I'll have to pass on Saturday. I have a long-standing commitment to take my aunt to a ribbon-cutting for a new community/arts center (she's 84!). But if a few of you can get together, then definitely go for it and tell us all about it! I'll make it next time!

Janet, I read that in the book too and froze!! how exciting it was! I called my buddy who is a priest ( he's in VA too ) and talked to him about it. I thought it would make an amazing sermon for him....tying in stresses of our modern lifestyles and the healing of the rosary. It talked about the breathing....inhaling as when the priest speaks his part...then exhaling through the part which would be your response. I practice meditation and now also use the rosary to get me where I need to be. This also was the catalyst for me to explain the rosary to my kids. They understand that it can help them on many levels now and as a family we pray it together at least once a week.....fairly unusual for kids these days. There is a book called The Relaxation Response that cites similar information. It was something that helped me tie things together. Faith can be so elusive sometimes. This made it seem very tangible...if that makes sense.

Geewiz - exactly right!
I won't do this justice - you really have to read the book as it gives all the detailed background research studies, the biology, etc. But, it has been proven that uncontrolled & persistent stress produces hormones that create havoc with white blood cells that release inflammatory chemicals. Natural disease-fighting capabilities shut down rather than attacking viruses or cancer cells. Study after study show that feelings of helplessness, depression, fear, negative thoughts, lack of support systems can create this chemical chain reaction. And research results are pretty dramatic where people who master the stress response live twice as long (studies of cancer patients -including bc). It's not as simple as saying "I'm going to have a more positive attitude." You have to learn how.
Five thousand years of Eastern medicine focus inward on 'the self in the present' turning away the outside forces & worries that cause stress with yoga, meditation, tai chi, etc. You master the physiological changes (not letting the immune system break down) by controlling breathing, heart rate - the keys to bring calm and mellowness. The same physiological result is achieved by Tibetan monks, chants, yoga masters and ...saying the Rosary. Again, this summary really doesn't do it justice - probably 50 pages to read. But the lesson I took away is that it is a lot more than 'being positive' - you have to train yourself to master the techniques to achieve inner calmness and the results are everything from sleeping better, positive feelings of well being, strong immune system, etc. I have a feeling I'm not explaining this well

Janet,
You did a beautiful job explaining! The bodies fight or flight nervous system response is quite fascinating. I was just talking today about increased cortisol levels and stress. Now that I am in my new place, I am finally ready to start listening to a CD my MD gave me which is about physiological quieting, or as I call it soothing oneself. Salve for the our "insides."
One example that is medicine based is the class of meds called beta blockers, which slow the heart rate down along with lowering pressure. I was speaking with a Psychiatrist colleague a few years back, and she was saying some MD's were starting to use Beta Blockers for people who had suffered trauma right after the incident. The goal was to help keep a person's nervous system from going into fight or flight for pro-longed states setting up for PTSD. This would be before talk therapy in the first few days...another example is the use of a beta blocker right before public speaking by some people. Your nervous system just does not go into hyper mode...it blunts that sympathetic response. It's interesting to study sympathetic vs parasympathetic nervous system responses, which is our fight or flight. I am going to do a little studying up on cortisol, adrenals and stress response too.
and this example is one of medical interventions, and absolutely one can train themselves into physiological quieting, saying Rosary and being present in each prayer said.
I think this is a super topic, and a very healthy goal.
so I think you knocked it out of the ball park Janet!

Hi All,
My son lives in Alexandria and I often go to visit -- but can't this weekend due to other home commitments and that my son's daughter (my granddaughter) is pretty sick this week and started the week off with a 102 fever. So, I don't want to get exposed...and expose others. As a result, I'm staying clear of Alexandria and won't be able to come. Sorry! But, I'm hoping we can do another time with a bit more notice. Have a great time, at least one hug from me to all of you!
I have read Anit-Cancer at least 3 times now and each time pick up more information. I've worked on the organic and better eating, am working on the exercise (water exercise several times per week at the nearby community center), and now want to work on the inner self to reduce stress. I did read about the rosary and think you have to say it out loud in a group setting (like with your family) - it's not as therapeutic saying it inside your head. Years and years ago when I was little I noticed that when my old Italian aunts would get together to make "home mades" that the rhythm of rolling the dough over and over was hypnotic. They'd be speaking Italian in low tones (so I didn't understand what the heck they were saying) and rolling, kneeding, rolling, kneeding and it would lull me into a quiet trance....very relaxing and I remember falling asleep at the table. I think it worked for them too. So the "routine" and "repetitiveness" without having to concentrate is probably what's happening with saying the rosary out loud in a group. I think when I was in Catholic school and we recited the rosary that's why the nuns made us kneel - so we wouldn't keel over to sleep. LOL
Hugs to everyone!
Pat

