Donna-Do you want to go to a seminar with me in Downers Grove on Sunday called "A Holistic Approach to Healing Cancer" ? It is about the Kelley/Gonzalez method of treating cancer with nutrition, etc. that Susanne Somers touts.

MBJ-You are indeed lucky to have such great doctors in your midst. California does seem to have a lot of free thinking doctors who are cracking the barrier of integrative medicine. I hope it spreads to the rest of us! Keep us posted on how things go.

Lorraine-Good to hear from you. Is the wedding season ebbing a bit?

Remember to thank a Veteran on this most important of all American holidays. For those of you who are interested, check out my tribute to vets on my ChicagoNow blog. Link is from my website home page.

For all you brave ladies who have declined hormone therapy. I am nearly finished with my rads. All along I have been most reluctant about doing hormone therapy for years and years. Now I am not a chicken, even elected to do chemo and now rads. But I just can't square taking very strong medications for 5 plus years, especially if there are natural, nutritional alternatives. As I am gearing up to meet with my Onc and defend this position, I was hoping some of you would share how you came to your decisions. Any scientific article links would be most appreciated. Also any books on the subject. Also, my Onc tells me there is NO way to monitor my estrogen levels (I am perimenopausal have had 2 periods in the last year). All of you seem to speak of blood tests that measure your "undetectable" estrogens? Could you please specify what test this is so I can ask for it? I wish I could afford to go to an integrative doctor who could oversee my care. It just is not in the budget. Though my medical doctors are not into the alternative approach, I have found they are willing to do bloodwork for me when I ask.

Though I don't post often, I learn so much from all you brave, alternative pioneers and thank you for it.

    Hi, Patty:

Biotin is great for hair loss. It also helps with nausea prevention and healthy cell growth. Since it does that, I would think it would make it difficult for mutated cells to thrive. I am not a doctor...but I checked all of the research I have on it from school (I'm a nutrition/health major) and I can't find any research connecting biotin to breast cancer growth.

So eat your peanuts - they're loaded with it Smile

Yes - I have used Moroccan Oil - it leaves your hair fabulously silky.  You only need about a pea size amount even for shoulder length hair.  But it's expensive!!  High-end salons carry it.  Here is link

    Hi MBJ!

Yeah, the emu thing is pretty disturbing.

With regard to bhrt, what type and dosage of estrogen are you getting?  What about progesterone?  Is the DHEA oral type?  Did Dr G give you methylating compounds to make sure that any supplemental estrogen metabolizes favorably ?  This is very important.

I have a question for those of you who are supplementing with magnesium. I have had a great reaction to magnesium supplementation, as I suffered for about 5 years prior to my diagnosis with IBS. My nutritionist has placed me on magnesium glycinate supplements which I take orally. I am now mixing in Calcium Citrate 2X daily. However, I have noticed on some internet sites that Magnesium lowers your stomach acid levels significantly, which is not what I want. I've always had problems with getting stomach "bugs", and don' t want to increase my chances to contract H. Pylori or some other illness because I'm keeping my stomach acids unnaturally low.

I read that some of you are using magnesium oil. Is this a better approach? If so, what dosage are you using?

Hi MsBliss!  I am taking BiEst in cream form in BHRL 1.25 mg 2 x day (just started).  He also gave me Pregnenolone in liquid form and DHEA in liquid form.  When he did my blood tests my estrogen was at .5 (Menopause).

Since I went back on magnesium at night, my legs that were bothersome, are more calmer!!!. Marianne,  I was not consistently on magnesium and still have IBS issues and some H pylori indicator in my blood work. I wonder for you if this has anything to  do to some immune issues? I know my immune system is off and still trying to rebuild it since BC and also had IBS issues prior to BC and maybe something nutriotnally can do more for the stomach acid issue. That is what I am trying for myself and also putting some of the L gutamine powder in for the gut. See my Dr today and may have more insight on my gut issues as I have lost weight and know i am not absorbing nutrients.I think autiomatically we have  alow immune system with having IBS issues!!!

Has amyone heard of vitamin K3 to take to help absorb supplements? heard this at a juice bar yesterday from someone who had BC?

    For our Aussie gal pals:

    http://www.robertgammal.com/dentalPersonnel.html

This is the story of a biological dentist who changed his practice after realizing that what he was doing to his patients, was causing severe problems to his own health. This is the same story I heard from one of my one dentists, who put me on the road to exploring this issue.

