camillegal, your funny pictures make me laugh! I'm with that panda today. Not much sleep after 4am so I'm bleary eyed and drinking extra coffee.

Goldie, somehow, someone at your mother's facility has to let your mom or her POA sign a paper that the bed rails can be used. Two bad falls...so sorry for her.

NM, when the time comes for me to be in the nursing home, I want to move to yours! I know you will look after the patients, and make sure the rest of the staff does too. I won't tell you the horror stories of the first facility my late father was in, but it was truly awful. Worse was no responsiveness from the nursing admins. It has one "star" from medicare, but that's probably only because no stars wasn't an option. Only two other facilities in that whole county and they are not much better. The "best" one has over a year's wait list. As for my dad, my sister moved him to a facility in her town, hundreds of miles from me. He was there for several months and it was better. He died there, after a few days on official hospice care. I didn't get to see him for the last year of his life, but I knew he was warm, dry, fed, and safe in that last facility.

    Happy Hump Day!

When my mother was in a class B home in Conroe, Texas she had bed rails. Prior to that, she was in a rehab hospital where she also had bed rails. She was incapable of any mobility so maybe that was why. I was appalled at the low level of care she received at the rehab hospital and eventually had them cited for gross negligence.

Raining here again. These grey days get old fast. Still drinking water and staying close to a bathroom. Incredible pic of the snow tornado. I have never seen one of those. Going to get some housework done today and start a new book. I do enjoy checking in here every morning. The humor and hopefulness is infectious!

Wow, Jazzy--a snownado! Never seen one, but a regular twister is scary enough.

Happy birthday, Kim--and happy extended birthday, Ilona!

Well, ladies, I'm about to enter my second adolescence: today I saw the orthodontist. To my relief, he says the upper incisors aren't as loose as I'd feared, that I won't need full braces, and he can straighten the upper incisors with just Invisaligns (new ones every other week for 6 mos., and then a clear night retainer for the rest of my life). Prolia shouldn't cause a problem.

What does that have to do with drinking? Well, in the waiting room is a giant looseleaf with the cover title "Tales of Lost Retainers." I have my own tale, circa 1983. I had my first adult orthodontia from 1979-83 (full braces, including headgear to start and then rubber bands, brackets & wires). Unlike my first round (age 12-20), this time it worked, despite my deciding against the recommended upper-jaw surgery because my medical insurance refused to cover it (or any complications).

So in 1983 I was already wearing a retainer when Bob, our BFFs (Bob & Kathy) and I set out for a driving trip to Nova Scotia. Our BFFs & I were in a band, and we brought a copy of our demo for Kathy's hometown pub to play. She's Canadian, and the "Canadian content" law (requiring all media & venues to have at least 25% of their entertainment material written or performed by Canadians) had recently been rolled out. She wrote and sang lead on the first track, so it seemed the bar's sound system was playing it every third or fourth song. Every time it was played, a round of Alexander Keith's IPA magically appeared before us. I hadn't realized Canadian beers were much stronger than anything sold in U.S pubs at the time, so as a good guest I dutifully drank up.

I was ready to go back to home base (Kathy's mom's house) when a friend invited us to a party at his home. "Will there be coffee?" I asked hopefully, and was assured indeed it would be so. When we got there, though, I was handed a glass of cheap champagne...spiked with Jack Daniel's. Well, what goes in must come out eventually, and so it did in several installments along the way home. Got upstairs, out of my clothes & contacts, and into bed--where with the help of a Gravol (Dramamine) and peppermint tea I slept for 20 hours. Alas, my retainer was MIA. I wonder to this day if somewhere in the Bay of Fundy there's a lobster sporting a retainer...

Good Morning, Loungettes!Happy Thirsty Thursday! Waking up to 3.8 inches of new snow, yeah!Had dinner at Olive Garden with Mom and a friend of ours, was very nice and very fun. Brought half my Chicken Alfredoand most of the dessert home, forgot to put it in the fridge right away, so guess who got a BIG treat while I was changing clothes?Yup, miss Sadie. Helped herself, took the bag right off the counter, took out the boxes, opened them up and scarfed them down. She was VERY affectionate cuddling in bed last night, too.

