Tonight at choir practice we were running through the new Mass settings that we all have to sing starting the first Sunday of Advent because of the new translations of the New Roman Missal. Hasn't the Vatican heard about old dogs and new tricks? LOL Frank, we've heard that the church in Ireland is rebelling and isn't making the changes. Is that true? We also heard that the priests' union (who knew there was such a thing) in Australia is also refusing to cooperate. It's a shame that we're seeing such division within the church over this.
Sheila, I actually grew up in England so I really don't enjoy the Canadian winters or embrace winter sports to the same extent as those who were born here...like my husband and kids. We did have an odd winter last year - we had snow in December and it all melted over Christmas break which was really disappointing for the kids because they couldn't get out skating or tobogganing over the school break. My 8 year old had a field trip on January 3 to go showshoeing and there was no snow! I wouldn't mind winter so much if it wasn't so long! Maybe it could start December 1 and end on January 2...that would suit me!
Frank, I hope you get to the bottom of your strange S/E soon.
Racy, Amen. Thanks for the update.
Had a reaction to Taxol at my second infusion today. Within 5 minutes of starting the Taxol IV, I had trouble breathing. The nurse heard me coughing and asked if I was okay. Before I could answer her, I felt a hot flush moving up my body to the top of my head. It was really weird. They immediately stopped the IV, then they gave me a steroid and restarted the Taxol very slowly. It was okay the second time. I only have two more tx to go so please pray that I'll be able to tolerate the Taxol and get through them!0 -
Ladies, I am at the chapel now and mass starts in 25 minutes. I will post more later.
Michelleo13, the new missal has already been adopted in Australia, at least in my State.
Our bishops do have disagreements with Rome from time to time. The most frustrating was the ban imposed several years ago on communal reconciliation (third rite)
which was extremely popular here. It is a great shame we don't have it anymore. (When will we have on line confession? LOL)
Our Cardinal is very conservative.0 -

Racy, can't wait to hear more about the Mass.
It's interesting to hear that your state has adopted the new Missal already, I'll have to let our priest know! He came to our choir practice a couple of weeks ago. I think he was worried that we were going to rebel because we were finding the music for the new mass settings that the Bishop has mandated for our diocese very challenging to learn. It's very organ/piano based and our choir has two guitarists and no piano player. Every parish in our diocese has to sing them starting November 27 until January 2013! On the postitive side, we have a long time to get really good at them.
As for the other changes that are coming, we don't know yet what they are. In Canada, we aren't allowed to use them until the first Sunday of Advent. We're allowed to sing the new parts of the mass and have already started to do that but the other changes are still secret! The first Sunday when they make all the changes should be interesting!0 -
Michelle, keep benadryl handy. I had reactions to the chemo, I would start to get real flush on my neck and face when it would start to spread to my arms I had to start taking benadryl. It usually lasted the first couple of days after treatment only.
We are starting to relearn the parts too. The Glory to God is going to be tough to switch gears on....

kay1963 sorry to hear that you are having so many SEs. I'm not having anything near those SEs and it's only in that one joint. The fact that I'm having no pain is baffling my GP. How are the Phillies doing? Ireland unfortunately were beaten by Wales in the ¼ final of the Rugby World Cup - I have to say that Wales on the day were the better team.
Michello13 I have heard that there are a few priests in Ireland who are refusing to adopt the changes particularly the new wordings. Our parish priest has already introduced them. The changes to the Readings were introduced last Sunday for the first time. Guess who was the unlucky person to be reading at 10 30am mass last Sunday? Yip you got it in one - me ! !
The church hierarchy in Ireland are all "Yes men."
At the sign of peace we no longer say "peace be with you - (reply) and also with you" but rather "and with your spirit" What's that about. As for "consubstantial with the father" ! ! ! Well if you are an Aramaic language philosopher or an academic in the University of Ulan Bator in Outer Mongolia lecturing on post menopausal Egyptian Hieroglyphics you will probably be jumping up and down and making the "Woo Hoo" noise.
I don't know how things are on your side of the pond but over here church attendances are falling dramatically. We used to have 6 masses at the weekend. Now we have 4 and even with that there are plenty of spare seats at 2 of the masses and some spare seats at the other 2. Before to long there will be such a shortage of priests that there will have to be sharing of priests between parishes. Those are the things which should be being addressed. Those things are more important than trying to get back to the "proper" translation of the Word. I honestly feel that the hierarchy in Rome have lost touch with reality.
OK that's my rant for the day ! ! lol.
Take care all
Frank

Hi Frank! Sorry to hear about your rugby team, but if misery loves company, the Phillies lost too! And they were heavy favorites. I can't even think about it.

