    hi seq24

Thanks for that, I think I have seen the Roux colour alright, might give it a try. Did you find your scalp looked stained from the mousse or did it wash off straight away. Thanks!

Since my hair has been growing back I have been experimenting with temporary fun colors in it like pink or blue r purple. These are colors that only last the day but make me and others smile.

Hopeful--The Roux did not stain my scalp at all and everything washed away when I shampooed. It did however stain my hands somewhat but it says in the instructions to wear gloves when applying and I did not do that so that part is my fault. I bought several cans of it when it was on sale and I plan on using it between colorings my my stylist to cover the grey as it grows out. I think I saw the Roux on Amazon too but it was more expensive than what I paid in the beauty supply store. Good luck.

great stuff, will bite the bullet so and try get rid if this grey!. Yeah, that's what I wanted to hear, that although it stains hands it didn't your scalp.

Only a cosmetic problem but some days you just need something to lift you, don't you.

just my 2 cents regarding hair color. I was a regular on this page when going through my treatments. I was definitely hair obsessed during the regrowth phase. I am 3 yrs since hair started growing back. My hair is longer than my avatar pic but same color. My hair was medium brown (dyed) for many years. When my hair came in it came in white/gray. I didn't realize how white I was. It's actually a pretty white/silver color. You may want to consider keeping your natural color and not putting more toxins on/in your body. (We already had enough toxins with chemo!) it's much easier going natural now that it has been done for us. It's hard to grow out when deciding to stop coloring. It's a very popular thing now! Going gray. There are some very beautiful gray haired ladies out there.

    imageimageimageimageimage

I'm leaving mine natural. I second guessed it in the beginning. But No more roots! No more toxins! Look at the "going gray gracefully" fb page. Although we are not "transitioning" there are some great gray hairstyles and support for being who we are.

Mine came back white as snow. At 56 that wasn't working for me. I'm a redhead so I will keep coloring. My plastic surgeon was 40 and hers turned white and it looked great on her.

I'm going with whatever color it comes back as. I'd already been wondering how I was going to slowly start going gray. It will be so much easier to not color.

Hi all. Haven't posted in a while but have been following along. I'm now almost 7 months PFC and am just amazed at how slowly my hair is growing. I ditched the wig again, as the weather hit over 100 and I just couldn't take it anymore. My hair is really thick and super curly, just short. I went in and had my stylist trim the back which grew much faster than the top. My bangs and most of the top is still only about 2 inches long. I've given up worrying. At least I have hair and it seems quite healthy. Like Cali, I'm not sure mine will ever be long again.

I had used a natural color, Madison Reed, and it looked great, but then went in and had my hair professionally colored. My grey was patchy and uneven so I evened it out. Feel much better. Whatever makes you feel good about yourself is what you should do.

Seq, how was vacation? So very glad you finally decided to go. I have my first mammo, ultrasound, and new labs coming up next week, and I feel like we shouldn't waste any opportunities for fun!

Hope wherever you are you're surviving the weather!

I started going grey when I was still in my 20's. It's been pretty much all grey (or should I say white) for about 20 years. I haven't coloured it in many, many years. Embrace the grey - life is so much easier when you can stop worrying about your roots showing. I haven't started chemo yet, but I'm really curious about how my hair will look after it grows back in. I actually hope it doesn't come in dark!

Pingpong, I also started getting white hairs when I was 16. I loved the color as it truly was white and not grey and as the years went by I was complimented on it often. My hair started coming back in December and while a lot of white has come back there is a lot of dark hair too. I am probably one of the few who frowned upon seeing that because I really loved the color I had. But then . I am grateful to have hair again and I hear in a few years it will go back to what it used to be. :-)

Over 3 months PFC, I'm still nearly bald in the "Bozo the Clown" area from what used to be my widow's peak back to the top of my head. Since I used to do a very deep part / comb over, that's frustrating, but not shocking.

My current issue is facial hair. As a "vintage" woman, I've had a bit of a dark mustache and some fine, blond hair along my jaw line for years. Post-chemo, the mustache is much more pronounced and I have fine blond hair intruding even on my forehead as far in as my eyebrow arch! What at-home product do you ladies use for facial hair removal? I've tried an electric razor, but dislike how rough my skin felt afterwards. I'm thinking waxing, but have been nervous about trying it. Salon services or electrolysis are out of reach financially. Does you hair have to be left to grow to maximum length before you can wax? Scared

Since I've always had fairly bold, dark brows, I was thrilled when they and my lashes returned. Interestingly, I'm going to have to pluck in the uni-brow and arch area that have required little attention in years and my brow hairs seem even darker and coarser. Also, I'd been able to pretty much stop shaving my arm pits and that hair is coming back with vigor. Have others found this true?

