what would be wrong about dying my hair 7 weeks PFC? everytime i mention it, someone says nooooo, don't do it. Why?

Reeney - there is nothing wrong with dying your hair after 7 weeks if you use natural products.

But I am thinking along these terms - your hair is starting to come in - some of it is fuzz hair - you don't want to use any harsh chemicals on that new hair coming in if that is taking a chance of damaging it.  At least that is what I understand by reading this thread the last month or so.

You can go to Whole Foods and purchase natural dye products which is what I am planning on doing the first couple of times.  Yes, they do cost more - about $15 per box from what I have seen but if that will prevent any damage to my newly grown hair then that is what I will use until my hair gets to about 2" long and then I am going to use semi-permanent hair color but again, that is just my personal plan that works for me.

When I get back home I will post another picture if I can remember how but my hair is growing really strange.

The hair on the side of my head is growing to the center.  It is laying down flat but headed toward the top of my scalp.  At this rate I will end up with a mohawk!  Is this normal, you would think the hair would grow and lay down towards the bottom of your neck and not backwards like mine is doing.  I have cowlicks going in every direction!  The only hair that is laying down normal is what is growing in the back of my head.

Jancie, well if it is a mohawk, at least they are in style right now!

Seriously, my hair in the back is laying down too, but the stuff on top is all over the place.  I have sort of a part, it looks like a bald-man's comb-over on the top, and the sides want to flare out so I have to slick them down to keep them from poufing out.

So now I am using aloe on my scalp now in addition to everything else :)  I tried to dye it last week with some natural (no amonia and no peroxide) dye and I used a paint brush (a wide one) to paint on the dye and I kept hitting my scalp so I washed it off quickly.  I need to try again but I think I may have someone help me.  My hairdresser keeps telling me not to dye it also.

Jaimieh - does your hairdresser use natural products?  If not, that may be the reason she is telling you to not dye it.  My hairdresser only uses the commercial products that have amonia and all of those other chemicals in it.  I am not going to go see her until my hair is 2" long to get the end trimmed and then I am more than likely to dye my hair myself once I learn how so that I can keep the cost down.

Last night I was laying in bed in the hotel room and was having this visual of going to the salon, my regular hairdresser was not available so they this young chick doing my hair.  She had washed my scalp, I was sitting in the chair all draped and she proceeded to cut over 1/2" on the first cut and I went ballistic telling her "I just got done with chemo, this is all of the hair I have left and I asked for you to just trim the ends"  I proceeded to walk out of the salon still draped with my little bit of hair soaking wet.  Alas, it was just a daydream but scared the crap out of me.

Chelev~ Congrats on going topless :)  How do you keep the dye off of your scalp ???

I feel like a chea pet these days (I am happy about it) but it is odd looking because my hair is starting to get longer but it is still standing up.  I am thinking about trying to dye it again.  I got to get my little man to take my picture again this week :)

What a dream!  Sometimes when I dream I have my hair and then I wake up and it isn't there!  I hate that!

Well I tried to dye my hair again and it didn't take again.  It's getting kinda funny and it's a good thing that the bottle contains so much.  It looks great while the dye is on but it all washes out :(  Guess I will live with the color.

Hey all. I just wanted to say that I went against everything and dyed my hair yesterday. I used Natural instincts. I tryed natural products first and they did not work. Sooooo I did it and it worked fine. I still have the hair on my head and it was not damaged. I did not leave it on as long as they recommended but I achieved the color.  I had no irritation to my scalp. I just thought you might like to know. I only have about a half inch of hair. I am soooo over this.  I really miss having my long hair and to know that it will be like 6 years before I have it again makes me crazy. My hair has always been a big part of my identity. This just sucks. I am grateful to be alive but I still wish I wish I wish................

I had the hair dreams too and still do sometimes. It's really disappointing to wake up and realize you don't have that long straight hair!  Grrrr..

I had everyone telling me not to color my hair too.  I heard "Nooo, don't color it... wait and see what color it turns out to be".  My thinking was "Heck no!".  I already knew it was coming in salt and pepper, I didn't need to see anymore.  My hairdresser had told me it was long enough to color around 8 weeks but didn't see any sense in doing it because it still had a lot of growing to do and the roots would start showing pretty quick.  Well, she was right.  When I told her I had colored it myself with Naturtint, she said she would have done it but didn't want to see me spending a lot of money when it would need to be done again so soon.  So I switched to Clairol Natural Instincts.  It's about $7 from Walmart but I'm having to do it every 2 weeks.  I think the Nioxin shampoo made it wash out faster too so I switched to some baby shampoo.  I never heard of putting aloe on my head or else I probably would have tried that too!  Just be careful about putting gels on your head because according to my hairdresser, you don't want to clog up the follicles.

Cheleve - Way to go!  I'm proud of you girlie :)

I started with the Nioxin shampoo two days ago and now I have 5:00 shadow.  Might be that my hair was just ready to come in or it might be the shampoo gave me the boost the follicles need.  I don't care which it was, I am just so happy to see growth.  I am 7 weeks out tomorrow.  Also, had my exchange surgery on Tuesday.  Yippee!  No more rocks in my chest.  Recovery has been easy, just get jabs of pain every now and then.  Life is heading back to normal!  Lainey-I love your style and can't wait to get to that stage.  You're 17 weeks PFC, right?