Gina, you're right. The Gloria is the one we're finding the most difficult. The others aren't too bad...maybe because they're shorter and easier for our brains to absorb!
Frank, I think the Canadian church hierarchy is very much the same as Ireland. I don't think any of our bishops would ever go against the Vatican. My husband was raised in the United Church of Canada and when I talk to his Mum about church, it's very interesting. In their church, each church makes a lot of decisions about what happens each Sunday, they even get to hire their own minister! She can't relate at all to the hierarchical nature of the Catholic church. When I tell her that decisions are made in Rome or by the Bishop and we have no say, she just shakes her head. I had heard about the "and with your spirit". Very interesting.
I couldn't agree more with your comments about church attendance and Rome putting the emphasis on the wrong things. It's the same over here. I remember the days when churches had two or three priests...now we're lucky to have one. In Canada, some churches in smaller communities share priests and we have seen some churches close and amalgamate into larger parishes. We have 3 Sunday Masses and there are plenty of spare seats at all. My girls to go Catholic school and only about 25% of the kids at school attend church regularly. My 11-year old is starting to notice and comment on these things. She's been working on recruiting some of her classmates who don't attend church into the parish youth group. She hasn't had any luck but she's persistent so it may happen yet. Bless her heart!
The overall decline in church attendance and society's general move away from faith is really sad. I have found since my cancer diagnosis that I have received tremendous support from my parish community, not to mention the strength my faith has given me.
Anyway, I'll get off my soapbox now. It's time for me to go to my fitness class!
Kay, I think this is day 8 of the Novena.
Peace be with all of you...and also your spirits, of course!

Dear bc sisters and bro,
Sandy, I am praying for Camille. Feeling stressed at work today, and I copied this prayer by our dear poet Sheila, and I read it about every five minutes. Thanks SAS!
Here is what Sheila wrote a few pages back:
Praying that Jesus wraps you in His love so you can breathe, that you feel HIs hug and know that you are never alone. That you see the morning sun and know there is more to this life, and that the beauty in your soul grows like a vine and protects you from all harm and negativity.

dear friends
I hope you are all well! We also have begun adopting the new Missal at our church. We have a power point each week explaining the changes and breaking it down bit by bit. At first I was very upset about the changes and especially because I feel it is a real fall back to the Conservative Vatican 1 days. I have young children and they go to a Catholic School and I am worried about our youth falling away from the church. As it becomes more and more conservative and we are now even getting rid of our more contemporary music mass as our priest states that the new guidelines have pulled so much of the music and there is an "approved list"for mass. I feel that my kids will be less and less engaged.
I see some people shaking their heads in mass like we are missing the point and I agree in some respects. The only part that is appealing to me is honoring age old traditions and putting some of that beauty back in the mass. It seems that there is a very all or nothing atttitude however...

Just want to say how happy I am to have found this thread. You are all such an inspiration. Sas, prayers that the bean is just that. Your faith is a joy to hear about. Frank, prayers that herceptin will work its magic. Michelle, my friend had the same reaction to taxol. Prayers for you that they will tweak it as necessary. Kay, mmm, Gina, lovemyfamily, always prayers for health in mind and body. Racy again thanks for attending to our intentions in Australia. May we all feel the warmth of Gods love this evening. Mary

Who would "approve" the music? Matt Maher is a good Catholic and is on Klove, hope that's approved.....We are so lucky that the priest we have is young and knows how to fill the pews....he is in rebuilding years as two years ago we had two Spanish priests that were pre Vatican 2 - one change they started immediately - no women on the alter - it was a man's world. When the collection basket was empty and the church echoed from being empty, they were moved in less than a year.

Wednesday was the last day of the novena. I will post again later.

I can't imagine having to pick songs from an "approved list". Our priest is also young. He is pretty good and lets the choir leaders pick the music without restrictions. Other than the new Mass settings that have been mandated to all parishes in our diocese by the bishop, we can choose whatever music is appropriate to the season and the readings for that day. We have a youth choir who sing beautiful contemporary music from the Spirit & Song books...can't imagine them singing "How Great Thou Art", "Come Holy Spirit, Creator Blest", "Now Thank We All Our God" or any of the other mouldy oldies that we sang when we were kids!
No women on the altar - Oh My! At our church we'd have very few altar servers, lectors, commentators, psalm cantors, etc. It's pretty much all women doing the work every week!

Yes music from the 1500's can be beautiful, but in that day it was "contempary" music. lol.
0 -
I like a mix of the old and new hymns...there is beauty in both to me.
0 -
Barb, I agree...I like the oldies too and it's great when our choir (made up of people in their 40's and 50's) sings them along with more contemporary music. That said, I can't see a choir of 8-14 year olds singing them and I think all the kids would quit if they had to sing hymns from an "approved list" that didn't include contemporary music.

Dear Jesus,
Divine Physician and Healer of the Sick,
we turn to You in this time of illness.
O dearest Comforter of the Troubled,
alleviates our worry and sorrow with your gentle love,
... and grants us the grace and strength to accept this burden.
Dear God,
we place our worries in your hands.
We ask that you restore your servants to health again.
Above all,
grant us the grace to acknowledge your holy will
and know that whatsoever you do,
you do for the love of us.
Amen0 -

Ladies each of you is as special to me as the women I met on retreat last week.....I really feel your power of prayers. I went in today thinking of Isaiah 43:1-3
"But now, thus says the LORD,who created you, Jacob, and formed you, Israel:
Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name: you are mine.
When you pass through waters, I will be with you; through rivers, you shall not be swept away. When you walk through fire, you shall not be burned, nor will flames consume you. For I, the LORD, am your God..."Praise God! My US and Mammo were clear.
