Nisa, I have a pedometer that tracks steps and miles walked. I keep track here by clicking into "My Profile" then "My Settings" and editing my signature line.
Used to be my old mileage would stay static so I could see increases from post to post but now all posts are updated when I edit and save the new distance, even past ones. Kind of a bummer because it's motivating to SEE progress but they must have changed that feature in the upgrade to keep from having to cache all that history.

I would LOVE to see that old apple tree in bloom!!!!
The little black things are a type of fungi.....their name is "Hairy Black Cups"....quite interesting little things, and just happened to spot them. The pink flowers are called "Shooting Stars".

I am beat after a super busy day. Started with me trying to figure out my Sprint Connect that went beserk yesterday. Phone was ringing when I got home. I think I fried the batteries. I am wondering about my poor neighbors, and how many hours was this going on? At least I can get into voice mail and return calls on my mobile. Plus, I am having trouble resetting my eBay password. That will keep me from shopping...They send me a new one, but it gets trapped in my msn spam filter. Microsoft wants me to upgrade....no.
I got reacquainted with my vacuum cleaner, then off to a 5k run, followed by a shower. Then 3.5 hours at the office prior to heading into Seattle for a facial and trip to the resale shop where I got three cute summer tops for CHEAP. I need these as I have what I would refer to as "unrelated separates". These pieces will help.
Finally, off to the wine bar to catch up and try the two new guest wines. Bought one to have with dinner. Also tasted a yummy cider, and had a glass of sparkling Gewurtztramminer. YUM!!! Then busing it back to Redmond and up the hill. Everyone was jealous that I am having halibut fish cakes for dinner.
Wonderful photos Nihahi....would love to be there.
BTW....one of the challenges of buying summer clothing in Seattle is so few really hot days. Long sleeved cotton tops aren't that easy to find. At least, not ones that are office-worthy. I got a white linen cardigan which is just fab. Plus, a pink Lacoste T for $12. I think I can layer, and look amazing.
Off to dinner and an early evening. More work in the AM, and I have to do a ride before doing a couple of hours in the office. Halibut cakes await..... - Claire

hi...I joined this board as an inspiration for when I finish chemo...next week is my last...woohoo...then radiation...lol at counting brushing teeth ...but seriously, at this stage of the game, I would count that as exercise!
I know a few people with the fitbit pedometer (?)...it may be just a more expensive pedometer but does the same thing as the cheap ones I used to get...anybody have that? I will keep checking in on here and maybe soon I will post my activities besides walking from kitchen to couch or walking around my porch! ( but it's a big wraparound porch!)...lol...Rosie

I have a fitbit, my DS gave it to me for my birthday. My goal is set at 10,000 steps, but I don't usually hit that on days that I don't make a concerted effort. I really love it and am looking forward to the Tori Burch designer bands that are coming out this summer.

hi Rosie, welcome! Starting slow is great 'cuz it means you started! I started with a walk to the mailbox and over four+ years have logged 4,400+ miles walked. Do what you can then post it here. Our collective Voices will encourage you.
Kept killing the $5 pedometers I bought at the big box store so upgraded to a $30 pedometer from the local sports shop. It'll sync to a smart phone but I don't care since I don't have a smart phone LOL. So far, it's done a yeoman's job!
Yesterday afternoon, a mama wood duck came into my back yard, with her brood of adorable fuzzy little ducklings. They took shelter under this sprawling flowering shrub in the middle of the yard (which DH hates to mow around and wants to cut down, but I've said no because it's good habitat and see I'm right!). They were still there when I got done painting but gone this morning.
Beautiful morning presages a great day. Hope same for all! ♥
p.s. hey Jane, good to see ya here!

Welcome, Rosie! , moving around definitely 'counts' If I have time today, I will give a report on a small book I just read by a NASA scientist entitled Sitting Kills, Moving Heals~How Simple Everyday Movement Will Prevent Pain, Illness, and Early Death-and Exercise Alone Won't.
Even though I didn't feel like it (and whined the whole time) I just got done with a 30 minute FIRM DVD Rock Solid Abs. Yikes, yesterday I had coffee (and pie) at the nursing home with my old lady friends, went to a 70th birthday open house (cake), and to a graduation party in the evening (lots of yummy food & more cake. This afternoon, we are invited to 5 more graduation open houses!!!!! Cake Overload Ahead!!!!

