Karen - Yes we are. I can handle the operating room. Will be strange to be in there while I am awake.

Ha! You girls are great! Karen if you are going to wait in the room, can you wipe it down with Clorox wipes? And Jo, keep an eye on me in the OR...I do occupational therapy for a living and I actually scored a job during my lumpectomy surgery and I have no recollection of it! Ha!!!!!

Beckers, consider it done, no infections for you!

Beckers - What a way to score a job! HAHA! Maybe I will bring a tape recorder and we will see if you really talk while under the happy juice.

Yes, good idea! I wish I had one because apparently I was really on one according to my family. :-)

I'm here. Okay but no breasts. Body didn't like the flaps and kept throwing clots each time attempted. Did have a tummy tuck out of it though.

Ohhhhhhh Galsal! I am sorry that the DIEP didn't work out! I know that it is a very complex procedure and sometimes for some it isn't successful. Sorry that you had to experience this! Sending prayers that you are not in too much pain and that you heal quickly....

Hello, all! I am not dx'd with BC yet. High risk and have not been told I need to quit. (intraductal papillomatosis with atypia) But I would like some feedback from anyone that has smoked or is trying to smoke. Because honestly, I just like to smoke!0
-
There are lots of benefits to smoking and no one wants to quit those pleasures. To be successful, the benefits of becoming smoke-free have to be more important than the benefits of continuing to smoke. Becoming smoke-free is a different mind set than--"quitting". My Tip book walks you through how to increase motivation. I've offered a free copy before to anyone on this list, I just need an email address.

Galsal, I am going in for DIEP Aug 9th. What do they do about reconstruction if the fail? I hope I get the tummy tuck for sure too. Ha. Nervous!
Welcome akc! Quitting is not I too enjoyed smoking and cried tears when I smoked. I am so glad I did though! A lot of support on this thread. Good luck.0 -
Hi All!
Embarrased to say that it's been over a year now and I still haven't found that motivation. Reading back a few posts from Cher - I could have written that exactly. So many issues that could be resolved if I were smoke free yet just can't get there. Wondering if psychotherapy would help as I am just so depressed beyond words. Thanks for letting me cry here, and congrats to all of you who beat the nicotine beast!

Hi Lisa. I would definitely try talk therapy. I have been through a lot the past few years and became very depressed with BC diagnosis on top of everything else. I have had my 3rd counseling session and will be starting an antidepressant tonight that will also help with hot flashes i hope. I never even tried or thought about trying to quit the past few years because I had failed so many times that I lost confidence that I was even able. I'm just grateful that so far I'm hanging in there. My PS even called me at home yesterday to make sure I'm not smoking as I'm having BMX and flap reconstruction in 3weeks. I hope you can try. It's so hard. Get help. Patch really helped take edge off and ecig is good too. I have one that has no nicotine I use in a pinch. Good luck!

Beckers, for mine options wil be reviewed before moving forward. Interesting they didn't convert to Tram but given the complications it didn't work right just then.
Seaside, thanks.0 -
Hi Lisa, it is definitely hard, you have to be really motivated and have a plan in place, for ex., are you going to use the patch, gum, lozenge, e cig, cold turkey it. I had been smoking for over 30 yrs., was smoking a pack to pack and a half, depending on stress level, first serious try and with the e cig and the women here I am 16 mos. as a non-smoker. I would say 1st serious try is the exception rather than the rule. It is doable and the women here are a great source of support and tips and tricks. Galsal, so glad to hear from you, and so sorry the procedure didn't work for you, blood clots are nothing to mess with. take care, Karen

hooray for LisaMarie!! good to go now hey kiddo!
hate to admit it, but of course I will. I`ve been smoking like a chimney!! I`m on infection / bug 4!!!! Am going to give this Internist/infectious control dr one more chance! only thing is I >DONT wanna go into hospital. & only way to get action is to go to another hospital and then will get things hopping. but am just hangin in there to see what the swab results are tomorrow. so the way the Dr puts it, if I had 3 bugs, theres surely 5. so damn.. can you believe I got 5 bugs from the OR?.. I`m so grossed out! evidently this one is a strong one & am in week 5 from BMX. On the positive side.. the wound is healing with big help from the VAC dressing & even with my smoking and no VAC I healed 1cm. only have like 30cm to go (approx)... but am constantly thinking about putting the patch on, just been so upset/stressed/sick with these infections.
good luck everyone!!
love ya

Oh my Cher! 5 different strains of MRSA? I work in hospitals and I'm scared of infection for sure!!!! I think I will Clorox my entire house and make visitors wash hands before coming near me. I am so sorry. Try the patch and ecig. It helped take the edge off for sure. Unfortunately I've been trying licorice and chocolate raisins too! Ha! Still get that nagging feeling from time to time but so much better!!!

Hello all. Boy it's been quite awhile since I've been around, so much going on with all of you. I hope everyone is ok. I had my first post treatment mammo and visit with BS last week, everything looks good. Still smoke free, but I've gotta tell you, it is still hard.... I thought it wouldn't be on my mind all the time by now, but I am still constantly thinking about cigarettes all the time. I am still determined to remain smoke free, but I am looking forward to a time when it will not be soooo difficult, Good luck to those who are trying, and congrats to those who are succeeding.

I have my revision on Monday. It is an office procedure and should not take too long. I have been so looking forward to this but now that is it just a couple of days away, I am starting to get nervous. I know it will go well and hopefully I will be able to close another chapter in this long BC journey.

Just found my post a year and a half ago where I said I would quit tomorrow. Well- I am still smoking. Seems to be something I cling on to... Does anyone else fight this same demon everyday, even though Cancer is part of us?

Ladies,
I just got off the phone with Karen and she said it was OK to let you all know that she was admitted to the hospital on Thursday with a pretty bad case of cellulitis originating in her breast that became systemic.
She had a yeast infection just prior to that but, on Thursday she was in quite a bit of pain and her breast was hot, red and the redness was rapidly spreading. She went to the ER and was admitted. She is on several different antibiotics and pain medicine through an IV and is not in pain. They are not sure how long they will keep her but, it will be at least through the weekend...
If you can, please keep her in your thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery!!0 -
Welcome back, Lisamarie!! We've missed you!
Mlucas,
It's never too late! I think we have all been where you are! Heck, I smoked all through treatment and for a couple months after.... Having cancer I don't think was my biggest reason for quitting, odd as that may sound! Think of your originsl post this way.... You WILL quit tomorrow... Just a different tomorrow from what you originally thought....
Cher,
Glad go hear that wound is finally getting better!!!
Beckers,
Lol on the patch, ecig, licorice and chocolate raisin combo! I was a licorice and Jolly Rancher girl, myself! What date is your surgery?
Jo,
Good Luck on Monday!!! Hopefully this is it for you!
Galsal,
How are you feeling? Did the doctor give you any advice for the next step from here?0 -
Seaside - Thanks for the update on Karen. I wondered what happened to her. I will keep her in my thoughts and prayers.
I can tell Monday is going to be one heck of a pocket party. I will wear something with lots of pockets for sure.
