YAY, Susie's back!! We missed you, girl! Loved the kitty!! LOL
Had a bone density test yesterday. I have a little bit of osteopenia in my hip... What now??
MTG: Love your funnies, too!!
Happy Holidays to all! Merry Christmas!!

Susie - give your GF a key, and the local cab companies numbers as well as some highlights she could visit and TELL HER you love her company but right now you need to focus on getting ready for XMAS. I'm sure she'll understand if you put it that clearly. She most probably doesn't realize that she's being a bit of a pain. Maybe even you can give her a "job" to occupy her ?
Debby- Yes I'm 100% rattled and overwhelmed too. So you are not alone. Having just spent the passed several months primarily focused on myself (which would not be like me under normal circumstances), I'm being hit full force by family stuff . On top of that, while I normally shop all year and put things away for the holidays, this year everything was last minute . Aargh !!!! I want cocktails....and put a massage on my wish list too !
Pickle - Like you, I'm not a pill taker. For muscle cramps at night, my med onc suggested Tonic Water just before bedtime, apparently the quinine in it is a muscle relaxant. Try it with some lemonade or juice...not bad. Also - Omega 3/fish oil supplements (which is nothing more than our grandparents cod liver oil in capsule form) is great for many, many things, including joint paint. And finally, if like me you make a distinction between prescription stuff and over the counter, you might want to try an occasional Aleve which also reduces muscle aches.
Harley - What is osteopenia ? My hip toward my back has been quite sore for weeks and can't figure it out. Feeling OLD. Hoping it's not due to Tamox since I've been on it less than 2 months.
And for those with Moodiness - It's become a family joke. Any time I'm bitchy, someone says "Oh, it must be the Side Effects." Kindof like a free pass. LOL

And today's Christmas smiles:

MTG: Love the Rudolph one--had to copy and paste an email with that one to share with family and friends! I know when I read on this thread that I can always count on you and Susie to keep me smiling! Merry Christmas!! TCK0
-
yes, this thread is moving very quickly. I can't keep up with it, either. Sorry if I miss someone.
MTG:
Osteopenia is the 1st stage of Osteoporosis... I have been told that it doesn't hurt. Tamoxifen protects the bones, so I don't think that would be your problem.
Love your pics, especially Rudolph!!
...so now the countdown begins again...
NINE more Tamoxifen pills!!!

Ladies,
I am EXHAUSTED!!! But still smiling!
MTG ~ You hit the nail on the head! I too usually buy things starting in summer, but this summer I was dealing with the bc and never caught up! All of a sudden it is here. I have decided that I am not going to let it get me down. I managed to do some baking, the rest my local pastry shop can do for me while I enjoy the time with my family...LOL! The Christmas funnies are hilarious!
Bonnie ~ Love that puppy and kittie pic...thanks for sharing!! You too Susie!
Harley ~ What do they suggest you do to prevent this from getting worse? Is this caused by the BigT? We will be counting with you Harley!
Jeanne~ You are too funny!! Enjoy your drinks!
Well team I am going out of town for a few days and won't be able to check in. So, I just want to wish you all a MERRY CHRISTMAS! Relax and thoroughly enjoy your time with family and friends!

Hmmm, my funny picture seemed to disappear. Or, to me it did. lol Oh wellllllllllll Hi ladies! It is late here and I am exhausted! HELP! lol Hubby and I baked cookies today and we got them all done. And, if I may say so myself, they look great and they taste great. He really stuck to it. He was a real trooper. Now, tomorrow we finish cleaning some more on the house ( the mess we made in the kitchen ) and rest! He even set the table for me, and, it looks great! Maybe him being off this week will be ok. lol
I love that picture Bonnie! I love animals, just love them! I hope you are ready for Christmas and a little rested up.
Hi Harley girl! I missed you too. Don't worry if I go MIA for a few. I will always be back. I just get busy and don't take the time to even turn the puter on half the time. So, was your bone density test ok? I hope that you will be ok. So, tamox helps our bones? I guess I forgot about that. So, YEA Tamox. lol
LOL @ MTG's funnies. Thanks for those! I love them! I did tell my girlfriend today that I wanted some alone time with hubby. I think she got the hint. Didn't see her all day. She called a few times, but, never came out.
Merry Christmas Kelly. Have a safe trip!
Happy Christmas Eve Everyone!
Love, Susie

