Is anyone else an atheist with BC besides me?

I am wondering when both teams pray before a game, which team will god choose to win...

It used to drive me nuts when women who were interviewed after giving birth to mega-multiples (e.g. quints) ascribed their ability to carry all their babies to term to faith, prayer, and God's will. I thought, "What does that say about the millions of women who have suffered repeated miscarriages or could never get pregnant at all, that they deserve infertility because they didn't pray enough?

Solfeo, many people "leave it up to God" as it absolves them of all responsibility. I don't get it either.

Solfeo, I hope your child ends up in the 50% that don't have it. When will you know? I agree about terminating a pregnancy sure to end in disability and suffering.

Freya, Good to hear from you.

I'm so glad I found this thread! Good to know others share my same thoughts! I grew up in and still live in a small community, bible belt territory. I don't know any atheists in my community and I NEVER talk about religion. People just don't understand how you could not believe in god. When the athletes win a game and point up to the sky, like it was all god's doing, I think what about all the people suffering in this world, and he chose to help YOU win that game!! Wow, how truly special you must be! I have seen too many people in my life die long, painful deaths, and watched my children go through hell. But I have gotten through it all without god. However, I am never offended when someone says "I will pray for you" as I know that is their way of showing love and concern. I send positive thoughts instead of prayers to everyone!

    Hey All!

I am a Christian. I will admit going through something like this tests your faith and your perspective on life. In my case, my faith has given me more strength.

BUT I do know there are many different beliefs and non- beliefs out there. Putting religion aside, one thing I've found helps me get through the crap is trying to do something good for other people. Volunteer work in your local community. Even just coming on these boards and talking with people who are newly diagnosed so they aren't as scared.

I realize volunteering is easier said than done when you're going through cancer treatments. I have a lot of days where I'm just like nah, I think I'll lay on the couch and eat some cookies...

But if you can do it, it's worth it. For you and for them.

    Hang in.

When my cousins oldest fell into a pool and nearly drowned at 18 months old, everybody in the family prayed and prayed for god to heal her. Didn't happen. She lived to about 21 with the ability of a 3 month old.

That did it for me. I couldn't understand how a loving god wouldn't heal that beautiful child.

Agree with you all. Why wouldn't a loving god heal the child? Why is there suffering at all?

Religion has always been a way to control the masses, usually by fear. Understandable in the middle ages perhaps, but it is now the 21st century. I choose to put my belief in science.

Thanks Wren, it is nice to see you again too.

nem126:  I would call myself a Christian although I do not believe in God.  To me being a Christian more or less means that you treat others with the same respect and kindness that you expect.

Bill Maher was on a CNN special program last night and is a well know atheist and very liberal. A funny part at the end of the show was that he would now love to have Romney in the White House and if Romney could make that happen Bill would become a Mormon!!! So funny. Guess even atheists now and again want some magic miracle to happen irrespective of political preferencesLoopy

magiclight - Happy. Comes to something when Romney, who was seen to have a major fault because he kept 'binders of women'!, is back in fashion. Now all sorts of 'sins' seem to be forgiven in 45! Anything better than the current incumbent in my eyes!

KB8670 - thats so irritating when people take that stance. I am very happy with my and my family's moral compass without the need to believe in a 'God'.

    Saw this yesterday on FB.

I saw what looked like a live re-creation of Calvary on my way to Dallas yesterday. I couldn't tell if they were mannequins or the other kind of dummies. SickTired what the hell is wrong with people that they think they need to do this?

Compassion should be your first reaction?  So why do you care what others believe or do as a sign of those beliefs?

We better care what others believe because they sure as heck care about our lack of belief.  Most states still have laws on the books preventing atheists from holding public office. The laws are unconstitutional but many still believe in those laws.

I don't care what other people believe. I care that they think I need to be "saved" and try to push their religion on me,, and their religious view of social issues, (birth control, abortion) on the whole population,, no matter what they believe. Separation of church and state !!!!

Still seriously effed up to have that right on the highway. I can imagine children being traumatized for life seeing people crucified. Talk about it being pushed on you....

When I told my work group of my stage IV de novo diagnosis in November, several of them told me "I hope you're not mad but I'm praying for you". As a non-believer staunchly against organized religion I wouldn't be taking comfort in that, however, they "believe" and they care enough to do what they think might help me. I can't be mad at that. I did have one pushy co-worker though who wanted me to join him in a prayer for me. I told him that was never going to happen and that it would be totally dis-ingenious, why would you even want me to? As far as I know I am still in 5 prayer groups currently, lol.

Offering to dust and vacuum your house would probably be more of a help immediately after your surgery. Offers of prayers are usually made to make the one praying feel better.  I know this sound cynical.  I just would be more confident that the one praying was sincere if the offer of tangible help was included.

I ran across a poem by E.E. Comings I found very beautiful.

[i carry your heart with me(i carry it in]

i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear;and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
     i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)

Missed National Day of reason on the first Thursday in May of every year. Looks like I forgot, but try to celebrate it everyday, nonetheless. Belated National day of reason.

    magiclight,

Thank you, and the same to you. There's precious little reason in this country these days so we have to appreciate it wherever we find it.

I so hate when people think "God is on their side." It is so useless to think that, when some of the most devout, prayerful, optimistic, kind-hearted people in the world have died prematurely from cancer or side effects of treatment. For example, my mother who died from complications following Whipple surgery for pancreatic cancer.

Well, my mom always used to say, "God takes His favorites home early." She died from soft tissue sarcoma at age 48.

    Not very comforting, I know.

Being Stage 4, I guess I'll be one of the favorites, too.
