What I know about cinnamon is stricly anecdotal. My grandmother was middle eastern and cooked from scratch at every meal, always. The staples in her cooking were always garlic, cinnamon, mint, olive oil and lemon. She never made anything without these ingredients. Everything was always incredibly delicious and she lived to be a healthy 102. I haven't heard of cinnamon causing problems, I just know it worked for grandma!

Re safe Tumeric...Here is what I found at Vitamin Shoppe  It is Jarrow Formula's Curcumin 95  500 mg 60 capsules  Supplement Facts   Tumeric Concentrate (Curcumin longa)(18:1)(rhizome)

    Curcumin 380 mg

    Demethoxycurcumin 90 mg

    Bisdemethoxycurcumin 15 mg

Other ingredients Cellulose, silicon dioxide and magnesium stearate (vegetable source) Capsule contains gelatin.   NO wheat, gluten, soybeans, dairy, egg, fish/shellfish or peanuts/tree nuts

Please tell me if I should not be ingesting any of these things!!!!

I read somewhere that for curcumin to "cross the membrane"??!??  you need to take it with an oil like olive oil  and   Bio Perine (from black pepper I think but don't know if using pepper is enough so I bought Natures Plus Bio Perine but not sure how much to take)

Well, I had been taking NSI Turmeric and DH was reading me an email this morning that was talking about it being from China (or ingredients from China) and that it may be or was found to be contaminated.

I will find out more and report back. It is very upsetting to pay for and take supplements that may be harmful!!!!!!! I have decided to get as many of my vitamins and supplements from a local Doctor who is more quality focused. UGH. (They don't have Cinnamon, Turmeric, Grape Seed, Resveratrol, etc.)

Spring I was thinking I was passing on a good source of curcumin since it is soy free, but now I guess I have to wonder WHERE the ingredients came from in the first place.

I agree with your DH's article that ingredients from China could be contaminated and should be scrutinized.....they knew what they were doing when they sent hurricane survivor rebuilders in Florida poisonous wall board....otherwise they would have had the same toxicity problems in their own country.....The USA not that long ago had to turn back another shipment of children's toys from China that were painted with lead paint....so it has to be on purpose....they should know by now about lead paint being banned from kids' toys...After I read that, I threw out all my cute coffee mugs that said made in China because they are probably painted with lead paint.  I found some American Made that are guaranteed not to have lead anywhere in the processing.   Sooooo   anyway   sorry for the rant   noticing more of that since my Hysty/Ooph......So how do we know where the ingredients in our supplements come from???  This just keeps getting harder to figure out!

Thanks to all who share your valuable research with the rest of us.  I have learned so much for you wonderful people!

    Hi Everyone,

Vivre--I do make my own turmeric capsules (and many other types of capsules!).  I mix turmeric with black pepper, and as Luna5 noted, they might best be taken with some type of oil (for best absorption, I guess--I remember reading that in Dr. Servan Shreiber's Anti Cancer book).  Spring, I buy all of my herbs/spices at Mountain Rose Herbs.  They are all organic, and the package tells where they are from.  I just checked out my turmeric, and it's from India.  I also make capsules of matcha green tea (I really want to like the taste of green tea, but I don't!), cloves, cinnamon, acai berry powder, and ginger--none are from China (the stuff I currently have in my cabinet is from India, Madagascar, and Sri Lanka).

I have a capsule maker, which I also bought from Mountain Rose Herbs, and I really like it.  It doesn't make that many capsules at one time (only 24), but it doesn't take that long to make a batch, and it definitely beats doing it all by hand, which I used to do when I only took a couple of capsules every day.  I try to stay away from gelatin, as I am a vegetarian, in part, for animal welfare issues.  Also, there's been so much discussion on this thread about non-organic meat and dairy, and how they may not be the best things for us to consume.  Since gelatin in supplements is also derived from possibly suspect sources, I worry about the effect on my health when I'm downing lots of supplements every day.  I remember reading a while back in The Complete Natural Medicine Guide to Breast Cancer (Dr. Kaur) that we should try to limit the number of supplements that contain gelatin, as too many gelatin capsules might contribute to increased estrogen levels.  I read this a while ago, and I think (and hope) that I'm properly representing the information presented in the book--in any case, it was a definite warning to stay away from too many gelatin capsules.  I am trying not to make myself crazy over every little thing, but I actually even worry about the number of veggie caps I'm consuming.  I know they're made from plant cellulose (definitely not soy), but what's the process by which they're made?!  I'm not sure I even want to know!  In any case, I buy large quantities of veggie caps (1,000--size "00", which I think hold about 1/4 teaspoon per capsule)--also from Mountain Rose Herbs--(No, I don't work for them, but I wish I did so I could possibly get an employee discount!!) and use them in my capsule maker.  Whenever I want to try something new, I can buy a relatively small quantity of the stuff and see if I like taking it.  I do trust that the products I'm getting are organic and high quality, and I like the fact that I am probably not getting any unwanted fillers in my homemade capsules.  I do take a number of other supplements, too, but whatever I can make myself, I do.

