Christy... I think it's a no name kind of aloe vera gel that I found.  Mine, too, is 99% pure aloe vera gel.  It's a brown color.

wblibrary... I am sooooo looking forward to the day when I can have a cut and trim.

I have a hair question that I haven't found an answer to - or may have missed.  I'm starting chemo soon so I haven't lost my hair yet - currently no gray hair, but my onc said that when it grows back it'll be all gray.  Why?

ccbaby:   tell us more!!!!   Where can I buy this Aloe Vera gel??  Is there another name for it? Or is that what it is actually called?  How often should it be applied to the scalp?

    Thanks so much!!!!

Sweet jenn3, the reason is that you lack pigment as the follicles rebirth. It is temporary so not to worry. It is more clear than gray. Maybe some gray too but again this is only when it first comes back. According to all the survivors that have revisited there hair did eventually go back to the way it was. I am sorry that you are starting this part of your journey. I will hold you in my prayers.

Remember that it is not easy but it is doable!! The time will fly and with the support of your friends and family it will be OK. Use the boards to commiserate and educate. They truly are invaluable. And every chemo girls mantra drink drink drink (water)!!! Hang in there sister!!!!!!!!

I have been going without a hat or wig more and more. I am way to bald to totally pull it off but I do it anyway. I feel like hey I did not do anything wrong that I have to hide my head in shame. I wear cute clothes and jewelry and that helps make me feel like a gir. I find it a bit naughty and liberating. Wink I hope everyone is being patient and enjoying the tiny bit of improvement everyday!

I got that real expensive eyelash growth stimulator. It seems to be working. I am not a hundred % sure. But hey it was a gift so I am using it.

Bold-  I know exactly what you mean about feeling naughty.  I like my short hair.   It is so easy to take care of. Plus, when I put earrings on and makeup, it feels even better.  I get more compliments about the short hair than I had when I was always trying to grow out my hair all the time!

It wouldn't hurt to put it on your scalp a couple of times a day...especially after you have just shampooed, since it natural.  I googled it too and other websites say you can make a shampoo out of it with wheat germ oil and coconut milk. I have used  Biolage hydrating shampoo for years and it has aloe vera and wheat germ in it. My hair always grew fast before BC.

Maggie....Sorry I missed your post. You can buy the aloe vera gel in any natural health food store. Make sure it is pure aloe and says at least 99%.  I am not sure if it will work or not, but it is worth a try. Just google 'aloe vera to promote hair growth' and all kinds of websites will come up for it.

Sorry for all of the posts, but I have decided to go more organic with food and beauty products and was looking up the best organic shampoos and I stumbled on a website that said Biolage shampoo was very toxic and even had cancer causing ingredients! So, I am not recommending that anymore.

Hi everyone.  I colored my hair again yesterday for the 3rd time.  I used Clairol Natural Instincts.  It works really good although my hair is growing out of it pretty quickly.  I also think the Nioxin shampoo is washing it out faster.  Anyway, I used "Cinnamon Stick" and got a nice red color.

Jenn, my hair was starting to gray before chemo.  After chemo, it grew in mostly silver and gray so I have a lot of stubborn grays to cover.

Here is my most recent pic (taken today).  I am now 18 1/2 weeks post chemo!  I have to say I'm loving the short hair too.  I never knew I was a "short hair person" either!  Sorry for the big size!

ccbaby:  Thank you so much for the info on the aloe vera gel.  Of course, there's no guarantee that it will help with my thin area, but hey, it's worth a try!!  Thanks again!

Lainey:  YOU LOOK GREAT!!!!!!!  I love your hairstyle and the color is excellent!!!!  You really look beautiful!!!!!

Lainey - I got the dreaded red x on your photo.  Might have to do with the fact that I am on my laptop since I am out of town.  Sure wish I could have seen the picture!  When was the last time you updated your avatar?  How about throwing the picture in your avatar for the time being?  I know.....I am being selfish - I just want to see how you look now.

My hubby is still swearing that my hair is growing back in fast.  I know the bangs take the longest but I already have growth in that area whereas last week it was nothing but some stubble.  I still don't think I am going to get chemo curls since my hair is laying so flat.  I just don't like the silver gray color that it is.

Lainey, that's a beautiful color and you have great growth!!!

I know what you mean about every ache and pain - it's hard not to obsess over it.  Not doing too well with the Femara, I'm having non-stop nausea and headaches and it's only 2 weeks.  Waiting to hear from my onc's office about this.

Lainey - You look awesome.  I am 6 months PFC and what you see in my avatar was a week ago.  No curls, either.  My lashes are thinning again, too, and I haven't had to wax my brows in over a month either, so I think (hope) maybe I'm just going through a slow phase.  They say the Femara also slows growth, too.  Patience IS NOT one of my virtues.