Cammy--I am having a great time with the new job. I've gotten started cleaning out and rearranging the office, getting a better handle on what needs to be done, starting to getsome ideas to work on, beginning to see how things work. Got my work laptop yesterday, got on e-mail, generally getting settled in. I am having so much fun! Praying your sister recovers quickly and is pain free very soon!

Muddling--I'm so sorry your Dad had to go through such an experience at the first nursing home. I'm glad he was in a better place at the end. My Nursing Home is very dedicated to high quality care for everyone--this is THEIR HOME, we are the guests, we work for the residents is the philosophy. Making sure that happens is a big part of my new job, but making sure staff are educated and have the support and information they need to give excellent care.

Librarian--Bed rails were redefined as Restraint Devices for residents of Long Term Care, but not for Hospitals or Skilled Rehab facilities. Essentially, bed rails can't be used in Long Term Care anymore, despite the fact that they would be really helpful for some residents. Medicare is more afraid of one person being "restrained" with them inappropriately than a dozen falling out of bed.Of course, the higher the fall rate the less the nursing home will get paid when the payment structure changes this fall.

    Thank you, Illi!

    Jazzy--still a remarkable pic!And Thanks!

Chi--thank you! The lost retainer story is hilarious! I now have this mental pic of a lobster wearing a retainer!

    Mornin' ladies

Goofus that was nice poopin in and wishing Illi a HD. Hope u come back and visit sometime.

LOL Sandy, boy it sounds like ur teeth gave u quite a good time along the way. U actually asked for coffee, hahaha and even thought u might get it. Oh the naivete of young people. Especially with tough beer .

Lori Did u have to talk with ur brother about this. He must feel terrible too. I know this does happen in so many homes but it's awful and never should.

Jazzy if it wasn't for u I would never think NM had snow. ever...but it does make for pretty pics.

JC I seem to lean towards how I feel with my pics. But the happy energetic ones are opposite from how I feel, I just pretend.

And did I miss everyones BD, or I hope I membered. Cuz I used to. Jeez I'm sorry except Illi does have a tendency to celebrate for a whole month.

Ugh I'm still going round and round about my visa gift card. I have it yet someone else used all the numbers and spent it all. 250.00 ALL OF IT at cubs food somewhere. Now I have to wait like 2 more months till they figure it out. It's not like I lost it, somehow someone had the same numbers or something, but I phyisically own it , in my hand. WFT. Shouldn't they send me a new one and then figure it out. Jeez I showed them all the proof that I had and it was bought at the Walgreens store around my house plus filling out all the forms, I didn't lose it and I originally opened it. So I don't get why I have all the penalty of this disaster.

Another thing, this is most important Leslie's Onc told her she really didn't have any reason to see her again. What's that all about. She's Stage III with so many complications and she's still on the after pill. I kept on going even when I moved here. I don't get it. She said if u have a problem see ur PC. Ever since Leslie got this big hole in her the Drs. are blaming each other and don't want much to do with this. Her wound specialist sees her every week. And her 3x a week nurse who cleaned out the hole had to stop cuz they started her on PT . Now she has a lump so big and purple where the hole is and they said it's the nodes moving cuz of PT and hurting her more. I don't get any of this. She's being treated like a pariah. Something seems so wrong here.

Wow I'm filled with puzzles this morning, no wonder why I can't sleep just to much is going on here and I pray for my cousin all the time, but now I pray differently she's in a lot of pain. And I so miss her already even tho she's with us, she really isn't anymore.

    On those happy notes ♪♪♪

NM, I assume your dinner at Olive Garden was for your birthday. A day late, but Happy Birthday my friend. What did you have? Ahh, Chicken Alfredo, that's what I always get. And so nice of you to share with Sadie!!!!

Cami, when you had the "candy", you slept cuz you were high! And yes, we are so close. I just could never leave and absolutley hate when we do have gals leave. You have a lot going on in your life, so you have every reason to feel sad. I can't believe Leslie's onc says she doesn't have to come back anymore. In the beginning I was stage II and saw onc every 3 months for a couple of years, then on to 6 months. When I hit my 5 year, onc said I was good for a year. I said no no no, I want to stay on 6 months. I think she should shop or a new onc. So so sorry your cousin is in so much pain. I love you very much and wish I could give you a real hug, and Les too.

