi Noem? Really? That's the best you can do,?

You were much more restrained than I could have been. I have no patience with the willfully ignorant. I just want to blast them out of the water, using those pesky things called facts, but it does no good. I have to keep reminding myself that facts just don't matter to certain people.

Remember, I just retired from a long career as an elementary school teacher. I have loads of patience! I am trying not to waste any of my precious time on pointless debates with those who have their heads deeply embedded in the sand. Yes, I forgot Kristi Noem, ugh. I have no issue with solid conservative values, though I don’t share them. I do have an issue with outright refusal to acknowledge reality, despite a plethora of evidence, when it comes to some of the urgent issues our country is facing. Their lies and alternative facts are killing people and destroying democracy.

Admiring Margaret Thatcher? All I could think of was the huge balloon head of Thatcher that appears at the opening of the second act in the musical, Billy Elliot, accompanied by an anti-Thatcher musical number. It was quite funny!

Ladies, I had to bite my tongue and leave the feminism forum before I ended up in BCO jail. This particular poster would counter you if you stated the color of the sky was blue with some absurdity she is known for posting. So I decided to save my breath since ignorance cannot be canceled with facts. Slapping her silly would not gain anything more than a sore hand and not one iota of increased IQ. Rants do help and I wish I could find my "damn" doll. It had appendages attached by velcro that one could remove and throw at will. Great stress reliever.

As far as solid conservative values, I do take exception to those that make a woman subservient to a man, are anti-christian and racist.

I always wonder how Barron will feel when someday when one of his peers shows him a picture of his mother in her sleaze days in the raw? The one of her draped on the piano was mild compared to some others that have been posted and are still out there. If charity begins at home, should not anti-bullying also begin there? Not that either one of them is charitable nor anti-bullying. I was not a fan of Melania, did not feel that she represented the role of FLOTUS in a positive light (in spite of designer clothes), is classless and feel she is a grifter.

The poster in question's role models are not mine and not women I find memorable nor admirable. Many of the women she touted are really not feminists either. The one exception being Florence Nightingale who was and refused to let Victorian rules govern her behavior regarding healthcare reforms. She fought an uphill battle against a male dominated British society, societal norms and improved the lives of soldiers, prostitutes and the poor.

Ladies, I get where you’re coming from. Since I'm the OP, I want to remain open-minded on the other thread. As was immediately pointed out to me, I don't own the word feminism, not that I claimed I did, but to clear up that confusion, I went on to ask others to describe what feminism means to them. While some posters may have views that don't make sense to me, I respect that it is their interpretation. The thread is very new and needs time to meander and unfold. I don’t know what roads it will lead down, bu I'm in it for now.

It doesn't even matter if no one else posts on there, I still will be. My inspiration comes from our own IllinoisLady who's always contributed to the Dead Rocker group even during times when interest was low. Thank ya, Jackie! ♥️

One reason I started the other thread is because of how often my thoughts overlap on politics, religion and feminism; the first two have some dedicated threads but It was surprising that there wasn't one on feminism, most especially on this site where members are overwhelmingly female. I felt the topic could be explored.

I appreciate the women of this liberal thread so very much!

Divine, I had no idea ( where was my head -- no don't tell me okay ) you had started a thread. I think I am mainly a politics and religion ( more spiritual ) person. I did keep he Older Women's forum going and for a few weeks was almost the only poster. A good friend took pity on me and posted as well. Now it is a beautiful thread. Everyone gets along and the only hard rule is scant posting of political or religious entries. light mentions are fine, but kept very light and dropped as an on-going topic.

I am very much generally a heavy poster here. In my earlier days I worked so much I had little time for banter of any kind and politics was usually way down the list. I came here in the early Obama yrs. Life had changed its pace for me and I could devote way more time to our politics ( Democratic liberal with a bit of progressive to round out ) which had become so exciting to me. It still remains majorly important to me and I rely on the views and ideas here to help me define how I see the political world especially. I think I will always need help and the input of others ideas

Divine: Your forum so far is informative and it is interesting to see how the definition of feminism differs between age groups but also political ideology. Knowing that there are some like or sympathetic minds here, is sort of a safe space to vent politically. It was the same in graduate school where the class was comprised of women in the same profession but representing different generations. So what the younger women took for granted, the older group knew we had worked hard to achieve those gains. Sometimes we had to gently remind them that it wasn't always that way and we expected them to pick up the baton and pass it on.

So keep at it, I will visit and bite my tongue as needed but the one comment about " drawing lines" upset me because that is selective feminism per their definition. It is something that inhibits our progression since it seeks to marginalize some because they don't fit in their narrow interpretation. I think you are trying to promote inclusion and unity and that message was neither.

    Betrayal,

I just got off a FaceTime call with my dearest friend. She is retired now but was an assistant DA in Bronx County as well as an assistant AG for the state of NY. She said that she is absolutely floored when she hears younger generations speak withvery limited or no knowledge of the history of the women’s movement. I sometimes think that even my own adult dd’s, both mothers as well as professionals, do not have a full understanding of how the collective history of the women’s movement eased the path for them in many ways. We still have to work on the imbalance that often exists in a household when both parents work, i.e. women do more of the childcare and household chores but that’s a whole ‘nother discussion!

Jackie, your words express how I, too, feel about this thread: “the views and ideas here help me define how I see the political world.....I think I will always need help and the input of others ideas."

Betrayal, I agree that this thread is a political safe place for which I'm grateful. I went through the other thread and could not find the 'drawing the line' comment you mentioned. Can you shed more light on that? At any rate, I'm glad you'll continue visiting that thread and hopefully contribute as you see fit because I love reading your views.

Exbrnxgrl, it's frustrating that younger women take many of things for granted that older generations of women fought to gain. It sounds like high school history classes needs to educate all students on women's history.

Don't you suppose it is always the case that generations who follow a shift don't remember, or at least can't really understand, what it was like for those who went before? When my grandmother was young, it was illegal to disseminate birth control information. I know that, but can't begin to imagine what that was like. I know that until not that long ago, you'd go into a pregnancy knowing there was a pretty good chance that you would not survive (especially if repeated pregnancies had already worn you down). I can't imagine what that was like. Before vaccinations and other medical advances, it was rare NOT to have a child/ children die before they reach adulthood. I know this but can't imagine what it was like to go through. Trying to put yourself in the mindset of previous generations is fascinating, and often sobering.

"I'm a simple feminist where I believe all transwomen are men and all transmen are women and should stay in their lane, especially when it comes to sport, prison and rape shelters". Divine, this is the statement that perhaps I misunderstood but felt was marginalizing people based on gender assignment rather than how they perceive themselves gender wise. Should have said lane rather than line but it still to me was discriminatory. I don't think this person has posted since this statement. I don't hink the reaction they sought was realized. I chose to ignore it.

We were required to report the gender distribution in our assigned classes and I disputed having to determine that since it was based on physical appearance or presentation. Had a tough time convincing the Dean that this was judgmental and that because I was not going to examine genitalia to do so, that the students would self-report on my form. I asked other faculty how they felt about this at one of our level meetings and they all agreed. So unified we told the Dean the students could self-report to ensure the data was accurate since it was a state requirement.

Ruth, I do genealogy and found a descendant of my ggf's first wife to research the family line with. The first wife died in childbirth after bearing 6 live children and her last baby (#7) died with her. Most of these children did not make it to adulthood due to childhood diseases, TB, etc. I am descended from the second wife and while more of these children survived to adulthood, several did not. These poor women had a child a year, many well into their 40's when they were just worn out.
