Sue, my husband's family are the same. Mostly Australian and one branch from China. All very common names. British records are so much easier to search.
Jenn, My MIL's mother came to Aus from Scotland via NZ.
One branch of my mother's ancestors goes back to 1640. Another to 1763. I'm working on my father's side now which only goes to 1847 with few details and one branch missing.

Joy - my married name is not common, so we should be able to find out more but I can't find back further than Steve's great grandfather - no idea how they came here. One man did get in touch with him - he had researched part of his family but not his surname - someone who maried into the family.

Kate, I'll compile a list of central hotels with balconies for you.

I have my family tree on ancestry.com, pm me a name and I can check for free, the stuff non members have to pay for.

Finding the wife's maiden name is the biggest barrier, yet it's the women who are guaranteed to be the mother, and if the child was the result of an affair then no one would know. Although they do seem to know about illegitimate royal offspring. I think it would make more sense to be named after our mothers.

Thanks Linda, I might take you up on that if I get stuck. At the moment I'm getting information from the limited registration and the library.

Hi all
Mad keen genealogist here. We have great bursts of research and then spells when not much happens. I am of Scots, Irish and German descent. Know quite a lot about that side have more to check out, we have some 'interesting' family history. Dh's family from Ireland came through Aus, have found so much about them but have a brick wall in Ireland, it's just that there is a problem with names. We use Family tree maker as our recording programme. What I am trying to do is to write the stories about the families before they get lost. Both DH and i seem tobe theone with the oral history. What has amazed us is that in several cases we have proved the stories to be reasonably accurate.
Joy, I have a illegimate royal ancestor which is quite fun but we have all the details but can get no written proof as the person involved made sure there was nothing signed even though my gggrandfather was proved for very well and educated with the family. We do have a couple of photos of him with his father so that's reasonable evidence.
We have had a lot of luck with information. Tracing the Aus family has been quite easy and we have got lots of info from old news papers. Must get back to tracing some of the gaps. Problem is our family jigsaw keeps on growing.
Having lovely quiet time with my sister away for a couple of days. It also means that Dh will come and watch TV rather than doing work.
Must get to bed - I didn't realise what the time was.
Big hugs to all

Gosh - you all started talking again lol.
Kate - 8 December sounds fantastic - we'll have to chat to see if we can time flights into Brissy at roughly the same time. I know when I used to stay in Brisbane a lot for work the Hotel Grand Chancellor is nice and has balconies - but it's not right in the city - it's about a 10 minute walk into the city (downhill) and a 5 minute taxi ride back (uphill - and steep uphill! lol) - but if Racy can find us something in the city that would be great.
Kylie - Yay!! I'm so happy for you, finished at last (((happy hugs))))
Jenn, Kylie and Joy - either weekend in August suits me - Jenn is your daughter's birthday on the 25th? Mine is on the 24th - and I've decided that this year I'll be 21 again lol.
Sue - happy biking, I'm sure you'll get your fitness up again.
Alyson - my husband's family has their tree going back a long time. DH's father came out from England when he was a toddler, so finding all the rellies wasn't too hard for them. On my father's side our tree also goes back a fair way, but on my mother's side it pretty much stops with her. She was from the Ukraine and came to Australia after WWII. Finding anything about rellies over in that part of the world would have been pretty difficult for a long time as it was under "the iron curtin" for a long time. To make matters worse she had an "assumed" marriage to get on the ship to get here, so names are a bit iffy too. She's no longer around so we can't ask all the right questions.
Chrissy - great to hear from you - yes I hear you about not worrying about the missing foob. I know we are more aware of it than anyone else :-) When I got home yesterday my DH asked if I'd forgotten something that morning - I'd left the foob sitting on the bed, so he found it when he was making the bed lol.
New job is going great and I'm enjoying it. I did hear back about the other job - and I didn't make it to the second interview, so don't have to worry about that. I'm a firm believer in things happening for a reason. If I was meant to get the other job I would have gotten an interview.
I start the dreaded Aromasin on Friday. It's been so nice to feel like a human being again. So keep your fingers crossed for me ladies - hopefully I'll be one of those women who have very, very few se's on it.
Have a great day
Trish

