April, thanks for sharing the information .... it is always important to get the message out. If it works and is safe, I'm all for it. Smoking is such a terrible disease and hard one to quit because we found such enjoyment out of it; and it was totally acceptable 40 years ago! Now, it's not and for good reason!

I do believe that there is great potential for e-cigs to be used as a cessation device once regulations and manufacturing standards have made them safer. There is no reason to have diacetyl in e-liquids. Many are saying they don't have it in it but at what level and who did the testing? So far you just have to take the word of the manufacturer.
If you're interested, I have written a whole bunch of articles about e-cigs (including one specifically about diacetyl--It's all about the chemistry with e-cigarettes) which are posted on LinkedIn, there are hyperlinks on my website: http://vjsleight.com/articles-written-by-vj.html

Bosum, please don't be too hard on yourself about the smoking. You are going through a rough time and as such, it might not be wise to worry about quitting although I know you really want to. It is very hard! One of the hardest things I have ever done pretty much. Hugs and try to keep it in perspective! ((((Bosum))))

bosum - Yes, we do understand. April is right. Don't beat yourself up. If everything else is jumping on you now, you can plan to quit down the road. However I am concerned about your not eating. I thought you had turned that around. Can you at least do smoothies and add protein powder? Hugs girlfriend.
LisaMarie - did you finally lick that infection? Being sick & going to work takes so darn much energy.

Ahh, munchies! I do remember the distant past and the late night chili dogs washed down with a huge ice cold beer..LOL Toke away because you can ill afford to lose too much weight. Hugs!

Bosom, I think like April and Minus .. you need to focus on other things and get yourself into a good state , then you can worry about the smoking ,, and I also thought I was going to fight the demon forever and that it was all hopeless .. but it really is not ... when the time comes you will do it !! I have no doubt .. everytime I get a cat scan it shows emphasemic changes in the lower lobes .. I also have copd and take simbicort 2 times a day ... the damage we have done already so don't dwell.... I love ya and you are stronger than ya think ...miss our talks .. xoxoxox
Minus , I am still working crazy , I did two doubles this past week .. talk about tired .. I am not so young anymore ...I am still on antibiotics and go next week to gastro doc to follow up once more . I gotta have colonoscopy .. yuck !!!
As for my friggin truck .. they gave it back alright and it ran worse than when i gave it to them .. so back it went .. now he calls me yesterday and said they put a bad engine in ... and now they need to find another tomorrow .. I tell ya I walk around with a big black cloud hovering over me ... the never ending bad luck .. anyeay grateful for my job and my kids and my grandkids .. xooxoxox

LisaMarie - well at least it sounds like they acknowledged the truck problem was theirs and they'll fix the darn thing w/o charging anymore. I agree - we're not 25 anymore. I can't imagine working doubles. Nods to any of you who still may be young, but... The colonoscopy isn't bad. It's just the prep - getting down all that liquid. I hope you're at least sleeping well. Is it working out OK living with your cousin? I know you're glad to be close to your kids & grands.
Bosum - I'm excited you get to go away. Try to just let all the other stuff go for 3 days. Good luck not smoking around all the "nons".

Ha, ha, MT .... LisaMarie, they are "perky little things aren't they"? At least the "headlights" are working! Bosum, please take care of yourself. I know it is easy for me to say because a "doctor's visit" is covered here in Ontario but you are definitely going through way too much. Now is your "me time". Enjoy your wee holiday!

LisaMarie - proud to see there's no break for smokes. You are amazing.

Did people who smoked before and after their diagnosis tell their doctors?
0 -
emilie - I'd like to think most of us are honest with our docs. a) all of the new patient paperwork I've seen asks if you smoke now or if you used to and when you quit; b) most CT scans will show damage to the lungs; c) many docs are now doing blood tests to confirm - particularly the plastic surgeons because of the effects to skin repair; d) you really can smell it on their clothes if someone smokes.
Are you considering quitting? When you get a chance, go into "my profile" and fill out your data so we can better understand where you are.

Wow Bosum, that doctor should never have treated you that way, despite personal feelings. Shame on her!
I did tell my doctors that I smoked and they helped me quit. Yale, where I was treated had a free smoking cessation clinic for cancer patients and I took advantage of it and they helped a lot. They provided free patches, gum, medication and counseling. I used every method available to me at the same time but it worked.
Feel free to share your struggles. Believe me, we all get it around here. We know this is really hard!