Lainey, can I say how much I love your 'do? You and I seem to have the same regrowth rate, I'm about 8 weeks behind you (gotta change my avatar). I actually made hubby measure my hair the other day. One inch exactly. It's just starting to go past my ears. *happy hairgrowth dance*

Chelev, kudos to you for going topless, albeit accidentally, lol! too funny, since for the past week I nearly forgot my wig too! You look adorable! You have a face that's very well suited to short hair. And are those your brows or do you enhance them? gorgeous!

i too am going topless in public more and more. (ok, well, just when I walk the dog. And once when I dropped the boy off at band practice.) This weekend will be the first time I'll go sans wig and makeup in front of the inlaws. I'm a bit nervous, I don't know why. They love me to pieces.

I'm having great results with Biotin B-Complex Thickening Shampoo from Avalon Organics. Although I guess it could also be the biotin in my multivitamin (tho my legs and underarm hair is coming back reeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaalllllllyyyyyyy slowly, not that i'm complaining). i shampoo every day, and leave it on my scalp while i wash.

My eyelashes are still short and stubby and practically nonexistent. I've been experimenting with Talika & Ardell, but I think I'm going to try sticking with Mavala Eye-Lite Double Lash for a month and see what happens. I'm too nervous to try revitalash. i really really want my hair back, but i also really really want my lashes back too.

FYI: seems like my hair's coming in pretty straight (normally it's wavy). And still very little grey. Yay!

"I'm thinking these doctors need to read some of these threads." Amen to that, Titan!

Magnola, congrats on the soft foobs! I had my exchange july 8th - and even tho I had lipo on the sides, I'm amazed at the fast recovery. (although when I flex, I still fell like the expanders are there. i'm hoping in time it'll feel more natural. tryin' not to worry.)

Jamieh, I had problems with the color sticking to my hair at first too, especially with the natural stuff from the health food store.  If any coloring gets on your scalp, it will shampoo off usually after one or two washes - it did for me.

I am so glad I used regular hair color - it just wasn't getting it with the natural stuff, maybe because there are so many more colorless and grays coming in than before.

I am only wearing hats now if I am in the sun - we rode our bikes last night to the local pizza place (4 miles) for a quick slice and I didn't wear anything, and today neither, and met with a supplier at work, plus ran errands to Ulta for more Nioxin, and to Walmart, and didn't even think much about it!  also am working on finding a new stylist once I have enough to cut and shape, so I can get in with someone from the beginning.  It was freeing, and a little bit of nervousness, but as my DH pointed out, its obvious what I have been going through, and if people don't like it, too bad, let THEM try it.  Good point, he's such a good guy!

I think our docs should read these threads - they'd be getting a real up-close dose of what / how / everything is affecting us both physically and mentally!

Renee, thank you for posting that link.  I caught the tail end of it the other night and knew I had missed something special.

Magnola, I'm now officially 19 weeks PFC.  It's hard to believe it's been that long.  Luckily time seems to be passing pretty quickly! Yeah, bye bye rocks!  I'm glad you're feeling like yourself these days.

Lisa810, pretty soon you'll have to start tucking those little hairs behind your ears!

I have about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch and am 7 weeks PFC.  My hair is white, gray, brown...???  I would like to dye it as well.  How do you apply the dye...I just rubbed it all over and cleaned off any that got on my face and neck before.  Never thought about my scalp getting color!  If I use natural or perm. dye, how should I apply it so my scalp isn't colored too?

I got a hair regrowth kit at Sally Beauty.  It has a shampoo, conditioner, and drops you put on your scalp to promote regrowth.  I also take the 10,000 biotin.

Where do you find the products for eyebrow regrowing.

    Thanks,

    Chris

Renee, thanks for posting it.  I am going to email that link to every single person I know, it was so beautiful.  I'm still crying.

chris, you can put the same serum on your eyebrows as on your head.  what I do with the nioxin follicle booster is after I've rubbed it well into the scalp, there is usually a drop left near the bottle opening. I take that drop and rub it into my eyebrows.  it's been helping!

Chris, I understand about the eyelashes!!  Mine fell out way after chemo.  Luckily they are growing back - and I am finally able to put mascara on them again.  They are just as thick as they were, just not very long yet, but at least I can see them again.  They will come back!

Chelev:  How far PFC are you?

  • chelev

As of yesterday I am 3 months PFC, or 13 weeks out.  I have a little more growth every week, now that I am looking at photos I took last month.  Mostly very thin on top at the crown.  Back is coming in okay.  Could be thicker all around, but it will come back.  I am about 3 weeks behind in progress, Chris, because I had a bad case of folliculitis following the last chemo on 4/23.

I packed up my wigs and chemo hats (except for the cute ball caps) to store in my closet.  I tried each of the wigs back on, but now they just don't look right, because I've been going with just a bandana or without for a while now.  I will keep them because they are part of my journey, though maybe down the road I will donate them to the american cancer society.  I do have a wedding shower and wedding coming up that I might wear them to . . . but then again, I might not and just proudly wear my hair!