Hi everyone - hope all is well in Aussie-land (and NZ-land)! Having fun watching the Olympics so I've been MIA.
Kylie - congratulations on finishing radio treatments. I can definitely relate to that feeling of "what now"? I had it too. Don't worry - your days will fill with wonderful things and you'll be so glad to be over all this cancer-related "therapy"! I actually felt like I was at a crossroads - that I'd beat this thing and now I was invincible! So I could do anything, but would should that "anything" be? Spent a lot of time asking questions like that. In a way, it was kind of a nice thought - having a new lease on life. So I wish you the best with those questions.
Joy - wishing a happy 3rd anniversary to you! Each one that goes by is a definite feeling of gratitude, isn't it?
Sue - your bicycle trip sounds amazing, I'm jealous!
AussieKate - OOOPPPSSS! Wishing you only GOOD luck!
Cheers ladies - sending lots of love to everyone today.

Trish - we get 5 days a year "special leave" - for things you can't do outside of work hours. I'm not seeing the onc until 4:15 but don't tell anyone. I am about to go and get my eyes tested though.

Morning all. Glad to see everyone chatting.
My first 'non-cancer' day in 10 months. I am going to school this morning for Hawaiian day so a sleep in was out of the question. Now I just have to lose the 14kgs I put on during treatment. I think the bus trips and the hot bread shop on the way home added the extra.
In the last two days of radio my blisters underneath started increasing. They sent me home with burn gauze and I have to apply it for two weeks. Overall I am really pleased how it went.
Joy, I am trying to do hubby's family history. I joined month to month on Ancestry, about $18 dollars and will cancel it after two months, maybe that could be an option. My hubby's dad admits to Aboriginal ancestry but it is hush, hush; the era that illegitimate children were never talked about. It is an issue for us because everyone assumes DH and DS have this heritage and it would be nice for clarification.
Sue, well done for your biking.
Hugs to everyone, Kylie x

Morning everyone. Well I've booked my flight to Brisbane, and with some FF points it came down to only $127 from Perth, not bad at all. I'll book my return flight a bit later, but I wanted to lock in a cheap fare over there and also tie in with a good deal for Trisha, so she and I are going to arrive roughly the same time on the Friday so that she gets to have a couple of nights away from hubby (one just wasn't enough ha ha).
So it's now confirmed from Trisha and me to meet up with Brissy gals on Saturday 8th December - CANNOT wait!!!!
I'm madly now getting ready for my week away next week with the Wescarpade road rally. I probably wont be able to post much to BCO (if anything) but feel free to follow our daily blog if you want on;
https://www.mycampquality.org.au/wescarpade/sslpage.aspx?pid=569.
It's raining over here big time. Oh well I need to start organising my packing and also Pauls for his first 3 weeks away at the mine. I have just loved having him home with me this past week. We have accomplished lots of jobs around the house and it's looking so much better.
Kylie, I've stacked on the weight too.... I think chemo is the main culprit as it seems most people put weight on. Good on ya Jenn for being on that treadmill so much. I hope you Southern girls have a great reunion in August.
Hope everyone is well and has a great day. xxxxx

Yay!! I'm booked too!! So - Brisbane here we come lol
Kate - have fun on your Wescarpade rally - will keep track of you via the blog.
Oh - and I've officially lost 11.5kg now, so there's hope for you all coming off chemo

Well I'm starting a serious diet when I get back from the Rally. It should be way easier not having Paul here and I can eat when I want and not just for the sake of it. So heres hoping that I'm a little more gorgeous by December!

Racy - tried out the tunnel coming home from Toombul - interesting, it's not very well lit - I couldn't see what speed I was doing - will put my lights on next time. The good news is that our usual rat run through Lutwyche and Wooloowin to get over there is still operable, so why would I use the tunnel?
It will be great to meet you Trish and Kate. Where could we go for a lunch? We have a ritzy suburb near us - Wilston Village - lots of restaurants. You will have to do some research for a place to go. I don't know of any places in the city, but South Bank might be a good spot.
My week of Lean Cuisine is going well, but not the Timtams for dessert

It will be great to meet all you guys too - but I guess we'll be in your hands as where to meet, kinda hoping you all know the good spots lol

If we all have the money, Id absolutely love to have a meal at the Casino while your here. Never eaten there but have heard good things about it. One of the other Brisbanites might have a better idea though.
Really looking forward to December now

Cafe 21 at the Casino is good - used to go there a lot when I worked in George St.

