Susan, I have one spot on the top of my head that is a little bald. It's driving me crazy. So I take extra care when applying my follicle booster and pay extra attention to that area. Do you think you might be more comfortable is you cut your hair down to make it more uniform? I know the idea of cutting off your newly grown hair doesn't sound good, but you might be more confident going out in public if it's all trimmed an even. You could put some product on it and spike it up cute like Vino's.
Janet, hi there. Yes, I was born in '64 and will turn 45 next month. I will send you a PM!

About the Rogaine,,,,,,,,,,,,my dermatologist suggested using Rogaine for Men. Keep in mind though that the hairs will come back but when you stop using it,,,,,they will fall out again. I have started accupuncture for hair thinning. Ive done 3 treatments so far,,,,,,,,and now I go back once a week. Also doing accupuncture for hot flashes and weight. Will let you know if I see new hair.

Cindy,
Let us know if it helps the hot flashes and weight also! I would surely be willing to try it.

Cinrae, does insurance pay for your acupuncture? Linda

I will let u know for sure. My first accu was a week ago, My hot flashes have decreased. They havent gone away all together but having less than before. I dont feel as hungry either. So we will see. Yes,,,,,,,my insurance covers accupuncture. And she is on my EPO plan too so my co pay is only $15. I figured it was worth a shot. Will keep you all informed.

Cinrae, I want to know more too. HAve been wondering about acupuncture.
Do they do the arm where you had nodes out? I wondered about that too, if it would be "safe".

Spring I would be terrified that we might induce LE with accupuncture. They still don't really know why some of us get it and others don't.aybe I'm just paranoid.

Hi Susan 13, My hair is growing back super thin on top and thicker around the sides. My dermatologist had warned me about this before I started chemo. He said I could use Rogaine (or generic version of topical minoxidil) and recommended to use the 2% topical solution and NOT the 5% as that might be more likely to cause hair growth in places I didn't want it.
Like Springtime, however, I don't want extra chemicals on/in my body right now. My sister's friend buzzed the initial uneven hair growth down a bit and it seems to be growing in a little thicker all over now, or at least that's my story. I still can't go out without a wig or hat... Hopefully more will grow soon.

PrincessKauai-My hair is doing exactly what yours is doing. And what hair there is on the top and sides is long, well to me long 1 - 2"! but very thin. I'm going to give it to June, then I will be 3 months out of chemo, if it's the same I'll buzz it a little to make it more even. I would be weary too about putting chemicals on my scalp right now.

I went to the oncology center yesterday "topless" and I swear I got more stares there than I do at restaurants, etc. I wore sunglasses and held my head proud. I was the picture of cool and confidence but on the inside I was scared to death! My doc and pharmacist saw me and rubbed my fuzzy head. I told them I was using Nioxin follicle booster and my rads onc just shook his head. He said the only thing that's gonna work is "time". I didn't like that comment!

Ok....does anyone notice facial hair as the hair on your head grows back?
I'm blond, so its very faint, but I swear I have tiny little almost invisible hairs on the sides of my face. ACK! I only noticed them when the sunlight hit my bathroom mirror.
Am I alone in this? Will it go away?

Will any of you ladies share names of web sites that you have had good experiences with on ordering wigs? Your thoughts on synthetic wigs versus some called monofilament (might be spelled wrong). Any other kind that is better for Texas summer heat?
I'm jumping into this post for a dear friend who was diagnosed with Stage IV Inflammatory Breast Cancer about 3 weeks ago. She will be doing this herself in time, but for right now she is just trying to adjust to everything but knows that I am using this site for information. Thanks a bunch.

I don't have insurance. But am enrolled in a federal program funded by medicaid. So it will run out in a year & I have to pay for my meds then. Soooo, I did a bunch of research & am getting 4 wigs for free.
The American Cancer Society gives wigs, turbans & head coverings for free. Call for your local chapter.
Susan G. Koman also supplies a free wig. They said to give them my closet wig salon & they called them, gave them a dollar amount & I came home with a beautiful wig.
Another foundation, crickettsanswerforcancer.org is a wonderful organization started by a mother who lost her grown daughter to BC. She has offered my 3 websites to visit to choose a wig. I choose Paula Young Wigs. They have a special right now...buy one get one free on certain wigs. So I am getting 2 free wigs for the price of one....for free!
Also franceluxe.com will donate a beautiful headcovering for cancer patients. They sent mine & it's beautiful.

Dear HelenNC,
You've done an amazing job at checking your resources!
I just checked out the Paula Young Wigs and found the special you are talking about. I'll be checking out the other sites as soon as I post this reply to you. I'm going to see my friend early tomorrow morning and will have lots to tell her. Thanks so much.

