Yes, thank you thank you thank you. It was you ladies on this thread that moved me along in my "topless" journey! Yes Linda, glad I had the wig when i needed it, glad I don't need it now!!! :)

My bangs are finally starting to appear, but just a bit. I'll take anything! It's the bangs I feel I really need!

I see curling starting, but ONLY IN THE BACK???? not on top or sides!!! Is that a "pattern"?

My hair started coming out after my 2nd AC. 2 days after to be exact. Handfulls. Went and got a short pixie cut that day!

Jane, I ordered several henna colors so I could experiment. I figure I am going to make potions and mix different colors. lol. it will be fun!!!

    Great pic springtime.

Doesn't it feel great to be topless.  I don't know about everyone else, but I find with these hot flashes a wig is WWWWAAAAYYYY too hot.

Springtime,  I so want bangs!  I miss them so much!  My hair lady told me that you have to use that Biotin shampoo & scalp therapy every time you wash your hair to reap the hair growth benefit out of it.  I didn't know that....

Perhaps you mean the nioxin one? Biotin is a vitamin I think, I take that too! LOL.

I used one bottle of the Nioxin Hiar Folical Stimulator, then thought, do I really want all those chemicals on my head?

    Bangs will come! C'mon Bangs!!!

    Spring.

Spring,,,,,,,,ty for the info about the henna.  I will order some.  Anddddddd your hair looks adorable.  I was never comfortable going wigless until my hair was like 2 inches long.  I so admire those of you that do.  Awesome.

Ok,,,,,,,,so I went to the dematologist yesterday,,,,,,,about my hair being so thin,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and I guess what she would typicallly give ladies,,,,,,,she cant give to those who have had breast cancer.  But she said I could try Rogaine,,,,,,,,only thing about that is you have to keep using it because if you dont,,,,,,the hairs that come in will eventually fall out again.  Then she suggested going to an accupuncturist.  My onc suggested that to me quite some time ago for hot flashes but couldnt find one that was on my insurance plan.  Welllllllllllll it just so happens that my dermatologists sister is an accupuncturist and is on my ins plan.  So I made an appt for this monday.  I guess she has had great success with women with thinning hair regain their hair back and also with hot flashes.  Its worth a shot I thought.  I really know not much about accupuncture,,,,,,,,,,does anyone here know how it all works?  Would love anyones input.

    Hi Ladies,

My chemo ended in December and my hair is now slowly growing in. Slow and patchy and fine. It looks like the fur on the belly of a raccoon. No lie. But at least it is hair and it keeps my head warm.

I broke down and bought a baby brush and comb.  I had to find something to comb/brush my hair with.

Hi Everyone! I'm going to post this as it's own thread for folks, but I know a lot of people check this thread out too.

I have just finished creating an interactive photo gallery of my bc journey as seen by way of my hair! I documented the evolution of my hair growth in weekly photos so that I could share it with all my bc sisters here! It will, hopefully, give you a good idea of what to expect!

    Here's the website:

    Hope you find it helpful!

I finished my 6th and last round of chemo (T/C) yesterday.  So.....tell me what we think of Nioxin?  safe to use?  if so, when can i start it?  how long till these nasty chemo toxins are gone?

would love any advice!!!  i shaved my head a few times during chemo and yet still have about 1/4" of re-growth.  luckily, my hair does grow fast.  but, what to do?  what to do?

    thanks for any advice!

OK, I have to give everyone a warning before viewing DeAnn's photos, it will be very easy to bawl your eyes out.  The photos and the song are beautiful.

DeAnn thank you, it was beautiful, plus, although yours grew MUCH faster, it looks so much like my head it gave me a good idea of what to expect.   Who sang the song?  If I could download it onto my ipod I would, it really hits to the truth of all of this and speaks for us.

I looked in the mirror this morning and laughed so hard, had to show my husband.  I have one eyelash left.  Just hit me as so ridiculous, one sole survivor going up and down, hanging on for dear life.

DeAnn, thank you for sharing your journey. I don't think - no, I KNOW -- that I could not have been courageous enough to take pictures of myself bald. There is one picture of me in my phone that my son took when I wasn't looking but besides that, the only record is me with hats and scarves and my "wiglet."

You have a beautiful family and I love how you made the (sometimes super-human) effort to play with your son.  My son was six when I was dx and I wasn't always successful at being there for him when I was feeling really low, but I always tried.

