Jag- So sorry to hear its catching up with you.  I guess we are all individuals and it effects us so differently.  PLEASE take the time you need and DO stay in bed.  Anyone going through chemo should be allowed to be excused of any duties or chores, work etc.  I'm sure no one would blame you and too darn bad if they did.  Your body is saying Whoooaaaaaaaa slow down girl. Please listen.  It will only take longer to feel well again if you fight it.  Listen up now to your Older Sista. lol HUGS.

Thanks Cathy.  Didn't do anything yesterday and haven't gotten out of bed other than to pee today.  The bone pain in my legs and feet is horrific.  I also feel so blah, don't know how else to explain it.  I'm not sure how I'm going to get through this.  I wish I could sleep to pass the time.  Hoping tomorrow is better.....today is day 5 after chemo.  Please tell me it gets better.

Hi Jag, hope you feel better soon!

I am just wondering - has anyone noticed if the neulasta shot seems to be harder on younger women?

I'm asking the doc on Tuesday when i go in for my Herceptin treatment if I need the neulasta shot.  The pain is unbearable at this point.

jag-  I have heard from many of the ladies that there is sometimes a delayed response to chemo.  Maybe some of the others can chime in here.  I think it has something to do with the fact that the steroids in your system keep you feeling good for a few days after chemo, when they are gone, you crash big time.  I also know some ladies have terrible pain from the Neulasta and need pain meds (I'm talking Percocet, not Tylenol).  You go ahead and call your doctor's service today and tell them you need something for the pain.  You have to be able to rest and you can't do that in pain.  And yes, it will get better.  You will also find out all the tricks, meds and things that work well for you as you keep going.  Keeping you in my prayers.  Please call your doctor.

Jag I'm with DM on this: Call your doctors service and get him to call it an Rx for strong pain meds, like percoset or vicodin.

I called the doctor.  He can only prescribe something stronger if i go in and get it because it's a narcotic.  I don't have the energy to go to the er.  I have some percoset from the lumpectomy surgery, thinking about taking that before bed.  I made it downstairs to sit/lay on couch for an hour.  Came back up to bed and cried out loud - the pain is unbearable.  I have a huge threshold for pain...but not this.  Thank you for your prayers and thoughts.

Hi jag - it sounds like the Neulasta is causing you a lot of pain. The first shot for me was awful! As they went on, they weren't as bad, but still bad - I still needed the pain meds. I take Darvocet for the first few days after the shot. In fact, I took one a few hours ago. I had my Neulasta shot on Thursday and it started hurting by Friday night. This morning I woke up in such pain that I was dreaming about it (I was dreaming these were the side effects from AI's - LOL). But I took a Darvocet about 7:00 am and was able to sleep, and I took another one around 11:00 am and slept like a baby for a few more hours. You just HAVE to sleep to heal, so definitely take a pain pill. I hope it doesn't last much longer for you - usually I hurt for a little less than a week.

I talked my way into getting less of a dose the 2nd time, but I don't think that was such a great idea because then I got shingles, and I'm still having to deal with those. I think it left me subsequently weaker for another infection (bronchitis) after the 3rd chemo. I hope you feel better soon, it will eventually stop.

jag-  Did you ask your doctor if you can take the Percocet?  Dang these doctors piss me off!  You are in too much pain to go and pick up a prescription.  Surely there is something that is non-narcotic but strong enough to do the trick.  I think they gave me Tramadol after surgery.  I was truly pain-free in lala land and it was not a controlled RX.  I would call him back and say you need SOMETHING called in, or is it okay to take your Percocet.  The other thing to keep in mind with both pain and nausea meds. You need to take them at the onset, before things get really bad.  Otherwise it is very hard to knock the pain or nausea down.  Please don't wait till tonight, you need relief NOW. You probably aren't thinking too clearly because of the pain.  Can one of your friends call for you?

Oh, jag - I'm so sorry they didn't make sure you had enough pain pills to get through the weekend. I thought it was odd when my onco said - after the Neulasta shot - do you have enough pain pills? I thought, yeah, I have oodles of them you crazy pill-pushers (not really-haha), but I was wondering why. After that darned shot I found out why! I remember when I was trying to spread some Percocet out, I cut it in half and took it with a Tylenol. I'm sorry you're having to go through this - it's always on a weekend.

Jag- I agree with everyone else on taking your pain meds.  My DH was able to go pick up my meds from the pharmacy. (Darvon)  Why do you have to pick it up.  If you use the same pharmacy all the time you should be able to call them and have someone else pick up your meds, even narcotics.  Things will get better, but there is no need to suffer when there are meds that will help.  My prayers are with you.

