Hi Ladies, I am new to this thread and do not post very often on other threads.  I want to show ladies that are beginning chemo and coming to your thread what my hair looks like after using the Penguin Cold Caps.  I didn't have great success but am very greatful for the success I did have.  These pics are 7 1/2 weeks post chemo.  The the great thing with using the cold caps is that the hair that I did lose during chemo began to immediately regrow during the rest of my chemo.  If any ladies are intersted, just google "Penguin Cold Caps" there are several women that have used them with great success.

Chevlev: Oh sorry if I was unclear -- I finished the first four A/C DD -- and now am doing 4 taxol (and Herceptin every three weeks)... just had my 2nd taxol (also DD)... so TWO MORE!  Can't wait to be done on November 9.  Herceptin continues til next summer....

Marybe: do you think I should wait til Nov 9 or start using the Nioxin now?

Also, re: Biotin -- thanks for the info -- heading to Whole Foods tomorrow :)  Though I will have to check with my DR (I suspect she will tell me to wait til after Taxol is done Nov 9 to start taking them).

    Thanks - Lilah

TexasRose - I have been taking 10,000 mcg of Biotin daily and I started about 3 weeks before I finished with Taxol.  My oncologist said Biotin was fine - it would not interact with the chemo.

My hair grows EXTREMELY slow - always has.  I finished chemo May 27th and have about 1-3/4" of hair right now.

Thanks jancie. I guess I better up my dosage. I have always had very fast growing hair. I'm hoping it still is. Sending you hair growing vibes!

Lilah, start the Nioxin now - what can it hurt?   Anything to get the hair growing faster!!

News Flash::::   I was able to get my skinny flat iron to de-curl my baby bangs!!!!  Now it doesn't look like I am a little Italian man (not that there's anything wrong with them, I am Italian too), but now it looks kind of like when Alyssa Milano had a pixie.  I was able to de-curl somewhat the rest of the top of my head and try to get it a little spiky on the back.  Woo hooo!!!!  Flat irons rule!!!!!  (Of course, I nearly gave myself third degree burns trying to get too close to my forehead, but what's a little burn, right??)

Definitely check with your onc before starting any vits or supplements... many (or some) oncs such as mine advised waiting until 3 weeks after tx before going back on.

I'm taking 10,000 mcg of biotin along with a B stress vitamin... also, I used the nioxin follicle booster and shampoo.

Nioxin help - Ladies with Nioxin experience please advise. I went to beauty supply store and there was a very large section of Nioxin products. I didn't know where to start. The shelving was floor to ceiling and the line came in four different color schemes, brown bottles, blue, yelllow, shampoo, conditioner, scalp treatments, botles numbered 1 through 3, more and more.....

What is the best product to get??

     Thank you for any feedback!!!!

I used #2, I think - for thinning hair - the shampoo and scalp conditioner, and the follicle booster (2x a day on head and eyebrows).  There are a lot of products!!

revricki - You should use #2 unless you are planning to color your hair, then you should use #3.

revricki - I used Nioxin #2 Cleansing Shampoo, Scalp Conditioner and Scalp Treatment.  To start, you should be able to find a box with all three. When I began using the Herbatint on my hair I switched to #3 because #3 is for color treated hair.

Hey hair thread. I am using some different stuff that nioxin. I use head and shoulders, nexxus conditioner and a scalp treatment by satinque. (sold by amway). Hair seems to growing. The zinc in the head and shoulders is suppose to help the hair. No extras for me until after last chemo which is 13 days away. The scalp treatment seems to help alot. Just using the conditioner to be nice to all the white hair. It is all over the head. Went to town and felt like a baby everyone wanted to rub the hair. Do the white hair change color. I decided that the scalp is like a garden. The white hairs are the weeds and then the dark hair which is coming in stages are the flowers. Get alot of laughs to this comparsion. Have a great hair day and let  to grow grow grow hugs Dianne

lisalisa, I saw in your post that you use Biotin from Whole Foods.  Does it matter what manufacturer or milligrams you take?  I've seen a lot of posts on here that it works and your post definitely caught my eye.  I'm suppose to begin chemo the first week in November and really dreading any hair loss......thanks for the advice.

    Hi Ladies!

I've been visiting this thread trying to figure out something.

To buzz or not to buzz?  That is my question.

I just started chemo (FEC x 6) and am at day 9.  I keep reading that my hair will fall out in clumps around day 15.

Right now it's dry but behaving itself.

