Wow!! Everyone's short hair looks beautiful. I had my last chemo 10/11. I'm not sure how long my hair should be by now - I keep shaving my head. I'm waiting until I see a nice even shadow - then I will let it grow. My boyfriend is military - he likes my head shaved. I live where the Navy SEALS train...so there are a lot of bald heads - mine is not the only one. I feel most comfortable wearing nothing on my head.:)

I was always more comfortable just wearing nothing on that bald head of mine - nobody really ever seemed to notice. I was definitely more paranoid the couple of times I wore a wig (DS wedding and DD first communion). It was really cold because I started chemo in February so I wore a lot of hats for warmth and scarves around my neck because the back of your neck gets really cold. My chemo was done in May and I have just shy of 2 inches now but it's way curly and doesn't look that long.

Achpurple, I'm with you - I felt a bit off wearing my wig. It is a beautiful wig - but when I wear it I am given the feeling that something went wrong with my body. Oh right - I had breast cancer...:) When I wear nothing on my head I feel physically comfortable - and completely forget that I do not have any hair. I forget that I even have had breast cancer. You are right - it is like no one even notices. At least not in a negative way. I do get complimented on my "haircut."
When I was younger, I wanted to have a shaved head but my parents wouldn't let me. Come to think of it - when I was younger I wanted larger breasts, too. There is an example for being careful for what you wish for. Lol
Our select population's quest for hair - regardless of to wig or not to wig...it is all the same - a psychological quest for the personal feeling of normalcy. It is all good.:)0 -
You guys are the best! I went to work today topless and everyone was so supportive - except for the accounting girl who is a total witch anyway so I don't care! Ha ha! All I can say about her is KARMA baby!
Love you all!

@wavewhisper-I got it locally. I tried many wigs on before I found it.
It was in blonde and I had her hold it for me. By the time I went and got it, I exchanged it for the auburn. Might as well have some fun!
Try a bunch on. You will find one you will feel good in. It took me several visits!

Ugh, you guys all look so awesome, I'm about 9 weeks PFC, and still have VERY LITTLE hair. A little bit of peach fuzz, all white, but there's still some shiny scalp showing through. It's coming so slow. The onco said I'd probably be happy with it by Christmas, but that's a lot of growth to come in less than 2 weeks now. I'm SO impatient!!!!!! And I feel like my hair isn't going to come back ever!!!! I hate my wig, and my bald head! I can feel hair...but it's so thin and white, there isn't much to see! Hoping for some turbo growth here!

a little over 5 weeks since my last chemo and my hair is finally starting to sprout! I am stoked! LOL

6.5 wks pfc and still waiting. I see some peach fuzz which appears to maybe be filling in, but plenty of those shiny bald spots too. Robyn, I will hope for the same Christmas gift!

Yesterday was 11 weeks PFC for me and I actually took my wig off for the guys I work with, My boss was kind enough to say that I could go with out now (which I do outside of work) and that he liked the color, which is a strange mixture of whites/greys/browns and maybe I see some red finally coming back. Can't wait until I can go completely topless at work, maybe another month.

Congrats mccrimmon! For whatever reason, going topless at work is the last final frontier for me. I did post a pic of my new hair on my caringbridge site last night, and the response so far has been AWESOME. I am feeling very encouraged and it won't be much longer before I ditch the scarves for good. New Year's at the latest and I might bite the bullet sooner than that.

kks-rd, if my hair looked like yours I think I might just ditch everything for good. Your color is fantastic and your hair actually looks like you meant it. My color is naturally red but right now its a weird mixture of grey, white, brown and maybe I'm starting to see a little red, it's mostly muddy dull grey though. Happy news, I think I'm going to ask my hubby to trim around the ears, can't believe it might need to be done. Let's just hope he trims "around" them and not the actual ears. LOL

Hi everyone, I haven't posted on here in a long time. I want to update you on some things. Being a retired hairdresser since May "Hair" has always been important to me.
My story started Jan, 2008. For the next 3 years following...I lost my eyebrows and eyelashes every three month like clock work.WTH? Now the fall out has stopped and they are long again and holding on.
My 'stick straight' hair turned curly after chemo like the reast of yours. At the beggining of this week my hair was chin length and all the same length, and appeared pretty straight. The other night I decided enough of this...The AI I'm on is continually making my hair fall out slowly and I was tired of having it all over the bathroom and my shoulders, so I cut them short.
To my surprise, my hair turned into the most wonderful Big curl wave, just like after chemo. I am so delighted, it is easy to put it in place with my fingers and I have natural curl, after having straight hair all my life.Little did I know that it would continue after 4 years.
Just wanted to share this with all of you. Everything gets better, if you give it enough time. What a nice Christmas present to me. Artsee

