Happy Birthday ducky! Have a special day!
Joan: To answer your question, we stayed with friends in Mesquite Nv, then drove to Scottsdale where we stayed in a timeshare condo for a week. We took a side trip to Sedona which is the other small town you're probably speaking of...it's beautiful...in the red rock country. The Boulders is beautiful....we drove by it on the way to play golf in Cave Creek. It was a great 10 days! Always good to get back home...missed my grandbabies!

Hi Ladies.... just joining the group.... I started to read from the very beginning but there's just so many so I'm just trying to pick up. this sounds like a great group. I found a lump under my left breast on March 28, mammogram on April 10, biopsies on April 12, was told on April 16 I had breast cancer, met with a surgeon on the 17th who said it was Stage 1 and i would have to have a partial mastectomy - scheduled for April 30. Yesterday surgeon;s office called to say there was some more information they received from the MRI I had last Friday, and they want to discuss a full mastectomy tomorrow. This whole time I feel like I've been on a runaway train just hanging on for dear life, but tomorrow I put the breaks on. If he tells me I should have a full mx I will tell him I want to put the surgery on hold at least until I talk to a plastic surgeon and weigh my options and thoughts about reconstruction. I'm not completely informed on all of this, so I want to know exactly what I'm doing and what I NEED, not what I'm told to do.
My question is do you think waiting a week or so while I sorted out my options and decided what to do (about reconstruction if necessday) would be a bad thing?
Thanks ladies!
LI Mama

LlMama - IMO I don't think a week or so will matter! You need to be fully informed to make a decision you feel good about. Good luck!

LIMama:
Sorry you have need to join us here, but You are most welcome. You will find lots of information and support from the members..(I know I sure have).
I think you are wise to get another opinion so you can make a informed consent. Speaking for myself, I found the waiting around for the medical people to give me the next step to be done was the worst!
Good luck with which ever decision you make. We will be following your progress as you post...

LIMama, Welcome to the club no one wants to join. I don't think spending a week or two deciding what to do will matter. If you agree that mastectomy seems necessary, you'll want to meet with a plastic surgeon to discuss reconstruction. My MRI found an area close to the lumpectomy which was concerning. They couldn't be sure if it was cancer or something else. I had already elected mastectomy, so it didn't influence my decision. The pathology looked carefully at that spot and it was all normal. Do you know the characteristics from the biopsy, eg ductal/lobular and hormonal stats?

Welcome Long Island Mama from another Long Islander....
What a roller coaster ride you are on.
If I were in your place, I would push to get all the opinions you need to help you make your choice.
You are right to realize that it is good to lay out your options before surgery and treatments.
So sorry to hear you have to join us here...this is the most difficult time...but you will have lots of support and answers for many questions.
Please feel free to send a PM and let me know where you are being treated.
Hugs for you...

Happy Belated birthday Ducky! Sorry this working for a living puts me behind...
Welcome Long Island Mama!
I am sorry you have to join us but promise you will find comfort, knowledge and friendship here. I think you are doing the right thing to take a week or so to gather additional information so you can make an informed decision. These are really big decisions we have to make in such short timeframes.
Hugs to all my sistas.... Sweet dreams & happy Thursday!

Li Momma - So sorry to have to welcome you to the group but you couldn't have come to a better place, these ladies are great and can give you so much information. Be persistent both here and with your doctors, knowledge is your greatest weapon. I started this merry-go-round 2/17 when I got the news after a routine mammo and it is a crazy merry-go-round. I've been an RN for 26 years and you would think I would know something but when its in your own backyard you have just as many questions and realize just how much you don't know. Vickie is right about the worst part is waiting for the medical people to point you in the next direction. From the date to dx to the date of surgery was only 2 months but felt like 2 years with so many test, CTs, MRIs, scans, labs and exams that if a stranger came up to me today and asked to see my breast I'ld probably open my shirt without giving it a second thought.
Don't do anything until you have all the information you need and want from as many places and physicians you need to visit with. This is an excellent place to start as these ladies "know" the questions to ask which I felt so dumb I didn't even know what to ask first. Make sure your web sites are reputable which this one is and read, read and read some more. I have just started my journey of recovery having had a DMX with Diep flap reconstruction in San Antonio (I live in Taos, NM) on 4/17 but with the knowledge I gain from the questions I asked I feel very comfortable with the decisions I've made so far and with many more to make in the future.
Hang in there and ask all the questions you feel the need to ask. Although I'm a real newbie myself, I will help you in anyway that I can. Don't be afraid to ask for support from both family and friends including the ones here. Being afraid, angry, depressed or what ever holding hands with those who care is far better than being alone in the dark. I know because it is very difficult for me to reach out when in need.
