IDK, Lilac. These days I’m softening so much- trying to shed the grit of my North Jersey upbringing. I’m not sure I admire someone who flips the bird at death as her piece in The Guardian suggests. “For life is not a paragraph” ee cummings wrote. “And death I think is no parenthesis.”
Wonderland glad you got another year of all clear.
Had my MO six monther today. Nothing new to report. Tamoxifen it is. Exercise tomorrow

Happy 2020!!
Super jet lagged tonight!! We got home at 11:30 Sunday night - didn't get to bed till 12:30am and up for work yesterday at 6:30 as I didn't have to be anywhere till 8 - but no time for a morning walk. Today up at 5:15 - normal time!! We had a good trip...always love spending time with daughter (well all my kids). DH and I went to Eilat for 2 nights and went snorkeling for the first time - I've never been so cold in my life after I took off the wet suit- I was shivering beyond shivering. Even after time in the sauna I was cold again. Saw beautiful coral reefs and fish!! But snorkeling is hard!!! We also did a couple hikes. Went ATVing with DD and DH. We ate out every night - lots of great food - fancy burgers!! NYE is really only another night - DH and I were in Eilat and we ate at a fish restaurant on the sea - sat outside - great whole fish - Bream and sea bass. I will post some pictures when I'm not so tired.

Happy 2020s!
Awesome trip, Karen. Great photo, edj. I am a Manila girl and will probably need to go home a few times this year and next to continue with the neverending task of settling family affairs. I don't know how you can keep US time. I just immediately crash after the long flight and wake up more or less locally synced.
I'm on Day 4 of a 30-day beginner plank workout challenge. At the end I think there's a 2 minute regular plank. I'll be happy with one-minute. It should help with my general goal of strengthening my upper body as I seem to get enough lower body workouts.

It's definitely odd keeping US time. I wish we weren't, to be honest. There's so much I'd like to go see and do only nothing's open when we finish our work day.
One other issue I have here is my Garmin just can't track reliably. I've done two runs here, and Garmin thinks I'm running through buildings and smashing speed records. Neither are accurate. So instead of looking at distance and pace today, I ran for 35 minutes. Garmin thought I did 4 1/2 miles and again ran through buildings. I'm pretty sure I did 3 1/2 miles. The air quality here is hard on my lungs (I've got reactive airway disease which gets treated similarly to asthma) so I'm not pushing it at all.

edj - Isn't Manilla 12 or 13 hours ahead of central time? Two weeks is a long time to do that! Can I ask what you do? Where else do you get to travel? Israel is 9 hours ahead of Mountain time and I have to get on Israel time. But when I'm Eastern time, I try to stay on Mountain time as 2 hours isn't too different. Beautiful view from your hotel.
Sure wish it would get lighter a bit earlier - its still kind of dark at 6:30 - and when I leave at 7:00 I don't get a walk - well, I don't cound 10 or 15 minutes much. By 6:45 it is lightening up. Well, speaking of work, I best finish getting dressed!
Wonder - great news!
Have a great day!

that's a rough go keeping US time, heat, humidity, AND poor air quality.
But you do it all anyway -- way to get the run in.
My pirformis issue is not gone but better and I'm doing a lot of proactive work to not have to deal with this forever.
Ran today with an 18 minute quality piece -- without T since Saturday -- and my heartrate was where it should be and it wasn't such a struggle.
Total 6.25
Off to plastics this morning and then work!

Manila is 14 hours ahead of CST right now. I work for H&R Block and we have four call centers here for one line of business (we also have something like 10 call centers in the US). One of the four sites here is with a new to us vendor. Since I manage all call center training development and delivery, I'm here to help with the training launch.
Our call centers here keep our hours because that's when our clients call us. Apparently this is a common thing because I've never seen so many restaurants open until 3 or 4 AM.
Yes, it's hard and three weeks is a long time but I do love seeing the world. I've been fortunate enough to do business in China and Mexico (for a different company) and India for Block. I've been a road warrior (ie 100%) before and I love it and miss it when I can't travel.
But I'm so, so, so glad I picked the marathon in June instead of the one in April. Yes, I'm running here but there's no way to train, not really.
And I have to say this city is beautiful and the people are fantastic. Love it!

Yesterday I ran a couple miles in the morning in the neighborhood, a walk at lunch, and ran another couple miles on the treadmill at the gym after work.
Today I lifted weights for a very short time this morning. Hope to get a couple long walks later today.