I cannot stress enough how important I think this message is. Dentists are bringing home mercury on their clothes, shoes, body, and making themselves and their families ill. They are putting these toxins in our mouth, and killing us all. When our immune system is constantly fighting the mouth bacteria from root canals, and the effects of toxic mercury, we are at risk of so many other diseases.

Can't wait until next week when I begin phase one of getting this crap out of my mouth!

DonnaDio:  I have only heard of Vit K1 to assist with vit D3 absorption.

Vivre:  In California there are a group of dentists who are trying to outlaw mercury in fillings here!

On the Dr. Oz show the other day he was talking about the herb saffron and how it might be the way cancer is fought. I have been doing some research and found this: http://foodforbreastcancer.com/foods/saffron

MBJ.. YES,.. heard that too..vit K assisting with Vit D absorption. Interesting to me!

Have a 3 day stool sample test to do to determine if in fact I have leaky gut. I am off of wheat, dairy and most sugar! Using coconut creamer for my ganoderma coffee is a good change also, as I had to get off of half and half! .I am ok on this and can enjoy my morning ritual without sacrifice!!

Good for you vivre..on getting all the mercury out. What will they replace it with?

I was doing some research about Usana to make sure all the products are non-GMO (they are). They have this great section called "ask the scientist" where you can ask all kinds of specific questions and if it is not already answered in the FAQ, a scientist will actually respond. In this section, there was a really good explaination of the soy controversy-one of the best I have read:

    http://obs.usana.com/Main/supportCenterIndex?user=78867&groupId=1

I also got a great explaination when I querried about a PEG in the skin care line. I had read this was a carcinogen, and their reponse set my mind at ease.

The moral of the story is that we hear all kinds of information, good and bad, and sometimes we just have to live and breathe and accept that we cannot overcome it all. For instance, I was recently canning my tomatoes and was concerned about BPA in the canning jar lids. After much research, I decided if there was little BPA in the lids, I could not do anything about it. At least I am using home grown tomatoes! I can't obsess about every little detail.

Kira-if you figure out how to use saffron, let me know.  I have some and never can figure out how to use it. Maybe I will just plant some croci and pick the saffron myself instead of paying the exobinant price in the future.

I just cannot abide Dr. Oz. He is still pushing vaccines like they are candy and he had a show recently that I caught a few minutes of and he was advocating junk food for breakfast.  (all high glycemic). And his number one patient, Oprah, has got to be the unhealthiest celebrity on the planet. If he can't help her, why should I take anything he says seriously?

    Dr. Oz pushes vaccines??? Yikes!!

What kind of food was he advocating for breakfast? I've noticed that even the most nutrition-savvy experts still buy into the "cereal for breakfast" thing. We would all be a lot better off eating a pastured egg or two for breakfast instead of all that grain.

Cereal has got to be the worst! I'm an organic steel cut oats and blueberries girl myself. Love the stuff and even have it for dinner sometimes!

my560sel - I love organic steel-cut oats too, but I only just recently started eating them again (or any other form of grain for that matter). I love it with blueberries too, or with heaps of cinnamon (great natural blood sugar regulator). And, something I never did pre-cancer was that I now stir some grass-fed butter into it for the cancer-fighting CLA's and other nutrients, plus that helps lower the GI (minimal insulin spike!).

Crunchy - I didn't know that about the grass fed butter, I'll have to look into that.... I usually boil the oats in water and then towards the end I squeeze a bit of juice from an orange  into it and then add the blueberries. I sometimes add a sprinkle of homemade granola (oats, almonds, cinnamon, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, unsweetened coconut, honey) on the top.

Mandy, I don't really like milk of any kind whether soy, almond or otherwise so it was my quick fix one morning to add a bit of zing to my oatmeal - I've been having it that way ever  since! I hope you like it.

    Thanks Terri!

The orange juice was delicious in the oats this morning!  It did give it a "zing."

Terri, I will have to try the orange in the oats. I love oats, and have been my go to breakfast most of my life.

The main thing I can think of to do with safron is in rice, I just love the floral taste it adds. Now I have to find some place that sells it here in Florida.

Vivre, I'm beginning to love my Almond Oil.

Use it on the face instead of my regular moisturizer and before putting foundation on. Use it on the sore boob and partner. And use it on my hair after it's been dried - gives the hair a sheen but not "oily". What's left over on my hands, I rub on my neck and arms.

Not to mention.... I'm also cooking with it! Wink
