Breast reconstruction with implants

Hello, i just had my exchange surgery after expanders post DMX. I had expanders filled to 550 cc. I learned today that they only were able to put in 415 cc implants due to the fact they could not get the pocket to close when a larger implant was put in. Did anyone have this experience? Not sure if this leaves me options for larger size reconstruction in the future.

@bnmiche - Welcome to Breastcancer.org, and thank you for sharing what you’re going through.

What you’re describing can happen. Sometimes the tissue can’t safely accommodate a larger implant at the time of exchange, even if expanders were filled more.

Others here have had similar situations, so hopefully they’ll share what options they had later on. In the meantime, this article may be helpful:

Hello, I am going through delayed reconstruction post radiation. I had my expanders placed March 2nd, but I have a part of my incision on the affected side not healing well and still has a large, dark scab. I have only had one syringe of fluid put into my expander bc of this. I may be having surgery soon to repair this issue. I am not happy about this and now I kinda regret even starting this bc I still have my one natural breast and I am 60 years old. Tks for listening, Lisa R