Well that date sounds good to me as well because it's my birthday on the 5th so I can ask DH for a trip to Brizzy for my gift...........don't know if it will work but I'm going to try ......lol. Sue, does your invitation still stand? If not no prob as I'll speak to my niece.
Well I had a rude awakening this morning........DH has gone to the city today and left really early and of course I was up all night watching the olypics so was well deep asleep when the phone rang at 10.00. It was DH in a mad panic! Someone had phoned him to say that the shop was open!! Yes I said open!!! He had forgotten to lock it last night so it was a quick up wash and get dressed and hightail it down to the shop! Without the back door key I could not lockup and walk away so I ducked over the road to the hardware shop and bought a new lock for the front door and installed it! Now I will make sure I have both front and back door keys just in case...........lol.
Have a great day all!
Love n hugs. Chrissy

Chrissy that would be great if you could join us!!!! I'm using my birthday in September as my excuse for the trip and I know Trisha is too. How can our DH's possibly say no to that, and also the airfares for that time of the year, before all the christmas hoo haa seem pretty cheap at the moment.
Casino sounds good! and you never know, maybe afterwards we might win our dinner money back.... not that I am much of a gambler, but when in Rome.....
On another subject. I have been estranged from my father for the past 5 years and he just rang me. I am still a bit shaky from talking with him, but it was an easy conversation I guess. He didn't know about my BC so it was nice to be able to share that with him without there being any dramas associated with it. It's all in the past tense for me pretty much now.
Love to all xxx

Chrissy - of course the offer stands - we have 2 spare bedrooms.
Just got back from the onc - the bloody radiology place hadn't sent the dexa results through. They told him I'd picked them up. They told me they'd sent them to him when I tried to pick them up - can't win. He got them to read the results out and there is no change, so whoopee for Zometa and Vit D3.

Oh Chrissy, it would be so wonderful if you could come up too. I'm keeping everything crossed that your DH can come up with the goods!!! My DH is paying for my airfare for my birthday in August, so yours should too lol.
Sorry about your panic today though - that's the sort of mad dash that stops your heart.
Kate good that your conversation with your Dad went well.
Kylie, Jenn and Joy what date in August are we going to pick for Berrima?
Trish

What about the 18th? Where shall we meet? Needs to be comfy for a loooong lunch :-)

Hi everyone
Kylie I'm so pleased you are finished your treatments. Nearly a year that's a long time
Jenn. Like Joy I get 60 tamox on one script. I can't remember how much it is but fairly standard price. I haven't had hot flushes. I have had tightness in leg muscles (like a cramp)and feel awfully stiff but maybe that is not T related. If it is not TMI it causes me to have vaginal discharge, but some women get the opposite (Dry). I also had bad insomnia which I've never experienced before but maybe that is just age related. It's so hard to know what are SEs. Generally I feel that I tolerate it well and am thankful that it is available. I found the newbies Tamoxifen thread and some other T threads on BCO useful.
I won't mention everyone by name as I am sure to forget someone
I'm doing Family History too with University 3A. Using PAf. Thinking I might join Ancestry. Interesting to know you can pay a monthly fee. Thanks for that info Kate

Wow, it will be very exciting to meet you ladies in Brisbane - that will be Sue, Lyndal, Kate, Trish, Chrissy and me!
Speaking of birthdays, happy horses' birthday today everyone!0 -
Would love to come as well but don't think it would be possible as DH and I plan to explore SA in November. Will think about because I have a brother in Queensland.
Struggling with things at the moment. Since having the flu my RA and fibro have been dreadful - it has been a struggle to move. Mostly I try to ignore it and just keep doing everything but not this week. Finally saw the GP yesterday and agreed to try another drug. So lets see if this helps. There is a very good new one but I have to try the one I have before I can get funding for the new one. I always worry because I tend to have strange reactions to drugs.
Any way I did get some things planted in my front garden yesterday. When DH asked why I just said I had too because I was being bloody minded. He laughed and understood. He is really the only person I tell how bad things are.
It is another damp day today and I have a few things that have to be done.
Hope you all have a good day.

Morning everyone
Lovely minus 6 here this morning, but clear skies and heavy frost which means it'll be a lovely sunny day.
Alyson - sorry you aren't feeling crash hot, I hope you start to feel better soon.
Hope everyone has a great day today.
Trish
