I've been trying to find the perfect product to use to get the messy/spikey look, and am having no luck. I've tried Redken 18 wax (returned it), Crew fiber (stuff for guys, didn't hold, gave it to my husband), Redken 5 paste (it was a sample size so I kept that, but it still didn't hold well) and Got 2 Be Defiant pomade (I like this the best so far). Today I bought Got 2 Be Glued spiking gel, but it says to use on damp hair. My hair is very curly (it was before chemo, this isn't chemo curl) and if I put anything in it while it's wet, it curls all the more. I've been drying the 2 inches I have with a bristle brush, using a 1/2 inch straightener on it, then trying to spike parts of it with the pomade--and it still doesn't give me the look I want. Has anyone used the Glued spiking gel on dry hair? Any other products you can recommend? It looks like it's going to be this length for a while -- I'm on Herceptin still and I feel like it's almost stopped growing. Thanks, ladies!

Kristin, I use Got2B Glued spiking gel, even on dry hair, and it works OK. I've tried a lot of products and the G2BG and Wired, which someone mentioned a few pages back, are my favorites. I'm almost 11 months PFC with hair that came in curly and gray. I've had it colored and trimmed 3 times. It's still not covering my ears, and I developed a cowlick on top, which pushes my hair on my crown straight up. (Picture Kramer from "Seinfeld!) My hairdresser admitted I was going through an "awkward phase." As much as I dislike the curls, the last time I was there, her assistant blow-dried (blew-dried??) my hair for a smooth look, and it was horrible -- helmet hair!

hi ladies & happy new year to all! so good see familiar names & new ones too it's been several months since i posted but recently started logging in again. between my exchange surgery in September, the holidays, a 2nd break-up [why i ever took him back i will not know!!] & work drama - i suffered a lot anxiety & depression. feeling better now & so happy to have 2012 in the rear view mirror... love seeing all the pics of the beautiful hair growth we all have desired from the minute we lost it due to f'ing chemo!!
juneaubugg - i relate to your fustration so well!! my last chemo was march 22, 2012 & you're hair is growth is about at the same stage i was at 12wks. mine is now a little less than 1/2" past the bottom of my earlobes. it's MUCH thicker [it was thick before] than pre-chemo & there seems to much more of it so that is a relief!! some parts are shorter near the crown but for the most part i can say i'm finally sporting a Bob style & way past a Pixie.
can't wait until it's chin length so i look more like ME again.
take care all & happy weekend!!

KristinFro. . . I found a product at Walgreen's. It's called FX Molding Wax, Pliable Hair Wax. It's in a grey jar with a green lid. It works better for me than Got2B Glued. It actually leaves a softer feel and lasts all day.

Thank you, Wavewhisper and SLKsMom! I've not heard of Wired or the FX Molding Wax. I'll check them out next time I'm at Walgreen's. I'll also give the G2B Glue a go for the next few days and see how it works.

I didn't get the Be Curly because the stylist talked me out of it with my hair this short. I got some soft styling wax instead. It did make curls instead of frizz.

Kristin, I'm ten months PFC and I had given up months ago trying to straighten my hair. But I can finally now straighten it with a straightener. Then I have the helmet head. So after I straighten it, I take about an inch bead of got 2 b glued and rub it into my hands and then work it into my hair and style it with my fingers. If it curls, I just run the straightener over it. it's working much better than putting a glob on wet hair. Good luck!

