Is anyone else an atheist with BC besides me?

well what a way to join this thread. I see some names here I know. Hi all!!!!
I don't know what to call myself, but I'm not a church going, bible toteing, quoting, look down my nose person.
I've gone to several flavors of churches. Didn't like them, their beliefs, or the members. If you want that, fine. Just don't shove it down my throat.
My childhood bff from out of state came to visit shortly after treatment. She and her husband put their hands on me without permission and prayed over me. It was all I could do not to kick them out of my house. There has been no communication since then and won't be.
So I'll continue to read here😍 So nice

solstice can simply be a real event that occurs every year with no belief in it being something else .

I copied this last year, quite possibly from this thread. I'm so affected by the weather that I take the solstices seriously. Seattle has a Solstice parade in the summer.

Spookiestmom: I would hate anyone's to pray over me. Yuk!I have no religious belief despite all my dxs. I did do some volunteering in a very worthy Christian charity - the people would pray in meetings or over lunch. I felt it was their space and I always respected them and bowed my head etc. I never mentioned it but refused to pretend I was anything but an unbeliever. Got occasionally asked which church I went to - I would say I didn't, or did I want to join their church - no thank you. I did volunteer because I felt it was the right thing to do not because I felt my religion expected me to. I was looking for a job at the time and feel sure I could of got one there if I had any religious belief or the gaul to pretend I did!
I love Christmas and love going to my parents village, Temple Cloud, in England. (excited to be there this year!) and to their Christmas service - held in a very old church only open a few times a year. Christmas traditions are part of my heritidge and I love that they mostly come from older and more 'heathen' traditions.
Scarily my recent DX has made me a bit more certain of my feelings and feel I may start becoming a bit more outspoken, frank and (let's hope not too much) direct!
Here's to Christmas or whatever you call your winter celebrations!

This dropped off my favorites too- and i just noticed it!
AND I was just talking about how much I missed SPOOKIESMOM!
Lady! So glad to see you again!
Imma have to use that Accord meme everywhere. LOL!
Wren, I post that one every time my loved ones get a little to religious on my facebook page with me. You'd think after 32 years they'd get it....
My motto: Dowhatchalike, just keep it away from me.
I'd say that 95% of the people i actually am friends with are some kind of religious followers, but unlike my sister and that other 5%, they don't talk about it, which is cool. I don't discuss my lack of faith unless someone starts the conversation, usually. Mutual keeping it to ourselves, as I think should be the case- everyone just practice your faith or non-faith in private. But that small %- whew! I have to step away or unfriend, unfortunately I can't un-sister. I love her, but she is a craycray catholic and also a giant hypocrite about it. I lose my mind sometimes around her. I celebrate Xmas as a secular thing. For me it was about spending time with my grandparents (who have passed on) so I go ALL OUT. I have like- 7 trees. My BF really hates me this time of year
I love holiday music, eggnog, and celebrating the idea of real love between all peoples, even if it is just for one day. (talk about a pipe dream!) I'm also in a tiny blue dot in the middle of red here in TX. I love my state, it wasn't always so repressive. It actually was very progressive for decades. I don't know what happened, but it is not an improvement. Haven't been able to talk to most of my family since the primaries. I'm just so horrified by the entire situation at this point. Not helping me heal from my DIEP surgeries that I just had. I never in a million years thought that we would have the horror that is trump as out pres elect. (i'm not altogether sure he'll get sworn in with all the things popping up, but then we have to deal with pence. Neither is a good thing.)
Anyhow, here's hoping that we make it through without starting more wars or the final one.

I just had a lol moment. When I informed a friend of mine of my diagnosis, she said "I'm sure all of you family is praying for you". Realising that she was being serious, I said "you know my family are all atheists?" Awkward silence...
Should have just said you'd say a prayer for me...

I had a good private laugh at work one Halloween. I wore my pentacle earrings and a neutral shirt. My born again stupidvisor says, oooh I like your earrings!! Would you like to come to my church?
Um thanks, and no I can't do that.

I think the solstice is closer to the 20th. Some of us may be close to what some would call humanists, but pretty much I don't believe in little green men or easter bunnies although I may enjoy them at times.

Pentacle, I looked it up on Wiki. Symbol of the Earth, how awesome! I liked the best this quote on handling spirits:
"...show them the pentacles, and receive them with kindness, gentleness, and courtesy; reason and speak with them..."
Kindness and reason, that's what it's all about!

