Jan my surgeon kept me in 7 days but the drain were taken out early as it was Christmas so I had to go in every two days for manual drainage. It took three weeks for the fluid to be at an acceptable level. Internal stitching no dressing for mastectomy and open air two stitches per drain. Had no dressings at all and was allowed to shower from first day. No infection.

Was in 3 days but had District nurse everyday, sometimes twice until drains out which was almost 2 weeks. After that saw the nurse a couple of times a weeks as I had a bit of infection which needed abntibs. I showered that very first day. Nurse would let me know when she was coming and I would shower then she would redress the wound and it gave it some time in the air. Dissolving stitches plus a couple iof ordinary ones in mastectomy scar which was dressed every day as well as those in by the drains.
Must get back to the tennis and see if Sam can win.
PS Maybe I shouldn't have gone to watch. Now who am I going to cheer for.

Well I had a immediate recon when I had my mastectomies.....so can't compare!!
But it is funny how everything is so different.
I had your breast surgeon to put my port in Jan (not for the mastectomies though) & every time I go to chemo, the nurses comment on what a neat job he has done & how well it bleeds! So he must be good at what he does.....
Just back from the psychologist......was 15 minutes late coz I got lost, good start, felt like a proper twit!! So my meeting was cut back by 15 minutes but I do think it will be beneficial & she certainly opened up a few questions for me. I'm going back in 2 weeks - chemo crash next week - so hopefully as time goes on I'll be in a better place & have some helpful coping mechanisms...👍
Well it seems it's been a bit quiet on here the last 24 hours, so hopefully that means everyone is doing fine 😎
Luv to all......Karen x0 -
Karen I think everyone is watching tennis.........lol.
Good to hear that your visit to the psychologist went well (even though you were a bit late) and you think it will do you good with a few more coping skills by the end.
Good luck with your next chemo.....hope you don't crash too hard.
Love n hugs. Chrissy

As far as I know, underarm odour is caused by bacteria in that area which is moist and gets very little air.
The one thing I know which will stop the bacteria is Isocol or alcohol. Wipe with a cotton ball soaked in the alcohol
then blow dry and no odour. Isocol is availabe at supermarkets and chemists for about $3 a bottle.

Lia from Brisbane ("Living Organic in the 21st Century" on Facebook) has hit the painful hair stage and is a bit down today. Will be shaving off the hair tomorrow.
If you find her on Facebook it might be a good time to rally round...

Amazing the differences between everyones treatments. It seems even drs in the same hospital or practice have different protocol. I didn't have a mx but my surgeon wanted me to stay in with drains and I said no as the public hospital is frantic; so the nurse came out each day for drains. Talking to some of his other patients who went private, had lovely rooms, good food and wine (yep) - they were happy to take advantage of staying in for 7 days.
I went to a breast support meeting last night. One of the ladies daughter is a genetic counsellor. She generously gave her time to give a fantastic presentation on genetics and cancer with handouts. Even though I have had genetic counselling it was fantastic. One thing it did make me realise was how informed we are by this site, and that not everyone with BC has an understanding of what is going on with their treatment.

Sheila - thanks for that info. The isocol is a really good idea. I think my problem is the fixamull bandage has become impregnated in the time when I couldn't shower (like an old sock) and even now, washing with soap and water doesn't make it smell clean. I really hope my BS takes it off tomorrow.
Liv - sadly, taking out the lymph nodes doesn't make any difference to the sweat glands under the arms. It would be an unexpected bonus if it did.
Trish - sympathies for the heat. We're lucky over here in the west at the moment - nice and cool. I had my first walk down by the river this morning, it was gorgeous - warm with a cool breeze, sunshine, sparkly water - just breathing was a pleasure. I hope your aircon gets fixed asap.

Has anybody used the bcna "Strengthen your Recovery" program? http://www.bcna.org.au/new-diagnosis/treatment/surgery/staying-mobile-after-surgery
It's apparently a pilates program designed for use during the 10 weeks following surgery. I've only just seen it, and have rung for more info, but of course they're in Sydney and closed for the day. Keen to get hold of it.

Jan I didn't know it existed. Good luck with it!

