    Our concern must be to live while we’re alive--to release our inner selves from the spiritual death that comes with living behind a façade designed to conform to external definitions of who and what we are.

    Joan...add my well wishes for a speedy recovery.  I have always had to have antibiotic therapy for dental work since I had a case of rheumatic fever as a child.  The last time I had a tooth pulled......they just gave me a heavy done about a half hour before the extraction.

    I think the dentist said that germs ( a little toxic I suppose ) are released when dental work is done.....and apparently in your case ( likely everyone's ) they will travel to whatever area is weakest and take up residence.

    I just hope you are back on your feet quickly ( if you have anything to say about it you will be ) and are able to get back on track.  Thinking about you and wishing you VERY well, VERY quickly.

    Peace and love

    Joan - so sorry to hear about this new issue (I would never have guessed that a dentist appt could cause this much concern). If I can get a ride over to the hospital I will come visit (assuming you are at GSH).

    Things are improving very slowly.  Can't believe that I am sitting around my cramped little hospital room just to get an IV at midnight.  Seems like they should have a work release program?  My DD works in healthcare and is sure that I was admitted because the ER at GSH discovered that I had good health insurance.  Where she works in Seattle, she said I never would have been admitted but put on the home IV program like I've had before.  Wonderful!  At least I got a reluctant okay from the hospital to go outside for a walk today and some real Vitamin D.  Whooo hooo!  My DH is going to enjoy that today when he shows up.

    Dental procedures can cause cellulitis when you are prone to it, especially with LE.  The hygienist is scraping dirt off your teeth and drawing a little blood at the same time.  Guess it created a perfect little storm for me the other day.  My ONC stopped by last night and says he will be happy to order prophylactic antibiotics for me to use before I go back to the dentist again.

    There are two very good LE therapists here and I have worked with both of them over the past couple years.  The hospital let them know that I am here and they will follow up with me after I leave the hospital and the cellulitis has cleared to see if I need any treatment.

    Everyone enjoy this beautiful day... cannot wait to get out there.

    Have you heard about the Supreme Court ruling?  kathindc posted on another forum and I'm just passing it along...,

    Thought you might like to know how the Supreme Court ruled on Myriad.  Received an e-mail from Breast Cancer Action with the news.  Here is what they sent:

    "The Supreme Court has outlawed human gene patents.

    Corporations can no longer own our genes.

    Thank you for standing with us against corporate control of our health.

    Today, the Supreme Court ruled in our favor to strike downMyriad Genetics’ patents on the human “breast cancer” genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2—and not just Myriad’s patents, but patents on all  human genes. This is a tremendous win for women’s health – and for all our health!

    What does today’s victory mean for women who have, or might have, an inherited risk of breast cancer?

    • More women will have access to potentially life-saving information about their hereditary risk of breast and other cancers;
    • New, better, and cheaper genetic tests will become available;
    • Women considering their options can get second opinions;
    • Myriad’s monopoly is broken and other labs can conduct testing, perform vital research, and develop treatments using the human BRCA1&2 genes

    What does today’s victory mean for public health?

    • Corporations can no longer own human genes!
    • No single company can monopolize all research, testing, and treatment for diseases and disorders with a genetic link.

    Since our founding, we’ve worked fearlessly to put patients before corporate profits. We are the only breast cancer organization that is a plaintiff in this case. We proudly joined researchers, genetic counselors, and individual patients in this landmark lawsuit, represented by the ACLU, because we couldn’t sit idly by while Myriad’s monopoly harmed women.

    Your support made this victory possible. Thank you for standing with us.

    We can challenge corporate power and put people before profits because we’re not beholden to biotech or pharma funding – our funding, and our power to challenge the status quo, comes from you. We’re so proud to have supporters like you who continue to make wins for women’s health a reality."

    Supreme Court did the right thing! Thanks for the posting, C-squared. I saw a national news segment on TV tonight about it too.

    Not much improvement in my cellulitis so they brought an Infectious Diseases doctor in on it today. She was amazing. Doing more blood cultures and added in another antibiotic tonight. I am already noticing a change for the better. Yeah. Guess I am stuck here until at least Saturday and more likely Sunday. C- Squared you are welcome to drop by anytime. They let me go out and walk around the lake so I am getting some exercise.

