I want to give another exercise plug. Years ago, I heard Richard Simmons speak. He said that each person should get at least 4 hours of aerobic exercise and 3 hours of toning in a week. At first I thought, "How in the world could a person with a busy schedule possibly find enough time to do that!!!" But then I thought this; "There are 168 hours in a week. If I do devote 7 of them to exercise, that still leaves 161 hours. Really, I should be able find time to do that." And, if you look at it that way, and plan for it, it can work. And it doesn't all have to be superwomen feats of endurance; it could include doing some sit ups, leg lifts, pushups etc. or marching in place while you watch the news, sneaking in some 15 minute walks at lunch etc. Besides all the other physical and mental health benefits, I know they have helped me with the Al SEs. If I go more than 2 days without some sort of toning/light weight activity, that's when I really start to feel creaky. I get going again and then feel OK. As far as the tummy goes, as Richard says, "You ate the Munchies, now you gotta do the Crunchies!" Smile 'Night All! Ruth

Gosh, after reading the article that MTG gave us, it seems if we don't exercise and be within the normal range weight wise, we may as well stop taking the pill, because as I understand it, if we get chubby, the pill aint gonna work!

Need help from Arimidex takers, have any of you had a sudden onset of lower right back pain?..I've been dealing with what I thought might be a strain (although, I can't remember doing anything to cause this) for about a week..Worse at night!..Could it be Arimidex?....Thank you for an input....

regarding MTG article on BMI and effectiveness of ALS.  I know it can't be this simple, but why can't they (drs) increase doses for heavier (higher BMI) womern?

Sunflowers - I have been feeling a little off balance lately. I have only been on Arimidex for two weeks so not sure if that is what is from. It would be interesting to hear if anyone else has this problem. I attributed this to having four surgeries in a year with general anestesia. Maybe it's not from that. BTW I am 52.

Claire, wow good on you in the Classic, best of luck!  You brought up just what I have in mind at the moment...the abadabas...I'm wondering if my recent weightloss ~20 is piled up and weightlessly distending its loveliness in the bell.  I've lost weight before and always went flat in that area, what the heck is this pooch!  I guess I have to face it, crunch or else, it's a cruel world!

My balance isn't great on a good day!  But that's because I don't have good binocular vision and it affects my ablility to go down stairs.  Noticed yesterday when I picked up my event packet yesterday and Wednesday when I did my Queen Anne Hill walk with Trader Joe's run and hauled those groceries down the hill and long staircase.

I can cycle just fine though although can't get on my ride from all the angles that most people can.  Again, nothing new.

Until the bottoms of my feet unstarch themselves, I can't wear my sexy summer open toed mules.  But not a problem this year as I have been more likely to need the heavy socks here in this cool Seattle summer.  I miss my pink suede Pradas with silver grommets!

    Thanks for the good wishes.

Does anyone else crunch on an exercise ball????   I find this really helps with core stability with or w/o A.  It takes a bit of time to get the hang of things, but 100 oblique crunches and 100 straight crunches each weekday fix the abs issue plus help balance.  Tones the waistline too!

Then I get on the floor and do raises with ball between knees and lower legs.  This gets at the one part of legs that cycling doesn't....my inner thighs.

By this time tomorrow, my friend Amanda and I will already have completed a good portion of the Seattle-to-Portland.

As for getting on a bicycle, I recently had to take my hybrid on a ride after riding my road bike all winter.  Talk about being a loser!!!  It took about 5 miles for me to get the hang of things again on it.  Now I am fine on both.  So it might just be a case of going to an empty parking lot and practicing.  Based on my experience, I wouldn't bring my friends to watch though.....

I also have balance issues on Arimidex. On standing, getting out of bed, going up and down stairs and even walking on an incline. Luckily it doesn't happen every day and the days that it is quite bad I rest.  I also have ear aches sometimes.  Anyone else? Love n hugs.

I remember a friend said she had trouble on the stairs when she started taking it. She has never mentioned it since so I don't know if it resolved itself or if she just started hanging on to the rails. I'll ask her when I see her.

I had real balance issues while on A. I'm on a sabatical for a month and I can't believe how much better I feel and how much energy I have. Will have to consider deeply starting again especially with this information about effectiveness if you are over weight. I am and I've tried extremely hard since I finished Rad to loose it to no avail. I started A less than a week after Rad.

Hi Sunflowers, Don and all of us with balance issues,

I have been on Arimidex for one year now. I exercise religiously... walk 2 3/4 mile 7 days a week, swim 30 minutes 3 x week, do hard gardening 1 hr a day and all my own housework (does that count?). I am holding my own but just don't get any stronger. I used to ride bike 10 miles a day but feel too unsteady (weak?) to ride except around the block :-(

Sometimes I literally careen from place to place. I have to consciously "get my balance." NEVER used to be unsteady. It's a catch 22... the more unsteady I am the more insecure I feel so the more unsteady I am. I am always looking for shoes that work better, fit better, help me get my balance better. I notice my toes are working harder to keep me balanced... so much so that by nightfall they are sore from curling and gripping to steady me.