That is so cool that you are able to get some free wigs and all. Very awesome indeed. I was told at the wig shop when I got mine,,,,,,,that real hair is very hard to manage,,,,,,and the synthetic ones were actually better. I had a synthetic one with the monofilament top (which means there is a nylon see thru monofilament panel on the top and if the wig is styled with a part,,,,,you cant even tell its a wig because you can see your own scalp thru the panel.) I got mine at a wig shop,,,,,,,and totally loved it. I got so many compliments on my hair,,,,,,people didnt even realize it was a wig,,,,,,they just thought I had gotten it highlighted and cut. lol The synthentic ones are already styled and never lose their shape or style. Soooooooo easy. I washed mine like once a week and just put it on one of those wig stands,,,,,,,,,,it dried super fast,,,,,,and I was good to go. Just be careful with the synthetic ones,,,,,,,,,cause if you like open up the oven make sure your head is away from that heat. Ive heard that some people have actually singed the hairs and they got like fuzzy.
Love,,,,,,,tell your friend she will be fine. She will get thru this journey,,,,,,,and before she knows it,,,,,,,it will be a distant memory. Tell her to find a thread on this site or start one up herself for others going thru treatment the same time as her. It was such a blessing for me during my treatment.

Thanks lovemyfriend. It takes alot of time, but because of my situation, I have to save money where I can. I just warms my heart that there are many out there who offer so much to those of us in need.

cinrae123 - I am one of those women who opened the oven door and singed her wig......twice. My bangs were fuzzy after that. No way to repair it. Alway remove your synthetic wigs when cooking.LOL.

This is a great bunch of information. It's so nice to have the "don't do's" ahead of time.
I have told my friend that when she is ready to get on these boards herself, she will find a wealth of information, humor, compassion, and encouragement from the bravest, most courageous women in the world. My admiration goes to all of you!

LisaLisa: Yes, hair does seem to grow on the face while head hair is coming in, and, even with us brunettes, the facial hair is fine and blond. If it really bothers you, it's okay to shave it. And don't worry, you won't have any dark stubble! It might slowly grow back (mine did, so I've shaved it twice within the last 6 or 7 months). But I promise you WON'T HAVE ANY STUBBLE!!!
Cheers! Linda

I swear my facial hair is the only hair that is growing on me and I am 6 months out of chemo.AAARRRGGGG

Lainey, It seemed to me the Nioxin worked, my ONC and the Nurse Practitioner thought I had more hair growth (at that time) than others, so maybe it worked? Who knows. The massaging it in can't hurt either!
Lisa, I had this fine grown on sides of my face too. It seems to be wearing off (?) over time? I did not shave or pluck it. It was very fine and clear. Hopefully not noticable!!!

I'm not having an issue with facial hair yet. I have a little peach fuzz but that's normal for me. I am wigless at work today! It's hot and muggy here because of the rain and all I could manage was a scarf this morning. After I got to the office I ripped it off my head and I feel sooo much better. I'm gonna use the nioxin products til they're gone!

Everyminute. I love your hair. I'm 6 months out from chemo and my hair is probably an inch long and curly most days. Have had one trim to get it evened up. My hairstylist said it helps hair growth when you get your blood moving. So another good reason to exercise. Also giving your head a good massage everyday will help. Both are easy enough to do. I'm also using Nioxin. She said she'd hear that is a good product.
I love having some hair again. lol.

LisaLisa - forgot to ask my oncologist about the Biotin - can't help that chemo fog is really screwing me up and I keep forgetting to ask questions. I was told to not exceed the daily recommendation of Vitamin B and Vitamin C but the Biotin I have does not have any vitamin B in it but it did say on the bottle to take in conjunction with Vitamin B - so now I am really confused as to whether or not I can start taking it.
I just finished Taxol treatment #2 and have 2 more to go. I am noticing new hair on my legs and just a little bit down south. Also have new growth on the sides of my scalp.
I know this was discussed many many pages ago but I am using Mane & Tail shampoo and conditioner even now. I used it years ago and my hair got way too thick. I have also used it on my mare (deceased 4 years ago) and she had the nicest tail of all of the horses in the barn - so long it was touching the ground and I had to trim it constantly and so very thick.
I will say this, the product has become popular in the last 5 years as you can buy it at most grocery stores in the regular shampoo aisle, they wouldn't sell it there if it were not safe for humans. I tried the more expensive shampoos on my horse and they failed to produce the same results. You can get a HUGE bottle of it at Target for around $6 for 32 oz. That sure has got to be a heck of a lot cheaper than buying Nioxin - but whatever anyone feels like using - it is all a matter of personal choice. I have been using Mane and Tail for about 2 weeks now and I am noticing hair growth even though I am still doing chemo and more hair growth than I thought I would have at this time.