Mud, there is no POA for my mom. She went into the nursing home with lots of debts. She would order stuff out of catalogs and then not pay for it. So no one wants to incur her debts, probably around $5000.00! I think we all would want NM to take care of us, if need be!

JCS, sorry you had to deal with the same with your mom. Why are nursing homes so bad? Hoping you are hydrated enough to get your cocktail.

    Jazzy, cute Snoopy pic.

Sandy, quite the story. And it took 20 hours to get that out of your system! LOL at the lobster sporting a retainer.

Spent all day in town yesterday, shopping for this big snow we are supposed to get. Jazzy, are you in line for it? Also spent a couple of hours in a lawyers office to redo our trust. Only to learn that the lawyer who did the first one, basically gave us an empty one. Anyways, things continue with my mom. Fall number 3. They removed the air mattress and she now has one that has like raised edges, don't know how else to explain it. My brother was there yesterday, more pictures and here is what he texted me.

I'm so irritated right now. WAiting for the administrator to come talk to us. Mom is laying here in bed with blood stains. No sheets. Just the comforter I brought and laid over her and blood and garbage on the floor. Not to mention the bathroom is a disaster with more blood stain towns on the counter. Her tray is a sticky gross mess.
So just had a conversation with the Administrator and Kenny (my brothers partner) gave him an earful. Shwed him the disgusting conditions of the room and mom's injuries. He was sympathetic to our concerns and assured us this is not the standards they themselves to and will make sure they are corrected immediatley.
She has eaten her last 3 meals that I understand and her blood sugar got down to 30 last night.

Her left arm looks better, compared to previous pic.

Now her right arm has been hurt.

    image

Blood on the towel in bathroom

    image

More blood on the floor next to her bed and looks like a bloody alcohol wipe also.

    image

Messy bathroom. Not that she uses it, but her room mate does.

    image

This just tears me up to see my mom being treated this way and me 2000 miles away. Sorry for all of the gross pictures, I will come back and delete them in a few days.

Hi friends- just a quick message. Well, my MO's office closed during the storm and now my apt has been cancelled again! They called me in early Jan to reschedule the one I had scheduled in January for a long time, but of course, it pushes out a whole month. I see the MO once a year now, get the Prolia shot 2X a year and now am going to be way off cycle with the shot. No call back to reschedule. You want to see me once a year to check on how I am doing? Then get it together over there people. Beyond that, then they sent me a bill for my office visit with them for last year which was like $182? My guess is they sent in the claim way too late and the insurance company won't pay. But not my problem. I am disputing it. I am pissed at them right now.

Cami- that does NOT sound right about Leslie. You don't discharge a patient who has gone through all that treatment and then not do follow ups with them. Plenty of cancer cases are complicated because PEOPLE are complicated. Maybe Leslie needs a new MO not affiliated with the place she has been going. I think a few more things can be done here too, but that would be the most important thing right now. You live in Chicago so my thought is you have more options for healthcare.

Glad you all liked the snownado. Better than a sharknado, right?

I heard an update on that bid I sent in a couple weeks ago for the cool new work. They are still reviewing the information for decisions. I am glad it is running late as I will have better bandwidth in a few weeks when my one big project is done. I have a couple new projects for this same place, but can more easily add this other one. My guess is if they are interested, there may be a meeting before to meet face to face. Although at my current gig, I only did phone interviews and never met anyone in person before they offered me the work.

We have another storm coming tomorrow. But day light savings now 2 weeks away as well as spring now a month away. I hear the storms are all across the country. Flooding down in the southern states too. Be safe my people.

Hey Gang! Happy Friday Eve! Been busy! So, today was 8 of 12! WOO HOO!!

Although, I must be starting menopause! Hot flashes from HELL at night. Not slepping well. Nurse at chemo said I could take OTC meds as long as no estrogen and hormones in it! NO period since Jan but that dsn be chemo related. The hot flashes have just started. Anyone got any suggestions?

Goldie-Sorry to hear about your friend🙏! 4 tx to go!!