Here's the Wednesday Walking Women. The younger lady in the middle is the director of the activity center where we take classes and walk in the winter. It's her birthday, so we stopped by her office to wish her well. (Some people are making 'horns' with their fingers and wearing yellow because the North Dakota State University Bison football team is playing for the National Championship on Saturday.)

Jumping on here! I've been MIA again. It's my MO (method of operation) I was able to make it to yoga Monday !!! Yesterday my girl had terrible reflux all night long. (Trust me it wasnt what I fed her she was visiting with family) I got to sleep 1 hour and 8 minutes monday night so Tuesday I was dragging! I did manage to get a little yoga and a small walk in. Today I delivered Meals on Wheels plus snow boxes. The snow boxes have 5 days worth if nonperishable food items. They are to be used on days that we can not deliver due to snow and ice. I could only carry 4 snow boxes at a time. I made 3 trips in and out of the building across the parking lot to my Suburban and back to the building. I got 5 miles in going f back and forth. I'm still tired from the lost sleep on Monday night so that might be it for tonight. Unless I hit the treadmill later.
OHHHHHH!! I did listen to a good podcast on nutrition and cancer Monday night. Bottom line....exercise is more important that!!! You girls have it right!!!

After walking & eating this morning, I went and had my second shingles shot, followed by a two hour hair appointment. I had been somewhat dreading the shot because after the first I didn't feel at all good and my arm REALLY hurt. So imagine my surprise when evening came and I felt fine (with the arm being just a tiny bit sore). I ended up going to a PiYo class. Yea!!

Ruth glad the shot was uneventful so far.
Varga all that heavy lifting was quite a workout!
This afternoon I accidentally did a 20 minute Leslie Sansone walking workout messing around on You Tube - meant to do 30 but its all good. I did it. 🎖 I love that Fitbit identified it as "aerobics".

So I brought one set of running clothes and one set of non-running workout clothes to Manila but I vastly underestimated how much I would sweat on my runs. I don't sweat copiously even in the heat of Kansas summers so that was a surprise.
I'd originally planned to hand wash my running clothes but learned I get a daily laundry allowance at my hotel. So when I did the sniff test on my running shirt yesterday and it most definitely did not pass, I sent it to laundry. But it didn't come back in time for a run this AM so I did an hour of weights and abs instead.
And then I went to Uniqlo and bought a running shirt so I I can keep running (and not stinking).

I did an easy 5 this morning -- feeling better and better each day since starting the PT work on my butt cheek and getting off the T

Ugh, my shingles shot side effects kicked in about the time I was going to bed; really cold, shaky etc. I spent a basically sleepless night (according to Fitbit I was out 2 1/2 hours). So, after getting up & doing a few things around here, I went back to bed for the rest of the morning. DH & I took the dogs for a little walk this afternoon & I am now going to attempt Dance2Fit. I'm feeling better, so a good night's sleep should get me back on track!

I have to say, after having my last chemo 2 weeks ago, I thought my energy level would return quickly. Not so true. I flew to my Florida home on Wednesday, walked the beach yesterday for quite a long time was completely exhausted. A good kind of tired, but can't wait for my usual energy level to return. When? How long does it take to feel back to normal again? Surgery is scheduled for Feb. 13th and I would like some energy back.

https://www.breastcancer.org/research-news/women-w-low-muscle-mass-have-worse-survival
This article talks about Low Muscle Mass in women have worse survival rates. My first thought about it was that it was about lifting weights, but the last part of the article just talks about increasing walking time. Weight lifting is never addressed in this article. Is aerobic exercise king for survival?
So I am wondering about your opinions about this article. Is weight lifting critical to survival? Is yoga valuable in increasing muscle mass? I do lift weights and will continue to. I don't do yoga, but I know it's popular here. Is yoga more for flexibility and stress relief or is it equally beneficial for increasing muscle mass?
That's a bit rambling and a bunch of questions! Any thoughts on this are appreciated

I think weights are important but NOT heavy weights ... however, my sister, a survivor (she stayed flat as some TMI) is a yoga beast. She's in her 70's and is strong as an ox with MUSCLES all from yoga and pilates.

wow! That is impressive! I really need to make yoga/Pilates a priority. That’s a powerful incentive. Thank you for this information, iwaveatcow

