Hi bluetail....glad I could "out" you!

dulci....feeling better after all that fresh air? Sorry about the "snowbombs".....no way to avoid them today.

A few pics to share from today, so dulci doesn't have all the fun!

    Moose!  So beautiful.  Welcome Bluetail!

Short walk today.  Went to doctor about acid reflux symptoms.  As part of the workup they gave me a stool sample kit to take home.  I've suffered many medical indignities yet I've managed to avoid that one until now.  You'd think they would at least use an opaque container but no it's clear.

Pretty photos  and thanks Badger.  Ann do keep us posted and yes to opaque container.

Freestyle Step and body balance yesterday.

Today is a rest day with son being shuttled to a friend's birthday sleepover tonight as DH and I have a night out attending a Rotary dinner dance.  Rotary helps fund pink ribbon pilates  and we support them.

Ruth - reminds me of an old Bill Cosby standup routine where he explained that for years he and his brother totally thought their names were 'Jesus Christ!' and 'God Da**it!'.....lol

Wow, nahai, was that mountain in the bottom image of your latest post on Earth, our home planet?  It looks absolutely otherworldly!

About lurking:  I've lurked on this (and several other) forums because there's still a part of me that feels like the New Girl in the eighth grade, awkwardly carrying her tray through the school cafeteria hoping to find an open seat at a table, a friendly face and/or something that I could interpret as a welcome, and I must say that I was grateful for so many of your warm responses to what I thought was just a hit-and-run, two-line post.  It's silly, really, after all these years to still feel this way, but I'm sure that you, too, have felt like this at one time or another.

Since the point of this thread it to talk about exercise, let's talk about exercise!  I started jogging in 1967 when I was a sweet young thing of 19, and after an invigorating 500-yard (sic) 'jog' as we called it then, I would reward myself for all that effort with a cigarette and a Coca Cola back at the dorm.  Over the years I managed to a) quit smoking; b) quit drinking Coke; c) maintain some form of regular and routine aerobic activity.

But all of that joint pounding from running and tennis took its toll, and in 2011 I had a total hip replacement followed by a total knee replacement in 2012; as I was getting back on my feet (literally) in early 2013, it was time to take care of a few things I'd let slide:  the dentist, the eye doctor, the mammogram...

About 15 years ago or so I bought a pretty good bicycle at an end-of-season sale and absolutely fell in love all over again with the fun and freedom you get perched over two self-propelled wheels, and in a typical year--certainly not last year!--I'd log several thousand miles.  So it is with great optimism that I slog off to either the basement or the gym these days to 'ride the bike to nowhere' hoping to return to the open roads and to the Great Allegheny Passage (http://atatrail.org/) as soon as the weather around here breaks.

Thanks, ladies, for the invite to sit at your table.

Bluetail I love to bike too.  In the summer I trade off between walking and biking, giving my feet or tush a rest that way!  Can't wait to bike and garden.

This morning I walked to and from yoga which is 15 minutes and then yoga was an hour.

Biking is my favorite, too. I've been eyeing the closest trail to home. There is still way too much snow for my hybrid.

I also love antique cycling. Here's a picture someone took last summer during a parade. I'm quirky.

I wish more of my bike was showing. It's 117 years old. Best riding bike I've ever had.

It's early spring here (daffodils, forsythia, and cherries are starting to bloom), and warm rain is a-falling.  Got in a ride earlier while relatively dry.  Felt good to do the 25 miles, even if I got soaked at the end.

Having some tea as need to get back to those mounds of work that await me.  Just saw the funniest FB.  Someone added in a life event: she vacuumed!

I am hoping to get in one more ski before the season ends. - Claire

Bluetail,  I still feel like that eighth grade girl.....Welcome to the table

Ruth, so true. Bet my dogs don't even know their real names...lol

As for my exercise today, I ran almost four miles before enjoying a few minutes sitting outside in the sun.