Jazzy-All The nurses at chemo and PS loved their cupcakes! Had the whipped icing on it😳!

Native-darn numbers back and forth. This week they were back down, but only the RBC, HGB, the other HCT..WTH? Guess the stuff for smoothies will turn into salads! Guess I’ll do more research. But, my WBC is rocking! Starting on liquid “Dannon Brand” in the yogurt section. Had a flipping banana otw the chemo, shot Glucose up from hell! Won’t do that no more. Flat tire is getting on out there. Done another 60cc last week, feel lots of pressure this time, had to hit the recliner for several nights! Guess the bigger the tire gets, the more pressure I will feel! Oh yes they give me steroids, ready to roll on those things! The day after chemo I could paint the house😘

We drastically cut back on the adult beverages, during the week of course😳! But, we still wet our whistles!

Hair-shedding like a tree in the fall😳 But still there!

Good Morning, Loungettes!Happy TGIF day! I've got to admit that I am some tired and dragging my butt outta bed this ayem. I'm not used to be up and moving all day like this, but it's good for me and I'm sure I'll adapt over time. Things are going well at work, I'm getting settled in and have gotten my first class set up for March 6th. Got my office rearranged and worked with IT to get the printer and my laptop talking. I'm getting a good idea of what the new boss wants from me and I think we are going to work together really well. All in all, I am very tired, but very happy! And God love Silly Sadie who patiently listens to me babbling for hours after I get home from work!

    Strock--Welcome to the HTL!

Cammy--Crazy stuff with the gift card. I'm with you, the company should send you a new card and figure out what happened on their own time. Just nuts. Poor Leslie, she really is getting the run around, isn't she? I wish there was some way to make this all go away for her. Can she call her insurance company and ask for a case manager to help her? I'm sure you miss your cousin dreadfully, and will miss her even more as time goes by. Hugs.

Goldie--Yes, the Olive Garden dinner was for my birthday. I love their Chicken Alfredo and get it every time, even though I really should try other things, too, but there it is! You have every right to be irritated, or even upset with the nursing home. Does your Mom have bedsores on her back or bottom? Taking away the air mattress increases the risk of bedsores; you or your brother or his partner should be asking what is being done to prevent bedsores. The correct answer would be that your Mom is being checked and repositioned every 2 hours, day and night. The nursing home should also have contacted one of you BEFORE changing the mattress. I'm glad they caught the low blood sugar. There should not be any blood or bloody items left lying around like that. And her oxygen tubing should not be touching the floor, that is a huge infection risk. It would be a good idea for your brother or Kenny to take pics of your Mom and her surroundings every time they visit, to keep a running documentation of the situation. And let the staff find out you are taking pics, nothing like a family "collecting evidence" to motivate staff to do better!

Jazzy--Good update news! Good for you for disputing the charges. Like you say, they need to get their act together. Hard to believe spring is so close!

Love the emotional support bar cart!!!!

Gig--Hot flashes are not fun. When I was having treatment induced hot flashes I took gabapentin (Neurontin) at bedtime to control the overnight flashes so I could sleep. And I also needed a fan on all the time, even when the bedroom was quite cold in the winter. Needed to feel the air moving. Did you get Neulasta to boost your WBC numbers? That diverts the bone marrow into making more white cells and fewer red cells and platelets, so the number see-saw isn't unusual. I can imagine pumping up the flat tire is causing some pressure. OUCH!

Janky--glad you are still with us!Pneumonia can be a real tail-kicker, so keep taking care of yourself!

    DOTD:

    Friday Freeze

    Ingredients

Blend all ingredents in blender at highest speed. Consistancy of the mix should be "semi - thick:" not so thick that a spoon would stand by itself in the mix, but not as thin as juice. If the mix is too thin, add sherbet, if too thick , add equal amount of juice and alcohol. Pour into glass and place in freezer for 15 minutes.

Best served in a White Wine Glass.

Janky, you are still struggling with that pneumonia? Dang! You need to get better to go and enjoy FL.