I do know of someone who did lie to their plastic surgeon about her smoking (we had the same doctor). The day of her surgery for reconstruction, they did test her and cancelled the surgery. It was rescheduled and she then did quit smoking for the 6 weeks but had complications with her flap and had to have emergency surgery to fix it.
Smoking with cancer is like smoking while pregnant---often I hear from women--I smoked during my pregnancy and my kid is fine. I want to say--you don't know if your child would be healthier if you hadn't smoked.
Health isn't the absence of disease, it is ultimate well-being. So if health is on a scale from 1 to 10. So if your surgical outcome is a 6--you can say I made it though without problems even though I smoked. But if you hadn't smoked, maybe your outcome would have been an 8.
I do training classes in cessation for doctors and I have heard a lot of stupid statements from them. Most really do not know anything about nicotine dependence and how to treat it. Our medical system is set up with so many specialists that each doctor only knows his/her own body part specialty and yet we don't recognize that what is needed are specialists in cessation, just as there are addiction specialists for alcohol/drug addiction. In my trainings, I ask the healthcare providers what advice do they give drug addicts? (usual answer is treatment), then I ask, nicotine is more addictive than any other drug, so why aren't you giving the same advice about nicotine dependency and helping them to get the treatment they need?

BosumBlues--no, not dating. I realized I needed to really be free of any unresolved feelings (both good and bad) for ex, before moving on.
Although, a girlfriend did tell me something that i found funny----The best way to get over an old man, is to get under a new man.

LOL..VJ, that is exactly the advice my daughter got from her friend after her recent break up with her fiancé. Must be something to it! (wink)

Great funny VJ. I think maybe it should come with an age limit. Or maybe I'm just not interested in the "old men" who are my contemporaries? And I sure don't have the energy for a boy toy. Hmmm. Sorry if that's TMI.

Minus, your language is perfect! LOL...given the closeness of our group, I think we can have a laugh at the absurdity of life and we can handle sex jokes too! xo
Bosum, sometimes the guy you are not very interested in (aka, the good kind guy vs. the bad boy) turns out to be your biggest surprise. It was for me. I never knew since I always was attracted to the bad boy, and in fact married him. This time, the nice guy turns out to be just what the doctor ordered - and he had a "hidden" bad boy after all.
Love to all!

Thanks April for posting the link. How sad that he passed away. I remember when I was very young (mid-20's) and my cousin died from throat cancer. She asked the doctor "should she quit" when she was diagnosed and his response was why bother as she was Stage 4. I remember thinking then "I'll deal with it then f I get lung cancer". How stupid was I and I honestly can't believe I thought like that. I had many other "stupidity" moments in my life until I woke up and said "that's it'!

April - yes thanks for the link.
Judi - I can think of several who made my life better by disappearing. Ugh.
Just got home from a long, lovely lunch with fellow BCO members jbDdayton and Sandra from San Antonio. Some of you may remember jb from this thread. Sandra's DH is here in Houston at MD Anderson in isolation so we whisked her away for a break. None of us had met before and we had lots to talk about. I sure do enjoy meeting BCO folks.

Thank you Minus, I had a very enjoyable lunch. Ladies she is as nice in person as in this thread. Hopefully, we can meet others as time goes on.
I have faithfully followed each persons journey for the past 3 years. I am just not very good at posting. I have kept many of you in prayer as you fought the battle.
Amazing, a cancer diagnosis and I still had trouble quitting. I was able to finally quit when I got a date for my tissue flap surgery and needed to be smoke free for at least 8 weeks. I set a goal at 12 weeks out and succeeded without pulling out my 1/2" of new hair. I will be smoke free 3 years this November. I did previously quit for 3 weeks before my mastectomy, but I relapsed during radiation to smoking about 3 a day. The day after my last radiation I quit and have not smoked since. I knew I could make it when I got through the first week. My mother passed away 2 days before completing radiation and I was trying to quit and make funeral arrangements at the same time. I must have finally been ready; high stress and no smoking, BINGO I made it.
Bosum, if you see this before you leave, I know you can make it this time.

WOW jb, congrats on the 3 years smoke free. We didn't even talk about smoking at lunch but it's quite an accomplishment. Thanks for sharing your 'quit story'.