LOL Ruth, maybe they'll have cake pops. Very popular here.

First bake a cake. Take a scoop of cake and form a ball on the end of a new lollipop stick. Dunk in melted chocolate (or frosting, or ganache) and roll in sprinkles or whatever, then let cool. Nice because you only get a bite or two but it's satisfying and fun.

Loving all the pics!
Went on a 40 km bike ride with hills. No pics though.

Rosie - Sending gentle hugs as you finish chemo. Last summer I walked slowly in circles in my backyard during chemo, with my sweet Golden Retriever following me.
BTW, you migth wish to visit Stage 2 Susters thread where there are women in same boat. Keep yourself hydrated!
Everyone - Any suggestions for a pedometer? Never owned one and too many to chose from.
Hugs, Nisa

I use a different system. I set myself a goal walk/cycle/hike/ski/swim where I have a pretty good idea of what I want to do. Anything I do above and beyond that over the course of the day is a bonus. I do have a speedometer/odometer on my bicycle which really helps.
For example, I am planning on 25 miles of cycling. Not sure how much else I will be doing, and frankly, I don't care. This is what I need to keep on track with my training. I have a 5k route mapped out for running. Simple to stay on track, and no gadgets to worry about. (I have about 3 other things to fix at the moment.)
Have been working all morning and need to slide into my cycling clothes to get my ride in prior to more work at the office. Hair color later today. - Claire

In the book Sitting Kills, Moving Heals, Joan Vernikos, PhD makes the scientific case as to why our sedentary modern life style is basically leading to many diseases and death. I am not going to go into the research & all that. But she says, that along with what we consider to be 'exercise', everyone needs to put more MOVEMENT into their everyday life. An interesting point she made was that the key to independence in old age was being able to stand up and sit down without help! So stand up often throughout your work day. She advises to keep your phone someplace where you have to GET UP to answer it, drink lots of water so you have to GET UP to go to the bathroom (even during the night, because it isn't good to lie still that long.....which makes me feel a lot better about my getting up 3 times a night to go!). Stretch often during the day, use the stairs, stand up tall, use a manual can opener, eat foods that require using a knife & fork, sweep, shop in stores instead of on the Internet, dance, learn a language, do the crossword puzzle......
So, on her 'Fitness Pyramid', the base has the daily habits such as those above plus yoga & tai chi. The next level of the pyramid includes walking, hiking, biking, resistance exercises & pilates, the third level is equipment-facilitated & floor exercise, and at the top is athletic training. But she makes the point that the base is the foundation you build the rest on.
I will skip the part about fueling the body (since eating cake is not one of her recommendations) other than to say she recommends eating something soon after strenuous exercise, like within 30 minutes....not longer than 2 hours afterwards. Yogurt is good because it gives you amino acids & protein also is important.
Okay, there is my book report!

Hi Rosie and welcome, I too have a Fitbit that I love but my problem is that I keep losing it, case in point. A couple of days ago I couldn't find it anywhere and of course those were days where I was really active, anyways I was baffled as really there are only a couple of places it could have been, I even carefully ran my hands around everything I put in the washing machine (my goddaughter washed hers) I have this pop on dress that I clean house in as it's decent enough that if I go outside and run into someone it doesn't look like I'm cleaning in my Pyjamas, so yesterday I had it on and looked down and there clipped to the neck was my Fitbit whew I thought I was going crazy
Good book report, and glad you glossed over the food part and now I'm also going to have to count my nighttime bathroom excursions as exercise
Did Body Step class this morning but heading to a party this afternoon so I know there will lots of naughty things to eat that will negate the sweat equity!!!

Onco - sounds like 'fun'. I love singing in the choir but 3 hours is an awfully long time! I'd be fidgeting pretty badly because of sore feet problems. Don't worry, standing all the time counts too......