NM, I too always get the same thing and think the same thing, I should try something else, but I don't! Things sound like they are going smoothly at work. They did tell us when they changed my moms mattress. Bed sores are at the top of her bum, almost to tail bone. They ARE supposed to move her every 2 hours, do they? I have no clue. That wedge you see in the wheel chair is supposed to be behind her back, to keep her on her side. My brother does take pictures. I did not know that the o2 tubing should not be on the floor.

    Cami, you crabby...naaaaaaah!

Well the sun shined all day yesterday and it started to snow about the time we went to bed. Woke up this morning to a foot (at least) of snow! Thought it was going to skip right by us....NOT. But temps rising to the 60's next weekend and I think we will be able to make it to Moab for the weekend.

Hi friends- well my MO apt got rescheduled to next Friday, 3/1 late in the day so that works out okay. Prolia shot before the weekend and in the event I have any aches from it. I have nothing planned for that weekend and will lay low to be sure I am okay. I am less crabby now, but still am cranky about some things at work. The management has been out for a few days and must say that has been kinda nice......

I went to a prof org event last night around a telemedicine program here in New Mex that is helping to keep patients in the rural hospitals to get care without LifeStar helicoptering them to ABQ. Better for everyone and so glad to see the University trauma center here is doing this. But the guy that did the talk did about five slides where he talked about every degree and job experience he had ever had (and whether the job was fun or not?) Good lord. I have done plenty of presentations in my day and a good bio is always good to share on your background before you get in to your stuff but this guy spent 30 min of the hour just talking about himself. I looked at the eyes glazing over in the room during that time. PhD's love talking about themselves, so I was reminded. I got to catch up with a colleague I really like and whom I have not seen in awhile so that was good.

Goldie- I heard that Flagstaff got 2 feet of snow with the storm coming our way. They said we were going to be getting snow starting at 2 p.m. today. They said it will be a dumper! I hope your mom is doing better.

Cami- spa time saves me so much of the time. I think you need a spa trip! My next one is in March before my birthday for a facial. It is part of my "wellness plan".

NM- getting back in to a regular groove with a FT job will take awhile. Be patient with yourself and probably good to get some rest in the evenings. I am quite honestly very tired every night after work. I am looking forward to day light saving soon so that I can get out after work for a walk before dark. It has been really cold here to do much walking outside this winter. I need more exercise. I am sure you and Sadie will find your groove.

Janky- so sorry to hear the pneumonia has been pulling you down. I hope you feel better before flying. Take some Vitamin C before you go to boost your immune system.

Well ladies, it's TGIF and hoping you all have a good start to this last weekend of February. It is March already this coming week! EEEK.

Happy Friday! I was able to get my full chemo infusion this morning. The creatinine count was down to only 1.2 even with all the water. I will celebrate with some wine tonight after my nap. The snow this year has been pretty crazy. Is it El Niño? We are supposed to have thunderstorms tonight and tomorrow. Monday might be a nice day.

I cannot imagine working and doing chemo. I worked with the public and on good days it was hard not to yell back at them when they criticized my staff. Not to mention just the regular time sensitive stuff you always have to do. My hat is off to you ladies. I never used to nap, but can do it now in the blink of an eye. Plus, the idea of having to look good every day would wear me out now. Cancer has put a damper on retirement for now, but not forever!

Lori, it's time you contacted a nursing home plaintiffs' lawyer in your area. (They advertise all the time around here). I've taken several nursing home liability CLE courses and can tell you that your mom's situation is definitely a lawsuit that should already have been filed (not just "waiting to happen"). Bedsores are definitely evidence of negligence, especially if they're Grade 2 or worse.

Cami, there have been gift card scams all over the place. The most common is to buy a card at the checkout counter, only to find it's been used already. Thieves simply copy down the numbers, expiration date and CVV code and put the card back on the display rack. (We were given a whole bunch of those and found out they were worthless only when we tried to use them--and the director of the referral source--a home care company--who gave them to us ended up getting busted and losing his medical license for tax and Medicare fraud). And you have no recourse. To prevent this happening to you again, buy only cards that have been locked behind the counter. And make sure before paying for them, check to see they're still valid in the full amt. listed. (Or have whoever gifts one to you to do that before giving it to you). Costco manages to avoid this by making you take a large cardboard "dummy" card to the register, pay for it, and exchange it for the actual gift card at Customer Service (which keeps them in a locked cage).

