Another Idol watcher here.  My daughter, my grandchildren have a standing date for the show.  I cut a straw into 3 pieces, feels like the right length as a cigarette and I get to breathe deeply too.  Day 4, some heavy craving but those should lessen soon?

    karen333,

    Yeah, another Idol fan!

When my kids were little we had the standing date for Survivor (back when it first came out).  My husband was in a golf league that played that night, so the kids and I would get take out and settle in to watch survivor!  It was such fun!

Absolutely, it will lessen soon!  I really felt pretty awful days 1-5.  Actually felt like I had a mild case of the flu.  By day 5, I felt good enough to go out with my husband and be fairly confident that I wasn't going to kill someone! lol....

I do remember a drastic change around day 16 (although everyone is different) where my thinking changed from "I can't believe it has ONLY BEEN 1 hour, 1 day or 1 week" to posting here and saying I had to go back and count the days because I FORGOT how long it had been!  HUGE turning point to go from thinking about it all day, everyday, to, hmmm, how long HAS it been!

    You will get there too!!!

Today I dropped my son off at the court house and later found out that he was given 180 days and then some community services.  I am handling it pretty well but did break down for a few smokes once I got home and found out that he will be in for awhile.  I just hope he learns from this.  I am still keeping my surgery date and see my slips as that.  I hope everyone is having a smoke free day and if you aren't know that it can be done.

    Dutchy,

You can't change what is happening right now for your son BUT you can get yourself back on track for your phase 2 of your surgery!!

You so deserve to have the BEST possible outcome!  We will be here to give you whatever help you need!

    Hang Tough,

    Jennifer

No cig. since Sunday, both grandkids gave me a thumbs up today.  Going to get an exercise bike, start trying to lose some of the wonderful weight I have gained - 20 lbs.-. BAD.  Might as well get an indoor exercise machine, Western New York is going to be in the deep freeze for a few more months and in the cold I hibernate.  Karen

    OK Ladies,

The 2-day idol premier is over!! What did you all think??!

My first impression is that the judges have been really very kind!  On the up-side, I am able to watch this early on, where in past years it was soooooo uncomfortable, I was not able to really watch until later in the season.... On the down-side, I think the judges all have really big hearts but if they don't start cutting more people, they are going to have a zillion people going to Hollywood!

What do you all think of season 10?

Sweet,  How awesome that the first city was in Jersey!!!

    karen333,

    SO, SO HAPPY for you!!!!

I too have gained roughly 20 pounds.  Some I'm sure due to Tamoxifen, some to quitting smoking and some due to losing my dog to cancer this past summer (loss of any motivation)!  No matter what the cause, the pounds are here and I have vowed they will be gone by summer!

Have started doing the treadmill daily for 45 minutes (at least on the days I am not shoveling snow)!  I am also in NY (central NY) and we just don't seem to be able to catch a break this winter from the snow!

There are some threads here under the Health and Fitness category where there are girls trying to lose weight.  I have joined in the E-LAB thread! I'm sure you would be welcome there!  If you don't feel that is something you'd like to do, I'd be glad to have a fellow, weight-loss friend here!!!

    You are doing GREAT!!!!

    Edited to Add:

You are so early in your quit that I wouldn't even be worried about losing weight at this point!  It's more of a 'Do what you have to do' to ensure your success at this point!

Exercise, if you feel up to it, will definitely help BUT, don't get too much on your plate at once!

Karen333 - I gained 38 pounds since dx.. I quit smoking just weeks before my dx, chemopause, LE, pain issues, 8 months of Tamox and thyroid cancer.  The weight issue is not fun but I will admit the support I get from my E-LAB friends helps keep me motivated (lost 4lbs - woooowhoooo!) plus Seaside is on my team - Yea Hummingbirds - GO TEAM!!!!  Come on over to E-LAB and join the fun...

Congrat's on 5 DAYS smoke free!!!

    O2B,

Yeah for the weight loss for the "our team" this week!

I was down around 1/2 lb this morning (was hoping for more) and hope I can hang onto that small amount for weigh in tomorrow!  My exercise has been good this week and so has my water consumption so hoping I don't disappoint my new team this week!

Seaside - My water consumption has been good, so far my weight is down1 lb from last week (4lbs was my over all loss, not weeklyFrown), I hope I get extra credit for signing up for my local 'biggest loser type' weight loss program but my exercise as been...ummmmm...not so good Yell

I am having a hard time finding the time, between working 10 hours (with commute) and then kids and dinner...ughhhhhhhhhhhh!

    O2B,

For me, and I am not working and do not have young children, it is really SO hard to try to squeeze in exercise.  There is always something that seems to be more urgent!

I do think it is a matter of, we do the best we can and doing SOMETHING is better than NOTHING!!

I'm hoping my extra credit this week is that I bought a pair of those "toner shoes".  They supposedly make your work-out more difficult and boosts your calorie burn when you exercise (and even when you go about your nomal activities).

