I am in Maryborough which did have some flooding last year and might be in for some more.
We went to the Sunshine Coast on Monday and got caught in the heaviest downpour I have ever seen. A lot of cars pulled over under under-passes and there wasn't much room for extras. One thing I have found to be very useful at times like that is using 'RAIN-EX' on the windscreen and rear window. After watching a newsclip taken through the windscreen of a moving car and seeing how blind vision becomes when it rains so hard, I realise why all those drivers HAD to pull over. Even though we had the washers going fast we could still see between 'swishes' as the water was forced up the screen and over the top and the drops seem to shatter and evaporate instead of creating a water-fall effect in front of your eyes.
For your own safetys sake, I recommend this product to everyone, it should be made compulsory for all cars.
One bottle is about $10 and will last for ages. After washing your car, apply it to your windows as if you are polishing them and then forget about it til the next time it rains, believe me you'll notice the difference.
Sheila.

Oh, forgot to say:
1. Cut my finger with a pair of scissors this morning. I cleaned it really well and have put a sealed bandaid on it but I paranoid it'll get infected. How pathetic to have to worry about a little cut!
2. Booked into a Look Good session at my centre on 21 Feb. That will be two days before my third and final FEC. I think it's probably a bit late by then, but I'm looking forward to the free make-up :-)
Jenn0 -
I'm doing the LGFG session on the 20th Jenn. I hope I come out looking like a super-model - actually body is way past that.... but I do hope to come out looking and feeling great.
Sounds like you are doing everything right with your cut. Yes we have to be so careful now.
xx

Hi Sheila, good to see you here! I've heard of that Rainex but never used it but here in SA we don't get those sorts of downpours either....lol......it still might be good for ordinary rain though. I've added you to our FB group.
Kate, you may find that the fatigue gets a bit worse as you have more chemo but it sounds like you are not going to suffer too badly with the rest of the SE's. Go get your wig organised as the hair will definitely start to fall soon.
Jenn your finger should be okay as you have done the right thing with it, better sure than sorry. The Look Good, Feel Good session should come just at the time you will need it. Have fun!!!

I had a good experience today at my first Cancer Support Group meeting for the year. I didn't know before I got there if I would tell them about all my troubles since last October, because I thought I might break down, so I gave them a short summary of the highlights.
At the end of the meeting when we broke up for a cup of tea, one lady walked up to me and said, "I have got something for you." As she finished speaking, she raised her arms and gave me the sweetest hug I have ever needed. That hug filled a hollow inside me that has ached for much longer than when all this trauma started. It was like a grandmothers hug, it brought tears to my eyes. That lady is now on my list of personal Angels.
Sheila.

Shiela I am so glad that an Angel has been able to do what I have wanted to do for you for a very long time.......give you a very big, gentle hug. They sure do heal the soul when it is in dire need. Your group sounds fabulous!

lol Kate, your very special. Its the blasted FEC that doesnt discriminate.
Jen, sorry you didnt feel as good today and hope your better tomorrow.
For what its worth I've always had very long hair all my life, but since chemo ive kept it short and everyone tells me Ive dropped 1O years. Its so much cooler, no headaches or ponytail pull and so much quicker in the mornings. Also means I can muck around with colours and its only ever two cuts till its grown out which means my hair is in the best condition of its life.
Happy Australia Day for tomorrow ladies. Since BC I personally am more greatful than ever that Im an Australian. Bless our country for having such a wonderful medical system in place for us all.

Im going to get some of that RainEx now that youve told us about it. I wasnt game to go out yesterday because it was pouring so hard. Thanks for the tip.

Happy Australia Day right back at you Lydal and to everyone else!
You sure are right, it's good to be an Aussie! I too always had long hair which disappeared when I was dx'd. It grew back an then whe I was dx stage IV with mets to my arm and a pin had to be put in it, I was in so much pain that I could not manage the long hair as I couldn't lift my arm up to wash or brush it so it had to go again and it's been waaaay short ever since. So short in fact that it hasn't seen a brush or comb (unles it's being cut) for three years. Fingers do the job nicely.....lol
Jenn, maybe you were feeling so good you actually did a bit more than you should have........you need to take it a bit easy throughout the whole treatment even when you are feeling good as your system is under a huge amount of stress.
Love n hugs all. Chrissy