As to (your)Leslie, the MO sounds like one she needs to drop like a hot potato. Does she have a Nurse Navigator assigned to her case? If so, the NN should switch her to a different MO. I'm 3-1/2 yrs post-op, and I still see my MO every 6 mos. so long as I still get Prolia shots. (Maybe she needs to switch to a different health system's cancer center--no shortage of those in Chicagoland).

Kim, Sadie is one smart pooch--and a foodie, to boot!

Janice, just the thought of kicking back in warmer climes next week should help clear up your pneumonia. Hope your ears & sinuses are OK so the takeoffs & landings don't give you earaches. Bring sucking candies & chewing gum just in case.

We've been spared snow for the past few days--whatever fell melted in the rain (though the untreated streets do ice up in spots at night). DOTD last night was a brut rosé crémant de Loire at Dusek's Beer & Board, an actual Michelin-starred (not just "Bib Gourmand"-listed) restaurant in Pilsen on the near S. Side. Really reasonable, too, with huge portions. Sadly, couldn't pack leftovers, as right after dinner we went next door & upstairs to adjacent Thalia Hall to see Joe Jackson in concert and we didn't think we could bring food into the theater (although we could take our drinks with us). Of course, we saw folks tucking plastic bags with food boxes beneath their seats. Oh, well--at least I finished half my food (with a little help from Gordy, who treated me to the show as a belated birthday present).

Jackson was amazing--Jazzy, you'd appreciate his intricate melodies and arrangements. He left out a bunch of my favorite songs of his--but he had 40 years' worth of hits to play and only 2 hrs. to do so. (This tour was the first time he was able to do "Steppin' Out" from Night & Day live--he played all the instruments on the album and it wasn't till now that he & his 3 bandmates could reproduce it with keyboards, glockenspiel & drum machine). Most of his remaining US tour dates are sold out, but if he's playing anywhere near your neck of New Mexico, maybe you can score a last-minute or resale ticket (BTW, Gordy now works in e-commerce & online customer service for Vivid Seats. Just sayin'...).

JCS - I am not sure of your timeline, I retired as Librarian at our Hight School and just over a year later dx with stage 2 cancer - not the retirement I had planned! Bascally one year later stage 4, bone mets...

Chi - thanks for the travel tips, I had sinus/earache issues on my last flight, so really want to prevent that! I so enjoy your descriptions of DOTD, I almost taste them :)

Heading to bed early (yet again!) Cheers!

    Mornin' Ladies,

Lori we're talking about ur snow here, it's crazy and of course Jazzy too. It shouldn't be going on now. And of course Sandy is right make sure ur brother takes lots of pics. too. This is shameful.

Jazy it seems like u have bunches of spas there. U always have one to go to.

Janky I know this takes longer than u'd think, cuz I thought well it's gone soooo. but the Docs told me it was going to e a while til I actually felt better and they were right. That's why I said just relax and take whatever helps u.

Sandy Leslie wants to get a whole new team except for her wound Dr. shes trying to get it all together. She's now with Dupage I'm with Northwestern can she just call and ask for new app't with Northwestern, we never had to change Ds. before. Oh and when Dan gave me the gift card, I checked it right away and opened that zip closing and it said 250.00 balance. But when I went to use it the next day that's when it was used and all of the money at one store and it just at Costco about 2 hrs. before I was going to use it. It didn't seem like it was tampered with at all, I always make sure, If it was used before I bought it, it would make more sense. I even thought that this might have been a mistake and the numbers were duplicated where they produce them, but on the same day I was going to use it puzles me, like they knew it was purchased and yet they waited 12 hr. to use it Am I making sense??? IDK I just think after proving that it was purchased they should do this on their own and now let me wait a couple of months, chances are they'll never figure it out.

Well Kim 1 week down, U must be tired ust from new things, if nothing else. I hope u and Sadie a good quiet weekend and I know already ur doing a great job. So I have no thoughts of that. I wish u could be cloned.

I'm possed to get my hair dyed today <finally> depending on weather. Jodie is coming, Leslie can't even do that cuz of her arm hole.

    LUBS U ALL