patriciahurtado: yes I am pretty sure you can take biotin now. Just confirm with your MO.
All: those are indeed my lashes. Telling you ... Buy the Brian Joseph's. it's pricy but I'm just finishing my first tube. Wish I had known to use if before they fell out, but seeing as I had them through AC I did t think they fall out AFTER. but hey, I should stop expecting anything with this disease huh?
Kj: good to know in not the only one growing in straight, thick and yes SOFT SOFT SOFT! Like a baby's hair!!! I like to pet myself. Lol. Friends ask to feel it all the time too. As for that crazy middle stage I'll be in For months....fuck it is what I say. I went topless about five weeks PFC. I don't care anymore. I'm a survivor. This is who I am now. Let the world SEE. I'm alive and to me that makes me just beautiful no matter how my hair looks. It's on top of my head, and as my mother says.... I'm grateful to be on the right side of the grass today!
Per my beautiful necklace. My DH picked put for me at my friends Aunts shop when we visited his inlaws this summer when I was just a week out of my 3rd AC. it was. A tough trip for me. Anyway, if you're ever in Wilmington NC, it's a small shopping the Cotton Exchange in downtown. It's the last shop downstairs on the left when you enter the marketplace. They have beautiful jewelry. And this piece was inexpensive too. Only $60. If you're ever near its worth stopping in.0 -
FYI I took biotin all the way through chemo since I had been taking it for years. My onc didn't want me to start anything new but for the most part let me take all the supplements I had been taking: Multivitamin, biotin, D3, Calcium, Acidophilus. Only thing I stopped on chemo (then restarted when chemo ended) was Minoxidil. Just a waste of money to use that when on Taxotere.
BUT do check with your onc. Everyone is different, has different medical conditions, on different drugs and chemo.

Kristen- got2bglued is the best and definitely works - you can leave some curly and straighten where you want - i also rub it into my hands and then all over wet hair. its been a lifesaver and god knows I could open a gel store from my bathroom with all the products I've bought and tried ...lol I also like the wired, but I put that on before the glue and it gives a good shine.

Thanks, herstrong! I think I'm going to try it that way as well.
AEM, so you use the Glued on just wet hair? I may have to try that as well just to see what kind of result I get. I can always wash it out and start over again if I end up looking like a poodle with all my curls! Thanks!

Hi everyone,
Just finished my taxol treatments 2 weeks ago. Hair started coming in during Taxol. I had it shaped on New Year's eve. Did not need it but I wanted it shaped up. It's so white and looks like sproats everywhere. I still hav ethe reptilian eyelids and no brows. I might have a few lashes. Oh well it's definately interesting. LOL

Mareluna, I am about one week ahead of you (finished Taxol 3 weeks ago) and also sporting weird grayish Taxol hair, no brows, and about six pale lashes per eye. I've been tempted to take the clippers to it just to get it even, but I just barely have scalp coverage (well not quite) and am reluctant to shorten it until I do. How did you get yours shaped?

Can anyone tell me how many months pfc you were when you could finally get a decent looking pony tail that was more than a tiny stub? Does it take a year & a half? 2 years?
0 -
shore I think it was about a year for me. I don't really wear pony tails unless I am working out so not 100% sure. I tend to like my hair free and in my eyes now.

Isn't that a wonderful feeling... I know just what you mean...

Just made an appt. for next week for my 5th haircut, 7 months PFC!

So I got it cut and colored again last week and had a fabulous time in Vegas! LeeA - my DH and I had no problem eating while there! I couldn't get over the amount of fabulous restaurants! TheDivineMrsM - we were only there for 3 days and have decided that we will be going back to see what we missed this time. Did you do a helicopter tour of the canyon or bus? I will be saving up toward the helicopter ride, looks like so much fun. We did ride the roller coaster at New York New York and went to the top of the Eiffel Tower and Stratosphere. Can't wait to go back!

Kellogg... we are going in March.. What hotel did you stay at and were you happy with it? We want to stay somewhere in the middle of the strip so we can walk either way.. not really in to gambling.. just want to see what its all about
0 -
Ossa - we stayed at the Las Vegas Hotel & Casino which was about a block off the strip at the end. Next time we will stay downtown. I would recommend New York New York or Paris, or if you can afford a little more the Cosmopolitan is newer and absolutely beautiful! A lady I work with stays at Harrah's on her twice yearly trips. All four of them are pretty much in the middle of the strip. We rode the Monorail to the strip and walked so it wasn't too inconvenient. What I noticed with some of the older casinos/resorts is that they smell like stale smoke...yuk! You will have a blast, so much to see and do. I can't wait to go back! Let me know how your trip goes!