I keep pushing myself to do more, make the greater effort. Some days I wonder if I just quit would I feel better? But sitting is not the solution... I flit from recliner to couch to dining room chair looking for new positions for comfort. Otherwise hips and back start to hurt :-(

My strength and endurance have been replaced by perseverance and an appreciation for physics (levers, wheels, pulleys, etc).  Brain has replaced brawn and I recently had to hire someone to move my china cabinet... quite a blow for a chronic furniture rearranger!

Does anyone think this is a phase that will pass?

Hi PJ, SF, Don and all with balance issues

I lost my balance also, sometimes because I feel dizzy, or not focussed on avoiding those walls that jump out and hit me!!

One thing that has helped somewhat, is going barefoot around the house, foot exercises and foot massage.

On the new studies about weight and A, I was glad to see they mentioned a need for a study for weight-related dosages.

Although they mention that heavier women have a greater risk of reoccurance even with A, I don't know what the stats are if you don't take it at all. From what I read it gives you an edge no matter what -- but how much that edge is worth if you're having serious SE's is something everyone will have to decide for themselves.

On lower back pain:  I had it when I was in the first months of A but it went away.  I'm about 5 months in now.

On balance, I only have small issues with it -- I'll stumble a bit for no reason or something equally silly -- but it's rare.  I have to watch bending over because I can get dizzy if I stand upright too fast.  My few moments of balance issues are frustrating and embarrassing enough that I empathize with those who deal with it more often.  Sunflowers, I don't think 65 is old (maybe because I'm 58!) and this seems to be a common enough SE that I'm ready to blame the A.

I gained more weight during treatment than I like to admit (20-25#) and have been very frustrated by my lack of energy/strength to get back to where I was but I keep plugging away, even though it's sporadic right now.  I do notice a difference in my SE's when I can stick to exercise so I do what I can and trust that with time things will improve.  Anything is better than nothing.  I also think my diet helps:  I eat very light meals, mostly veggies, fruits and whole grains.  I'm not only losing weight (slowly, but steadily now) but I think (but can't prove) that eating little animal products of any kind helps a lot. I have an advantage of lower appetite because of the A and/or another med I'm on, and my taste for some of the things that used to be weaknesses (like cheese) has changed.

Claire, hope the Classic was great!  I lived in Portland for 2 years, really miss the PNW!

Pam - I sure hope it is a phase and will pass soon! Wow - you are pretty active. I just started working out again after being off for three months. I've got to say that is pretty tough but I push myself through it because I know it will be of some benefit. Hopefully it keeps the SE's and weight away. We'll see.

Sunflower, if you get crazy and go off on your bike, bring your cell phone with; as you are right, cows are not very sympathetic to people's problems; probably because we eat them!!!!

    JOYKEC,

Me too!  I since I started chemo 11/24/09 I have not been able to eat any meat, chicken, fish, pig, etc.  or any animal fat.  I cook meats for my family but always make sure to have something for me too eet too.  I have lost 50 pounds since September 2009.  I am now an ovo, lacto-vegetarian.  I have been since bout 11/24/09  Good luck with your treatments.  I have little appetite.

I exercise for 2 hours a day at least 5 days a week.  I do weights, stretching, and aerobics - running, bike, rowing, etc.  It's been my 'therapy' and has gotten me through the sucky times.  I saw Onc today and start back on A tomorrow.  I hope SE do not return.  I found out that I have had an 11.7% bone loss in less than a year and have severe osteoporosis...Hum...do you think the heel fracture was related to my bone density now???  I see a bone specialist in August but in the mean time will start with a daily oral biophosphonate.  Sometimes it seems like the sucky news just doesn't stop.  Oh well...Onc feels absolute benefit from A is worth taking provided we can stop the bone loss.  It reminds me of the BP oil spill!  I hope it works!

    I made it to Portland!!!!!

No mishaps other than needing more energy foods than normal, but knew that going in.  Also ibuprofen and Aspercreme for my knees.  Will take about 4 days for my body to re-adjust, but none the worse for wear right now other than being very sore of butt.

One thing I did learn that might help is that when I am properly hydrated and have eaten, it also helps with knee soreness.  Just "food" for thought.

Other fun thing is that we stayed in a hotel that was a converted bordello, so finally know what those "upstairs rooms" at Dodge City were like.  That is, except that we had much better beds.

No need for AC....in fact the guys sleeping in tents froze.  Convo at latte joint was beyond funny.

Knees are fine this AM BTW.  Mainly butt and feeling depleted.  Thrilled to have done this. - Claire

My Mom has been on arimidex for over 3 years now and has been told she has to be on it for a total of 10. I am getting concerned as she is experiencing many of the side effects: insomnia, general feeling of malaise, severe joint pain only to name a few.  Not sure what to do. Any suggestions would be great. All I know is that she has a decreasing quality of life since being on this drug. She keeps saying that she feels like she is 90 years old. I hate seeing her like this and I am desperate to do what I can so she can start living.

A friend of mine just had her Arimidex refilled and said she got the generic brand of Arimidex.  Does anyone know if the generic is out yet?  I was told not until 2012.