Is anyone doing anything special to mark Australia Day?
Last year that was the day that my hair started falling out. I was at the races LOL.
I was planning to go to the events at Southbank this year but they have mostly been cancelled due to the wet weather. I was particularly interested to see the Super Hornet planes but I don't think they will be there now. I always look out for the military aircraft when they do flyovers. You would probably catch them Lyndal.
Anyway, I am going to see War Horse at last, and to the gym of course.
Yes, we are lucky to live here and even you ladies from NZ are equally lucky LOL.
Have a great day and be thankful everyone, as I know all Aussies will.0 -
Racy, my DD2 and her fiance arrived tonight and will be staying until Saturday. In the morning there is a community breakfast in the park next to the creek supplied by the Town Council and free..........yipee!! Good ole Aussie bacon and eggs and cup of tea or coffee. After breakfast the Citizen of the year will be announced.......then home to relax and chat and just generally spend time with family.
Hope your day will be as pleasant as mine.
Love n hugs. Chrissy

Hello all - Happy Australia Day! :-)
Kate - hate to tell you I have to back everyone else up and tell you that your hair WILL fall out. Sorry lovey, but that's a fact. I also found that not all cycles were the same, they varied slightly. My days 4 and 5 were usually the worst, but it mixed it up a bit, with a day here and there added in as an off day. The fatigue will get worse - it's cumulative.
I'm actually not sure when my eyelashes and eyebrows fell out. I seem to remember that when I started the Taxotere every single hair on my body fell out, and I actually started to grow a little bit of stubble on my head.
Jenn - you've done the right thing with your finger - just make sure you keep it clean. Sorry you are having an off day, but as Chrissy says - you have been feeling ok, and maybe overdid it a bit.
Sheila - good to see you here, and glad you found an Angel :-)Last year on Australia day I wasn't too good. I'd had my first Taxotere 2 days previously and my first Herceptin the day before. I'd been on a steroid high, and in the morning food started tasting pretty awful, and by the afternoon I was a crying mess. Steroid crash. I didn't realise what it was, and my poor DH couldn't do a thing right. He only had to smile at me and I was off in a flood of tears. He eventually sat me down on the lounge and just cuddled me for about an hour while I howled. lol
This year I feel great, and planning on cooking beetroot chutney and poaching the remaining necterines in Madera :-)
Have a great day everyone, and I hope you Queenslanders can stay dry.

Happy Australia day everyone.
I am shedding like a dog this morning... yep it's going to happen. A few tears have been shed. I am not prepared even though I know it's inevitable.
But I am so grateful to live here in Australia. A country where we have one of th best health care systems availalbe to all Australians.
I'm also grateful for our Aussie spirt that gets us through adversity and our sense of mateship and humour.
Have a wonderful happy day today ladies, with all your families.
Love Kate xxxx

Hi Judith. How are you?? Thanks for the happy thoughts. Yes it's going to be a great day today. Very hot over my way and so much rain on the other side of the country. I just hope they don't have flooding like they had last year.
Thanks again for popping in. Really nice of you and the mods.
Love Kate

Happy Australia Day!
We are off to friends for a BBQ - they live right on Pittwater (they have their own jetty and boat!) here in Sydney so it will be lovely.
Second day without hair and already having a bad hair day is not a good sign :-( The short wig doesn't feel "right" for today, but the long one didn't either. Settled on the short one in the end.
Jenn0 -
We are having family over for a bbq tonight and to watch the fireworks from our front verandah.
Last year the most amazing comet flew past and we all saw it. It was if mother nature was showing us that she could put on a far more superior show.

We've been watching the tennis - what else would you do on Australia Day? lol
Thanks Mods and Judith - that's lovely of you to wish us a great day :-)
It's not too hot here today - and we've just had a brief shower of rain, which has freshened things up well.
Hope you all enjoy your various activities girls!

Happy Australia Day girls and Judith (thankyou for your post)
We're not doing anything special - been out in the garden as the rain has stopped for the day. But it's too hot and humid to be out there, so I give up. Found out Bunnings is open - might go and get some new secateurs. DH has decided to clean up around the outside of the shed, so I've had to stop him killing my shrubs.
Jenn - chuck the wigs and get some Buffs. I really don't know how anyone could wear a wig - too hot for this country.
Kate - sorry to hear you have started shedding - time for that buzz cut - it will be easier on you.
I must take a pic of my hair in the morning when I get up and post it - then you'll see it will grow back with a vengeance.
Enjoy your celebrations girls - I don't celebrate as I'm still a Kiwi in my heart.