Pat,
I think we can certainly look forwards to meeting again in the future. I hope our other sisters may have cause to come this way....for example, if someone's children are selected to receive an award in the Nation's Capitol I think some of your children are on the way to this.
That being said, there is another way we meet weekly, and I will be hear for prayers on Friday. I'm wondering if Theresa, you could re-post your Surrender Prayer as I would love to start with reading it.
Do we have two or three people we would like to pray for?
Have a beautiful safe day all.
Traci
(Marie, can you send a cardboard cut out of Tinkerbell in your place on Saturday? I'll put her right next to me....if I drove I could use her for the HOV lane

TRACI..LOL!!! I will see what I can find.... ..... so looking forward to the next time though..
Janet, you did do a great job of explaining it I am going to have to get that it sounds wonderful and has a lot of good information. I just read never every page though but the newest adition book by DR.Susan Love and she also says in the book how our bodies environment has a lot to do with reoccurance and cancer starting in the first place. She described it as the cells being children and the surrounding tissue a neighborhood. She says a "bad" cell in a good neighbor will ususally stay dormant, but when the neighborhood changes there is ikely to be trouble.I really liked her anology. She stated stress diet exercise all added to the value of the neighborhood.. very good read too!
well ladies off to exercise to help keep my neighborhood good
Have a blessed day
Hugs
Maria

Good morning all!
I just had my onc appointment... exercise was my "scolding". I talked to her about environmental factors to our family cancer and she said definitely could be a link. We are no longer eating off the farm, chemicals in our food in the air etc, chronic stress (job & commute). Seems like I'm creating a bad neighborhood! :-\
Traci - yes, I will repost the Surrender Prayer... when I'm at home.
Prayersareanswered might be able to join us on Saturday. We need to firm up a time and place. Skip will be coming with me... we'll be leaving Fredericksburg about 1 from our SFO meeting... we could be in Alexandria around 2ish. I think. Yes, we'll have to make another reunion after this one and give the ladies plenty of notice.

Healing Prayer of Surrender
Dear Lord Jesus, it is my will to surrender to you everything that I am and everything that I'm striving to be. I open the deepest recesses of my heart to you and invite your Holy Spirit to dwell inside of me.
I offer you my life, heart, mind, body, soul, spirit, all my hopes, plans and dreams. I surrender to you my past, present and future problems, habits, character defects, attitudes, livelihood, resources, finances, medical coverage, occupation and all my relationships.I give you my health, disabilities, physical appearance, home, family, marriage, children, sexuality and friendships. I ask you to take Lordship over every aspect of my life. I surrender to you all my hurt, pain, worry, anxiety and fear, and I ask you to wash me clean.
I release everything into your compassionate care. Please speak to me clearly, Lord. Open my ears to hear your voice. Open my heart to commune with you more deeply. I desperately need to feel your loving embrace. Shut the doors that need to be shut and open the doors that need to be opened. Set my feet upon the straight and narrow road that leads to everlasting life. Amen.

Theresa,
Thank you so much for re-posting this. It is such a deep deep prayer. I honestly haven't prayed as such before. I don't know if we have a cut and paste guru (Paula?) to archive it.
and I am sending my PM confirmation...how great that prayers may be able to go!
just a nudge to see if anyone has urgent prayer requests for tomorrow night, or wants to share their thoughts or own prayers. I will be here at 10:00 PM, and will say the Surrender Prayer first. It is very cleansing.
till tomorrow !

Hello Anne & welcome! Your post gave me idea for us to offer prayers for our sons & daughters & all youth tonight. So many needs and they have their own challenges physical or otherwise - wondering if the "American dream" is slipping away and all the pressures they face in today's world, bc hanging over their heads, etc.
I'm still praying every day Pope John Paul will choose a Stage IV bc woman for his miracle to sainthood and to our Lord Savior for a CURE !!

