Success Stories!

I attended a birthday party for a great aunt this weekend. She just turned 86. 1 of her twin daughters was there. She was diagnosed 28 years ago with breast cancer at age 32. She went through chemotherapy and a BMX. I am telling you this: she is 60 and she looks amazing. I saw her in the Spring, but Saturday I saw her in Summer clothes. Unbelievable how good she looks!! Not for a cancer survivor.... Not for a 60 year old woman... She looks unbelievable FOR ANYBODY.
Her skin, her hair, her energy are amazing. I know she has always been active, but I don't think she's a workout warrior.
Watching her hug my wife made me tear up and I am tearing up now typing this.
God bless everyone here. Live long, glorious lives.

Hey, Maureen! I am not here as much, but I do have favorite topics that I lurk. You were 1 of my lights in the darker times. You gave me hope and that created positive energy that I was able to pass onto my wife. It helped get her through treatment. I can never repay you for that. You will always be dear to me. Great to see you, too. I think about the ladies here a lot and I answer all PMs sent. If I can help 1 person, I have done something good.

Thank you Colt for such a wonderful story. I love this thread, it sure helps some of us newbies get through some difficult times. The day I was diagnosed the radiologist told me one very important thing to keep in the back of my mind and that was that she sees women that were diagnosed 20 years ago at all different stages still coming in for their regular mammograms.

it's hard to get replies on success stories because women who come to these boards are mostly in treatment. Once you are through, we like to forget about it and get on with life. Most posts are from the last year or so. So it's not because there are few long term survivors. I do drop in, but rarely post anymore.

As a newbie (was diagnosed just over 4 months ago) and been absolutely terrified about the future. Reading posts about long-term survivors gives me so much hope for the future. I want to and fully intend to live to an old age. I have too much to do and see to be taken at a young age by this dreadful disease! I have saved this thread so I can refer back to it when I am feeling down and in need of hope. Thanks for all the positive stories and keep them coming they are a godsend for us frightened newbies xx

I have three friends who have passed the 15 year mark. Despite this, I still have those dark days so I really needed this thread today. Got caught up in reading all the depressing stories again and things like "there is really no cure for breast cancer" . Carmelle, so great to see you still post 11 years after starting this thread. I know a lot of ladies stop posting after a while, but we so need to hear from those who are doing well many years later.

I rarely post any more. Newbies should be aware that though BC.org is amazing, a lifesaver, it can give you a skewed perspective. A large number of BC survivors move on and don't post much, and these are the people who thankfully, have nothing to say! Just know that they're out there, lots of them! At my last onc visit in June, my onc 'promoted' me to seeing her once a year, rather than twice. That felt great. I have some days where BC doesn't enter my mind even once, even as I take my Femara. I just passed the four year mark, and am grateful to God for each minute. I allow myself to envision old age even. With a silent prayer, but I can now imagine it. Wish for it. Amazing! Stay strong! So hard to imagine during those dark early days, but time helps, promise.

I have an aunt who had Stage 3 breast cancer (she had positive nodes and does not remember how many) in early 2000 at the age of 34. She was hormone positive and took tamoxifen for 5 years. She is still cancer free and claims to have never thought about the disease post treatment.
