Hi Jeannette,
You are I are pretty close in dx and treatment (altho I did the 6 weeks of rads) and almost exactly one year to the day. I'm guessing you can get the prescription from your BS although it's usually more common to have a med onc prescribe and follow you for the 5 years. I'm also guessing that you may get Arimidex instead of Tamoxifen. Others can correct me but I believe Tam is more often given pre-menopause unless there are significant SE's with other AI's for us post-menopausal persons. (yes, I checked some of your other posts and see that if you are married 52 years you are probably 'post' not 'pre'!) Of course, your DH may have married you at age 2.
With your problems with meds also check our the Arimidex board. One poster, JO-5, also has severe problems with med SE's - but she did 5 years on Arimidex because, as she has always told the rest of us, the SE's of the little white pill is not as bad as the SE's of BC.
Best to you.

Thanks patoo! Do I have this right, since I am way older, than most of you, I had heard that Tamoxifen would be the one for me...Is Arimidex for younger women? I am 72, but God knows, I don't feel all those years are behind me, Ha! And I surely don't ACT like it...
And Dear Husband & I met when I just got out of High School! We were just "kids" it seems like, Ha! But we didn't get married for almost 2 years later... no money!
I'm glad to hear about the Tamoxifen being generic!!!!!!!!! I would RATHER take something like that, than take a chance with BC coming back! I know I had an easier time than most of you, but it still scared the bejuzzies out of me! All I can do is TRY the drug, & hopefully I won't have any SE's !!! Thanks for your help!
And Thanks also Kelly!........I'll hang around with you guys on this thread also! Jeannette

Jeannette, Arimidex and there's another (Femera? - I have sumtheimers too) is for post-menopause. But there are some 'seasoned' who are on Tamoxifen because they simply could not tolerate Arimidex.

Back from Mexico, gals. It was great - sunny and warm. Back in Calgary to -10C but little wind so it is OK.
Jeannette - I too am much older than most of the women on this site. (I have been married 43 years - and like the idea I might have been two years old ) I chose Tamoxifen to prevent BC recurrance instead of an AI as it is much 'friendlier' to our bones. That said, T seems to be prescribed for premenopausal women, as they are not able to take any AIs until they are post menopausal. As I knew I would be taking it for five years, I also chose to be tested to see if I metabolized T - as up to 50% of women do not metabolize it properly. (I used the Genelex lab in Seattle). As I am an 'intermediate metabolizer' I am on 30 mg (the usual is 20 mg). As I am Canadian, my T is fully covered by the Alberta Cancer Board, so I can't help you with cost.
Good luck with your decision making - a hard one.

Hi ladies. I am new to this thread. There are too many posts to read all the way through and I have a Tamoxifen related question. I have been on Tamoxifen since July 1st. I am getting leg cramps at night, nightsweats, mood swings, and my back and hips are hurting so bad that it is draining me. I had a herniated disc last year so I am not sure if all this pain is tamoxifen related or not. I have been working with a personal trainer for 3 months and it helped a bit but I am in serious discomfort daily. Even my feet hurt. Do you think any of these things are tamoxifen related. I feel like I am not able to do all the things I used to do. I have no energy either and I think it's because I never get a solid night sleep. Any feedback, comments or remedies would be greatly appreciated. Like I told my PCP the other day "I'm too young (48) to feel this old"

Hi Team
We had a wonderful time Christmas shopping and managed to get all but 4 gifts purchased, so I am a happy camper. Also my wonderful DH took us girls for a late lunch at the Cheesecake Factory at the top of Macy*s. We sat on the terrace and it started to rain...Lol! We moved to a table with some protection but it was a funny moment. And, wouldn't you know it we were too full for cheesecake!!
Pickle141 ~ Welcome to our thread! I have only been on T since October !st and have only experienced a late period so far. I have also not been sleeping well, but that could be due to stress. Here are some links to look at. Also I would recommend that you call your onc and let them know about your SEs.