    Thanks for everyone's concern and well wishes. Hope everyone else is having a productive week.

    What worries me about the high court ruling is that companies might not spend money researching genes anymore because there's not money in it for them. I hope I'm wrong about that. I guess the compromise would be to let them have the patent for a certain amount of time, but shorter than usual to recoup some profit. This is actually how patents work for drug companies. Once the patent goes out the generic is available.

    Morning, ladies. I should be on my way out of here later this morning. We were shooting for 9AM, but has you might expect... A couple delays. My final IV infusion showed up late from the pharmacy. Then my IV site crapped out and started leaking so now I need another IV site....big ouch... and get a new IV bag. They know that I have a hair appointment at 1PM so they are under the gun now!

    The blood cultures showed this to be strep rather than staph, so was good to get the infectious disease doctor in on it and get the antibiotic changed. Well, we all know where strep is commonly found...in the mouth and throat. So, yes, I blame the dental cleaning for 4 days in the hospital. Lesson learned!

    Can't wait to get this show on the road this morning. Bring on the IV...and breakfast. Thanks again for your well wishes and support. Hope everyone else is having a productive day.

    What good news this a.m.  Well, the problem parts not so much.  Almost glad it is strep which I think is generally easier to deal with most of the time and shorter duration.  Yay for you and going home.  A good Saturday all way around.

    Peace and love

    Joan, I am so sorry.  I do not check the thread on a  regular basis and so I stepped in just to see what was up and low and behold I read that my Words with Friends buddy is in  the hospital.  I am glad you are better.  I do not understand all this but maybe you should call the dentist. I hope you are feeling great very shortly! Susan

    I sincerely believe that there is a time in life for drifting.  There is a time
    for sitting back and getting in touch with yourself.  Some of our most
    interesting illuminations and ideas will come when we take time
    to reflect, time to kick back and cruise awhile.

    Joan, glad to hear you are out of hospital!!

    Jenn, It was nice to meet you at Madry's office, go figure the only day I didnt have to wait for my appointment was the day we would get to meet in person and didnt get a chance to really chat. Where you able to get to the picture forum, will be updating my thread this evening.

    During my appt today he took out a few stitches and removed the steri strips. My next appt is not for 3 weeks when I get my first post surgery fill. Thinking hes delaying a bit due to the blood flow to my nipples.

    iIm currious, How long after everyones MX did you ladies get your first fill

    Katie - I was just thinking the same thing, how unusual is it to not have to sit in his waiting room forever?! I was actually kind of annoyed because he barely even looked at me & said everything looked fine, then said he'd see me in 3 weeks for my first fill! I had to have someone from Bloomingdale come all the way to my house & then back to EGV just for that, when his GSH office is just 2 miles from my house. UGH! He told me to take the stri-strips off this weekend and to the best of my knowledge, there are no stitches that need to be removed.

    I did get all the info for the picture forum but haven't had much time to poke around. I never took any before pictures (I just assumed he would do that) but I had my husband take a few yesterday so I will try to figure out how to add them.

    I think he is going on vacation which is the reason for the delay in the first fill. What time is your appt? Mine is at 4:30 at GSH.

    Hope everyone else is doing well & enjoying the beautiful weather we're having!

    I did manage to get discharged in time to make my hair appt. Whew! Was feeling rather defiant so I had her cut it shorter than usual and really like it.

    So today I went back for my 6- month follow up with Rad ONC. Passed that okay and got a script for LE therapy. Then I stepped across the hall to see my ONC for my first Zometa infusion for the darn osteoporosis. Nurse couldn't find a good vein after all the IV's last week. So now I have to go back this Thursday for another try.

    Sounds like cateyz and Jenn are moving right al ong after surgery. Can't remember too well, but think that I got my first fill about 2 weeks after surgery.

    Joan:Yay haircut. Boo LE PT and bad vein. Can they do it in your foot? Might have better veins there.

    I believe I had my 1st expansion 2 weeks post surgery because I managed to get 3 in before chemo. Chemo was exactly 5 weeks post BMX.
