You want cutting edge cancer research, go to your nearest crime lab.  Oh, and buy some Amway while you're at it.

    Eli, cool article.

Question for all you cancer ladies. Friend of mine had a lump. They did a biopsy and the lump was found to be benign. However, she is scheduled to have a lumpectomy anyway next week, because the docs think it may turn into cancer. I only have this through my dh who got it from hers. I have not had a chance to talk to her yet. But it sounds odd. Anyone else have a benign lump cut out?

Momine,  I can't offer a definite opinion with the limited info. that you have.  I have had benign lumps out, but that was back in the day before the usual assaulting with a leather punch (I mean the core needle biopsy) so the excision of the lump WAS the biopsy.  Right now, I have a tiny fibroadenoma lump that never got biopsied, but it is noted and looked at each time I get scanned, and I feel o.k. with that staying in place.  While a fibroadenoma (a very common lump) does not turn to cancer, I imagine there are some other lumps that could, especially in a never say never kind of way.  A cyst does not turn to cancer either.  Some say if you leave a cyst or f-adenoma in place it could "hide" a small cancer, obscure it on future imaging.  So there is that.  I think if your friend has had the biopsy and it is B9, but they still want to take it out, it may be another kind of lump than the ones I have mentioned, something with atypical cells that could further mutate.  That might be something to ask...what the lump actually consisted of.

I can tell you this, even tho' the procedure of excision makes you go thru' the whole surgery ordeal, I had less pain and bruising than I had with the needle biopsy.

Or Momine if the lump is very large since a biopsy gets only such a tiny piece. They may want to test it all.

Eli - leather punch is right. I've used 16 gauge needles to put microchips in my goats. I think biopsy needles are even bigger.

Thanks guys. I tried to call her today, but couldn't get her. Good to know the above info before I talk to her.

The needle biopsies sound horrific. So glad I escaped that particular ordeal (had a surgical one, because my doc figured I would not enjoy the needle).

Momine - unlike Eli mine wasn't so bad. I was the one asking doc about needle size. My biopsy was a surprise. I was just going in for more views on mammo and doc. says very suspicious. Do you want to do biopsy today? So I had about an hour to get scared but all the time on phone arranging my work day to get it done. Went on for full day driving all around town. Story sounds worse when I repeat it. The radiologist is a doll; love her and very grateful for her diligence.

Good luck to your friend. Hoping for continued benign results.

I told my boss that Saturday is my last day. It felt so good I want to do it again tomorrow !!!!

Momine- is Bazedoxifene available where your are? MO said it is not available in the US.

    Momine Member Posts: 2,845

Diana, I am not sure. As far as I can see, it is available in Spain and Italy, but approved across the EU. I am not quite at the point yet, where I would start something like that, so I have not investigated if I could get the drug here. If we decided to put me on it, I could probably finagle a supply from Italy somehow.

Oh, and I spoke to my friend. This being Greece, I can't seem to get out of her exactly what they found to warrant the LX. She said they fear the lump will turn cancerous. That sounds to me like DCIS, but who knows. They may not have told her.

I did a quick search yesterday for Bazedoxifene. Seems it is in the FDA pipeline. This link is dated Dec. 2012.

Dianarose - you mean Saturday as in day after tomorrow? Wow, things are moving fast. Hope you are able to get all that list done b4 opening day or at least a reasonable amount. Yum. We only have donut shops here - 3 for my little town. They have the usual bear claws, sausage rolls, etc.,  but no true bakery. I would weigh 300# if I lived near you but lovely 300#.

DH off to work early so I must go finish feeding goaties.

Two things I like about today:  The Statue of Liberty got to reopen finally after the deluge of hurricane Sandy.

Also, the Coney Island Hot Dog Eating Contest which, if you are lucky, is televised in all its glory.  Makes me want a Nathan's.

Spoiler:  Joey Chestnut ate 69 of 'em to take home his 7th consecutive win.  What commitment!

I have trouble watching anyone jamming so many hotdogs into their mouth at one time. Makes me a wee bit queasy.

Now, I am ok with a pie eating contest. I guess the difference being my preference for fruit instead of meat?

Ah, but the true spectacle relies on the disgustingness.  The two most acceptable responses are AWE and HORROR.

Luvmygoats- Yes, tomorrow is my last day at the job. No more driving an hour and fifteen minutes one way. My shop is only 20 minutes one way.

Barsco- you gave me an idea. When I do the grand opening I should do a pie eating contests. That would be crazy fun. I am with you on watching that guy eat all those hot dogs. He looks like he is not feeling so well.

