My hair is growing in a faux hawk. No chemo curl for me, it is stick straight like before chemo. I'm 3 1/2 months out. Not needing a trim yet but its starting to get messy when I get up in the morning, etc.

Hello ladies,  Congrats to all of you with amazing hair growth.  You look terrific!

My last chemo was July 24 - so I'm 13 weeks PFC and my growth is now at a standstill.  It was growing at an incredible 1/4" per week, but has not grown any since it was measured on Oct 2.  What's with that!!  It's about 1 3/4" on the sides and nape of neck and 1 1/2" on the top.  Did anyone else experience a rapid growth and then a slow down?  And if so, how long did the slow down last?

Also, lots of it is white tipped as the top quarter of it is white and the rest of it my normal color (as near as I can remember).  I am no where near feeling comfortable going out without a cap or my wig.

When it is long enough to go topless, I think I will color it, as I don't like this new salt & pepper look.  I asked my MO if it was OK - permanent or semi permanent hair color both fine.  Also, before my hair was straight as can be.  Now it kind of waves a bit in front near my hairline and seems straighter elsewhere.  So weird. I'm grateful to have hair, but long for my former hair.

MomMom, your last treatment was one week after mine (mine was July 17) but your hair is about 1/2 longer than mine. It *might* be an inch on the top and is uniform all over my head.

My  hair pre chemo was dark brunette, almost black. Now it is salt and pepper. I've decided not to color it. I have several friends with S&P hair and they are slaves to keeping their roots covered! I'm just going to embrace the grays. I earned them. LOL

I never wore head coverings even when bald. I felt the oddest when my  white pin-feathers started coming in. LOL Mine HAS come in significantly thicker than it was before chemo. I'm so thankful for that!

so this is what is happening on top of my head, lol! It can't get any longer if it just keeps curling up in perfect little curlicue circles. This is after just air drying and not touching it after a shower. Sometimes I fluff it up some but then I get the fuzzy q-tip look. Someone asked me recently how I got those perfect curls. She thought maybe I pin curled it. It's crazy how it grows this way right out of my head, haha. I like it about 50% of the time. It is easy though. People pay for this I'm often toldHappy (6months post chemo btw)

Lisa, I think your curls are adorable, and you're right, they look exactly like pin curls made from criss crossed bobby pins.  I used to section off my grandmother's hair into bobby pin curls - brought back some memories:-)!

I just tried to email myself photo of my hair as it looks now and for some reason, I'm not getting these pics so I can download on my pc.  If I get it, will post it.  My daughter thinks it looks chic.  I think it looks kind of weird - especially with the white wispy ends sticking up on top (dark roots).  I do wonder why it was growing so fast and has come to a standstill for the past 3 weeks!!

    Lisa,

    I love your curls.

Mine wants to start a wave on ends side and back, but top is straight.  If I comb out waves, it gets fuzzy. I may buy a bunch of bobby pins and try to pincurl it and see how it looks.

    Take care all

OK, here's my hair now.  No eye make up yet as I still have clogged tear ducts (2 1/2 months now) which was an after effect from Taxol.  Went to the top opthalmologist "in the country"  (according to my own opthamologist) at Johns Hopkins today, so have high hopes that it will resolve without surgery.

mommom, love the hair, smile, earrings, lipstick, pretty blue eyes. You look awesome. Very hip! Very Cool with the dark roots and light tips. If you get just a teeny trim to get rid of the wispy ends it might look even more awesome. (I mean that in the best way). At least you've got dark roots, not like my gray with dark center strip. So pretty

Ya see...do I want to look adorable?! Oh well, it's fun

Lisa - love the curls.  MomMom - yes I remember the crossed bobby pins to make those kind of curls.  My Mother did that.  My grandmother actually used pieces of tissue paper & straight pins to set the curls.  ouch!  I have more waves than curls at 3 inches.  The ends turn up or out or crosswise, but lots of conflicting directions.

Hi Girls,  know some of you are using minoxidil to assist hair growth.  Just wondering what strength you are using & can you commence when still having chemo & Herceptin.

    Thanks

    ps love the pics xx

Awww, you guys are the best.  Even when we don't feel the best about ourselves, no one can understand what we've lost and what we've gained like a fellow BC sister. I think I'm still not there going topless for other than family, but without all of you sharing your hair stories it would be so discouraging.  Your positivity is inspiring.  Thank you.

Greta- your from SA!   God I miss living in OZ!

I used Lattise for my lashes; It worked beautifully!   I only used Nioxin on my scalp and my hair came ( is coming!) nicely.  I honestly don't know if it was the Nioxin or not, tho.  But with all this forehead I'm considering Botox!