Hey artsee - I am happy to hear that your hair has turned out so well.:)
A lot of you mention having curly hair after chemo - how long do the curls last? At a certain grow out length do the curls straighten out? Also regarding hair color - with the white/grey hair that seems to come in the beginning stages - how many inches until you noticed a different color come in? Or did the white / grey stay?
Has anyone noticed hair thinning - while growing out - due to Tamoxifen?0 -
Atsee great to hear you are enjoying your new hair. Mine is very similar to how it was pre BC but a lot thicker, which is great cause it was always baby fine. After a year PFC it is now jsut getting stuck in my collar. So looking forward to just letting it grow.
Smithy Like I said above my hair is the same as it was almost before chemo as far as curl goes. I did not get that white fuzz i hear about. Just my natural color which is brunette with a little grey. it looks really different than I was because I was hiliting it all very blonde for years. I have been on Tamoxifen since February and I don't see any thinning in my hair.

My hair is curly, but I had curly hair pre chemo, just kept it long and straight. So not sure if it is curlier now or not. Mine came in with alot of salt and pepper then started turning to brown with gray. I have been coloring my hair. As matter of fact I have color on right now lol!

Is it possible for hair to stop growing? I feel like I'm stalled ...

mamav I felt like that too, but when I look at photos I can def. tell I have not. Take photos every couple of weeks and compare you will see the difference.
My eyebrows are falling out like crazy now! Again!!!

ks - I will have to start doing that. I just took my first photos when I posted them last week. My eyebrows and lashes are doing that too - poop!

The advantage (or disadvantage) of coloring your hair is that you can see the growth - can't miss those roots showing up!!!
0 -
LuvRVing so true lol! In my case all I could see was gray roots lol! btw I love your color!
0 -
I did a semipermanent color at 4 months that gradually washed out so the roots were not so noticeable. I decided not to redo it because the grey kind of looks like hi lites.

Smithy...The curls seemed to leave mine when the length got past my chin. That's the length pulling it out...but as I mentioned 4 years later cutting them short....made them bounce up again. Great surprise. I always envied the ladies with natural hair and now I have it as well. Chemo is some powerful stuff. Mine came in naturally blond with lots of grey, but as soon as it got to be 1 1/2 inches...I colored them blonder like I always did. I'm impatient and it's the hairdresser in me.:)

artsee you are one of the lucky ones mine was straight before curly for about 8 months gone back to straight i loved the curls i to have always been jealous of curls. sharon

Carrol2 - I want to have hair caught in my collar! I'm glad to hear the Tamoxifen is playing nice and hasn't caused your hair to thin. My hair was fine...it does feel very coarse coming in. Of course that could be because I keep shaving it back down. I just keep seeing areas of little bald patches. How long until you noticed there weren't any bald patches? I love your hair!
Artsee - you are a hair dresser
If I keep shaving my head until I see an even shadow - will that mean that it will grow out in an even shape/pace at that point ? Right now I wear my hair at a zero. I will then try to keep it at a 1...when that looks good move it up to a 2... will this work? I love your blonde hair. Mine was blonde. At first the white fuzz was all I was shaving off - now my stubble seams to be turning quite dark. Since my length is stubble not the start of hair growth when can I dye it blonde? At a 3? I Googled "bald women" so I could get make up ideas...I noticed that there were a few European models with shaved heads. It was neat to see how they used accessories.:)
Is anyone else keeping it shaved until it is thicker? If so - how long have you been shaving? My "fuzz" started coming back during my chemo.:) I had my last chemo 10/11.0 -
Smithy, I have done the same thing because I keep getting these crazy fast growing sprouts and it looks really strange! So I will shave until I get a solid amount of hair coming in. I am at 7 weeks and it is starting to fill in, although still white:( I hope it doesn't stay white, I used to have dark hair. My hair has always been naturally wavy and the last time I went through this my hair came in too curly to deal with. I work in a salon as a haircolorist so I had it straightened by a coworker. It helped a little, but she actually straightened it too much, no body whatsoever. This time I don't think I will straighten it. Doesn't seem like it took this long to grow in last time, maybe because it is my second time around and I did more chemo this time. I need to take a picture. You can color it anytime, just rmember your hair might react a bit differently to color than it did before but should be ok. Just make sure your scalp is not too sensitive. I will color mine as soon as I have better coverage. But since it is white instead of dark I might go blonde, why not, right!? I have always wanted to be a blonde!
artsee-us hairdressers are impatient, aren't we? Did you work while you were bald? I did and it was kinda funny. I wore a wig, but everyone knew I was bald underneath! I was so jealous doing other peoples hair, but I would tell them how easy a wig is. I really miss my hair, as I am sure all of you do. I would feel somewhat normal if my hair was back.

I'm not shaving off a single millimeter!!! You know, under normal circumstances, hair grows in and falls out randomly over time. Even those with long hair have those short new hairs growing in because we all lose a few hairs every day. I had a bit of hair left at the nape of my neck after chemo, but now after 11 weeks PFC, it all just blends in and you can't really tell.