Lisa1964 Hi Lisa, yes still on Herceptin and I think my last treatment is Aug 13 2009.  July 22 will mark my 1 year anniversary for my diagnosis.  Boy talk about a year to remember!  My hair is really curley except for one side which is bone straight, that should make for some interesting styling!  Hang in their Ladies eventually you will have hair!  Hugs to you all!

What do you all consider to be your anniversary?  I found my lump on 8/8.  I had mammogram on 8/11, I had biopsy on 8/13 and I was told I had cancer on 8/15.

JaneM    I personally consider the anniversary to be the date of surgery.  I found my lump in May '08, had mammo on 6/10/08, had biopsy on 6/16/08, was told it was cancer on 6/18/08 and had my lumpectomy on 7/10/08  -  I personally consider 7/10 as the anniversary, 'cause that's when I was considered 'cancer free'.  This past 7/10 was my one year anniversary!!!!

I don't know if that's the way it should be considered, but I just thought it made sense to make the day of 'cancer free' the anniversary date.

If this is wrong, and anyone knows it, please post.

    Hugs,

    Maggie

Jess  I plan on coloring my hair the end of September, by then it should be close to 1-1/2 or 2" long - maybe I am just being optimistic but the first coloring I do will be with a natural, no chemical semi-permanent hair color.  I have this horrible silver gray color when I used to be a natural blonde.  I think most women wait for 3 to 4 months before using a regular type hair color (the ones with chemicals) or permanent hair color at least that is what I have been noticing reading this thread.  The natural hair color products are more expensive, I have seen them for around $12 to $15 a box whereas Clairol, etc. are prices more in the $5 range.  I just don't want to take any chances of damaging the little bit of hair I have - just my personal feeling on this.

Lainey-you look beautiful and you have a nice full head of hair!

I am 17 weeks out and today I just discovered I can actually make a part in my hair! It has been almost 8 months since I was able to part my hair. A happy day for me!

Bold - thank you.  I asked the doctor why the color change and he didn't answer me, he just said it would come back differently.  I have found a lot of support in here and love the positive vibes from everyone along the way. I have read that hydration and exercise are very important.  I am trying to get my walking routine back before chemo, believe it or not I am still recovering from achilles surgery several months ago.

Lainey - I love the hair!!!!!! You look beautiful!!

Thank you everyone!  The first time I colored my hair I used Naturtint.  I found it at Whole Foods and it was pricey - about $17.  I was about 10 wks PFC.  It worked ok but washed out so fast and now I prefer Natural Instincts by Clairol.  It's only $7 at Walmart.  My hair was about 1/2 inch long when I first colored it.

Hi, everyone.  I'm posting my progress at 13 weeks (3 months) PFC.  Not as much as I'd hoped, but I guess I'm getting there, especially when I look back at where I posted at 2 months.  If only the top would fill in!  I can't wait until it looks like Lainey's!!!

A co-worker took these, and he's famous for getting the weird angles and too close shots, so sorry about the super close up - not the  most flattering, but you can see my "friar's patch" at the top of my head.

Chelev, it's coming in!  You look so cute and I'm so proud of you.  I had a couple of patches on top and on the sides that I was worried about but they filled in eventually.  I don't know if it helped or not, but I used to rub Nioxin follicle booster on those problem areas.  I would really concentrate just on those spots.  I also took and am still taking (along with other stuff) a daily multi-vitamin for women along with an extra Biotin supplement.  I have a friend here in Dallas and I don't know what she's doing but her hair is growing in literally like weeds!  I read on her blog that she is growing and drinking wheat grass shakes.  Sounds nasty but if I knew about this sooner I'd probably try it too. lol

    Thanks, Lainey!!

I heard that wheat grass is good for you, but it sure doesn't taste good!!

I have been faithfully using Nioxin and will continue to concentrate on the sides and top - the back seems to be doing okay.  I am also doing Biotin and an anti-oxidant daily vitamin, so I must be doing everything right!

I have also used Natural Instincts hair color - did it last week so I could see how much hair I actually had, and like you, the Naturatint was expensive and didn't seem to last with the Nioxin rubs.

    Thanks for the encouragement!

    Hello all.

I finished chemo mid-March and mid-May could see some color and a faint hair line. Now, it's about 1/2" to 3/4". Not growing very fast. The top and crown is thickest, with the sides still pretty thin. The color is like a no-color; not black, not brown, not gray...just somewhere in between. My eyelashes and eyebrows are very thin. I started using LiLash a week ago. Anyone with good results from using it?