Hi Mopsy! Welcome! The thread is a bit quiet at the moment as we all seem to be busy or watching the tennis......lol. How are things going for you?
Midnight if your body is requiring that amount of sleep its very busy trying to heal.
The pine forests near Jamestown are burning but its a long way from me. The only thing we are getting is some smell of smoke since the wind change. I'm hoping my SILs sister is okay as she lives right at the edge of the forest........but I'm not sure if she is in the part that is threatened. Keeping my fingers crossed that she is okay.
Went and picked up my car yesterday after the repairs were complete and it looks like a new one again......lol......although its eight years old........lol. They were even able to repair the mag where it was damaged......amazing! It was so nice to get back into my car again after having the loaner for three days. They gave me a very well maintained Nissan ? .........memory where are you when I need you?.........anyway, it was very nice to drive and the air con worked really well the down part was getting out of it!........it felt so low to the ground that I almost needed a crane to pull me up!! Getting in and out of my Subaru is a breeze........thank goodness!
Have a great day all!
Love n hugs. Chrissy0 -
Hi Mopsy - welcome!
Very hot here today - 39 degrees which is the forecast top for today, so think we'll go over that. The Cooma fire has flared up again, but no threat to us. There is a small fire burning to the west of us still, which is a bit worrying, but keeping an eye on it. The winds have also picked up today, which is not good.
Today is the 10th anniversary of the Canberra fires, so everyone is on edge with this bad weather - almost exactly the same sort of day as 10 years ago.
Stay cool everyone
Trish

Congratualtions Trish on yr anniversay, sweet as, hope you are enjoying the day knowing you have had a whole year without that herceptin.
Had to have a good laugh, i gotta watch what i say here in my house, we have a parrot who does come out with stuff at times and about half an hour ago there was a comotion in street, parents calling their kids and that sets our dog off, any activity, so i went and quietened Holly down and i came back inside and i heard that darn Parrot say, WHAT THE HELLS GOING ON NOW, it was a crack up as it seem to tie in with what was going on with the dog barking. he is indian ring neck and he comes out with hard case things. one is AW come on, get on with it. he says shut up Holly, our dog. hello Grubby, thats his mate name. and a few things i cant make out, not clear enough, but that was today. lol that is my saying when things are happening and the dogs are barking their heads off. oh dear, oh well.

Lol Midnight, I love hearing the parrots talk...........they do come out with some funny things sometimes and it's almost like they are thinking of the most appropriate words for the situation. Love it!

hello ladies, sorry that I have been a bit quiet recently. Murphy's Law.... I woke up last Saturday morning at 2am with excruciating right calf muscle. I thought that I had cramp, but the muscle was not tight. It would not go away and it kept me awake for a good 2 hours. Now, I know that my pain tolerance is very good, but I almost woke my husband up and held back tears. I thought the better of it as he had a bad cold and was not well himself. I eventually fell asleep and upon waking, the pain was still there and I had trouble standing on that damn leg. I took a couple of Panadol Osteo and an hour later when the pain had not subsided, I phoned the oncology ward in my hospital, where I was told to go to my GP or come in to ER for stronger pain killer. I honestly thought that it was another side effect from the Xeloda and saw my GP 50 km away. She ordered an ultrasound of my right leg and gave me strong painkillers. I slept well that night and on Monday morning booked an appointment for an ultrasound at 3.45pm. Upon completion of the ultrasound, I was told to see my GP straight away as I had a DVT all along the right leg, from the groin to the ankle. I saw the GP next door to ultrasound, but because I was short of breath, I was told to go to ER. I was seen at 11.30pm and chest x-ray and other tests done. Pleural Effusion still there, but no pulmonary embolism. I was given a clexane injection in the tummy and I left at 1.30am and had to return following morning for follow up. Following morning I was given 2 clexane injections and I have to do that daily. Needless to say, I have been a bit tired and run down, but getting back to normal again.
I hope everyone is staying cool and safe.
Mopsy, welcome to this wonderful group. xox
Chrissy, I hope that the fire is controlled soo and I am glad to hear that you have your car back.
Trish, congratulations on your 1 yr anniversary off herceptin, and, yes, I remember the Canberra fires in 2003 as my son was living there and riding his bike home from work. He had only arrived there a couple of weeks earlier and was a bit startled. We did visit him a few weeks later and were shocked at the devastation and the loos of all those houses!
Liv, I hope your are well. I get jealous when you can go out for your power walks, as the blisters on my feet are holding me back. I have discovered, that if I wear thick cotton socks, that my feet don't get wors, so goodbye sandals for the time being. I think I got DVT from taking it easy, so will endeavour to increase my walks again in my week off.
Midnight, I agree with Liv, and dont worry about the dishes. Listen to your body xox.
Cheers
Mandy