Welcome Anne! We will prayer for your son.
Janet - that's a good idea for a prayer theme tonight. I know I try to say the rosary every day to bring my children and my husband's children back to the faith. I worry about the effects our generation had on the next few generations and it's my form of "penance" for anything I may have done or did not do.
Traci - I already archived the prayer. :-) Great minds think alike!
Today is the feast day of Our Lady of Lourdes
From Universalis.com
In 1858 the immaculate Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette Soubirous, near Lourdes in France, in the cavern called "de Massabielle." Through this poor, fourteen-year-old girl, Mary calls on sinners to change their lives. She has inspired in the Church a great love of prayer and good works, especially in the service of the poor and the sick. See the articles in the Catholic Encyclopaedia and Wikipedia.
I am discerning a lot of things, sisters. We are attending our first SFO meeting tomorrow in VA - a group in Fredericksburg, which is a good distance from home, but worth it if the group is a good fit for us! Then on to Alexandria!! But I'm also discerning (as you have heard me whine before) a career change and I *may* have found it. I'm trying to find a college (online preferably because of our schedule) to get a masters in psychology and specifically psychosocial oncology and even more specificially, the spiritual healing for those of us having to walk the walk of cancer. So I hope you will continue to keep me in your prayers, because I feel your prayers working in my life! Thank you all!!
Pat - I wanted to comment on your kneading visual but got caught up in the week. I love to bake bread and find good therapy in kneading bread. It's rhymical and physical and my mind gets lost while doing it. Our foremothers had a good thing going there!
Have a blessed day!

Oh Theresa!
I am so so excited for you! I look forwards to hearing all about this journey you are on, in "real time."
As we welcome Anne, and Janet, I love your idea of praying for our sons and daughters and all youth tonight.
Anne, I am so happy you find comfort as I do here. A parent always knows best, and trusting your intuition regarding you son shows you are very present with him. He is Blessed to have you watching over him.
so, may I ask to add prayers for our Sister Theresa in your Spiritual journey to be guided in her new direction? I bet someone else can put it a lot better than I just did, but I would like to make sure we add our energy to Theresa's vision.
see you tonight!

Lord, let us not forget that we are all children of God. Tonight we pray for our youth -- our children and grandchildren. Send them special blessings and lighten their burdens so that they can remain childlike at heart regardless of age. Protect them when we cannot. Ease the fears, worries and uncertainties they face and let them trust in you to cope and thrive. Amen.

A Prayer for Children
We pray for the children
who sneak popsicles before supper,
who erase holes in math workbooks,
who can never find their shoes. And we pray for those
who stare at photographers from behind barbed wire,
who can't bound down the street in a new pair of sneakers,
who never "counted potatoes,"
who are born in places where we wouldn't be caught dead,
who never go to the circus,
who live in an X-rated world. We pray for the children
who bring us sticky kisses and fistfuls of dandelions,
who hug us in a hurry and forget their lunch money. And we pray for those
who never get dessert,
who have no safe blanket to drag behind them,
who watch their parents watch them die,
who can't find bread to steal,
who don't have rooms to clean up,
whose pictures aren't on anybody's dresser,
whose monsters are real.We Pray for the Children
who spend their allowance before Tuesday,
who throw tantrums in the grocery store and pick at their food,
who like ghost stories,
who shove dirty clothes under the bed,
who never rinse out the tub,
who get visits from the tooth fairy,
who don't like to be kissed in front of the carpool,
who squirm in church and scream in the phone,
whose tears we sometimes laugh at and
whose smiles can make us cry.And we pray for those
Whose nightmares come in the daytime,
Who will eat anything
Who have never seen dentist,
Who aren't spoiled by anybody,
Who go to bed hungry and cry themselves to sleep,
Who live and move, but have no beingWe pray for the children
Who want to be carried and for those who must,
Who we never give up on and for those who don't get a second chance. We pray for those we smother and for those who will grab the hand of
anybody kind enough to offer it.0 -
Lord - we see you working through Theresa in sorting out her future. Gently guide her on her path. Amen.

Janet,
Thank you for your very powerful prayer that reminds me of how easy my life is. I tried to picture a big beautiful white/silver blanket that simultaneously covered all of the children in the world, to tuck them in and keep them safe.
God Bless.