Susie09: I loved your holiday songs-that was hilarious! Now I have to share that list with my friends and family- I know they will get a kick out of it.
Pickle: I've only been on tamox since mid October. I have some what I call hot "flushes" usually a couple during the night. My sleep has been variable lately-not too out of the ordinary. I have heard of people with foot cramps w/tamox but not leg cramps or hip pain. I've read about putting a bar of soap in the bed near your feet to help with cramps-don't know if it works b/c I haven't experienced that. I have also heard about mood swings too and have read that alot of women are on efffexor to help with the hot flashes and sleep problems. It might help with the mood swings b/c it is an antidepressant. Many women experience the tirednss that you describe. Let your oncologist know what is going on-you should not have to suffer like this. I'll be thinking aobut you and hoping that things improve for you. Take care.
KCL: My daughter was invited to go ice skating with a friend which delayed our baking but it'll be starting soon. Gotta get started... Love the cheescake factory cheesecake!
CatbirdC: Good idea getting your DH to go to the post office-bet it"s a madhouse.
Bonnie: Welcome back! That's quite a transition in temperatures.
Hope everyone has a great afternoon! TCK

Susie~ You and I must have posted at the same time...funny!! I am so glad to "see" you and look forward to hearing what is going on in your world.
Hannahbearsmom ~ The way I look at it, the closer to Christmas the fresher the product...LOL!! At least that's what I keep telling myself!

Pickle - I have been on Tamox since August. Have had foot cramps and occ. leg cramps at night. Terrible back pain that does not seem to be going away. It is better with chiropractor but still bad at night. It definitely makes it hard to get a good nights sleep. Not sure if the back is related to the T or not but I do think the leg cramps are. I tried the unwrapped bar of soap and it seemed to work for about a week - probably placebo affect but doesn't seem to be helping now. I did start on Effexor for the hot flashes and that seems to be helping. Lots of good info comes on this sight so just keep reading. Hard to keep up because there are a lot of post.
Susie - funny songs.

Thanks for all of your replies. I am not much of a pill taker so I have been reluctant to try effexor although I do have a prescription for it. Please let me know if you are on effexor and if so, how are you doing on it. How long does it take to work?

Pickle - I went into chemical menopause and Effexor was my miracle pill...I was very reluctant to take pills but my mood swings were terrible and my family was suffering. I was also having MAJOR hot flashes, I noticed within a two days a decrease in hot flashes...my emotions were no longer right at the edge and ready strike...within a week I was almost felt normal again (with the exception of dealing with daily BC). I have been on Tamox for 21 days and so far have noticed no additional SE's then what I was experiencing post chemo/exchange. For me the emotional chaos was worse then the physical se's and once my emotions were leveled out, I was better able to deal with the SE's.

Well I took my first Tamox last night and I must say for whatever reason I am not thrilled about it LOL. I have started reading through some of the posts so I can be prepared but from what I am reading it shouldn't be near as bad as what I have been through the past year right. I went ahead and signed up for a trial on ovarian supression. That bothered me a lot to make this decision as I am only 36 and I am very nervous to say the least about stopping hormones altogether. I am trusting that my doctor knows what is best. Anyone else getting on this trial?

Hi Ladies,
I hope all of you are well. I had my exchange surgery on Friday and have been sitting at home recovering. Surgery went well. I am getting excited Christmas day is near. It is my favorite holiday!
Kelly: Yes, you are correct about what I meant by clean eating. I am trying to stay away from processed foods. I have been trying to fill meals with fruits and veggies. I am also counting calories to ensure I stay below 1300 a day. It hasn't been easy as I LOVE french fries and chocolate! I did treat myself to a little bit of a Rice Krispie Treat this weekend. I also treat myself with a Chocolate Skinny cow in the evenings if I manage to stay on track and eat good all day.
Susie: Wouldn't it be nice if we are able to get away with no SEs while on Tamox? I sure hope we are able to.

Just a quick Hi. Got back from DC and Cleveland this morning, did some last minute Christmas shopping and am now in bed for the night ...and it's not even 6pm. Seems like I'm living out of a suit case these days. And back to my parents place tomorrow. The cool thing is that with the snow it does actually feel a like Christmas. Was in DC and got almost 2 feet. (Bonnie - it seemed to constantly mist snow in Cleveland; and folks told me it always does that. Is that true or were they giving an east cost girl a hard time ?) Anyway, I'm gonna watch tv, read thru the posts I've missed on this sight and snooze, sounds like a perfect evening ! Wil check in later !0

Hi Tamoxitrainers and Ho Ho Ho !!!!!
It's crazy time as everything is coming to count down 12-25. (12-24 for some of us. )
M~~ I'm a couple of hours from Cleveland and we don't get the winters they do, but that is an exaggeration I think. They do get terrible snows, a lot of them, and they're used to coping with it, so maybe that was why it was said.
I'm trying to think now just what I DO have to DO. Seems like something always pops us to bite you in the b*tt just when you think you've got it all done. LOL
Take Care Tamoxibeauties ~~ Santa is on his way.