Can someone explain to me what the neutisa shot is? I am reading about it. I didn't get it. All I got was 3 Emend to take home with me. They did say something about hubby haveing to give me a shot the next day. Would I need it if I don't have bad side effects?. I think I have done very well so probably I don't need it but it seems everyone is getting it and have I been overlooked? I think I am starting to get a bit paranoid here... I mean I don't want anything I don't need but I want this chemo to work like it should otherwise what's the point to it all?
0 -
Hi everyone!
Business first: Kate, you are referring to the Neulasta shot. It's an injection to boost white cells and counter infections and is given the day after chemo. However, not everyone gets it. I got it as it was usual with the chemo that I had (a harder chemo I hear, TAC). Also, people at greater risk of infection get it. It can be given at the hospital or self administered at home. I got my doctor to do it for me as the surgery is right next door to my home.
Mods, thanks for the well wishes.
Sue, your national day is coming up; 3 Feb isn't it?
All, I just saw the film 'War Horse'. Wow, it was excellent!0 -
The Neulasta works to keep/maintain your white cell count between txs. My Onc has a policy of NOT giving it unless someone's count doesn't rise again before the next tx. That drug has its own side-effects that aren't good so she avoids it if possible. Sounds like your Onc is the same...
Jenn0 -
I never had Neulasta - my onc doesn't give it and I never needed it. I do know it costs a small fortune.
Racy - I don't know when the NZ national day is - I think I'm an orphan - I've lived here too long (49 years) but maintain my NZ citizenship. Maybe one day if I ever get my wish and move back there, then I'll learn all about the national holidays.
Went and bought new secateurs, new gardening gloves, a new broom and a new dish rack - that was expensive but fun.
He's out there again trying to clean up the mess he made. The green bin is already full, now the black bin is full too - where will I put my garbage until Tuesday?????? Pity the golf courses are too wet to play

Thanks for clearing that up for me so well Racy and Susie and Jenn. I certainly don't want it if I don't need it.
I am doing really well (touch wood) but I am buzzing my hair tonight as I find it psychologically quite daunting to be running my hand through my hair every five minutes and counting them. I had a really big shed this morning (100's), but not much since, but it's all going. I will post some pics. I don't even have a wig or a hat, I do have some scarves if I get desperate.

((((((((((((((Kate))))))))))))))) - it is really hard, I know. I feel sad for you0
-
Lol @ Sue ... You've had a busy day, and sounds like you'll have a busier one later in the weekend cleaning up after your DH
Kate - I never had the Neulasta shot either. I think it's fairly common here in Oz to not get it unless you really need it. So don't worry about it. You sound like your hair is coming out ahead of schedule. I think I told you that I buzzed my head with the dog clippers a day or so before I knew it was going to fall out. The one thing I had control over in all the craziness that is bc, so did it myself. Of course DH had to tidy the back up for me. Then when it really started coming out in earnest and my head looked like a moth eaten fur coat he shaved it for me.
Back to the tennis :-)

Did you know we have over 100,000 hairs on our heads?
Sue, (from memory) it's Waitangi day which celebrates the signing of the treaty between the Maoris and British. When I visited New Zealand, I went to the area where the treaty was signed, in the Bay of Islands. It was a beautiful area.
Jenn would know all about it I assume.
Gym time!0 -
Definitely Waitangi Day soon :-)
Had a lovely afternoon at our friend's house on the water and stopped at another friend's place for coffee on the way home. Hoping I will sleep well tonight!
Kate, be prepared for a LOT of hair everywhere. We did it in the bathroom so I was able to just get straight in the shower when we were done. It took nearly 2 hours to get through the 4 steps: cutting the hair down with scissors; buzzing down as far as the shears would go; beard trimmer on Tony's electric razor; and then finally his razor. My hair has not hurt since, but is still a bit itchy and it even grew noticably overnight!
Jenn0 -
Racy - We left when I was 10, so I don't remember much, I just know I love it there - certainly cooler than here and no snakes.
I'm looking forward to my day off tomorrow - going shoe shopping. I was smart to apply to have it off