Gretta I use women's 2% although I see the Rogain company now has a 5% for women. I used this before diagnosis and stopped during chemo…no need to waste money. Started a few weeks PFC.   (I also brush it on my eyebrows but be sure not to get it in your eyes)

    Hi Ladies,

I love how your hair has grown in!  Hey we will be the new "silver blondes".  My neighbor was a hairdresser in NYC. He said natural gray hair or salt and pepper looks beautiful when it is cut short.  Well, that's what I'm doing. I don't want to be a slave to the hairdresser anymore getting my roots colored every 5-6 weeks.  Plus, I don't want to subject myself to the chemicals anymore. I'd rather buy a piece of clothing with the extra money! LOL

I am a little over 2 months PFC. I cut the long stragglers and it looks much better.  However, as my hair continues to grow, the stragglers are following.  Will need a little trim next week.  I'm still hoping I can go topless to my uncle's 80th birthday.  Even though I never lost my eyebrows fully, they did thin out.  They have now filled in fully.  I will need a waxing before the party.  I was so surprised about a month ago when I tried putting on mascara.  It went all over my eyelids - UGH.  Never realized that I lost some of my eyelashes.  They have caught up nicely too.  Looking forward to putting on mascara for the party, too.

    Have a beautiful day!

    Hugs

    Marie

Lisa there is a book called The Curly Girl  Handbook that several friends have recommended (particularly my fellow adoptive parents who adopted biracial kids and have no clue to care for their hair!) Here's a link to it. Apparently with curly hair "Its not what you take off, its what you leave on" is a motto to live by. Happy

MomMom, all my kids have had had their tear ducts probed and/or stents put in for a more long-term problem. Other than some bruising its not too bad!

Gretta, I was in a study for Rogain several years ago. It was an attempt to get 5% for women approved.

Men have better growth with 5% and minimal growth at 2%.

But women showed no difference in growth between the 2% and 5%, so they could not approve the 5% for women. But here IS the difference: 2% should be used twice per day on clean, dry hair. 5% for men is just a once per day application. You can use that and get the same growth you would with the 2% twice per day.

Having been in the study I know what I respond to. I am using the 2% twice per day. It is $40 for a three months supply at Target. I started using it two weeks after my last chemo. My hair has come in THICK THICK THICK! So far no evidence of the female pattern baldness I had before surgery.

I am also using a product called Hair Surge Shampoo

    http://www.amazon.com/Ultrax-Caffeine-Growth-Stimulating-Shampoo/dp/B007SZCG0C/ref=sr_1_1?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1414505983&sr=1-1&keywords=hair+surge

and its complimentary conditioner Hair Solace

    http://www.amazon.com/Ultrax-Solace-Caffeine-Stimu...

Who knows if my good regrowth is related to the chemo, rogain, or hair surge, of if the combination is the key? No way to know I guess! Its working well for me so I'll stick with it. However, I think once I'm through with the hair surge I will change to a different shampooing product. It seems to be great for growth, and I have that, but now that my hair is just a little over one inch long I feel like I need something that will be better for the ends and general hair care.

Noon rider, Good to hear - thank you!!  I've already had two very painful sessions with an opth. plastic surgeon who stuck needles in my eyes and told me they looked "fried" from the chemo.  Ugh.  This doc I saw yesterday was very kind and volunteered if I need the surgery there would be general anesthesia.  Did any of your kids need the DCR surgery?

Lago! The 5% for women must have just come out! I just restocked my Rogain last week and didn't see it. I haven't open the box yet so I can still return it! Yay! I wonder if they changed the formula from the previous study I was in.

MomMom, yes all of them have had it. Two of the kids had stents put in, which stay in place for 3-4 months. (ok, one kid pulled his out after 48 hours. LOL)

My eyes watered SO BADLY after chemo, especially my last round. My ducts were not blocked, just couldn't keep up with the watering. I always had tears streaming down my face. It calmed down about 8 weeks after my last round.

MomMom, you look beautiful!  You have a gorgeous smile.  About the waves, since you had straight hair, they will relax most likely, as your hair grows.  My hair was the curliest when short, but now I have long waves.   Do you think you will color it or go natural?

jbokland, you have the exact hairstyle as the Chico's model, and your hair color looks better than the blond.

omg, me too. Still have a picture of her on my kitchen counter. It was my inspiration even though I'm curly and gray, that really short look is great and stylish. I would definitely go there if mine was straight

noonrider, I know that book! Have been using curly hair techniques for years and was trying to grow my curly hair a little longer before, it takes so long for curly hair. There's a salon in  nyc (also some other cities) that specializes in curly hair, devashaun salon. Went with my sister a few years ago and had a cut using the curly hair techniques and they also spent a lot of time teaching you how to style and care for your curly hair (keeping it curly). Expensive but good for s special treat for ourselves. Curly hair girls should use a sulfate free shampoo (no suds) because sulfates dries hair out, and not wash everyday, and leave in some conditioner, and not comb or brush just finger dry. My hair is actually curlier now and the white/gray is so different but I don't want to be a slave to coloring anymore and hating the roots after just a few weeks.

It's just when people see me now they know something's up and now I'm always going to have a before and after time line in my photos as we all do

Gretta  Latisse is prescription only (at least in the US) and not covered my insurance. Most get it from their dermatologist or plastic surgeons. It is made by Allergan, who also makes breast implants, Botox, etc.