Pre-chemo I used a product called Vaniqa, prescribed by my GYN, but you have to use it morning and evening, and it's expensive and not covered by insurance. I only had to use it on my chin, so it lasted a year, but was over a $100 a tube. If they come back dark enough, I'll have them lasered

Hi. I have not commented in this forum before. I had breast cancer in 1999 and was recently diagnosed again in Feb. The first time I had chemo I lost all my hair. This time during chemo I decided to use the cold caps. It has not given us the results we thought we would get. I can't go out of the house without a head covering. I have a little bit of scraggly hair and just enough to make a baby sized pony tail. So at least when I wear a cap, it sticks out the back. I've lost it all around my ears and top of my head. It looks a little bit like my Dad's comeover. Not pretty. I have one more treatment left and am looking forward to the regrowth process. It should be interesting to see the new hair grow in with the long strands of hair. My hair dresser is going to have to really put her thinking cap on for this one.

My question is..........there are so many products on the market that claim they help your hair grow in faster. Have any of you used any with success? I've heard of Nioxin, Fast, Keranique, Art Naturals' Argan Oil Shampoo Hair Growth Therapy, PURA D'OR Anti-Hair Loss Premium Organic Argan Oil Shampoo (Gold Label), 16 Fluid Ounce

    I found this helpful:

    Powerful ingredients in organic shampoos

Now that you've seen the best organic shampoos, here's where you can learn about what makes them powerful against hair loss, dandruff, excess oil, and dryness.

    • Argan oil—promotes hair growth, moisturizes
    • Aloe Vera—hydrates, heals, and soothes
    • Coconut Oil—hydrates and adds shine, can fight infection
    • Tea tree oil—gets rid of dead skin cells, stimulates healthy growth, antiseptic
    • Rosemary—cleans out dead skin from scalp, stimulates circulation
    • Jojoba Oil—imitates a body's own natural oil to slow excess production and cut grease
    • Lavender—antiseptic, antifungal, heals and calms skin
    • Keratin—smooths rough cuticles of hair shafts
    • Panthenol or Vitamin B5—helps bind moisture to hair, make it look and feel thicker

    Harmful Ingredients in regular shampoos

    Sulfates, also known as detergents

Why do organic shampoo manufacturers avoid sulfates in their products? Research has linked sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS or SLES) to cataracts in adults and poor eye development in children. It may also irritate oil glands and dry out the scalp. It's known by a few other names like these below:

    • Ammonium lauryl sulfate
    • Derivatives of lauryl alcohol
    • Myreth sulfate
    • Propylene glycol, a main ingredient of antifreeze in cars
    • Olefin sulfonate, also known as kerosene

Sulfates can create a nice lather when you wash your hair, but you don't need lots of suds to clean your scalp or hair thoroughly.

    Parabens

What are parabens and why do organic shampoo companies avoid them? Parabens act like estrogen in the body. A high concentration could cause breast cancer and problems with reproduction. Some places in the world ban these chemicals outright, especially in cosmetics and products used by children. Avoid methylparaben and propylparaben, for example.

    Alcohol

Certain kinds of alcohol will dry out hair. Avoid shampoos with regular alcohols except these fatty alcohols listed in the ingredients. Fatty alcohols include cetyl alcohol, cetearyl alcohol, or lauryl alcohol.

    Synthetic perfumes and colors

Organic shampoos smell good because of natural herbs. Avoid chemical formulations that could dry out your skin and hair. These ingredients often have a FD&C or D&C number instead of a name.

    Formaldehyde

Ick, remember those bottled frogs floating in formaldehyde in biology class? You're alive, not dead, and you certainly don't need this preservative on your hair. It can actually make you lose more hair.

Side effects of using organic shampoos

Here are some things you may notice as you change to using organic shampoos. Please note that organic doesn't mean it's like baby shampoo. If you get organic shampoo in your eyes, it will still burn like any other shampoo would.

You may find that you don't have much lather without chemical surfactants, especially if you have hard water, but that your hair feels cleaner anyway.

You may find that you look forward to washing your hair. This is good since organic shampoos often have an expiration date. They don't rely on preservatives to stay fresh.

Although you'll probably pass through a transitional phase of a few days to a couple of weeks, you'll notice a difference. At first, you may wonder if the new shampoo is doing the job because you may get more tangles, dryness, or even oiliness as your hair and scalp heal. Then you'll start to see positive results like shine, bounce, and softness. Your hair may feel and look thicker and any dry flakes should clear up.

Ways to help your hair transition from chemical to organic shampoos

Experts with experience using organic shampoos recommend a few things to help your hair transition and thrive.