Well, I must say, my heart rate was certainly higher on the treadmill than normal AND my legs are more sore than normal so, I certainly HOPE my calorie burning was higher because making my workout MORE difficult was NOT what I had in mind!!

Hope the scale is kind to both of us tomorrow!

I was fully prepared to not like the new team of judges, but find that I do.  Like you, i usually do not like the beginning auditions, but this was OK.  I thought 16 years old was the youngest you could be?  The 15 yr. old was amazingly good though.  Karen        (Seaside, I will be lurking on the exercise thread, to see if it would be a fit for me.)  o2bhealthy - I'll Check the e-lab out

Idol- I agree the change of judges seems like a good thing.  This is the one show I make my husband watch that he would rather not, even he has been laughing at Steven Tyler.  I agree they are being too nice, but I think they will find their way when they get to the next level.

Losing weight-I was so worried about losing my chest I went on a weight loss kick when I was diagnosed and lost 25 pounds. I had a very big chest that helped hide my tummy. That being said I want to lose another 20 and perhaps look the way I did 10 years ago?  So I will check out the other threads as well for weight loss.  If I lost the next 20 I would be on cloud 9.  So far I have gone from a size 14 to a size 10...sometimes an 8.  I am 5 5 and my goal weight is 135.

I really enjoyed Idol, thought Steven Tyler was a blast...I fondly call him the old, ugly, sexyist rocker...love his Tylerisms.  A local radio show did mention that Steven might have a bit of a problem with his past drug life when it comes to the live shows, he may just go blank but I have faith.  I also like that they are not just showing the trainwreck people and have shown some of the more musical folks.

I'm 1 week away from my 4 month quitversary and I too need to now work on the 15 pounds I've packed on, just so exhausted all the time and still have radiation to go through too.  My family duly notes that I'm the only one they know that gained weight during chemo (still have 2 more infusions to go) I keep blaming it on the steroids...LOL

    Seaside,

Of course Im loving the new judges on idol! LOL. Steven totally cracks me up.

You see how sweet he is to those girls, and the way he looks at them..... Brings back fond memories. He really IS that way when you meet him. He looks right into your soul when you talk to him. (I must admit, I was starstruck and couldnt think of much to say except "remember me" (showing him my tattoo) and "I love you" LOL

I went to a luncheon yesterday where Dr. Susan Love was the speaker and then got to go to the meet n greet afterwards. I asked her opinion about smoking and BC and she said that for some women smoking might even be protective against BC because it blocks estrogen--this is probably why women who smoke, enter menopause earlier than non-smoking women. She also added it was not a reasont o keep smoking though because of all the other problems it causes.

She was very interesting and engaging.

    karen333,

Good catch on the new minimum age to be on idol.  They dropped the minimum age requirement to 15 from 16 (I thought it was eighteen so shows how much I notice...lol)..

Lurk away on the fitness threads and see if any of them click with you.  O2B and I are in the E-LAB thread.  We have divided up into teams for a friendly competition.  Today was weigh-in day so the thread is probably really hopping today!

    Laurie,

My husband has been watching too even though I am certain he would rather be doing almost anything else...lol

Good for you on losing 25 pounds!!

I'm looking to lose 20 pounds (more would be fine too!!).  Have being serious about exercising daily (well, OK, most days), eating healthier foods, in general and using portion control.  So far so good!

    kal_1865,

Congrats on being almost to 4 MONTHS!!

As far as losing weight, start slowly and listen to your body!  You are still going through active treatment and your body requires lots of energy to heal.

If you are like me, radiation will definitely leave you feeling very tired!  Also, they take a bunch of very precise measurements at the beginning of your treatment that determines the proper angles to deliver the radiation to minimize exposure of your heart and lungs.  My radiation team had said no major weight gain/loss during radiation so as to not mess up the measurements. As we have seen, each doctor seems to do things differently but, would be worth a mention.

Love to have you in with us on the weight loss when it is a good time for you to start!  Just have to get you through treatment first!

    VJ,

Dr. Love's book was the very first book that I read after my diagnosis.  It was packed with such good information and her delivery style was such that, for the first time, I thought things were going to be OK!

How very cool for you to have met and had a discussion with her in person!!

I have to stop smoking. I really want to now. Have been playing around with it but today I realized I am serious. I have picked next Saturday as my stop date. Got a copy of Allan Carr;s book Easyway and I must admit it caught my interest. Was going to do chantix until I got my brain back in gear and realized that owuld be dumb for me since its side effects are as horrific as the AI's I am trying to avoid. So, i will be hanging on you all for heavy support. I like a line I read today about cigs...the only thing we like more when we can't have them and like less when we do. That sums it up for me. I spend more time thinking about them and then when I have smoke pouring out of my body (which is very health conscious! how is that for weird) I am absolutely disgusted...ok...I may stumble but I want this..thanks for being here...
