Mary & Ginger, hope you also had good onc visits!

Geewhiz, welcome to the group. I still do push-ups on my knees but can knock out plenty so it is possible after double mx.

Went to bootcamp both Monday and Tuesday this week. Took a rest day today.

Thank you Scottie. I did it very gently and relied on my lower body more than my upper. I agree with Ruth, I'll bet you will find slow and steady will get you there!

Scottie, like your attitude of keeping at it - consistency- slow and sure- is key to working it back after surgery. Took me 9 months to get a up dog back and I cried tears of joy (back of the room, no one noticed). Those little wins for us can return so don't give up as Reader noted. Odie, you boot camp maven! Ruth have fun at the party for your cherished uncle. HeidiHill, thank you for the link and connection to this issue. My pt pointed out what I have is mild in that rom is beyond normal limits, so that nerve pain will go with time and I see her again next week Been doing massage on the right side and it's better yet nerve pain fluctuates as the day wears on into night. As we all know, recovery is not a straight line - lots of bumps, curves, forwards and backwards to contend with.

Off to pink pilates this morning. Our last class, then August summer break until September.

You are all so inspiring! M0mmyof2 I think laundry totally counts!

Had my first chemo on Monday and was able to go for a 3.2m jog that evening. Tuesday I couldn't do anything but Weds morning I did my same route again at a half-jog/half-walk pace. I've been feeling pretty terrible since last night, though, so I don't know if I'll be able to get out of bed today. Chemo is quite a roller coaster :(

Scottie - the reason for caution with doing push ups, downward dog, etc. is that doing too much too soon may trigger lymphedema. But, for many of us, it's possible to work back to doing more upper body exercises, but you need to take it very slowly and monitor constantly. If you have any signs that you're stressing the at risk arm, such as a feeling of heaviness, swelling, or other issues, STOP. If you haven't seen it, here's a thread about safely exercising after breast cancer surgery. I'll bump the thread for you - it's in this Exercise section and is called Guidelines on Exercise For Those With/At Risk for Lymphedema: https://community.breastcancer.org/forum/58/topic/801453.

Ruth - LOL on slipping in a baseball game while heading to a family event. I'm doing the same in a few weeks when we head to Wisconsin for a family event.

MissBee - you have it exactly right about chemo being a roller coaster. Like you, I usually felt pretty good for a few days after chemo - gotta love that steroid buzz. Then of course comes the crash, which is sort of shocking the first time it happens. Hang in there - for me it was kinda like getting flu every three weeks - I'd be flattened for a week, felt a bit better the next week, and by Week 3 I was pretty much back to normal.

I had a good visit with the MO on Tuesday, so no appointment for another year. Hooray! We talked about exercise, and I think I may have talked my onc into starting a C25K program. I showed her my app and she was really excited by it - she said she's been thinking about starting a running program, but had no idea how to begin, and loved the idea of having the app guide her. I told her I wanted to hear that she'd run a 5K when I came back next year! I went to an all-day retirement seminar at work yesterday - it was wonderful. They brought in all kinds of speakers to review pension/deferred comp plans, Social Security, Medicare, financial planning, and estate planning, etc. I really have a much better understanding of those things, and they gave us a lot of tools we can use to begin some serious retirement planning. Lots and lots to think about!

Week 2, Day 3 of the squats program this morning.

Hello All! I am sitting in the passengers seat watching Minnesota countryside roll by. Mary, congratulations on your appointment and whew! Always good to have that crossed off the list. Here is a chemo/steroids story: a number of years ago now, two friends were both doing chemo at the same time. Since the infusion center was 100 miles away, the husband of one drove both of them over. After their appointments, the ladies decided that they needed to go shopping. The DH is still shaking his head, "You've never been shopping until you've been shopping with two women on steroids!"

LilacBlue and NatsFan. . .thanks for the tips. I'm getting a PT referral this time round I definitely want to go slow but steady. I'm looking at a 23 mile hike as well as a 425 step climb to the top of an awesome waterfall. I hope to reach those goals by winter, but there are many options in between what I can hit as goals.

My MO appt went fine; will go back in 6 months after my bone density test. We had a good time walking around and eating in Boston after. It was about 90 degrees but there was a breeze.

Good job, Mary, on recruiting another Couch to 5 K participant.

I have been doing lots of squats and lunges in my PT sessions and exercises and I am starting to get stronger! Not sure I will be ready for my Triathalon in 3 weeks but we'll see...

Edited to add that I was told the compression from the water when swimming can be good for Lymphadema.

Does BRAIN exercise count??? Passed the first hurdle of my new consulting gig.

Otherwise, doing the basics of walking 2+ miles per day plus weights/crunches. I know from my new phone that one hour of some sort of activity plus 6000 steps of walking. Not counting the stuff I do when not carrying my smartphone.

