Is anyone else an atheist with BC besides me?

The nurse's would give patients a mixture called a "Brown Cow", which is mixed with prune juice and Milk of Magnesia and then heated in the microwave for a few seconds. It, usually, worked. If not, they'd have to start from the bottom...you know...the enema thing. Sometimes, they would do digital stimulation of the anus, which means going around and around with the finger in there to stimulate gastro-colic reflex...
Was that too much information.
Anyway, eating pecans, macadamia nuts, spinach, or pears helps to keep my bowels to move. Just think of what food gave you the runs and that should work.

Sunflowers, I did your method with the prunes in the water, lemon juice, and added some splenda then nuked it for 1 min. They came out soft, sweet and tolerable to get down. I just hope now that they come out! Got out to walk today and off pain meds so maybe that will all now work in my favor for some significant relief...if you know what I mean! Rabbit pebbles just aren't enough. Sorry to sound a bit gross, but I am almost ready for an enema! Kitty

Kitty -- I'm so happy to hear about clean margins and nodes -- and I perfectly understand the retail therapy!
Now then, on to your inner workings (or not workings, as seems the case): there is one absolutely surefire way towards unblocking the blockage, and that is a tbsp of castor oil. Hold your nose, tip the spoon into your mouth and swallow as fast as possible. Wash your mouth immediately with your favourite beverage!
Oh, and stay within easy reach of the bathroom for the next 3 or 4 hours!
Otter -- thanks for your mention of leaf's thread.

Oh Lindasa, sounds like a last ditch effort I might have to take. Kitty0

I've found cherries to be helpful.

Blueberries seem to do it for me (not sure if I tried them for chemo-constipation, though).

It seems that chemo-constipation does usually require laxatives and sometimes stimulant laxatives for a portion of the cycle, and then the fruit and prune juice work after the worst is over.
0 -
That makes sense, River_Rat. I used senna (sparingly) in addition to trying to eat foods that I knew from experience had a laxative effect on me. I honestly don't know what it is about blueberries, but if I eat some for breakfast and then go for a run . . . I'd better have a couple of pit stops mapped out!

I ate too many bing cherries a couple of days ago and I can tell you they work right away..

I love bing cherries! I'll get some tomorrow, Thanks! Kitty

once when I was trying to lose weight I ate a whole bag of dietetic ju jubes. Probably as good as castor oil. Now why didn't I remember that when I was on chemo?!

Isn't it the pits Kitty ... you expect to hurt in one spot and then it sneaks up and gets you from a totally different direction. My sympathies.

Brilliant news Kitty and hellos all round, haven't posted for some time..Taxotere last Friday and it really knocked me out this time, apart from making me pretty depressed...I think from the steroid high I come slamming down and feel down in the dumps for a few days..apart from the fact that I feel that I've been going on with this for ever and can't remember a time before bc..in fact it's actually only been about 4 and a half months, but I'm sure you know what I mean.., a lifetime. Actually I've only got one chemo cycle left before surgery, and I really can't wait to move on to the next phase.

(((hugs))) Maria. I know exactly what you mean ... it does take over your life for awhile. I had AC and didn't have the steroids ... sounds like they make it worse ... ugh. Only one more to go is good ... the end is in sight.
All I can say is pamper yourself all you can, moan and groan as much as you need to, and know that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Maria, sorry that you've had a hard cycle. The steroid high and then crash can be horrible. When the steroid crash is too bad some lymphoma chemo patients have their steroids tapered off over a couple of days rather than going from full doses to nothing, which makes it more tolerable. I don't know if they do that with your chemo, but it might be worth asking your oncologist about.
One more cycle! I'm glad you'll soon be done and on to the next phase. There are some things that definitely look better "in the rearview mirror" and this is one of them.

the dietic candies have SORBITOL in them - also "warnings" about the effects of too much....
Maria
the steroid "crashes" were the worst part of chemotherapy for me - took days to get back to a livable level of energy, and it IS cumulative - so the worst, really, is almost over. Then, you will have the advantage man of us didn't, after surgery, of being able to gauge the effectiveness of the chemotherapy. Hope the tumor is so small it's hard to find!!!!!

Maria, Lots of ((hugs)) your way cause I know that when you're hurting, no matter where, a hug really helps. I'm just beginning this journey but appriciate all the support and warm fuzzy feelings from everyone. This is a strong sisiterhood and I love how it oozes over from everyone. You'll make it through and we're all here to help you through! Kitty

Oh what a relief it is! Must have been the softened prunes and the pound of cherries. Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Kitty

Thank you all for your support and suggestions... much better today, food not completely disgusting but am beginning to sense faint tastes somewhere along my palate (I HATE not being able to taste my food properly), an altogether more positive day, went for a swim this afternoon and the sea was clear and deep and blue and I can begin to appreciate the world again. Hope you all have a weekend full of positive things, and Kitty, keep up with the prunes and cherries!!

Maria .. what a lovely day for a swim. It sounds like it refreshed your body and spirit.
Kitty .. glad to see you are feeling better.

I love to swim too. No sea here but the pool is warm and clear. I can't swim until after next week's follow-up and the Dr gives his okay. Maria...your post just brought me back to that wonderful feeling and even made me feel better today. I had company the past 3 days and have a case of "overdoers" today. Slept most of the afternoon away. This fatigue sure can creep up on ya and then SLAM your down for the count. I must remember all the advice to just rest. Kitty

Morning All!
Kitty ... it's a good idea to rest when your body says it's time. We start feeling a little better and want to do so much. That's how I was. And then I would end up needing a 2-hour nap! ha! By the time you're swimming again, you should be feeling so much better.
hugs,
Bren

Hi All,
Finally got a full night's sleep without waking up. Got up at the crack of noon! Learned my lesson and will just lounge outside today and enjoy grandchildren's visit. They don't know about my BC, too young to understand. Have a great weekend everyone! Kitty

Hi Kitty .. glad to hear you are resting today enjoying your grandchildren. You'll start to get your strength back day by day! It's wonderful your grands live close to you. Mine are in San Diego and I only get to see them twice a year, sometimes only once a year. I sure do miss them and they grow up so fast.
hugs,
Bren

You need a dose of San Diego Bren, and maybe a cuppa coffee with me...

Lisa .. I'm hoping to get there in October, and this year I will make it a point to visit with you!!
hugs,
Bren

Kitty, good for you. I've had few uninterrupted nights (hot flashes) in the last 11 years, so I'm jealous. Keep resting and recovering!

Hi all, Busy day with 2 of the grandkids (6yrs and 2 yrs). Sure wish I had that much energy! They went swimming and I had to watch from dry land in the lounger until I get the all clear on Friday. They were a little bummed that I could not go in. Oh well, I told them that next week should be good. Darn BC can sure cut into the fun. Back to work tomorrow after the last 2 weeks off. Will take it easy and have my student worker do the physical jobs. LOL

First day back at work went well. Sat on my behind most of the time. My co-workers gave me a get well card and a dinner gift certificate. It felt so nice to be thought of while I was gone. I think I'll use it when I'm feeling down later during upcoming therapy. Feeling good today but watching out so I don't over due. Lesson learned. Kitty