Martaj, I did surgery, then chemo, then radiation. So, since my sequence was different from yours, I can't answer specifically about when you will start feeling better, but I do know I actually felt my energy level returning during radiation. As far as feeling 'normal', I once read that however long you are in treatment, expect it take that long again......but, from my experience, I would say to double the amount of time. Not that you don't feel better and better the farther out you get, but it is going to take awhile.
As far as muscle mass goes, there are many different ways to work your muscles/increase their mass. I try to vary my exercise program so I hit different parts of my body (plus I get bored doing just one thing). Pilates is wonderful for those small muscle groups that don't get worked in the usual exercise routines, and yoga will give you long, lean muscles (as well as flexibility and balance).
I am happily recovered from my shingles shot. Aqua Zumba & Yoga Nidra for me today.

Interesting article. Walking is my favorite (and really only) form of exercise especially outside. My goal is 15K but if I get to 10-12 I'm content. If I don't make 10K, I'm disappointed - the other day I only got 8K. My oncologist has told me that walking is the best thing I can do for myself....so sometimes I joke that I have an Rx to walk!!
Short work week that felt long!!!
Have a great week-end

I feel that way with my running -- it is truly my Rx

Just catching up on this thread. The fact that losing muscle mass is a problem for so many breast cancer patients is not surprising to me, as it's the invariable result of too much inactivity. I kept most of mine as continued to do all my normal exercise throughout treatment, though intensity was dialed down. As soon as the drain came out, I went to my free weights, but 5s, not 10s at first. Once they felt like feathers, I went back to my 10s.
Cancer or not, sarcopenia (muscle wastage) is not something we want, or at least it's not something I want. I want to be able to ski, cycle, hike, run and swim as I get older. I like being able to lug all my groceries in one trip. I need to mention that flexibility is important here too. I will be using that, along with my muscles, to take down my live tree and haul it to the tree composting site on the property where I live.
I am behind on the tree dismantling as was buried with work this past week, plus still recovering from the shingles shot mishap. I have been fuzzy-brained, cranky, and low energy. Unusual for me. Got out for about 4 miles of walking in the chilly rain a bit earlier. Still have my lifting, though done with crunches. I do this every weekday, and I swear it's what keeps my brain in tip-top shape as well as the physical benefits.
On the plus side, watching what I eat plus giving up wine has meant that my weight is down about 5 pounds from a point that I hope I never get to again. I can already feel a significant difference in the way my velvet jeans fit (read "be able to get into them"). I have about another 15 to go and hoping to be half way there by the end of this month. I am heartened to confirm that all it will take is a bit of focus and discipline. The other tasks I have done recently were far more difficult.....or at least I think it's a lot more difficult to resurrect a career and bolster finances than lose a few pounds.
My goal for the New Decade is svelte, not pudgy!!
Because who wants a closet full of fabulous clothes that used to fit? - Claire

That's why I can't let myself gain weight, Claire. I have fun clothes & can't afford a whole new wardrobe! If you love to eat (I do!), another good reason to exercise is that muscle weighs more than fat, so you can weigh a little more but look thinner and better than if you are skinny and saggy. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it!)

Thank you all for the information on energy return and muscle mass. I lost a lot of muscle mass during chemo, and unable to exercise like I usually do. Now that I'm 2 weeks out of chemo, surgery scheduled for Feb 13th, I was actually able to do some weeding of my flower beds down here in Florida yesterday. Took a long nap after. This morning work up and feeling the muscles in my arms this am. So there is hope. I enjoyed reading the article of muscle mass so will work hard toward that. Started doing my post mastectomy exercises as well, might as well get used to it. As soon as sun comes up will walk beach with my hubby. Happy Saturday everyone

Way to get after it Claire -- and I love Seattle!

Martaj; whatever you do now will help you bounce back faster once this is all over. Since you have an athlete's mindset, you WILL get back to what is your 'normal' and beyond, if that is your desire. On an encouraging note, I hadn't liked lower body toning exercises very much so tended to skimp on them. While recovering from surgery/chemo/rads; when I had to very, very carefully & slowly regain my upper body strength, I started to really concentrate on the lower body (which I could work without restrictions). Imagine my great surprise and thrill when I lost a PANTS SIZE without even trying!!!
I have a super-busy day coming up so am headed downstairs for 45 minutes on the treadmill (the temperature outside is minus 17.....so outdoor exercise is not really an option.....jealous, jealous of your walk on the beach, Martaj!)
Happy Saturday, All!