I did talk to another oncologist this weekend and she told me that the change was probably a good thing, because she has a number of patients on similar treatment that have been doing fine for years and years before they ever needed additional more toxic chemo drugs.  I may have gotten a temporary free pass.  When I told her who my onco was, she said I had the best in the area and to just talk to him even if I have to make another appointment to see him.  She also said it was unlike him not to return calls and she gave me his email address and said she would talk with him on Monday morning.  Anyway she made me feel a whole lot better.

Hope everyone has a good night sleep tonight.

    Joy and blessings

Hi Jag, I get terrible bone pain from the Taxol, and I take Percocet for it.  That's what my docs always prescribe for me.  I can take 1 or 2 every 6 hours, and sometimes I need 2!  Hope it works well for you.  Keep in mind that it has Tylenol in it , so don't take any extra Tylenol with it, as that can be bad for your kidneys (or was it liver?).

    Hope you feel better!

amyjo-  So glad you got some reassurance.  From what you said about your Onc before, it does sound out of character that he would not return your call.  Maybe a receptionist screwed up or something.  anyway, I'm sure he would want to know about it.  Oooooh, now you have his e-mail!  that always does the trick for me.  My Onc (who lives on her Blackberry) answers my questions almost immediately via e-mail.

jag-  Like everyone says, I wouldn't hesitate to call your Onc again.  Doctors are "on call" for just this reason.  You are not calling for a silly cold.  You just had chemo and are in terrible pain.  AND, he did not give you a prescription, as he probably should have in case you needed it.   He shouldbe fine if you call now, during normal hours.  In the middle of the night, they are not too happy.  Boy I hope you have taken something strong and are off in LaLa land by now!

Hi- when the pain was that bad on thursday night.....i was so heavily constipated, i went a few times to the washroom, the pressure caused me to become light headed and then i vomited. i cried and cried. I was cold all night and every single bone killed me. like someone was stabbing me.On Friday morning, i called the nurse on teh emergency line and tld her, that i need something stronger, i cant handle it. I mean i even took percocet on the thurs night and it did NOTHING, so she sent a RX to the pharmacy for more steroids, (half dose) she explained some ppl need it only for 3 days post infusion, some longer. im deffo longer!

it has helped huge. however Saturday night at like 3am i got wicked pelvic pains, causing me to get out of bed as it hurt which ever side i slept on. I took percocet and it went. The pain came back at 8am once the percocet wore off then i got a hot water bottle, didnt help, took a hot bath, helped a little, but then took tylenol.

im a walking druggie, so it seems!!!! Jag, dont wait..............cuz if it so unbearable, its going to make u really really miserable-

  • Just catching up a bit.  Had my 2nd chemo Wednesday and feeling pretty crappy.

SO GLAD TO HEAR GRANNY'S NEWS - negative nodes!!!  YAY!!  {{{{{HUGS}}}}} to you!

And to you DesignerMom for finishing chemo - that's gotta be a good feeling even when you're still fighting SEs.  I'm only halfway done and really wish I didn't have to do this again.

Haven't been able to read all the details, but Jag why would your doc not let you take the Percocet you already have?

And I feel like a walking druggie too . . . . between chemo drugs, compazine for nausea, and everything else, ICK!

Got in contact with my onco this morning and he was in a car accident on Thurs. and they kept him in the hospital and took away his iPhone until Sat. evening.  He was not hurt seriously, just banged up quite a bit, but they ran what he calls every test in the book on him just to be sure he was okay.

He explained that as long as the Femera is reducing the cancer cells and the Aredia is doing it's job there is no benefit to giving me anything else that would further compromise my immune system.  And with my asthma which has gotten worse in the last few years he does not want to take any unnecessary chances with infections or other SE that are associated with the other chemo drugs. He said that what I was getting was the best protocol for my particular type of cancer at this point, which is what the other onco had said on Sat.

Jag - I hope you have gotten the pain meds you need and that the pain is easing up and you can get the needed rest for healing.  My prayers are with you.

I think we all feel like walking pharmacies.  Sometimes I think I take so many pills that I rattle when walk.  And I hate taking pills, but if that is what it takes to fight this BC then pills I will take.