I am 21 weeks PFC and my eyelashes and eyebrows have started to shed over the last couple weeks. I hope they don't all fall out just thin or at least do it over a longer period to ensure better randomizing for the next cycle. I was really enjoying mascara and was putting a little color on the brows also.
I had a trim and color -nonpermanent dye at 17 weeks PFC am going to have it colored again in two weeks, I really don't want to trim it again, although it is a layered mess. I'm sure my hairdresser will want to trim it but I just feel like I can't lose any length right now.
What amazes me is that some of the hair started to grow in seven months ago while on Taxol and some of it is just starting to grow in now and everything in between-a truly layered look.
I'm still wearing my wig outside although not inside at all. It's very odd that I get lots of compliments from people who don't typically notice things, about my (wig) hair, so expect to get a lot of comments about my real hair which is not as shiny, beautifully colored or styled. I don't feel ready for all the why did you cut your hair I liked it so much better before type of comments.
In the looking around I noticed that actually most people's hair doesn't look very good. It typically doesn't look healthy or cut well which is maybe why the perfectly coiffed wig attracts so much many compliments.
Once I get over the initial shock and questions from people I think it's going to be a great relief to no longer worry about throwing on the wig to take out the garbage etc.0 -

Wow, Nkb, that makes perfect sense.

Kelloggs, sounds like you had a great trip! The monorail is a great way to get around - we used it quite a bit the last time we were there.

A nurse at my BS's office mentioned that she used to care for cancer patients and one of her patients had great success with garlic shampoo and hair loss (or lack of hair loss). I have no idea what kind of cancer this woman had and I may have already mentioned it on this thread so sorry if it's a repeat!

it's been a long time since i posted here, though i have been keeping up with your journeys. it was an odd year. i finished rads in april, was "discharged" as an oncology patient in june, and spent some time during the summer doing some traveling and trying to be "normal" again.
then my dad's problems started. chemo for mets from prostate cancer... they didn't know where. he was doing pretty well on it until he wasn't, and long story short, he passed away in december. the death certificate doesn't reflect that his was a cancer death and i worry that his overall treatment will be deemed a success when they gather the stats for 2012. instead, it will be a cardiac stat. i wonder how many others get off the books that way.
anyway, i wanted to share my hair journey because i know how very much i was inspired by all the beautiful ladies that posted before. i would have felt so very frustrated and dejected had i not been able to come here and see pictures. i called them my hope and inspiration.
i hope everyone is doing well and that the new year is full of growth and happiness!
love and peace...0 -
Frankenboobs, so sorry for your loss. Tough thing to go through at anytime, losing a parent. Has to be especially hard after the year you had yourself.
You look great - thanks for posting your pics.0 -
Thanks for the advice on coloring. I was so sick of my wig last Friday that I made an appointment with an organic hair salon. So glad I did! The stylists were very helpful and understanding. I like the organic dye, don't think I will ever go back to ammonia based product. We did a few snips to even things up. I am 4 1/2 months PFC and have most of my growth on top and back. The sides of my head are still pretty thin and my right side was shorter than my left.
I went wigless to work on Monday and it feels great! The chemo curls are challenging. Does anyone know if they are temporary or do most women end up with permanent curly hair?
I changed by profile pic to show my new "do". I know it will take a long time to grow out but am so glad to have hair!

thank you, shore. it's been a tough year but i'm still here to fight another day.
hikergal, i had an awful time with chemo curls! in september i had an inch cut off the top, back and sides because it seemed that my hair was straight except for the curly ends. in december i had a little trimmed off the bottom for the same reason but it seems that the curl there is a little deeper than it was every place else. now i have to use a straightening iron on just those parts so it matches the rest. i know some women have to deal with the curls for years, and some, forever. i'm pleased to say that for the most part mine has returned to near normal.
i can't see your profile pic very clearly but from here your hair looks great!

Frankenboob, what a great timeline of hair photos...love your current hair color. Hikergal, Junebug, Kristen, your hair regrowth looks wonderful as well.
I always love hearing when one of us decides to go wigless while the hair is still supershort; that's what I did and it was so liberating. I look back at photos from that time, and I can see a certain light in my eyes, a certain strength because I was moving forward. I do live in a community where I felt support for what I was going through, and everyone seemed to take it in stride, which helped a good deal.