I happened to be turning channels and came across a Dr. Chien who was talking about getting those hormone levels checked.  He was saying that our Drs. never do them. (this we know). He was quite convincing, for many medical reasons.  He was talking about men and how their cholesterol levels go down automatically when they have the correct hormone levels, and other things go up.

My husband just tore 2 muscles in his chest for no reason whatsoever. Those are going to be 2 painful operations.  I made an appt. with a bioidentical hormone Dr. for him.  Things are just happening to him from out of the blue.

So here's my question:  They do a blood test, and saliva test, is there a third test I should know about?   Anything I should know about to ask?  Thanks.

Fairy, do you know where the Jarrows are made? I am wondering if I go to Whole Foods if that is any safer? I am going to be more vigilent about supplements and vitamins from now on...

Don't know if I am up to making my own though! But something to consider, Audrey.

About the 2:16 test, I was never sent the results. I wonder if they just send to the Dr. you put down on the paperwork? I need to track that down, plus my second Iodine loading test .Same deal. I do test, i pay for test, I send test in, I don't get results! I think they are CYA and send results to Dr.s. ugh.

Spring:  I know, what's up with doctors and labs not sending us the results of test?  I get a message on my answering machine from a nurse who say's something like "everything looks good" and they think that is all we need to know?!?!  I always have to call and ask for the whole thing to be sent, and they always act like "why do you need that?"  ?!!?#*#*!!

Soapsnug:  awesome great info.  I am so excited about the making your own capsules idea!

Mandy:  I did get heartburn and upset stomach from my Tumeric supplement.  I had to cut down, and am now okay, but I do take it together with my fish oil now also.

As for cinnamon, I will have no problem eating a lot more of that, love it.  I'm sure I could eat a couple teaspoons a day, putting it on everything from oatmeal to soup.

I have a big jar of tumeric powder.  I put a little in a spoon along with some black pepper and a dab of EV olive oil and gulp it all down, followed by a glass of water.  But now, I'm going to have to see where my tumeric comes from.  I bought it at the local Indian grocery store, so I assumed it was from India.

Okay Ladies-Those of you who are taking Vitamin D3 need to watch this video. The doctor says not to take more than 6000 IU of Vitamin A because it uses the same receptors. I myself was taking 20,000 IU-not anymore. Also, why isn't anyone taking Beta Glucan? It increases NK cell activity.

I actually prefer to just eat the tumeric in food! :) I know that means I am not getting it everyday but eating curry (which I love anyway) has the oil and the pepper needed for absorption. I also sometimes just toss a little into what i am eating like scrambled eggs or asian stir-fry--since i can't really taste a little by itself. Also I throw a little cinnamon onto my cereal in the morning...

I will have to chk where it is made. I found out with the shiitake mushrooms I eat all the time that they come from China! I did find local ones at another store nearby but that was surprising. They have started putting where the food comes from on the tag on the shelf so that is helpful.

Does anybody have input on the vitamins and supplements at Whole Foods? Thumbs up, down???

I used the air-power -natural guanefenesin capsules from wholefoods in the past when I had a chest cold and loved them - healthy in three days.  All the ingredients were natural so in that sense, I think whole foods is a great option personally speaking.  However, I also like the hyppocrates LifeGive supplements as a golden standard and then try to find cheaper elsewhere bc they are pricy. For instance that turmeric w/ piperine at lifegive is around 30bucks for 30 units and other places have it for around 16/17 for 30 units but the ingredients aren't always the same as when the process started so a reputable company is important and researching their processing standards just as important.

    Good luck!

Now you all have me checking my supplement labels!  I'm currently using Paradise Turmeric (curcumin).  Any thoughts?

    http://www.paradiseherbs.com/tumeric.html

I've used other Paradise supplements (see their home page), and believe they're both pure and organic.

I've also used Turmeric Force by New Chapter -- another manufacturer I really like.

    http://www.newchapter.com/products/turmericforce

Again, check out their entire website for their product philosphy and what seem like some pretty cutting edge products, but please let me know if I'm missing anything re. quality here.

Mandy, I've never gotten really bad heartburn from either of these, but I definitely have to be sure I have food in my stomach before I take them.

Spring, I've bought Whole Foods or Henry's (a Whole Foods subsidiary and the market we have locally) own brands of D3, Biotin, B6, Vitamin E, and a few other things, and I've always been completely satisfied with them.  I wonder who makes their supplements for them?  Does anyone know?    Deanna

Whole Foods is actually pretty strict about their standards for what foods they will carry in their stores. I would guess that this would carry over for their supplements as well. I find that in general they are high quality all around.

Springtime, I'm in Canada, our Whole Foods has a 15% discount off supplements on Tuesdays.

Maybe yours has the same.  Incentive for me.

I'm new to this thread, just eyeballing everyone's regimes.