    Joy and blessings to all,

    Amy Jo

Hi girls....I did call back the Onc on call last night and took a Percocet.  It did help some until about 2am.  Woke up moaning in pain.  Took another and fell in and out of sleep.  Still having some bone pain but nothing compared to yesterday and Saturday.  I called the triage nurse at my oncs office this morning and she said I should have never suffered like I did!  Ya Think?!?  I meet with my docs PA and have a herceptin treatment tomorrow.  The nurse is speaking to both the doc and the PA and they will discuss if I will be getting the Nuelsta shot again and if I do how to manage the pain.  I will not go through another weekend like I did.

I don't have much energy today.  I have the chemo and all the pain to thank for that.  I did manage to shower today!  Hoping to put in a couple of hours at work tomorrow before my appointment.

Thanks for all the love and support.

Jag--is the "T" in  TCH Taxotere?  I think Taxotere may cause bone pain/body aches like Taxol.  It sounds like its more from the chemo than the Neulasta, but I could be wrong.  Like I said before, I sometimes need 2 percocet, and then the pain is manageable.  Hopefully next time, if the pain gets bad again, you can take the Percocet right away, before it gets really bad. It's much easier to deal with if you take the pain meds right away.  Sleeping in the recliner seems to help too-laying down hurts my hips and legs mroe. Showering always feels good, doesn't it?  Hope you can rest and take it easy today!  Keep us posted on what your onc says~

    Take care,

    Tina

    Dear Barbara,

I am trying to make an informed decision regarding hormone therapy too. Can you let me know what you are doing? I really am leaning to taking my chances. I'm on the recurrance vs. not taking arimidex thread, also lots of pertinent info on the femara discussions. I have an onco appt. tomorrow and am terrified of being talked into something. (3d week of radiation right now). I hope to hear from you.Smile

by the way, Taxotere DOES cause body/bone aches. So its not just the Neulasta. I did research on this and found this out. I was in brutal brutal shape just like JAG on wed- Friday (chemo was on Monday/tues Neulasta shot) i went off my steroids on day 3  BAD MOVE...went back on them for a 4 more days, wayyyyyyyyy better.

Thanks for the info on the Taxotere.  I will definitely bring this all up tomorrow at my appointment.  The bone pain is almost all gone at this time.  Now I have this funky taste in my mouth.  It's not metallic.  I've tried lemon drops and that made it worse.  Any suggestions?  I'm ready to throw in the towel. I want to go to work tomorrow and I'm not sure I will be able to.

i have this funny taste in my mouth for the last 3-4 days. My tongue seemed whiter than normal, extremely dry. The lining around the mouth seemed more wrinkly. I jsut called my nurse to get me a prescription for NYSTATIN (oral thrush). So this should treat that.......

jag-  I'm glad you are feeling a little better.  Have to say, I think this is where "sick days" are totally justified.  I know you pride yourself on never missing work, but you have to let your body rest and recuperate while you are getting chemo.  Remember chemo kills cancer cells AND a whole lot of other good cells along the way.  If it was a friend, family member, employee, wouldn't you tell them to stay home and rest?  Give yourself that same advice.  Your first and most important job is to get healthy.

According to my dentist the reason why your taste buds change is because your mouth gets dry. He said that after chemo your taste buds will return.

Thrush is a different issue. It's like a yeast infection in your mouth. Yeah they have an ap, I mean a drug for that.

Jag I'm still betting that it was the Neulasta that gave you the bone pain issues. Some people do get them bad from what I have read.

    Valgal-I sent you a PM.

Lago-they have an app-I mean a drug for everything. Love it.

You are right DesignerMom.  I do need to take the time to heal.  I just have a tremendous amount of guilt when I miss work.  I'm really afraid of losing my job.  I hold the health insurance for myself and my family. I also pay all the bills. My husband lost his job a few years ago when the market crashed and has only been employed part time without any benefits.  Not a lot of banking jobs in Maine right now.  I know I can't get fired, I can also take a medical leave.  If I take a leave I don't get paid while on leave and I have to pay my insurance premiums while on leave ($1200.00/month).  My savings will only take me so far with 3 kids.  My employers are being wonderful so far - I'm just afraid they may change their minds when I take more time off.  I would give anything to take some time to recover and relax. If there are any programs that someone knows about plz let me know.

Has anyone tried Biotene mouthwash?  How did it work?

I also want to say thank you to all my wonderful sisters.  I could not be doing this without your support, love, knowledge.  I look to all of you for my strength.  I'm also grateful we have a place to vent when we need to!  Most of all it's comforting knowing we can all help each other out - the way it should be.