Figured that I can get up super early and take the 6:10a ferry over to the 70 mile cycling event I have planned for Saturday. So can do a full day tomorrow. Hoping to snag some Dungeness Crab for dinner prior to my return.

    My weights and dinner await.

Promise pix of the sea plus lavender fields. On to my weights. - Claire

Odie - The squat app is called From 0 to 100 squats in 10 weeks, by Fitness 22. My C25K app I've been doing is by them as well. They have a bunch of running, strength and other fitness apps - stuff like From 0 to 200 Situps in 10 Weeks, etc.

Ruth - when's your Twins game?

Finished the C25K app this morning! It really was a great way to work back into running. It was slow but steady, and it kept me from doing too much too soon and getting injured. I didn't have any joint or other twinges or aches through the whole process. Now that I can run a 5K without stopping again, I need to work to regain a bit on speed - I'm definitely a tortoise and not a hare!

Wow ladies, you are all inspirations and provide hope that my new norm will be one with even better physical fitness than before my bad back and BC. Has anyone worked up to 5k jog with a partially degenerated disk and BMx?

All the walking and hiking before EX did wonders for my L4/L5 disk. I should ask for an updated MRI to see if it really has improved. I was not able to jog much but that was mostly nerve pain from TEs. I wonder if I can take on the C25K in a couple of months.

Scottie - the description of your back is very similar to mine. I did work up to a 5k (gentle) jog but my back hurt further so I went back to sprint walking. I don't want anymore back issues! This does not mean you will hurt too. Like I did, You could slowly work up to it and see how it goes. You can always reduce the strength if needed. I hope you don't need it. Good, luck!

    Badger and Clare, lovely photos!

Today's exercise was an hour on of resistance training at the gym. Tonight I am doing 90 minutes of yoga outside under the FM (weather permitting, been rainy this week!)

Thanks Nisavilla. . .I was undergoing PT for back when BC intervened. I'm going to get new PT referral from PS next week and find someone who can work with both my lumbar disk issue and my BMx/recon. Then I'll work up from there.

I agree, you are all such inspirations! I am 2 weeks PFT and still recovering. Walking some, but get so tired and my legs are still weak. I plan to get back into exercise slowly, but surely!

5k run plus swim tonight. Thermometer read 94F when I passed it on the way out to the swimming spot. 88F on the way back. So water was most welcome. Cooling down now so dinner should be pleasant.

Making salmon. Will have the round lemon cucumber as a salad tonight. Does anyone else have trouble sorting the squashes from the cucumbers?

Tour de Lavender is along the coast so should be ~80F, not mid 90s. Can't wait. - Claire

Took a long walk with my SIL this morning, explored the very well recreated Fort Snelling this afternoon and went to the Twins game tonight. 24,000 steps and 48 flights of stairs according to the Fitbit. The Twins played rotten but we very much enjoyed the ballpark food before and during the game and the fireworks afterwards. image

Oh Ruth that looksYum! Very tempting indeed. Nice to read you are having such a happy summer! I have not been reading the forum as often but often remembering the BC gang that came out to West Coast. Hope everyone is having a summer like Ruth's ๐Ÿ˜ƒ. My exercising is now almost daily. My sedentary profession is causing me some troubles. If anyone knows of a good trick for fluid retention in the legs, please share. I do not report daily to the thread because my exercise is the same routine every day. Need to do something to spice it up! My love to all. Nisa

Thanks for the welcome and pushup advice guys!

I will just keep plodding along. RuthBru...YUMM!!!!!!

And Ginger, PLEASE post tri pics!! That is a major goal for me too!! Good luck!! I have been jogging 3 miles then hopping into the pool for about 8 laps (400m). I googled that Total Immersion swimming - it really helps.

I took today off. I might try to bump the distance up a bit tomorrow to 4 miles. I will probably have to walk a bit of it, but I think I am ready!!

Yesterday I went to the mall and walked. I couldn't work myself up to walking in the heat and humidity. This morning I got up and walked my dog 20minutes. It was kind of pleasant so then I went to the lake and walked 40. I came home and did some weeding for thirty minutes. By that time I was dripping wet. Showered and went out to brunch and Of course was starving and ordered cheese grits, two eggs, biscuit and strawberry orange juice. I think I need a daily accountability eating thread too.

Welcome my sunshine oh I remember post chemo I couldn't walk my shortest 12 minute route and couldn't do one flight of stairs without stopping. But you'll get there. Do what you can and then a little more.

Nisa my exercise is mostly the same too. I still report in for the "peer pressure".

    Welcome gee whiz too!

Ruth - You all look great and not tired at all. Not sure the guys wanted to be In the cheesy photo lol. I want cheese! I want cheese! I could forever survive on bread and cheese. Your friend's hair made me SO nostalgic for my hair before chemo. I now have a love-hate relationship with my chemo curls. Feel I wear a spaghetti plate on my head yet love it because it means a whole year of no wig! Enjoy WI ๐Ÿ˜€
