I don't know if biotin does much for the hair, but it must be safe because it is in my multivitamin and in my b-complex vitamin.

mumayan, it's difficult to tell if it works or not for hair, but I do give credit to it for strengthening my nails.  From all I've read, it is quite safe.  It's classified as a B vitamin, and also sometimes called Vitamin H.  Google it and you'll find all sorts of credible info -- just avoid sites that advertise products!

I'm going to ask my oncologist about Biotin when I see her on Friday.  I'll get back to you all then!

I'm not finished with my chemo yet, BUT I did talk to my onc at my last tx about hair regrowth.  SHE brought up biotin.  Prior to BC, I had some problems with hair loss when I was going thru stress.  What I found to work the best was taking GNCs "Hair, Skin, and Nail" vitamin for women along with a B multiple vitamin.  The GNC product does have biotin in it.  Here is the link:  http://www.gnc.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3181120

    ~Jan~

Just so there is no confusion... I am an accountant and NOT a GNC representative.  No one in my family works for GNC either.

Lainey, I am with you. It has been 5 weeks for me. My head FEELS like a buzz but you can barely see hair. I have been on Femara for 3 weeks. Maybe one day I will have hair. I have gotten use to the idea that I will have to wear one of my wigs to my daughter's wedding in October! Linda

    Hi ladies,

Just enjoying checking in to see how everyone is doing. I am 5 months post chemo and ditched the wig about a month ago. My hair came in very straight, fine, and gray at first. But thanks to reading your posts I was expecting the kinky curl stage and it is starting. Just wavy so far, but I'm guessing where this is going. I've had the hairdresser dye it twice. Once was at 4 months out when it was only about 1/2" long but I couldn't stand the gray. Then I had it colored again this week. I'm reasonably happy with how it looks - get lots of compliments on my "haircut" which always makes me laugh a bit inside. If people only knew the patience it takes to get this "haircut"!

Isn't it interesting when you get to this discussion board and see how many thousands more visits are to the hair pages than most others? Hair matters in so many ways.

DeeAnn - thanks for sharing your photo story. It is inspiring.

    Diane

I'm going to try my hair "fattening" shampoo tonight.  My hair might as well be as fat as the rest of me.

I am exactly where you are DGHoff. 6 weeks out, some baby fine hair coming in, eyebrows making an appearance, but no eyelashes! I thought maybe they would be the first to come back.

Yesterday I went to a nearby wig salon and was able to choose the wig of my choice, thanks to the Susan G. Korman foundation. I contacted them & asked if they had any programs like the free wig program. She asked me some questions & I qualified. I am so thankful for this. The wig is a Racquel Welsh one & it looks beautiful

Definitely Helen!  That's great that you qualified for the program and were able to find a wig you love.  That is sooo important.  Don't be disappointed if it takes you a bit to get used to it.  I loved my wig too when I first got it but had a love/hate relationship with it for awhile.  There are still days when I can't wait to get it off.

Last night when I went to Curves to do my workout, as I was walking in the ladies noticed my hair growth through the gap in the back of my ballcap.  I got so excited I whipped my hat off and showed them all.  That was the first time I've pulled my hat off while there and it felt really good just to let it all show!  Unsolicited compliments are definitely the best kind!

Helen, thanks for passing that on.  I like giving to and buying from Komen, I think what they give to research and the support they give is great.  Knowing they just helped out a fellow sister on the board makes me even happier.  I just found a local wig bank to donate mine to (never got out of the box--so it and the products are truly new).  I didn't end up wanting it, but am excited to think someone might and it will get some use.

I am taking Biotin because many others here recommended it. My bottle says I can take 5 a day, I usually take 3. My last chemo was 3/13 and I can now touch the end of my hairs and not touch my scalp (if that makes sense). I am 48 and the hair is very dark, I saw posts that said the "first hair growth" was white or translucent, but not for me. I look like I have a very long and dark 5:00 shadow. I am really surprised it grew so fast, but I also just started tamox, so I hope it doesn't slow it down. I wish I had the guts to go commando, but I don't.

I just bought a Raquel Welch wig and though I love the style, I find it itchier than my old wig. I went to Walmart and bought a soft and wide headband that I put on and line the wig up with it so the itchy end seams don't irritate my head.

I am six days away from my last taxotere tx and I have fuzzy white stuff that at first was stiff and wirey to the touch and today I noticed it is soft and curly.  i can't believe all the white hair!  Anybody have that  type of hair growth?? I imagine the white soft fluff will fall out again, but wow it feels great to rub! Wink I 've almost exclusively worn a hat- the wig really gets my scalp itchy and bumpy, even with the padding- and now it is so hot.  I can't wait to go topless.

Well.. I went topless at work today... all day!!  My hair came in multi colored...grey, brown, lt brown, and black. Today I think I might color it all a pretty yellowy blonde....go for the Annie Lennox look. The girls at work just loved rubbing my hair and commenting on how soft it is. They all said it looked very cute, albeit it's only an inch long at best. Well, it's progress and I'll take what I can get. I'm going to a bar tonight with my girlfriends from work, so i am not sure if i will go with or without the wig. I'm thinking without....but hard to hit on cuties when you're bald.. hahahah.

jrgolomb....my soft white fluff did not fall out, ever. It just grew and grew and filled in with real hair til i could hardly even notice the flufff any more.