I smiled at your comment about bed-head and hat hair -- that was an exciting turning point for me, too! It's funny the things that we all can share and appreciate, having been through it, that others can't fully understand. Kmmd, isn't it great when we can laugh at these things?  About 5 months after I finished chemo, when I was sporting a very short, very curly 'do, my son came home with a case of head lice (ewwwww).  All I could think was, why didn't he get this when I was bald, then I wouldn't have had to worry about catching it myself!  You have to find some humor in all of this

DeAnn, I, too, felt like I was becoming myself again as my hair grew back in. You look wonderful and I hope you are feeling equally well. I am home most of this month recovering from a DIEP flap reconstruction surgery -- hopefully the last step in feeling more like myself (not that I wasn't me with one breast, the truth is I didn't think about it much after I got dressed in the morning).

It's interesting, I am almost a year out from chemo and I have a ton of hair now that reaches to the bottom of my neck if I pull on the curls, yet I still check this thread almost every day. Losing my hair was so traumatic, but having others to share the journey with made it more bearable, and for some reason I'm drawn to keeping in touch with those who understand the journey (I realize I keep using this word but I can't think of another that expresses how I feel).

Sending out health and hair vibes to all!!!!!

Thank you all so much for your lovely comments! It was kind of a soul-baring project so I am so relieved to know that you are all enjoying it! That is actually me singing and playing the guitar as well. I'm no professional...only been playing for a few years (I will try to figure out how to make the MP3 accessible). I was inspired to start writing music by a very special little girl. If you go back to my gallery and click on the "Hope and Strength" logo up on the right, you'll be brought to a page where you can view another gallery. That is Julia. She was my inspiration. Her daddy is the one who put together my site for me. I warn you, however, that you will be reduced to blubbering tears if you view it.

    hi everyone,

I finally have enough hair (1 1/2 inches) after 4 1/2 months for it to stick up in all directions.  How do I calm it down?  What is a flat iron and where do I get one?

I am too old for a punk look.

Deann, thank you so much for sharing your site with us!  I love your pictures and the music is awesome!  And I especially love your hair.  I can't wait to have mine styled exactly the same way.  Your hair seemed to grow in so fast though!  I am now 5 weeks out of my last chemo and I don't have nearly the amount of hair that you did.  Was there anything special you did?  Tips, hints, please tell all! :)

    Love, Elaine

Jo anne, a flat iron are those tong-like hair appliances that have two flat plates that smooth the hair into straightness. They're usually available around where they have curling irons and blowdryers.

I remember when I was in high school back in the '60s, straight hair was the fashion. I used to brush my hair out on an ironing board and go over it with a regular iron, pulling the hair gently through as I pressed down with the iron. Great results, but you had to have long hair. It definitely did not work on bangs, lol.

This is the modern adaptation of that process. Much more civilized and controlled, but you can still burn yourself occasionally (watch out for your ears!). They come in different plate widths. Personally, I have more control with a narrower plate, but a wide plate might be more efficient for long hair.

Elaine, My 5 week picture isn't 5 weeks from the end of chemo because my hair actually started to grow back during chemo. But I was doing 12 weeks of Taxol at that point, which made all my eyebrows fall out, but yet the hair on top of my head started to grow at about week 8. Go figure!  If you go 5 weeks out from when I finished the AC combo, I don't think I had any hair at all by that point. My 5 weeks of growth picture is actually 13 weeks after finishing AC.

So don't worry!  Once you reach a certain point, it will seem like it is growing like gangbusters!

Oh, and Jo Anne, you're never too old for the punk look. By the way, a flat iron is just a curling iron that is flat, I think! But I have not used a curling iron for two years, so I'm the wrong person to ask! Good luck with finding a way to tame the sticking up hair. But isn't it nice to have enough hair to have that problem? That's what I keep telling myself whenever I am annoyed with my hair. Laughing

I just finished my last chemo yesterday. Smile I have been going without anything on my bald head throughout most of my treatment. I have a braun shaver that kept the small amount of stubble I have on the top of my head cleaned up. Now that I am done I have a dilemma. Do I cover my head during the regrowth process? Do I keep shaving until I can feel the prickly thicker hairs coming in evenly on my head? Do I just continue to go commando and show everyone the regrowth process? I'm overwhelmed with the choices! Any thoughts or insights?

DeAnn, thank you for that explanation!  I have to tell you, I was sitting here feeling a little disappointed last night thinking my hair wasn't growing fast enough!  I love your short red hair style so much that when mine is long enough, I'm going to print your picture and take it to my hairdresser and tell her to make mine look exactly the same! :)
