Hi, guys!
Still recovering from this nasty flu and kidney/UTI infection. Can you guys remind me not to be paranoid, because now I'm thinking "what if it's not a UTI/kidney infection...what if it's kidney cancer! Or what if I dont have the flu but am getting a mets! I have had a small annoying back pain for a few weeks in my upper mid back (like it needs to crack like a knuckle or something)"
Am I being ridiculous or what! I'm sorry, I sound so stupid! But after having a melanoma in 2005 and now this...I'm so afraid that I'll get another cancer!!!!
Can you guys clear me up here...boo hoo. I'm so sorry for being a whiner!!!!

Hi cake... You are not alone on this and I know so many others can relate to it. I wasnt feeling good on Sunday, yesterday I was better. This afternoon aches and pains are back, of course like you are doing right away the mind goes to other things. I guess were normal.
Thats not whining its a real fear. Maybe you need to eat something unhealthy that makes you feel better. Are you on hormon pills? I heard that can also can give you pain.

Cakeisgreat,
hmmm... we have somethng in common... I HAD MELANOMA prior to this diagnosis... however that was a decade ago, yes at the ripe age of 27! So, we are entitles to be a bit neurotic about our health. I know where your mind can take you... but remember you are aving symptoms which have been diagnosed, correct? This should be reassuring.
As far as all this media attn about no self exam, etc... NONSENSE, I am still in my 30's, this would have been life altering if I did not get diagnosed when I did! The other thing they do not mention, the younger you are at diagnosis generally the more aggressive the cancer! I was a grade 3... YIKES!

I too had a melanoma in oct. of 08 and then bc in dec. So I know exactly how you feel. Its very hard not to go there in your head with every little ache and pain. Just had a CT scan that has just about sent me over the edge. No results until fri.

Hello all of you wonderful ladies,
I have been off the site for a few days, and can't even try to catch up. I missed you all, and thank you for your warm wishes. I have a bit of chemo crud, but I am hanging in there. Nothing tastes right yet, but I did make a nice bread pudding, and some banana bread that everyone liked. I am making pies next week, pumpkin and pecan. Of course homemade crust! I'll send you all some! Hopefully I can stay caught up now. There is so much to read, I am glad to see all of the discussion about the new guidelines.
You all are the best!
Love & Hugs,
Susan

Nicole and salty...that stinks that you had melanomas too! Glad to hear Nicole's is 10 years out...what stage was it categorized? What stage was yours, salty? Mine just went to the dermis, but so minimal it was staged 2. Nicole we do sound pretty similar...my mel was at age 30.
Thanks seyla for your encouragement! I am feeling a bit better today, so hopefully that antibiotic will kick the infection's butt completely!
You guys are great!

Just wanted to say good morning as I haven't posted in awhile. Sheila, love your techie abilities; you too Deborye. I have a new (well, actually a USED ) mac and am not that familiar with it. My dtr' s school was sellling them and my Dell was in pretty rough shape so I bought one. Of course that invovled memorizing all the former teacher's log ins as they could not really configure the thing but the cost was pretty reasonable and it eliminated all that standing in line at Best Buy........So no cool graphics from me, just a big HELLO! Sue

Cannot believe they say self-exams are not helpful. That is how I found my cancer 13 years ago and just this past October. I found them when they were very small, <1 cm and they did not even show up on the mammogram...and they are saying not to bother with self-exam....that is just crazy!

What is it hurting for us to all do a SBE? If you find a suspicious lump, then you need followup, if not, no harm no foul. Do we really need the government telling us whether we can watchdog our own health? When do men need to begin having a prostate exam now? When they started exhibiting symptoms? Isn't it true that cancer usually doesn't display the symptoms until it has dug in and taken hold.?

Meece...Maybe nobody should have their Cholesterol check either. How about Pap test? Is that coming next.
Maybe they should take all womens right away.
Well they cant say examine your prostate so I guess that guideline will remain the same.
And last colonoscopy (sp) maybe that should be changed from 50 to 60.

Hi Cake,
I wanted to let you know my melanoma was a very early stage... in fact, I'm not sure what stage other than it was on my thigh... my lymh nodes were enlarged so I went to the dr. It was a very small mole, dark in color... they removed it for good measure, and they were SHOCKED it came back melanoma. I had to go have surgery and have the area removed, cleared the margins on the first go round and no other treatment was necessary. So, this means Stage 0- 1.
I wish I could say the same about the bc treatment, wow what us ladies need to go through to gt a clear bill of health!
Sheila,
I like your last post about the Pap and cholesterol test... what I find most AMAZING is this istruly a debate right now.. where is the candid camera?

Hello Sisters,
I am so annoyed by this new "guideline". I think it is total crap. It isn't even the mammogram guideline that is the worst of it, and that part is bad enough. I really worry that this gives women permission to take themselves for granted. I for one admit at 44 I had never had a mammogram. Until I found a lump I had just avoided it. I hadn't had a clinical breast exam for 3 years either. I was way too busy to do it, but at least I felt guilty and when I did find the lump, (at least I knew the girls fairly well) I went right in confessed my sins and got things moving. Even then it took from January to May to get a biopsy and get diagnosed, and in that time I know that the lump grew. For me, and I'm guessing there are a lot of women in the same mode, if I had thought I had until I was 50 to get checked out, I would have thought no big deal even with a small lump. It would have given me permission to take care of everyone but myself. The constant message to get checked at 40 pushed me into action. I don't know where I would be at 50 if I had waited, most likely gone. I just don't think women need anything to push them away from taking care of themselves. And aren't there lots of studies showing that bc is on the rise among women in their 40's? Seriously!
Okay, that just had to come out of me! I hope you are all having a great evening. Sweet dreams!
Hugs,
Susan

I went to Dana Farber yesterday, just for a post surgical check up due to small seroma which is slowly resolving. I had bilater mastectomies and the weird thing about all of this is that ONE suspicious area showed up on mammo and biospy proved it was cancer . Local docs thought there was a cyst in the other breast and ultrasound confirmed. WELL, the docs at Dana Farber (Boston, MA) were shocked that, after bx via MRI , the cyst was another small cancer, confirmed after MRI, which I had my local doc order. I really thought it was the standard of care.
So maybe we should push for further investigative non invasive tests like MRI. Really.
I feel that many insurance companies who are in the "business of caring" and really in the "business of making money" are going to be delighted about what they can deny to men and women who need mammos at the appropriate age. I never felt a lump nor did my docs. I have IDC. I feel we should push for mammos and then good testing.
OH, and no, the docs there were not happy campers with these new guidelines. I saw on the news last night that some very poorly spoken doc was trying to justify his thinking. Wish I could remember his name as he was a big DORK. Sue
