Sleep has improved for me although there are times I still have a restless night or two. I really was having a hard time getting a good nights sleep until I started exercising more. It surprised me how much difference there was between little exercise and playing volleyball 2x's a week for 1.5 hr each.
I started playing back during the summer and almost immediately I started sleeping better. Life has gotten in the way and it has been about a month since I got to play but, I'm still sleeping pretty well. My right calf muscle is just almost cramping lately but even that improves when I'm more active.
My most serious SE has been the lack of menstrating. Actually I kind of like that but my gyn did verify that my uterus lining has thickenend so she consulted with my onc and put me on 12 days of progesterone replacement to jump start my system even though my tumor was hormone receptor positive. My oncotype score was 6. The thickening was uniformed so my gyn isn't concerned that it is cancer but she does want my system to flush.
Sorry if this was TMI.

eastcoast--my gyn didn't even have me stop the tamox for my TAH/BSO. It takes about 6 weeks for tamox to get out of your system.

Funny you ladies should mention the toes as my symptom I think is a little different and with only my left foot......my toes seem to pull forward and away from the big toe.....and it is so painful......not sure if you would call this a cramp, but pretty strange......
Sherryas for the Insomnia, mine was horrible the 1st 3 months and my MO said oh that is not a SE....dumbass he is..... as he thinks I just make this stuff up.....Anyway, hang tight as mine got better as the months went by, now it will be occasional times I wake up and have a hard time going back to sleep. I also had the constipation which I had took Colace and then decided to adjust my diet to add more fiber and I was able to get off Colace......I just started my 10th month and seriously, I feel great.....bitchy sometimes and tired, but great!!!!
Jo how are you today????

June, that's the way my toes are too, and also left. I'[m 3 month in so hope my insomnia follows your pattern.

Okay...day 5 of Tammy....still no se's? Hmmmm.... still crossing my fingers!!!
0 -
YAY for you Susan....fingers are crossed here as well........0
-
June - Still feeling a little puny today but overall much better. I have a day off from work today so I can lounge around the house.
SusansGarden - I am a month into Tammy and I did not start feeling anything until about 2 weeks. Just minor - toe joint pain. It has improved my sleep and the hot flashes are now down to warm waves - could be why I am sleeping better. Cross my fingers you stay SE free.

Thanks June and Jo.
Jo~ I'm jealous of your day off from work.. I want to lounge too! Glad you are feeling better though.

I'm a left toe cramper too. MUCH more painful than the standard calf muscle charlie horse.

Love those rose colored glasses!
Sue ~ Hope you stay side effect free ~
Sleep is an impossible thing for me on tamoxifen. I can't take it. So tired during the day. Still need to try that glycine. For now I take an ambien about 1x a week just to catch some zzzzz's.
Hope everyone has a great day !

JustmeAlicia-I can barely keep my eyes open here at work and I still have this afternoon to go. I will def take my ambien tonight, but am going to get the glycine and try it tomorrow night.

For those of you not being able to sleep... have you ever had sleep problems before? Or were you previously a sound sleeper? How long into taking the tamoxifen did you notice the sleeplessness?
I've always been a sound sleeper... except for during the recovery from the BMX. Since I took a month off of work, I found myself taking too many naps during the day.. and then couldn't sleep at night. Since I started back to work in January, I've slept like a baby...crossing fingers again!!!

I'm almost three weeks into tamoxifen and have noticed no real side effects. At first I seemed to get a "warm" flash and a bit of dizziness about an hour after taking, but that is fading away--only notice that if I'm not busy. Sleeping has not changed. I have been waking up several times a night for years now. If anything, I seem to sleep a bit better since the tammy. I started by splitting my dose, but after a few days decided to try it all at once. I take it in the evening now, and it seems to work fine.
Jo, hope you get feeling better. You've had a rough time.

Sherry - Wishing you a restless night tonight and stay warm.
susantm - I am about 95% better today. Still a bit puny - glad I'm off. This whole journey with BC has been one thing after another for me. Once I get through these next two appts - lung specialist and surgeon - I am going to fight like h@@l to make things better. So want to move and and some days I feel I succeed and others no so. I am always trying to get myself in a positive mode not matter what is going on but at times it is hard. I do know things will get better and I am being patient.

Alicia--try melatonin (3 mg an hour before bedtime)---no SEs except for the drowsiness that you want in order to get to sleep! You can get it OTC , non-habit forming per the pharmacist. It takes about 5 to 6 days to get into your system. I've been using it for a few years with good results for my difficulty sleeping.

Well I decided to call the Dr's office about my insomnia just to see what they said. They said it is not very common but can happen so they want me to not take it tonight and take it in the morning for a couple of mornings to see if I see a difference. I just hate taking pills in the am because I always forget them.

Sherry - I am doing the split dose and sometimes afraid I will miss the one at dinner. The morning is no problem - I take my blood pressure medicine and most of my supplements.
Try putting the bottle in the kitchen where you will see it. Next to the coffee pot if you drink it.

I also have the toe cramping. I was playing volleyball last night and they were cramping up in the middle of the game. Makes it hard to move quickly. The cramping seems to come and go. Sometimes will have it off and on for about a week and then it goes away for awhile.
The insomnia is slightly better with the 1000 mg glycine capsule before bed. I still take 1/2 and Ambien CR about twice a week. The nurse practitioner at my oncs said I shouldn't cut it in half but I hate taking a whole one as then I have really weird dreams. I have been doing it for awhile now and it doesn't seem to hurt anything. They also recommended Benedryl and were surprised when I told them I wasn't supposed to take it with Tamox. They looked up and found that it can decrease the effectiveness of Tamox. I definitely don't want to do that.

Hi Ashby
I have been taking Tamoxifen for a year now and (unfortunately) not had any weight loss. But then again while I was having chemotherapy (AC) I didn't lose any either and was barely eating anything...??? I walk and do Tai Chi every day and have a healthy diet so I am looking at other reasons why that might be and am currently looking at some very interesting posts and research about adrenal fatigue/hormone imbalance. Anyone got anything on that?

Hi Harley44
My hair started to grow back soon after chemo (maybe 2 months) andat first it looked like a layer of frost. Soon it started to CURL and I kept looking in the mirror wondering who that person was. My hair was straightish before and I kept it short. Now it is a thick mass of curls and I look like a very mature Shirley Temple!!! What a wild journey that was. I found that losing my hair was the most devastating of all the processes that occurred. Weird that as I am not particularly up there with the whole beauty regime thing.

Hi Michmom
I have been on Tamoxifen for about a year and have also noticed some weight gain recently. Lets keep in touch and compare progress? As for aches and cramps - one of the side effects of tamoxifen can be cramps due to elevated blood calcium. I am still trying to winkle some info out of doctors as to what that means. However I get leg cramps and my blood calcium is at an acceptable level so who knows???