Marlegal- I am not planning on slowing down until this body forces me to do so. I am sure there will be plenty of time to take it easy even if it is not welcomed.

Does anyone know how big the dam cancer has to be to be seen on a CT scan or bone scan? Even the cancer in my ovary was microscopic so I am not sure if it would have shown up.

Dianarose - So happy for you that you have an end date to your current job. And even HAPPIER for you that things are moving along well with your new endeavour! A pie eating contest would be such a fun opening day event and would promote just how tasty your wares are.

I don't know how many of you out there have UHC for insurance.  They have some kind of program where someone calls once a month to chat with you.  Might be to check on the patients mental health, I don't know.  They don't ask me much, but usually say "How are you doing?" and then just pause for you to go on about whatever you want to.  We all know venting is good, but the person who calls me is not even a nurse and I don't think she even knows everything my disease entails.  Half the time, I have to explain what I am talking about.  I participated in the program just to see what it was, but it is kind of dorky and I can't help wondering how much money it takes to run the program and whether it could be better spent.

On the other hand, I'm lucky to have this community to "talk" with, vent, bounce ideas off of, get all the info. and support that I need; so maybe this UHC is a lifesaver for some people in remote locations, not computerized.  Maybe it is the only person who tries to understand them.  It seems easy for me to diss the whole program, but maybe it is the only way for some to connect and talk about the experience.  Anyone else ever have this aspect of care from UHC?  What did you think?

Congratulations Dianarose!.....I like the pie eating contest idea.....but what a waste of a yummy pie!

Eli- love the fireworks topper....happy 4th to everyone. I don't have UHC, but I have Kaiser that have a program that sounds similar, "Breast Buddies", or something as silly as that. I didn't sign up, although I considered it right after the diagnosis. I've looked for support groups, but have chickened out each time.....I like the support I get right here, with the ability to coast for a while and come back to it when I'm up to it, or need some info

I have UHC but no one ever calls me. They just bill me.........

Eli- I think I would be anoid if my insurance company called me. I have a breast cancer nurse who calls, sends cards, gift cards, etc.... I can vent to her anytime I want. She is great.

I was doing some touch up painting at the shop just for a minute to see how the paint was going to match up. The whole dam gallon fell on the floor and the paint not only went on my favorite dress, but up ther dress, all over my flip flops, both feet, and all on the tile floor that was just washed. It was so terrible that 2 of my sons were laughing their heads off. I am still not seeing the humor. That will take some time. Skin so soft bubble bath took it off like magic. Wonder what the hell is in that stuff.

One of my sons said the dress took one for the team. He got the look only a mother can give.

Oh Dianarose - what a mishap! I do think that I may have had a wee chuckle if I had witnessed said event. I am sure it only fuelled your frustration as the boys laughed, but that is what boys do best. Gotta love em for it. Sorry about your dress. Hope your son recovered from "the glare"

Jeannie - love your picture - your face radiates happiness!

I don't have UHC...the only calls I ever got were because of the two clinical trials I did. One follow up call from each once a year. The one was through Duke Univ andI had the same woman call each year. When it was the last yr, fifth year, we had a longer chat once she pointed out it was our last call. Wow...hadn't thought about that for a while!

Diana, I confess to a giggle as i read that, even though I'm really sorry about the dress.

And my hospital offered all kinds of support groups but I had found bco on first night after dx, went into the chat rooms and never felt the need for any other support. Yrs later I started with the Boards. Best support ever, andI know how lucky I am for that outlet.

Thanks for that my friends :)

Just popping in to say Hello!

I have been busy, haven't we all? Dianarose, I would love to be able to frequent your pastry shop, oh my, I would gain #'s just looking at everything. You'd have drip marks all over the cases of goodies due to my drooling! :)

I will certainly remember this fourth of July ~ I had to buy a new refrigerator! Crap! Just two months ago to the day (the 4th) I had to buy a new washing machine, el crappo!!

My DD asked me "do appliance deaths come in threes?!?" I told her NOT FUNNY!! And the fridge I replaced with my 'dead' one crapped out on Memorial Day. What is it with me, holidays, & appliances?? Hey, I got 14 years out of that side-by-side Whirlpool, not bad, huh? So bought another one. Stick with what works!

So, due to the delivery tomorrow of this expensive piece of machinery, my trip north is delayed by one day. I am headed to Lake Superior for fun in the sun with the Grandchildren for a week. Yay! Celebrating the grandson's 5th birthday, should be tons of fun. (Love 'em to death but I will miss my bed & my A.C.)

    Hugs to all!
