I'll chime in on the Penguin Cold Caps. They worked great for me! I'm nearly a year out from my last chemo and earlier this month the woman who was styling my hair at the hair salon remarked on how much hair I had. If she only knew!

Hey guys hope everyone is doing well I'm 19 1/2 weeks PFC seem to have stopped shedding and have lots of new growth everywhere. Still need to have my hair tied back when in public because I feel it's too thin but it's growing by the day. Now to enjoy my boys who are on summer holidays and hopefully by the time school goes back my hair will be at a stage that I'm happy with. Have a great day everyone.

    Tshire-

Wow! I wouldn't be able to tell you lost any hair at all!

I haven't had as much luck. I have two pretty big bald spots on the top sides and could really rock a mullet unfortunately. However, I still have hair so I am trying to power through the PCCs for my last 2 rounds!

Has anyone had success with thick hair? I'm looking to do the penguin cold caps I'm in Canada and I have to rent them which will be expensive I don't think they are offering grants from where I live, no one here has even tried the caps, I just don't want to spend a fortune if my hair type won't work.

I have thick Asian hair and lost about 60% after round 1. I still have a small handful left though and am waiting to see what happens in the next couple weeks. I'd be curious to hear about other people with thick hair. It's pretty hard to get the temp so low for thick hair (they told me -34) so maybe that has something to do with the success rate?

I have thick hair and had great success with PCC. I probably lost 30% - 40% of my hair but since it was so thick to begin with most people could not tell. I also lost almost all my hair about my ears but my other hair covered that up. My facility did have a freezer so I could get the temp to -34. Here is a pic of me 11 weeks after my last chemo. My hair was super grey too and my hairdresser has dyed it with no ammonia dye twice in that time. I am so so happy I used PCC and kept my hair. It was a long road but worth it for me.

melb44 - you look great! Would you (and anyone else who is finished!) mind posting your pic/story over on the success thread, too, please? Thanks!

Do you want me to post my success story now or after I stop shedding? I figured I'd post there in a few months with a 100% "after" shot.

I am now through 4 rounds of AC (this is week 11) and start 12 weekly Taxol on 12/23. I have lost maybe 2% of my hair but my mom says it looks more like normal shedding (I keep it in a ziplock bag). I am nervous about capping for 12 more times as it has emotionally been hard on me and I am worried I won't have as good of a result as I have had so far. Here is a funny face pic from today. image

    LRF,

    Looking good!!!!

I'm now nearly 8 mo past final taxol and went to a color and trim today my stylist was commenting how thick my hair is...( I gave naturally curly hair)! So she shaped it for me .... But Thick!! I loved hearing that

Wow Melb, you look great! I remember when you first started! I'm so glad the caps worked for you! It's great to see another AC T success story!

LRFTexan, wow 2% - that's wonderful! Hang in there!

LRFTexan - Love the funny face, great to see a smile from the chemo room! I just did #5 today of 12 weekly Taxol, post AC. I was worried too but it is going really fast! As for results, I have lost quite a bit of hair now, probably 40%, I think the chemo just builds up over time. But I still have hair so I'm "capping-on"!!!

    Thanks everyone.

Angie - you were such a HUGE help to me! Seeing you be successful made me realize it could be done with ACT.

dancetrancer - I will put up my story and pictures soon. Thank so much for setting up that thread. It is such a great resource!

Good luck to all the ACT cappers. The 12 weeks of Taxol is so much easier on your hair. You are in great shape if you make it through the AC portion and still have enough hair for it to be worthwhile.

ladies I know we have talked about this before but when doing the weekly taxol how did you handle washing your hair? If we aren't supposed to do it 3 days before or after that makes it hard. Is anyone doing twice a week? All advice appreciated. Thanks

LRFT...I did wash twice a week during Taxol. My infusions were on Wednesdays. I normally washed Monday morning & then again either Friday or Saturday depending on what I had going on for the weekend. Hope this helps!

thank you ladies. I start on a Wednesday because of Christmas but my infusions for the most part will be on Thursday so I think based on your feedback I will wash Tuesday and Saturday. Ive been shedding a little more the last couple of days but at least I am done with the AC. Headed to get my prescription for Latisse renewed now! Hope you have a great weekend

Krista21, I have very thick hair, very course and wavy. I've had two treatments of TC and my next is tomorrow. On days 18-20 after my first round, I lost what seemed like a lot of hair, including two small chunks, but it is absolutely not noticeable, even to me. Since then I've had a normal amount of shedding, typical of a normal comb-out or wash. I am absolutely convinced that the cold caps are worth it, even though they are MISERABLE! With thick hair, if you're using Penguin brand, you have to get them down to -36 degrees C. I am following ALL their recommendations--no caffeine, I always use a detangler, wash in cool water, no heat styling, the works. The caps are expensive but absolutely worth it if you'd be as devastated as I was at the thought of losing my hair.

Sara208--I followed all the protocol as far as being gentle with my hair, only shampooing twice a week with cool water, no blowdrying or curling irons. But I didn't give up caffeine! And I still kept my hair.

Thank you Leslienva, I han no idea toppik existed!

I'm having some anxiety over the holidays i don't know if this is chemo brain or just anxiety but I'm forgetting things.... anyhow, I'm happy to share that my last chemo will be on January 5th. And I still have some hair, big bald spot on the top and sides but enough in the front... wore a binnie yesterday for the first time and will try toppik.

Thank you all sweet, strong ladies for taking time to support other women.

    Happy holidays everyone!

Hopeismyname, my last chemo was January 5 this year. We must've been on the same schedule, a year apart! Toppik worked really well on covering my one spot--which of course was in the front!

The chemo is definitely responsible for your forgetting things. I felt foggy for months!

Happy Holidays! For those of you still on chemo, it WILL get better!