Kelly, not to worry about your bones... tamoxifen HELPS the bones. But, for me, since I can't drink milk, it makes me sick... I vomit... and I have this addiction to Coca-Cola, which is really bad for the bones... phosphoric acid eats away at the bones... any sodas that have phosphoric acid are BAD for us.
And, no, my dr. hasn't suggested ANYTHING for me to do to maybe help control this. My pcp said that they don't treat osteopenia, but.... DUH... I am going to be switching to an AI on Jan. 1st, and they really wreak havoc on the bones. SO, therefore, I need to do SOMETHING more, besides calcium and vitamin D. UGH.... I sometimes wonder WHERE these drs. got their license... Sears & Roebucks?
Hey Susie... yes I have the beginning of osteoporosis, but my primary care dr. says there is nothing to be done about it... However, after the holidays, I will call my onc. Sheesh, why do we have to call EVERY dr. just to get the answer to our questions?? oh, and I will have to talk to the nurse, and she doesn't know ANYTHING... so I will have to gently nudge her, to tell her that maybe she should ask the dr.???.... Oh how I long for the day before breast cancer came to visit!!!
Glad you got your cookies made. We didn't make ANY this year!! Tonight, I have to bake some bread in my bread machine, to take with us tomorrow. We are having dinner at my Mother in laws on Christmas.
Hope everyone has a Wonderful Christmas!!

Love the pics! The breast cancer ornament is beautiful! I have one, too. It's glass, and it's a breast cancer ribbon. A friend sent it to me after I told her about the bc, and it was after my treatment had ended. We hadn't talked to Lana or her husband for awhile, so they didn't know about my bc dx...
LMAO on the Santa pic!! I hope that NONE of us get THAT present!!!!
Merry Christmas to everyone!!!

Harley - sounds like your friend's gift was lovely and meaningful. wierd that it was coincidental. I hope it found a nice place on your tree.
All - I've been meaning to share a little discovery with you ladies re: minimizing the knots of scar tissue under our skin from lumpectomies. Massage really does work ! Read on my rads thread how ladies with lymphedema were getting PT, including massage therapy and that a fringe benefit was that their scar tissue shrank. So I tried it on myself while laying in bed watching tv - just 10 minutes, moderate pressure and using the tips of 2 fingers in a circlular motion. I can get that darn lump under the skin to almost disappear. Now, it does come back in a day or two (guess there's some fluid build up) but for 10 minutes a day investment while hanging out, the results are amazing. My surgeon told me it can take up to 2 years to get rid of the knot; this is a good interim solution ! And I did check out the internet; apparently this is a common method - see: http://www.breast-plastic-surgery.org/scar-massage.html and http://www.lymphnotes.com/article.php/id/31/ and http://www.integrative-healthcare.org/mt/archives/2007/07/six_massage_tec.html . Wonder why my BS never mentioned it ?

MTG,
Maybe I didn't explain right... In January 2008, my dh talked to his friend on the phone, and they were catching up on all the news. My hubby mentioned to his friend that I had been getting treatment for breast cancer, but my tx was finished at that time. So, Lana, his wife, sent me that breast cancer Christmas ornament. So... I've had it for 2 years now, and whenever I put it on the tree, I think about my bc experience... a little sadness at Christmas time...
Also, my surgeon told me to put vitamin E oil on the breasts, to help get rid of the scars. It works; they have faded out quite a bit, but I can still see them. Maybe cause I know they're there... ;-)

Harley - You explained it right; I just read it wrong. Sorry. As for the scar, I remember seeing a sci fi movie years ago where the heroine had many scars and was embarrassed by them and the dashing hero told her that scars give a woman character and dimension. I liked that line then and do all the more now.
Re: your bone issues and starting AI's - have you asked your doctor about the Zometa drip that some on this thread, including Alaina, are already using. Apparently it (a) helps bones, (b) has the added benefit of reducing occurances of bone mets and (c) I haven't found any downside yet. I've decided to ask my medonc about it when I see him in February. Here are the links I published earlier:
a Feb 2009 study, "Zometa Reduces Risk of Breast Cancer Recurrence in Premenopausal Women, Study in The New England Journal of Medicine Reports" http://www.drugs.com/clinical_trials/zometa-reduces-risk-breast-cancer-recurrence-premenopausal-women-study-new-england-journal-medicine-6731.html
See "Bone drug helped stave off breast cancer" a 2008 article at http://www.breastcancer.org/treatment/hormonal/new_research/20080602.jsp