Well it has been a couple of months since I last visited this thread, and I have discovered in that time that I am NOT allergic to Tamoxifen. After going off it for 4 months now, I still continued having the huge swelled lips, itchy palms and hives on my wrists and thighs. So now the infectious diseases doc is testing me for a C-1 deficiency brought on by chemo which can cause angioedema which mimics allergies! (These reactions began right after I ended chemo and started Tamoxifen so naturally we thought it was the Tamox because allergic reactions are listed as a possible side effect.) PLUS in that same period of time I have been off line, my period showed up out of the blue on my anniversary, no less! AND she visited for a full 7 days! Now I wait to see if this is going to be a regular thing because if it is then I will have to rethink Tamoxifen. Oh the decisions never end! (My doc said no Tamoxifen necessary if periods had stopped, which for the past 11 months they had stopped). Anybody else have this happen to them?

I am backkkkkkkkkkkkkkk!!!!! Ok, I never really left, I just am swamped! Did you miss me? I hope so! Sorry that I can't go back and read all of the posts. There are way too many for my lil brain to handle at this time. lol
So, Hi to the new tamoxibeauties! I hope that you are all doing well! I have only had headaches for a side effect so far, and, praying that is all I get.
I haven't been around because I am just overwhelmed with xmas! One of my girlfriends flew in and is practically living with me, which was not the plan. And, hubby has this week off, so, he is home and wanting to help. lol Ok, I know I should be happy about that, and I am, but, I need some spaceeeeeeeeeeeeeee! lol We went shopping all day today and I think we are done with that. We got all of the groceries as I am having several here for Christmas dinner. So, I think I will have him wrap the gifts tomorrow and maybe help with the cleaning. I am lucky cause he is a sweetheart wanting to help. I think my gf is the one that is really on my nerves. She just wants to do this and do that and I don't have time for that stuff. I think I may have to be firm with her. lol
So, is everyone ready for the big day? I hope I will be. I think I need a nerve pill. lol
Well, if I am not on too much, just know that I am thinking of you. I just have a lot to still do.
Merry Christmas you wonderful ladies!
Love, Susie

Koryn - TOO bad about the reaction. Hope the reason is discovered soon. Sounds incredible annoying... I am confused about the Tamoxifen, though. What does the amenoria have to do with it? I am post menopausal and elected to take T over an AI - but I AM taking it. Why would you not take it? It reduces the recurrance of BC in the other breast by up to 50%.
Cheers all - as you begin the count down. Hard to believe Christmas Eve will be here in less than 48 hours (yikes, I still have heaps to do: out-of-town friends for dinner tomorrow; oyster stew here late Christmas Eve (a family tradition) for my two children and their spouse/partner; cooking (potatoes, jicama/beet/orange/banana salad, marinated veggies) for pot luck at my sister's for Christmas dinner; as well as gifts to pick up and wrap....and the amazing thing is Christmas comes whether we are ready or not. I had a bit of a panic attack yesterday - was about to blame it on a T - induced mood swing - but fortunately, it passed, Almost 3 months of T down - 4 years, 9 months left
Sleep well all.

Susie: Another cutie! My daughter and I love to see the pics that you post--of course I have to "edit" out the ones that are not appropriate for a 10 year old. She is a true animal lover but I have allergies so we can't have a pet
MTG: Loved yours too!
Have a wonderful holiday tamoxifriends!

Lmao at Susie's and Mtg's funnies! I needed those.
I think I am like Susie as that I am really getting rattled about the holidays. I don't know if tamox has anything to do with it or not. I just seem really nervous and on edge. Is this normal?
I am also having the leg cramps at night. I tried the soap and it didn't work for me ofcourse. Any other ideas?
Hope everyone is well and enjoying themselves.
Merry Christmas!

Hi all on that tamoxitrain! This thread moves so fast that I can't keep up. Am I the only one? I am doing pretty well on tamox still which is great! I read about what some of the rest of you are having and am thankful that I don't have that. Well, not yet anyway. I am a bit moody, but, I don't think that is the tamox. I think it is just this time of year with so much to do.
There was a discussion before about drinking alcohol. I plan on doing a lot of that whether it is good for me or not. LOL
Glad to see you back Susie. We were going to send out a search party for you. LOL And, thanks for the cute kitty. I needed a laugh!
Nite