I'm ok with having no hair - I have all kinds of hats and wigs at the ready - but I think the falling out in clumps will just piss me off!

Right now my hair is shoulder length and "un-naturally" blonde with natural grey roots (about 1 inch since I didn't want to waste the money on a root dye job).

I've heard that cutting it really short hurts.  That is the sharp ends poke your scalp when you lay on your head.  Now that would just irritate me too not to mention keep my hubby up at night!

Anyone buzz it all off before it fell out?  If so, when?  Did you go Annie Lennox or Telly Savalas?

    Love, love, love the pics!

MarieK... At about 10 days after my first chemo, I had my hair cut to about 1-2" long.  It was kinda nice to see that I didn't look horrendous with very short hair.  Then on day 14, it started coming out... I wouldn't say it came out in "clumps".  It just started thinning out.  Someone said it was kinda like Charlie Brown's Christmas tree when you shook it.  On day 14, I had a friend buzz it with my boys' clippers.  It wasn't painful at all... it was somewhat uncomfortable until the hair completely fell out.  I'm with you... I didn't want to have long strands on my bed, at work, etc... I wanted control over at least that much!

Hi everyone, I finished 4 AC and 12 Taxol 2 weeks ago, still have herceptin every 3 weeks until next July. I have not really seen any new hair growth since I lost most of it. Still have a little bit of the sides and stray hairs here and there on the top, but that has been the same the entire time through. The majority of you seem to be HER2 NEU negative. I am wondering if mine is possibly going to come in slower because I am on the herceptin. Any opinions??

Hi this may have been posted already I didnt go through all of the posts. I am a hair stylist and I always tell my clients who are fixing to start chemo, or finishing, to get Nioxin or go to Sallys Beauty supply and get Nutriox they get the same results but the Nutriox is cheaper. Ive noticed quit a few of them didnt lose all of their hair if they started it a few weeks before they started chemo.

I use the scalp conditioner myself for thinning and dry scalp. I do have to do my color more often because it makes my hair grow faster. I also used this on my second child for cradle cap, cleared it right up.

    Hi MarieK

I had my hair cut very short at around day 12 after my first treatment and around 3 days later, it all came out. I didn't want clumps coming out, but it was still very upsetting when it all came out.

It did hurt a little when it came out, but that didn't last long.

Now, 11 weeks out and it is starting to come back - full circle! Hang in there, with you all the way! Any time, you want to shout, vent, share or anything at all, we are all here to listen.

    Take care, Judy x

Blondie45 - I've read a lot of posts by women saying that they felt Herceptin slowed their hair growth, but once they were done, it was back to normal.  I found a short thread on that topic from 2007 - http://community.breastcancer.org/forum/80/topic/547383?page=1#idx_30

Thanks for the advice ladies!  I booked an appt to have it shaved off on Friday (day 12 for me).  I'm also going to get my wig fitted and trimmed at the same time.

    Happy Hair Growing to everyone!

    Cabmom,

I use Biotin by Jarrow Formulas.  It's a white bottle with yellow label and black cap.

It's 5mg...same as 5000mcg.  On the label it says "energy production skin and hair support".

    I SWEAR by it!

    It also says:

Biotin is a water-soluble B vitamin typically found in liver, egg yolk, cereals, legumes and nuts.  Hope this helps!

I'm week 17 and still need to wear my wig or scarf. The hair is growing very, very slowly and my scalp still shows - every where ...... but there is a little growth. I'm taking lots of Biotin and I think it helps. The onc suggested that the Arimidex slows it down. However, I haven't tried the Nioxin yet so maybe that's my next step. Thanks for the advice.

Hello all. I am back from Hawaii, a married woman. Just want to say thank you to all of you for the congrats. As for my hair, during the wedding......well it is very very humid and hot in Hawaii. That being said, no matter what I did to my hair, the heat and humidity took over. I used combs on the side to hold it back and bought a white flower to put on the side also. So it wasn't the best, but that's ok.....it's hair and I am alive! And on a side note, that heat and humidity is NOT good for hot flashes!

    Many hugs,

    Lori

    Congratulations Lori!!!

MarieK:  I also had mine cut about shoulder length inbetween my first and second TX.  It started coming out on day 15 and by day 17 I could just "pull" out handfuls without and tugging involved!  I shaved my head at that point.  My scalp was tender until all the hair came out, but as soon as I shaved it...the pain dissapeared! Good luck!

     Hugs to all...

    Chris