Ugh! I need to learn how to take pics them put them on my computer first!

    kmmd:

I want everyone to know who was kind & generous to me with the wigs. I know so many people who do donate to Komen & when I tell them they gave me a new wig, they are thrilled too!

Jess, I've heard some say the grey/white stayed around as a somewhat "frosted tip" to the new growth, in my case it grew fast, stayed there and the rest of the hair caught up.  You are about 9 weeks ahead of where I was at that point.

Smile, during treatment I buzzed down a couple of times to even things out, looked too scraggly.  When treatment stopped I decided to hold out and see what happened.  At about 8 weeks I had several different sizes of sprouts and thought I'd wait and buzz to an even length just before a big event I have in a couple of weeks.  All of a sudden the last few days its all evening out, like the long hairs waited for the short to catch up or something.  So, for now I'm sitting tight and letting it do its own thing, it seems to know what its doing better then I do.  Of course my hair has ALWAYS had a mind of its own.  I will say that part of the rapid growth right now I wonder if it would have happened if I'd been on Tamox.  I was due to start, then needed to hold for surgery.  So, I've had a few extra weeks of letting it grow that normally may have been getting hit by the Tamox

Stacy, good for you!  Did you go out last night with or without the wig?

Yesterday was a big day for me as well.  I took my wig off at work for the first time so everyone could see my new hair.  It was so scary at first but then I realized that it really was ok.  There were touching it too and making really positive comments about it.  When I got home from work I was changing to take my dog outside for a walk and couldn't bear the thought of putting a hat on.  It was so hot here!  So I went outside topless for the first time.  I felt liberated.  My boyfriend came home and I told him I wanted to go out to dinner.  And we went and guess what?  I went topless!  I know I got some stares but I was strong and didn't care.  I think I finally finally my "new" me through all this.

Lainey..I did wear a baseball cap to the bar last night. My girlfriends told me to take it off, but i really didn't want to make anyone uncomfortable. We did end up chatting it up with some very cute 25 yr old guys who felt that my hat was unncessary, but I still kept it on.  congrats on going out to dinner topless. I just don't know if I'm quite brave enough just yet. We'll see, maybe once i color it a single matching color i will feel like doing that.

Lainey, congratulations on going topless!  I feel that going about bareheaded is a declaration that I am OK with WHO I AM and CONFIDENT that the hair loss from chemo shows MY STRENGTH to face whatever live gives me with MY HEAD HELD HIGH!

Hi ladies.  Ok I went to get accupuncture last Monday.  And had another one yesterday.  She says that she has had great success with her patients that have hair thinning due to chemo or stress or whatever.  So we will see. She works in conjunction with several MD's.  She is also treating me for hot flashes (which I have to say,,,,,have gone down quite a bit in only two treatments) and also for this darn excess weight that has been bugginnnnnnnn me.  I do notice that I eat less,,,,,,,and last night I seemed to sleep better (which I have been having a hard time with the sleeping because of the hot flashes and I am an internal worry wart, lol)  Its all pretty interesting though.  After the treatments I had such a feeling of calm.  She kinda explained it like this,,,,,,,,,,our bodies have been thru so much that our system is out of whack,,,,,,,,and needs to get back in order.  Get that blood flowing again, help with our red and white counts.  Like a tree,,,,,,,,we cant just rub the leaves and expect the whole tree to look pretty and healthy,,,,,,,,we need to work from within the core of the tree.  This is all very new to me and sometimes a bit overwhelming,,,,,,but I figured if my onc suggested it for hot flashes and my dermatologist for hair,,,,,,,,,,,,there has to be something to it huh?

Of course I would like to wake up one day looking like a chia pet.  The hair is so thin on top that I felt I was almost gonna have to do the Donald Trump combover.  lol  Not sure how many treatment I will be having but I'll keep you posted.

Question?   what is the hair fattening stuff?

Have a good weekend and love reading all of your posts ladies.

Congrats to those of you going topless.   I sooooooo admire those of you that can.  I could just never get myself to that place,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,so a huge kudos to you ladies.

    Cindy

DD and I went and had pedis and manis yesterday.  We had both also planned on having our brows waxed, so I askd the lady if there was anything sh could do about the fuzz on my cheecks.  I pretty much had a whole-face wax!  She did my brows, upper lip and both cheeks.  The only thing that didn't need to be waxed was my forehead and chin!  If my head hair grew as fast as my leg hair, I'd be able to braid it by now!  I think I might have my legs waxed next time.  DD wants to have her pits waxed - that sounds painful.  So far, I only have hair growing on one pit.  With the extent of my scar, I'm not sure it will grow on the other side.

Seeing so many going topless, that is wonderful.

Caligrl, you wear that cap as long as you want. You willl decide when you are ready to go with out and not anybody else.

Cinrae, I went for acupuncture for the hot flashes. It didn't do anything for me Frown. I hope you continue to see results and you also get some with the hair. My hair used to be rather thin, it looked thick just becuz it was wavy. Now, I think it is thicker, and OMG, soooooo curly. It is probbably 3-4 inches long, but only looks like an inch becuz so curly. I will ad to my hair journey pic within the next week and post it.

Facial Hair - Leave it alone, it will eventually go away on its own. At least mine did. I was too affraid to shave it. Private areas came back thick, coarse and dark, that too went away and returned to normal.