Today was just a dog walking day.
Thanks for the book report, Ruth. My job is so awfully sedentary that it worries me. I had my doctor write me a note stating that I have a medical need to get up and move around 5-10 minutes every hour, or I wouldn't be able to get away with it.

Ruth.....I'm very interested in reading that book....if I can't find it in our library (small town, so not likely) may I ask where you got it from? Thanks.
yoga this morning, driving range later on. Then, laundry, vacuuming, taking out the trash, ironing hubby's work shirts, etc.

It was reviewed in the Parade Magazine (that comes with the Sunday paper here) and sounded interesting so I ordered it on amazon.com

Thanks Ruth. I've seen similar articles in fitness journals, etc, but would like to read about this in more depth. There is a popular theory nowadays, that "excess sitting" is one of the biggest health issues now. Apparently studies show it has the same impact on our health, as smoking used to.

I think you will find it interesting
I am reclining right now....like a big boa constrictor....trying to digest 5 pieces of cake & other assorted party foods....

Found it at our library, and now have it on hold! Thanks Ruth.

I went to a party yesterday and the hostess was wearing this t shirt and I thought it pertained to Ruth's post, and I was talking to one if the young girls who is a physical therapist and she reiterated that being active as we age is so important.

Ran four miles in the rain this morning - it felt wonderful. I'm trying Jeff Galloway's Run/Walk/Run method now, and since he considers it running I will too. I also did weighted leg lifts for my quads, since another thing I learned from Jeff Galloway is that I shouldn't do my lower body strength training on rest days from running, because then I'm not really resting my leg muscles.
(Edited to add) ...what the heck, since I'm off today, I went on to the gym did my full body weight work out too.

badger.....amazing photo!!!! Good timing too, as I am just popping in to wish all you Yanks a wonderful Memorial Day, filled with fun and family, and heartfelt respect for the members of the military whose sacrifice "created" this day. My dad was a WWII vet....and my small hometown always had very moving ceremonies on Memorial Day. I grew up with the family tradition of planting flowers on the family graves for Memorial Day, and Dad always made sure we spent some quiet time at the Soldier's Circle in the cemetery. He made sure we understood at an early age, what it's significance was to our lives.
oncowarrior....good lord no! The only "shooting" I do is with a camera. A driving range is where you practice hitting golf balls
."nihahi" is a First Nations word that means "rocky" or "a rocky place".....it is a mountain near here that has special "connections" to me for a variety or reasons, but I am not a Native American.

Badger, that is a great one from Teka - thanks for sharing! Ruth, Sitting Kills, Moving Heals would be a great read for my mil yet she would most likely not read it nor do what is suggested if she did read it. At 77 she adapts to the effects of inactivity and change is not something to be considered~sigh. Like the tee shirt Cheryl.
Welcome Rosie.Body balance at gym this afternoon and no step tonight as that gym is closed for this bank holiday Monday.

I think I got all my exercise in for the whole week in the last two days. Literally 4 hours of digging and planting yesterday and 3 hours of planing today. I do love to garden but I can barely walk right now. I have taken two aspirin and am headed for a bath I think! Edited to add I also walked my dog today. No wonder I'm tired!
Ruth there has been a couple of studies lately talking about sitting and how damaging it is. I try to do things to get up from my desk like go talk to people, get coffee, go to a printer, do the stairs etc. I worry its not enough though. Overall I think we need to be more holistic about health as we learn how bad sitting is, and how bad lack of sleep is. While its good to concentrate on diet and exercise too, there's other pieces.
I hope everyone had a great memorial day weekend. What a beautiful flag sunset photo. Oh and cake pops - I saw cheesecake pops made on the Food Network. I've been wanting to try those but afraid how much I'll like them! .

Badger, amazing photo! Thanks for sharing.
Spent the weekend doing chores but managed a long walk each day. Like Twohobbies, I am a firm believer that activity and sleep are as critical as diet.
Hope everyone enjoyed a safe and happy Memorial Day. May we honor our fallen heros.