Jwoo . . . I feel like I've been sucked down a worm hole and have woken up in an "alternate" universe. Only in an alternate universe could some one as UNQUALIFIED as Trumpty Dumpty become president.
I pretty much keep my mouth shut regarding my faith. It's no one's business but mine (unless some one sincerely asks me). I respect all faiths, including the old ones. Before Catholicism spread thru out Europe, women had way more power and WE were the religious/spiritual compasses who led our tribes. After Catholicism spread, so many women were tortured and killed because they were healers, midwives, and shamans (shamanesses?) and the MEN who became the "religious" leaders felt threatened by that.
Sorry for the history lesson...I get very keyed up over women's history of abuse. I'm also affected by the seasons. Have suffered from Seasonal Affective Disorder for decades (lack of daylight leading to depression and anxiety). The solstice is very special. There are those who say Christ wasn't even born in December, but they moved His birthday to December to coincide w/ heathen/pagan practices and make it more acceptable.

Oh, Wren, I love that "reason for the season"!! I need that for FB.
Solstice is Dec 21. We can party here on this thread.
JWoo: 7 trees? Wow!

Wrenn: I so agree with you on public declarations of personal faith in the UK. he US way of insisting religion is central to politics drives me crazy. I remember when Tony Blair was in office as Prime Minister in the U.K., and his wife was an acknowledged Catholic, he went to great lengths to show he was not beholden to religion. He did declare himself a catholic when he left office. Also - in the U.K. the Church of England is thought of to be left wing, here religion seems to take the opposite stance. Where is the emphasis on welfare for those in need!

I'm fine with people offering to pray for me; I don't believe in any particular religion, but I do believe that there are profound mysteries around us, and if they can channel some kind of positive energy my way, I'll take it. I have some closeted Pagan friends who will pour wine on my behalf in the moonlight. That's more than welcome, too. The intent is what is meaningful to me.
Just don't ask me to go to your church, or any church, to get though this.
I enjoy the traditions and festivities of Christmas. Hell or high water, I will have a small tree with gaudy colored lights up in my living room this year. It makes me happy. Of course, with a college-aged child whom I DIDN'T beat enough empathy into (I hear you, Lita!), I will do all the damn setting up and taking down myself. Not sure how well I will do with Christmas shopping this year; it's going to be lean, with a lot of (I lie; 100%) online purchases. No energy or will to shop in an actual store.

Scwilly and Wren, your countries do it right with regards to religion (and most other things, too!). Religion shouldn't be part of politics, period. Separation of church and state here is a joke. In Texas, where I live, Jesus is inescapable. I went to a civic club meeting for our neighborhood long ago and they rented a room at a local church. The pastor came in and said a prayer, ending with "in the name of our lord and savior, JC." This wasn't a church event; this wan't a religious gathering, and I am Jewish. I don't want someone praying over me in the name of JC. I never went back.
Our moronic fundamentalist governor and state lege just passed a law that fetal remains (from abortions/miscarriages) must be buried or cremated. Sheer patriarchal insanity.
Ugh. I'd move to England in a heartbeat.

I lived there and know you are not exaggerating at all. So glad to be up here now. No one has called me 'little lady' since I left.

Life here in Australia is so different. I only know one or two people who attend church. And that's not regular attendance. Religion is not something that is talked about and is certainly not part of everyday life for the vast majority of Aussies. Scripture is still offered in public schools (about 30 minutes a week) but you do have the choice to opt out. I have joined several online groups since my BC diagnosis but unfortunately they are not about questions, answers, advice and sharing knowledge. It's all about the perceived "big man" and prayer circles. I respect the rights of others to believe but find that same respect is not returned when I say I'm an atheist. I believe in being a good person and see nothing wrong with that.

Count your lucky stars that you live in a country of adults, Smurfette. Extremist religious nuttery has made everyone here effing crazy!

It disgusts me that brainwashing of children is condoned.
I appreciate every day that I live in Australia especially as we have universal health care but that's another topic.
For those on FB this page may give you a laugh:

Hi I just wanted to say hi to ananda8 (once anatma?) and SoCalLisa (and all your gorgeous flower photos) - I used to be Flannelette, then was Zucchini for a bit, now am Flannelette2 - I rarely check here any more but once in a while get curious - also maybe because my shoulder aches at night recently and I think - arthritis? then a little voice wonders - bone mets? but not worried enough to do anything.
Also someone new right in my area, KB870 from Brockville, ON - hey I live near Mallorytown! right next door to the Purple Door on the 1000 Islands Pkway. I mention this because it's a metaphsysical/new age type book & gift store and lovely.
Not one single person here talks about their religion, though there are anglicans active at a pretty little Church nearby - very unobtrusive and inclusive and once in a long while I go there to listen to hymns. Not one person here has ever said they would pray for me but if you go a few miles north away from the river & into the country there are odd little churches which are not the main kind. We're all pretty much atheists and hate the Dumpster too. Scary, as we live right across the river from the US. We're going to build a wall to keep him out! I LOVED the most recent SNL creepy hallucinogenic skit on the world as seen by the world's nuttiest and most deranged narcissist.
Please excuse, off-topic, couldn't help it, just came from FB.
Hope you are all doing well and great to see your posts!

Good to see you Flannelette.
Two obits mentioned the election as a contributor to the demise of the person.