I spoke too soon about "no downside", seems it can cause jaw and dental problems...See another thread on this site: http://community.breastcancer.org/forum/78/topic/706589?page=2#post_1390781

MTG
Yes, I have heard about the dental and jaw issues from the Zometa.
I did ask my primary care dr. what I should do to try to protect my bones, since my onc is putting me on the AIs, which wreak havoc on the bones... My primary care dr is really no help with any of this... his wife had bc 25 years ago, when she was 30, but he hasn't really kept up with any of the new bc research... He just said "You are doing all the right things... we don't treat osteopenia".... .....sigh....
I guess I'll call my onc. after the holidays, to see what he suggests. I hate calling him, because I can never talk to him. I only talk to his nurses, and they don't know anything.... ....sigh...
As for the scar, it may not bother anyone else, but it bothers me... Whenever I look at it, when I'm getting dressed, after a shower, I think about all I've been through... some women have said that they have returned to NORMAL, and don't think about bc every day... not me... I don't think there will be a day, or even a minute when I don't think about it...
the countdown continues... SIX more Tamoxi-pills!!

Hi Post Christmas Tamoxitrainers !!!!! THAT'S A MOUTH FULL OF GREETINGS !!!!!
Hope we're all slowly but surely coming down from the rat race of holiday "itis" and getting back to normal??? whatever that is now. LOL
M~~ Sadly I don't think I would have had much of a scar from my lumpectomy, but then the margins weren't clear showing more cancer and the following month I had a mastectomy. That left me with what I've heard called a "dog ear" on the side. Ugleeeeeeeee.
I had read about massage therapy too and I did it. Unreal the improvement. The so called dog ear is hardly there at all. Only I'd know it. It firms up the tissue, helps the scar flatten out and I was one happy camper. I use a cream lotion. I still do it but will ask my surgeon when I go back just how long to continue.
Take Care Everybody,
Bonnie

Catbird,
My surgeon told me to use Vitamin E oil to help reduce my scars. I had a bilateral mast., and it really did help to make the scars fade. I still see them, and they make me sad. But, they are ALOT lighter than they were.
Happy Post Christmas Holiday, too you, too!!
Hi to everyone:
I'm feeling much better today. I was feeling kinda depressed yesterday, so very sorry for the negative posts... MTG, thanks so much for the pms... they really helped to boost my morale!
My countdown continues... FIVE more Tamoxifen pills to go!!
Hugs to all,
Harley

Hi All,
Just dropping by to update my tamox situation, which is very tame. I have been taking tamox for 5 months and no major problems. Little bits and pieces but the main thing is that I have pains in my limbs and sometimes in my lower back - my onc prescribed Lyrica and I guess that if I wasn't taking that the pains might be worse. The other thing is I don't sleep so well - 4 to 6 hours at the very best.
I really can't complain. I just hope it is working. I have my first post tx mammo in 3 weeks and a visit to my onc the same day (exactly 1 year to the day after my mast) - I'm trying to think what I should ask him about, I really don't want to be at home after the visit thinking oh I should have asked him this or that but I get so nervous I never seem to ask the right questions.
Anyway - I hope all of you are doing well and if you have any hints on anything I should clarify with my onc, please let me know.
Thanks.

Hi Everyone,
Ainm ~~ Jot down on a little piece of paper what you want to ask your doctor. Then when you sit to talk with him, just glance down and ask away !!!!
Harley ~~ Vitamin E is great. I've used it for healing before too. My embroidery work is great so I just used the cream so my fingers can glide and do a better massage. It's the actual massage that toned me and got rid of the doggie ear.
It's just now starting to feel somewhat like regular time and not holiday time to me. I'm through visiting and having visitors as of yesterday.
I'm pretending it's summer. LOL

Hi all! Thought I would post to let you know that I am still alive. This holiday has been so hectic and I am just wore out. I don't sleep well anyway since I started taking tamox, and, with the holiday stress, it has been worse. I wish I could just go to bed for a week.
Hope you all had a good Christmas. Wishing you all a Happy New Year!