    Claire,

I do! I am part of an antique cycling club that is dedicated to sharing and preserving the history of cycling n America. I love, love, LOVE all things related to antique cycling. The bike in my pic was a rusty heap when I got it. With help I learned how to clean them up and keep them as original as possible. (My red and black paint scheme cost somebody a whole dollar extra in 1899!) Then I found a bike for my daughter (1896) and that one I fixed up all by myself! I even built the wheels (spoked the rims, etc) for both bikes. One of my favorite books is The Social History of the Bicycle. Great read!!! I also collect stereoview cards that are women/cycling related. My favorite is a woman with a bicycle talking to her harried looking husband. The caption? "Sew on your own buttons. I'm going for a ride!"

    You go, girl!!! Lol.

Bicycles also helped us get better roads (before cars) through the Good Roads movement. And many traffic laws originated in cycling. And then many bicycle manufacturers turned into car manufacturers. My bike is a Rambler. Eventually that company grew into the American Motor Corporation...if anyone remembers the Nash Rambler cars.

WAY off thread topic!!!!! So...I'm still coughing my head off and feeling miserable, but not quite as wiped out. Hopefully that's a turn for the better! Just a bit of walking today. Happy Spring Forward everyone!!

About 30 minutes of chop & sculpt earlier today.  Just got back from a Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation fundraiser dinner.  With the change to daylight savings it's already after midnight and I'm about to turn into a pumpkin so I'm going to bed.......

Bluetail, I still get that new kid in the cafeteria feeling every time I try to join a social group.  I'm looking forward to hearing your cycling adventures, even the indoor variety.  Dulcigirl, I love the bike photo and hearing that you made bike wheels.  I didn't even know bike wheels could be made by hand.

Walked today and one measly set of upright rows.  Working on tax returns. I moved in 2013 and donated about half a house full of stuff to charity, have to assign value and total all that up.  Bleah!

Bluetail welcome, nice to get to know you and thanks for the Great Allegheny Passage link.   Reads as quite a ride and doable.  Dulcigirl, great photo and thank you for the bicycle history lesson and my grandmother had a Nash.

Stunning clear, sunny morning so got up early and ran nearly 6K.

Now to tackle some much needed spring cleaning clear out-like you did Ann.

Bluetail, not only can you sit at our table; you can join the cycling team, the track team (running, walking....does hopping fit here or with the dancers?), the dance teams (Zumba, Body Jam etc), the ski team, the debate team (should I exercise today or should I sit here eating jelly donuts? That is the question.

), and of course, we are all part of the cheerleading team (Yea, for us!).

Dulci, awesome picture and bike history facts. Very cool!!! I will have to look for that book.

Nihahi, great pictures too. I bet it will look even nicer without the snow!

I'm off to drag out another DVD. It is actually supposed to be pretty nice out today, but I don't know if I will be able to find a dry enough stretch to walk on because everything is going to be all slushy/melty/muddy. I guess you need to go through that part to get rid of the snow, so I better not complain too much. Have a great day, all!

It's supposed to be in the 40's today and nearly 50 tomorrow (!!) then back to snow & cold on Tues so better enjoy while I can.  Will go do a.m. yoga now and will walk my 2.5 mile route this afternoon.  Slushy/melty here too (not muddy yet) but it's all sidewalks and I'll wear my Sorels for a bonus leg workout.

Welcome Bluetail and I second what Ruth said

Dulci great photo. LB yes the steamer would work, eventually, I would be more inclined to use vinegar to get rid if the limescale or can you get CLR over there, that works like a charm and then use the steamer, I use mine mostly in the kitchen I put it down the drain and give it a shot if steam, spray the cupboard doors and wipe them over, countertops and the best is I always spray the fridge door handles. Mary yes DH is right it's glorious here at the moment, more like summer.

Went to Bootcamp yesterday, a new girl teaching the class and afterwards when I went to say thank you she shocked me by grabbing me and hugging me and said 'oh you did amazing', well tell that to my aching thighs from those wall squats!!!

Yesterday afternoon went with gym friends to Long Beach for lazy late lunch/early dinner ... This was sunset

Cheryl - beautiful picture - very dreamy looking.  Yes, believe me I've been getting reports about the great SoCal weather this weekend!  I think DH left on purpose this weekend so I'd be the one stuck changing all the clocks.