    • Apple Cider Vinegar rinses can help clean out chemicals and dead skin and restore shine
    • Apply an organic conditioner to the tips each time you shampoo, or at least once a week
    • A leave-in hair conditioner or masque can also help accelerate healing
    • Try massaging argan oil into your scalp if you are suffering from thinning hair
    • Or massage jojoba oil into your hair and scalp if you have excess oil
    • Get a hair cut to remove split ends and dead hair
    • Use a brush or comb appropriate for your kind of hair
    • Avoid dyeing and tinting for a couple of weeks as you adjust to the new shampoo

Soon you'll be the one recommending organic shampoos to your friends and family.

Rdsm, what a great list and terrific research. I'm now 8 months PFC. My hair has grown in fairly full, but is so incredibly slow!!! I think I've tried just about everything on your list, plus the essential oils, Biotin, and vitamins. I honestly think all these products are good products, but your hair will grow back at the rate it decides and there's really nothing we can do to hurry it along. It's my personal belief that all those products make us feel a little better because we feel like we're doing something. It's out of our control though which gets frustrating. I've just now given up the wig and scarves, but because it's so hot now and I can't take the head coverings, not because I love my hair.

The bangs and top seem to be the slowest growing.I've had my hair colored a few weeks ago and just the back and sides trimmed a little. The back grows much quicker than the rest. BTW, I didn't use cold caps as I just felt with all the restrictions, I wouldn't be able to go natural anyways; I lost every hair on my body lol!

Well, tomorrow is my big day. I go to City of Hope for my first 3-D mammogram, an ultrasound, labs, see my surgeon and my oncologist! Wish me luck. It's a bit nerve-wracking.

Oh, here's my hair this morning:

Dara you look great!!! Love your hair. I agree with you about hair growing at it's own speed. I have been upset today--well maybe a little jealous. I have a friend who went through the same chemo at the same time as me. We finished a week apart. She has twice the length and thickness as I do. I was feeling pretty good about my hair now I'm pretty down about it again. I was finally feeling it is starting to actually grow. I'm 5.5 months pfc yet this is all I have to show for it. Then....I read an article last night that those of us with hormone receptor positive cancer have a much greater chance of late recurrence than those who don't. I had never heard that before. Best wishes on your appointments tomorrow. I start the first of many follow up appointments tomorrow too. I don't have the mammogram until September though. Already getting nervous. Please keep us posted.

This is my hair as of Friday. 22 weeks PFC. Not too thrilling

DaraB and seq24, you both look great. The cold caps were a big disappointment for me. I finished round 3 today and have my last treatment in 3 weeks.! I have lost bout 75% and hope to not lose any more.!can't leave the house without a head covering. My hair looks like a cross between a mullet and an old man's comb over. I'm obsessed with wanting to be done and starting the regrowth process. I think you are right about, the hair will grow when it grows. Of course there is no magic pill or shampoo but the advertising makes us belive that there is. I will most likely buy some product and hope for the best. Always a silver lining...... Make up, earrings and a smile alwsys work! 😉🌻

Thanks for the input, ladies. I still hope to hear from anyone who uses at-home hair removal. Between my insurance co-pays, vet bills and no longer being able to delay repairing wood rot and painting my house for the first time in 20 years, even reasonably priced salon visits aren't in the budget.

    Dara, best of luck!

Seq, if you saw my bald area, you would feel much better about where you're at in the regrowth process. Happy

Rdsm, sorry the cold cap wasn't more successful.

I know y'all are discouraged with your hair growth, but it makes me feel better. My last chemo is 7/21, and your pictures give me some hope that I'll have enough by Christmas to ditch the wig. I wore my hair pretty short anyway, which will help. My third treatment is Friday, and I still have a bunch of 1" standing-straight-up hair, as well as some that either came in just before or just after my first treatment. I'm surprised to still have any left, frankly. I'm hoping the blasted hairs on my chin come back dark so I can have them lasered, but with my luck they'll be gray.

I did a couple of times. I actually went overboard with things I bought as head covers. I figured if I was going bald I was going to have a little fun with scarves and different colored wigs. I got mine from headcovers.com.

I got a lot from Headcovers.com as well. They usually have 10% off desks around holidays. The bamboo pre-Tied scarfs are my go to headgear. I ordered a baseball cap with hair fromthem as well but ordered the wrong color. They charged a $25 restocking fee. You can get the same hat at Amazon with free returns if you need it.

rdsm, there is a place in Tampa that has halo hair pieces as well as a ponytail halo. It's called Chemo Diva and you can order online. I ordered a ponytail and love it. They have a really quick turn around time when ordering. Also, you can order color swatches for $1 each so you can see what you're ordering first.

lohoff, that looks great progress at 3 months. Looks like nice gains in the past month, and your hair seems to be filling in fairly evenly.

Far beyond where I was at 3 mos, or even now at 6+ mos -- I still have lots of very thin / sparse areas that are quite noticeable. Not much chance of dropping the wig for a while.

I used Latisse (generic version) during chemo. It did not work for me. Although it took a long time to lose my lashes. Have not tried it since chemo ended.