I am 5 months out of chemo

    10,000 iu D3

    Vit E 400

    Vit C 7000 mcg

    Vit A 10M units

    Selenium 400 mcg

    I3C 400mcg

    Calcium D Glucarate 1500 mcg

    Sulphorophane 60mcg

    B Complex x 2

    Probiotic

    Fish oil

    Essiac Tea

    NAC (Reduced Glutathione)

    Maitake Mushroom

    Zinc 30mcg

    COQ10  300mcg

I drink DoMatcha powdered Green Tea, cook with Tumeric (add it to salad dressings, soups, hummus...).  I mix the tumeric with pepper and olive oil.  I have a white sink.  It's usually yellow.  Baking soda takes out the yellow!  I add two cloves of garlic to food everyday.  People say I don't stink, so maybe my system has become used to it!!

I have learned to swallow a handfull of pills at once!!

I would like to know everyone's thoughts on juicing.  I have heard the sugar content from juicers that remove the pulp and fiber is way high.  I bought a 3 horse power blender and put my juicer away... Not sure if this is a good move....I would love feedback.

    Take Care you Lovely Ladies!

Deanna, thanks I am going to check out those sites now....

Let - I can also swallow a fistfull of pills at once! When i was a kid I used to gag on one little aspirin. My. How things have changed. :)

Q on the Turmeric. How can you be sure pepper is included? The one I was using from NSI lists "black pepper" in the ingredients. Deanna, the ones you sent, I don't see a listing for "pepper". Help, I may be missing something....

Audrey-thanks for the advice on filling tumeric. I hate the taste, so I am really thinking of making my own, since I know my local Penzey's has a good reputation. I do not like internet shopping, but I will check out buying the caps there.

PS-I will have to check out your recommendations next time I am at WF. I love the store, but it sure does cost me a lot to walk in the door. They had some great organic honeycrisp apples last week, but they cost almost a buck a piece.

Makingway-I just got a great flyer from my compounding pharm on the importance of Beta Glucan.  It sounds like a good one to add.

Fairy- I have noticed a marked deterioation of my vision recently. I am wondering if it has anything to do with I3C/DIM. It does not make sense that something from ground broccoli would cause a problem, but here is what got me to thinking: We know that DIM does the same thing as tamox, and we also know that some women have had extreme vision loss on tamox. By deduction, could it be possible that I3C could affect the vision too, just as tamox does? Anyway, I have decided not to take it for a while and see what my next blood tests show. I feel so secure with the iodine and everything else, that this one does not worry me so much.

LetItBe-welcome. It will be interesting to get your Canadian perspective too. As for juicing vs blending, they both have plusses and minuses. The juicer gets the concentrated nutrients into the system fast since they do not need much digesting. The blender gives you all the fiber, and important nutrients in the skins. I wish I could do either. I just cannot get into drinking anything but water and green tea. I cannot even swallow viscous liquids. I wish I could get over it.

As far as what brands to use of supplements. I think it is important to read the label carefully. I sometimes bring a mag glass because the writing is so small(bad eyes!) I try to keep changing brands. That way if it is not so great, I will not be wasting my money.

I am currently looking into a supplement that my ND promotes that has everything in it. But you have to drink it, so I am hesitant. I will let you know if I try it. It would sure be easier than taking so many pills.

I find that I get used to drinking things that I don't particularly like. I used to really not like the taste of fresh vegetable juice. I added more greens and found a good balance and forced myself. Now, I wouldn't say I love it, but I can manage it OK. I do both juicing and smoothies everyday. THe smoothie starts my day. The fresh juice I do late afternoon before dinner. It is the best way for me to know I am getting in all of the nutrients I need.

A powdered drink may not be so bad if it includes everything. Sometimes there are fillers in there too so be careful. It is really hard some days to swallow all of those pills! Once in a while I take a pill vacation for a day or two and don't take anything! I like those days! But, I am always eager to get back on track.

Thanks for the input on juicing!  Maybe I will take my juicer out of hiding once in awhile.  I think perhaps it's just one more time prep thing.  The blender is so easy and it washes up fast.  Juicing the pulp etc, more mess...Okay, I'm just being laaaazy.

Is anyone taking tamoxifen as well as all these supplements?  I am on tamoxifen.

I have read that grapefruit interferes with tamox.  This may be old news for many of you, or for this really long thread.  Just thought I'd put it out there just in case.  My ND also advised to stay away from oranges.  Lemon juice in salads etc is okay.

Also, is it necessary to take both I3C and DIM?  I thought one would be sufficient?

I will look up Beta Glucan (thanks for the extra pill!)

Good Night Ladies!  Glad I found you!

vivre ~  Interesting that you bring that up about vision!   I just noticed yesterday that the uncorrected vision in my bad eye (vision is worse in one) seems worse, but I chalked it off to chemo.  I hadn't considered I3C.  I'm also off it for a bit pre-surgery, so will try to see if I notice any immediate improvement, although I suppose it won't really be long enough to tell.

Spring ~ Does the tumeric formulation have to have black pepper in it, or would consuming black pepper throughout the day be enough?  If it's supposed to have it in it, I think I'll email both of those manufacturers and ask them, what's up?

    Welcome, Let-It-Be!    Deanna