Bluetail - you had me chuckling recreating that 8th grade cafeteria feeling.  Amazing how decades later we're all still scarred by junior high! We're so glad you un-lurked - as Ruth said you're welcome to sit at any table and join any club - there are no mean girls here!  Dulci - neat about the antique bicycles and what a great picture.  I love what an interesting group we are.

Just back from a 5 mile run.  It's chilly (40) and windy, but who cares - it's SUNNY!  And the Nats Spring Training game is on TV in a few minutes so life is good.  By the way Ruth - I've been meaning to post a link for you to a nice story the Post did on Denard a couple weeks ago:

Beautiful picture. Cheryl.  Wish I was there!  Dulci love your bike.  Is it true those bikes had no brakes?  I remember reading in sociology class what a change bikes brought.

for exercise, I walked 35 minutes through the slushy, watery sidewalks and went to the grocery store.

This is not exercise but I also got my federal taxes 90% done, renewed my drivers license and license plate, and sorted through and paid medical bills. So all that was not fun but I'm glad I made good progress on those nasty chores.

    yep, TwoHobbies!

No brakes originally. Pedals were direct drive so that if you ride downhill you must put your feet up to get them out of the way because if the wheels are turning, the pedals are turning. Makes for some lovely bruises! You can slow them by trying to backpedal, but you need to plan ahead to stop. ;-)

For safety's sake because we ride in crowds ours have been fitted with early coaster brakes (like we probably all grew up on). The highwheels (aka pennyfarthing, "ordinary") also have no brakes. And the center of gravity makes them prone to tipping forward if they hit something. That's where the phrase "take a header" came from since the rider's knees are basically pinned beneath the handlebars and accidents could cause serious head injuries (broken arms, collarbones,...). I got to ride one of those once. SO MUCH FUN!!!! Our bikes are known as "safeties" because they evolved out of attempts to design safer bicycles.

I could go on, and on, and on.....as Claire mentioned the invention of the bicycle changed a lot of things for women, like clothing...as "Rational Dress" came into vogue (slowly!!!) due to the need for safer more comfortable clothing. Goodbye corsets! (That took a while. First there were shorter corsets for cycling.)

Many lectured against the bicycle as an evil. Some people started taking long rides on weekends and church attendance dropped. Courting couples were venturing away from the watchful eyes of chaperones. Women were "developing masculine features." (Muscles???) Some bicycle seats were actually designed out of fear that the pressure of riding on a typical seat might be "pleasurable/stimulating" to women.

My seat is one of those. It has two separate cushions. It's actually the most comfy seat I've ever had. Lol!!!  Doctors were divided as to whether cycling was safe or harmful to health.

Well, if you read this far...that was very kind of you to indulge me. I will stop babbling and return to coughing. DH mentioned something about bronchitis. Hmmmm. Don't think I've had that for 20 years! Today's exercise was napping and typing. Keep moving, ladies!!!!! GO, TEAM!!!!!

twohobbies.....sounds like an "exercise in perseverance" to me!

    dulcigirl....love the bike stuff!

5km run/walk today....OUTSIDE AGAIN!!!! Intervals....run(bare, dry pathway), walk(wet, slushy, puddles)....Running outside is soooooo different than on the dreadmill. Different angles, different muscles, different mindset....love it. Then did some errands and some yoga to stretch out. Gotta love the "big melt" we are having. Last Sunday we had windchills in the -40's, today it's +10!

It was so nice that a couple of us couldn't stand it; we drove out into the country and walked for an hour on dry gravel roads. Since I was with two of my fastest friends, it really was a good workout. Fun to breathe fresh air!!!

A number of years ago now, my town had a centennial. As part of the celebration, a book telling the town's history was published.  The photo below is from Chapter 8 "....and we made our own fun". A great picture taken in the early 1900s; according to the caption, this group of ladies, and other like it, often rode their bikes the 15 miles out to a popular nearby lake for a little fun in the sun.

Yesterday taken by return trip to eye doctor then 3 hour hair appointment which is also over an hour drive one way so no exercise.  I also have bad habit of eating badly in car on long drives so that didn't help.

Today was nice out so walked a mile to the gym, did upper and lower body weights then walked back home.  So that was a nice 2 hours but my legs are not happy.

No, still did not do taxes.  Oh well, have few more weeks.  Exercise is much more important!
